Casa Murguia captures the essence of indoor/outdoor Mexican living. It was built in the classic Mexican style of the 1950's with most rooms opening on to patios surrounded by gardens. Rent this entire 5 bdrm villa or just one of the four deluxe bungalow...s - scroll down for indiv. desciptions.

Casa Murguia, rich in architectural details like hand-painted tiles and artist-designed ironwork, is a singular Oaxaca home featured in “In a Mexican Garden: Courtyards, Pools and Open Air Living Rooms”. The owner, Mary Jane Gagnier, ran an arts & craft gallery in Oaxaca for over many years and the casa is decorated with original art and vintage textiles from her collection.

The stunning 75 foot long swimming pool is not only a tranquil focus in the center of the property but offers privacy between the rentals. It's a fabulous pool for swimming laps, just 4 ft at its deepest it is also ideal for acua-exercises. Steps lead into a shallower section just 3 ft. deep before dropping down another ft. It is impeccably-maintained, heated with solar panels & covered each night to conserve a pleasant temperature.

Gardens rich in exotic plants make for fine birdwatching. Birds of Paradise, Plumerias, organ cacti and trumpet vines are just a sample of the visually stunning flora.

The poolside patios are furnished with dining tables & chairs, and chaise lounges for great outdoor living. The high adobe walls and trees make Casa Murguia quiet by any standards, guests can't believe they're in the heart of the city ( imagine the rooms at the pricey Camino Real Hotel just 2 blocks away where the windows of the guest rooms open right on to the sidewalk).

Casa Murguia is safe. The gate out of the walled compound is locked each night (each renter has their own key) and the fulltime day staff is available to assist renters with questions and needs as they arise. But Mary Jane and Bobby, who live at their guest ranch Rancho Pitaya, 25 minutes away, can be reached 24/7 on the house phone or via email. Ask about a combined stay at both places on your trip to Oaxaca.

There is wifi throughout Casa Murguia and unlimited 5 gallon bottles of purified spring water are of no extra charge - two things that make life considerably easier in Oaxaca.

Great restaurants start just a block north of Casa Murguia. But with the well-equipped kitchens in the rentals, all with gas ranges, plus the luxury of daily housekeeping service why not explore the charming Merced food market 5 blocks away. This is where the owners do their shopping. The produce is fresh and seasonal, the meat and cheese can be trusted and the tortillas are handmade! But right at the corner you can stock up on fruits, basic vegetables and dry-goods. A couple of blocks west from Casa Murguia, in the heart of the historic center you'll find great dining, shopping, museums and theatre.

INDIVIDUAL RENTAL DESCRIPTIONS:

The Bird of Paradise, on east side is a one bdrm bungalow, has largest bdrm w/ kingbed or 2 twins & a large living /dining room. Extra twin can be added to bdrm or living area. Ceiling fans in living room and bdrm. Compact kitchen w/ 2-person breakfast nook. Bathroom just off the bdrm w/shower in the tub. L R opens to patio. Has 650 sq. ft of interior living space. Very quiet sleeping.

The Aguacate Casita is 1 bdrm in northwest corner. Has roomy, well-equipped kitchen w/ dining table for 4 & opens to spacious private patio. The bdrm can have a kingbed or 2 twin beds & w/ space for single bed in L.R. 600 sq. feet interior space. Ceiling fan in bedroom. Gets morning sun, very quiet & private, terrific poolside patio.

The Villa del Sol at south end of pool has huge covered patio. Perfect for family needing proper second bdrm. Big glass doors open from kitchen/living/dining area to patio with views of mountains. Main bdrm has 1 kingbed or 2 twin beds & opens on to both big bathroom or living area. The 2nd bdrm w/ a double sofabed has ceiling fan & skylight. Is entered thru the bathroom. The main bdrm may get modest street noise but the ceiling fan effectively dulls the outside sounds.

The Bougainvillea Suite is slightly smaller than the others but still a great bungalow w/ spacious bdrm with 1 king or 2 twin beds. The galley kitchen opens to patio or dining nook/den. Rents at 10% less than the others.

Additional Location Information

Casa Murguia is located between Avenida Juarez and Pino Suarez on the east side of the historic centre of Oaxaca city. No buses run along Calle Murguia making it exceptionally quiet for the city.
Casa Murguia's location is unbeatable, it is easy walking everywhere in the historic center. And if you are heading out of town you'll probably be going into the Valle de Tlacolula or towards Ocotlan and this is easy with the casa on the east side of the centro.
There is a safe private driveway for the exclusive use of renters and the owners.

Low-season 2 wk. 1,120. 3 wk. 1,360.
Holiday two week rate 2,200.
High Winter season 2013 / 2014 - 2 wk. 1,780 / 3 wk. 2,200. rate. Rates include: Housekeeping Sunday thru Friday, bottled drinking water, weekly linen and towel change, pool towels, wireless internet, parking and all other amenities listed.

  We are a family of 4 with a son 18 and daughter 20 we travelled to Oaxaca for Christmas in 2012. What a great time of year to see Oaxaca.
  Casa Murgia is a home with several rental suites in Oaxaca city. The courtyard has a mature garden and a beautiful pool with sea creature design in the tile for when you want to relax. The home is centrally located and is walking distance to the Zocalo. There is a local market, Merced market, about a 15 minute walk straight down the street. Be sure to purchase the spicy peanut , garlic and chili snack mix at the market if you go..Great with beer , trust me you will be hooked. A corner store for quick supplies, beer, sandwiches and fruit. There is a supermarket on the same road before you get to Merced market . A taco stand was parked in front of the corner store every so often, it was always packed. We did not get a chance to try them but they sure looked popular. Though we did not use the public buses this time there is a bus that runs down the side street right there.
  The unit we stayed in had a full kitchen, king size bed, full bath and separate room with 2 twin beds for the family. There was a table and chairs in the unit however most times we enjoyed and sitting at the in the courtyard in front of our unit. Bibi the property Hostess is bilingual English/Spanish. Bibi helped us arrange cabs and could point us in whatever direction we headed that day. Through Casa Murgia we went to Rancho Pitaya and enjoyed a horseback ride in the valley.   Casa Murgia is your home away from home. We found Casa Murgia quiet though right in the city. A great place to make your base while exploring Oaxaca. You can spot Casa Murgia from down the block, it is the house on the street with a garden of banana trees out front! We recommend this accommodation and would definitely return to Casa Murgia .

  It was like home.

  The service was amazing. The house keeper was very sweet, always available, diligent, and informative. The property was peaceful and beautiful. The house felt like it was a little resort. It felt safe. Our group looked forward to going "home" each night. The location was very good. close to Zocalo. Easy walk to & from. Also, there's a few little stores nearby (walking distance) and also bakeries and coffe shops nearby as well.
  
  The only thing I didn't like was the mosquitos. But a little bug spray can fix that!

  Mosquitos come with the first rains in the spring and are gone by fall. All the windows have screens so if doors are kept shut mosquitos shouldn't be a problem in the sleeping areas. The mosquitos in this area carry no disease just the itch that comes with all m. bites. I'm from Canada and the mosquitos in Oaxaca don't hold a candle to the vicious things that swarm northern Ontario.

  The Bird of Paradise suite was so much space that my travelling companion and I never felt we were impinging on each other! It stretched out along the pool and garden areas, with lots of windows. The beds were firm and the furniture comfortable, and it was very quiet. The location was an easily walkable distance from the zocalo, shops and restaurants. We had a laundromat across the street and a small market on the same street. We soon met the other guests who were happy to share travel tips and even bird identifications! A great home away from home!My only quibble would be the small hot water heater for the bathroom, we had to shower quickly.

  Iris, I appreciate your comment on the water heater. It is new but just doesn't perform like the others that are installed at Casa Murguia. Time to change it.

  We stayed for two weeks and it was by far the best "home away from home" experience I've had. The place is absolutely gorgeous, the pictures here barely make it justice, and the way we were taken care of by the owner and the housekeeper was excellent.
  
  Definitely staying there in future trips.
