Description from the manager

Big Kahuna is a six bedroom, four bathroom home located in the East Beach portion of beautiful Oak Island, NC. The property features two kings, three queens, and one set of bunk beds. East Beach, which runs just over three miles from Southeast 58th Street west to Middleton Avenue is a popular stretch of Oak Island sand. Not quite as quiet or secluded as West Beach, its location closer to the island's shops and restaurants make it perfect for the vacationer looking for a blend of relaxation and convenience. Mold. A lot of space. And mold.

Left on 09/19/2012 for a stay in September 2012

The home itself is quite large, and has a very open kitchen and living room space, which was well enjoyed by our group. The rooms were fair sized, and no one complained of feeling cramped. The house is well worn, however. The door locks and knobs all seemed to be quirky, the floor of the house is very sunken in places, and kitchen appliances were frequently broken or inadequate.

The house had a few major issues. The biggest of these being the mold, most centrally located in the kitchen/living area aC registers. It was obvious and dirty, and it came as no surprise that each of the ten guests who stayed there through the course of the week complained of sinus and throat illness. A much older review of the property stated this was an issue here, but I had assumed that the problem would certainly be resolved by the time of our stay. I was mistaken. This alone is certainly a solid reason to avoid this property, and made me greatly regret booking it.

Secondly, the photos form the Oak Island accommodations website depicts a clean backyard, stepping through a break in the dunes immediately on to the beach. As soon as I arrived to check-in, the hostess had me sign a contract stating that I was aware the dune was not to be accessed, and I agreed to pay a $500 fee if the home owner was fined. Having no warning of this prior, you're forced to either sign it and move on, or give up on your vacation. It was done in poor form, and I should have been notified prior to booking. The walk to the nearby access was short, but none the less, you are getting what's advertised.

Also, the house lacks quite a few amenities one might expect from a house that sleeps 12. The refrigerator is far too small to be of use, and there are only two chairs on the back deck. The website photos show 6.

Some positives? The wireless internet works great, the beds and sofas were comfortable, and there's ample parking for quite a few folks to stay, and extra.

I certainly regret having booked this property.

Don't let the pix fool you. Lots of mold on a/c registers and bed comforters were dirty and stained. No chairs on deck and did I mention lots of mold?
