Description from the owner
Accommodations: House, 3 Bedrooms, 3 Baths (Sleeps 6-7)
San Felipe is a suburb of Oaxaca just 10 min. from the centre of town. It is a small Zapotec village situated in the beautiful foothills of Oaxaca. Many say it is rapidly becoming the Beverley Hills of Oaxaca as much of the land has been bought by wealthy locals and foreigners alike. This mixture of wealthy landowners and the local farming community is exactly what gives the town its unique flavour and the two live together in relative harmony. It is not unusual to see a BMW passing some donkeys carrying wood to be used for cooking and the herder just a couple of steps behind.

I had planned a special vacation for my wife and I. I had no idea that the luck of my choice to stay with Chris and Helene would be so beautiful. Even though the location isn't right in the core of the town, the experience in the home certainly made up for it. The food was fantastic, but it was the daily interactions with the hosts that made this stay exquisite.

This review is very late in coming but Chris and Helene were such amazing hosts that we haven't forgotten them and I wanted to make sure we did a review. My husband and I stayed at La Encantadora on our honeymoon in Dec/Jan 2011/12. Booking was very easy and Chris was very patient with me when I made several changes to our booking. The house is beautiful and the beds were the best we found throughout Mexico but the real highlight was Helene's cooking which was absolutely delicious and seemed like she knew exactly what my favourite meals were! Chris and Helene were also amazingly helpful and friendly, picking us up at the bus stop, helping us negotiate the hazardous Mexican mail system and providing great restaurant and sight seeing suggestions and assistance. Thanks again to Chris and Helene for a wonderful stay and many apologies for the very very late writing of this review.

Last month our family stayed at Villa Encantadora in Oaxaca for a week. What a terrific experience. I can't say enough about Helen and Chris, our hosts, who were extremely helpful from the time I first contacted them by e-mail to waving goodbye as we stepped into the taxi to head home. World travelers and extremely knowledgable about Oaxaca, they have opened their beautiful home to discerning guests and tourists who have come to experience the charm of Oaxaca.
The postives of staying with Chris and Helen are many. The three bedrooms are charmingly appointed each with it's own private bathroom. There is also a TV room for guests to use as well as a roof deck that is a great place to watch the sunset. There are several outdoor areas to retreat to read a book or catch up on e-mail. They provide pick-up service at the small regional airport for a minimal fee and Helen makes the most scrumptous breakfasts each morning. They are eager to share their recommendations with you and they have a terrific website that provides links to museums, cultural events, etc.
Villa Encantadora is ideally suited for visitors who want to get away from the traffic and noise after being in the city all day and are looking for tranquility and a chance to interact with residents of Oaxaca. They are located about 10-15 minutes north of Centro about a 50-60 peso ride each way. Unfortunately several restaurants in their neighborhood have recently closed so they are trying to find other places for their guests to go to that would be convenient and have a good reputation. -

We had the pleasure of visiting La Encantadora in March/2011. We were greeted at the airport in Oaxaca by Helene our most gracious host. Helene welcomed us into her home and we felt we were staying with friends. The B& B is located in San Felipe. Just a short taxi ride from Oaxaca City. We enjoyed wonderful breakfasts during our stay and even went out with Helene one evening to a fantastic restaurant in Oaxaca City. The hospitality is the best we have encountered. We felt completely relaxed and at home in this beautiful home. The garden is lovely and the furnishings elegant. Helene and Chris are very well informed when it comes to local sightseeing. Since our stay was only for two full days we spent one afternoon at Santo Domingo and another few hours at the ruins at Monte alban. We thank you both very much for sharing your lovely home with us and look forward to a return visit.

Chris and Helene welcomed us and said the house was ours. They could not have been nicer and more accommodating. They are located in a very nice gated neighborhood 10 minutes from the center of town by taxi. Nicely furnished living room, TV room, and roof terrace for cocktails at sunset. Gardens surround the house with pretty sitting areas. Taxis to the center of town are very reasonable and always reliable. Chris & Helene have many great suggestions on places to eat and made our reservations. Oaxaca has wonderful restaurants. Go on a tour or get a car & driver to see the artisans within 15 miles or so, and Monte alban's ruins are a must. Helen fixes huge breakfasts that started our days off well. Great place to stay while visiting Oaxaca. If we get back to Oaxaca this is where we would stay.

Zürich, SwitzerlandQuaint quiet retreat in busy Oaxaca
Left on 01/12/2011 for a stay in November 2010
Not only was the pick-up at the airport organized, but a welcome breakfast was just waiting for us. And that meant Mexican fruits and Swiss muesli, looking into a beautifully kept garden.
Chris and Helene are lovely hosts that will go out their way to accommodate you. They'll happily share their knowledge not only about the town Oaxaca but they will tell you stories of the ancient cultures, so you'll appreciate the historic sites even more. And if you choose to, you have nice evening talks about everything (as we say in German "about God and the world"). Don't forget to ask for tips for restaurants downtown.
If you feel like getting a rest late afternoon, the house has a great terrace to enjoy the last sunrays while slurping a drink and reading a travel book. The distance to town is close and the taxi cost is moderate so you can easily make the trip twice a day into town. If you come by car, there is a parking space. The rooms are carefully setup and decorated and have an individual bathroom. Beds will guarantee a good night's sleep.
La Encantadora is the perfect round-up of the beautiful place Oaxaca. -

Our recent stay at "La Encantadora" was most enjoyable. Chris and Helen, the gracious hosts, welcomed us into their beautiful home. The place is spotless. The generous breakfast served in the elegant dining room was delicious. Helen's flair for decorating is evident throughout the house and the garden. Our favourite sitting area was the rooftop terrace with its breathtaking view. A most recommendable B&B; indeed!

SydneyBeautiful experience!!
Left on 08/21/2010 for a stay in July 2010
My partner and I stayed at La Encantadora for 3 nights in July. The house is beautiful and the owners Chris and Helen immediately made us feel at home and were wonderful hosts. The breakfast every morning was a 3 course delight and each day was different. Our room was the Rose room on the ground floor - the king size bed was divine! If it wasn't for the fabulous breakfast I would have struggled to get out of bed each morning. The house is located in San Filipe which is only a short bus ride into town and the buses go regularly and stop right outside the house. Oaxaca city is beautiful but i also really enjoyed escaping the hustle and bustle of the city every day to return to the tranquility of the B&B.; Helen and Chris were entertaining hosts and a wealth of knowledge on the area which is useful when we were only staying for 3 days. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at La Encantadora and will always have fond memories of my time in Oaxaca!

Mexico CityGreat House in Oaxaca
Left on 04/05/2010 for a stay in April 2010
I stayed at La Encantadora with my family over Semana Santa 2010. The house is beautifully decorated and spotless, and the owners are very friendly. Helene prepares a delicious three course breakfast that will keep you going until Mexican lunch time (about 3:00 p.m.).
The property is located in San Felipe del Agua, Oaxaca's most affluent suburb located about five kilometers north of the centro historico. The distance might be a problem if you don't have a car, but on the other hand taxis and public transport are fairly inexpensive in Oaxaca and being in a quiet suburb lets you enjoy the peaceful garden and terrace during your free time.
All in all a great value and, in my view, a better option than the often noisy and overpriced hotels in the city center.
