Obidos Castle - Unique luxury 3 bedroom house

Set in a quiet corner of the medieval castle of Obidos, this three bedroom, two bathroom house has been lovingly restored and beautifully decorated to provide a unique experience to all who visit.

The scenery around the house is fascinating. The house is right up against the castle wall and behind it is a terraced olive garden that leads up to the castle wall from where one can walk around the entire perimeter of the castle (if you're feeling energetic!).

The house is a fusion of ancient medieval history and gloriously sumptuous modern luxury. Although it has been almost completely rebuilt and restored, there are parts of

t...he building which are said to pre-date the castle walls, which were built between the 12th and 14th centuries.

Open the house up to the courtyard in the summer months and let the sun shine in, or switch on the underfloor heating in the winter and enjoy it in complete comfort. Most of the luxurious furniture in the house is bespoke and was made to measure by a local furniture designer. This is offset by a number of genuine 17th and 18th century pieces.

All three bedrooms are cosy double rooms with hand-made wrought-iron chandelliers or medieval wall-sconces. The beds are modern and very comfortable, with excellent quality mattresses, generously soft bedding and crisp freshly-pressed linen. Two of the bedrooms are upstairs and the third and largest bedroom is a converted stable situated across the courtyard.

In addition to a small shower-room downstairs, the house boasts a huge suspended upstairs bathroom with jacuzzi, hand-painted tiles and stained glass windows. Access to the bathroom is via one of the upstairs bedrooms which is just one of the quirky features of this house!

The house features top of the range modern conveniences such as a washer dryer, a dish washer, microwave with grill and of course a refrigerator. These have been tastefully tucked away so the house appears more geniunely authentic. The kitchen furniture was hand-made from solid chestnut by a local carpenter who specialises in medieval wood craft and was finished in beautiful wrought iron by a local metalworker and artist who uses only traditional methods. There is also a wood-burning stove in the kitchen which is fully functional but will probably not be necessary for everyday cooking requirements as the electric hotplate and microwave are much more convenient.

Next to the kitchen there is a small fully stocked wine cellar which offers a selection of reasonably priced wines. Wine prices are listed - guests are welcome to use the cellar and will be charged on departure.

The diningroom, which opens onto a sunny courtyard is home to an ancient but fully functional water-well which is one of the oldest parts of the house. Although the home's water requirements are catered for by modern plumbing of course! The dining room has a lovely distressed cherry-wood dining table surrounded by red leather chairs and a bench that together seat up to eight guests.

The lounge is furnished with a silver velvet chesterfield sofa and black velvet chairs. There is also a drinks cabinet and a small card table.

Additional Location Information

Obidos Castle is an important part of Portuguese history and has a fascinating past. Tourists flock to the busier areas of the castle that feature excellent restaurants and shops, but this house is tucked away in a beautiful and peaceful corner. The castle hosts a number of festivals throughout the year including the International Chocolate Festival and The Medieval Fair, as well as a number of music and art events and antique and organic markets.

Nearby there is a wealth of entertainment with world-class golf courses, beautiful mountain biking country, top surfing and leisure beaches, the Obidos Lagoon, local vinyards, lovely forests, and many stunning examples of architecture including monestaries, churches and other places of historical interest.

  Four of us shared this lovely house located just inside the castle walls in the beautiful and historic village of Obidos. The owner was extremely helpful, sending detailed information in advance about the area and local services and promptly answering all our questions. The property manager was courteous and thoroughly explained the amenities (and wonderful eccentricities!) in the house. The house was in excellent order upon our arrival. The property is a lovely, traditional villa with unique and beautiful furnishings. Every room is a treat to explore, filled with both historical features and modern luxuries. We spent four nights in Obidos and could have easily spent many more. Wandering through the cobblestone streets of the village and taking excursions into the countryside filled our days and nights. The last evening, we set up the BBQ in the private patio area and enjoyed a home cooked meal of steak, shrimp and summer salads. We made good use of the wine cellar off the kitchen which is well stocked and has a variety of local vintages available for purchase. I highly recommend this property. The only problem we experienced during our stay was that the adjacent house was undergoing remodeling work and the construction noise started early. The builders were friendly and we adapted to their working hours with earlier morning starts. Otherwise, the house was perfect and we have only wonderful memories of our stay in Obidos.

  Perfect in every way; imaginatively decorated to suit the medieval theme of the cottage and surrounding village; fully equipped with quaint and characterful mod cons; plenty of entertainment space, romantic bedrooms and close proximity to shops, restaurants and seaside resorts.
