Description from the owner

The mill is a magical hilltop haven, a beautiful and unique private home that is occasionally let to the lucky traveller seeking something secluded and special. Perfect for escaping couples and families alike.

From the mill you can enjoy the Alentejo, Portugal's best kept secret, at its best. Situated in an ecological reserve the mill stands on a hill overlooking the plains that roll their way from the Atlantic coast to the Spanish border.

It's just a ten minute walk to the local village shops and restaurant, a fifteen minute drive to the nearest town, banks and supermarkets etc. Fabulous beaches are 30 minutes away and wonder...Read more

    Additional Location Information

The area is perfect for anyone wanting to get off the beaten track and away from tourist madness. Roads are quiet, beaches have space, prices are lower, amenities are good, the people are friendly and you get a real taste of what is best about Portugal. The climate is Californian.

Once known as the bread basket of Portugal the region has always been associated with food. If you like pork then here you will truly taste it. You'll probably rediscover the taste of onions and find out what supermarkets stole from the humble tomato. Fare is simple but fabulous. Porco Preto will steal your soul and the region's wine will find it.

      Impossible not to relax!

Left on 09/02/2012 for a stay in July 2012

This was the most relaxing holiday possible. The mill is very isolated and absolutely private. We swam naked in the pool, read books in different nooks of the garden and watched birds of prey fly over the surrounding hills.

There is a great selection of Dvds, fast wi-fi and a nice small library. The kitchen is comprehensively outfitted - we made pavlova, massive soups and wok stir fries.

It is about 1.5 hours to the west coast or the algarve, so we would stay one day at the mill, and then go to the beach every second day. There are really nice little restaurants 15 mins away in various directions.

The owner is incredibly nice and helpful, and his great information book about what to do and where to eat and shop means you don't need to do any research yourself.

Make sure you visit Viennamina the black pig at the bottom of the hill. She comes when you call her.

      A unique and wonderful place.

Definitely one of the best, if not the best, holiday we've ever

Left on 08/09/2012 for a stay in June 2012

Mere words cannot describe our wonderful holiday at the Mill on the hill. From the moment we arrived till the day we departed we relaxed, had fun & forgot the stresses of work. The location is superb, the views are amazing in every direction and the atmosphere is magical.

The beautiful gardens are full of butterflies, bees, birds & bugs (nothing nasty but definitely not usually seen in the UK) and the Mill itself has everything needed for a break from everyday life - comfortable bed, well-equipped kitchen, powerful shower, eco-friendly lighting (solar & wind power plus loads of candles), romantic "grotto" with twinkly lights & passion flowers, and the most breathtaking night skies, sunrises & sunsets.

Despite the peace & tranquillity, the Mill isn't isolated, with a wonderful butcher nearby & two very good supermarkets within easy driving distance. The local restaurants are excellent, although we didn't eat out often, preferring to sit in the grotto or the sun with a bottle of wine, olives, bread & cheese or a barbequed steak & salad.

I could write so much more but suggest you go & find out for yourself – I’m sure you won’t regret it. We have already booked to return next summer & just knowing that we are going back brings a smile to my face!

Left on 07/24/2012 for a stay in July 2012

The owners described it as their little bit of paradise and we cant agree more. It was absolutely stunning. Swimming pool was a welcome sight as we hadn't realised it was there. Simply beautiful and very easy to arrange. Thank you so much for restoring it!

      What a fabulous place !!!

Left on 07/11/2012 for a stay in July 2012

Fabulous and totally unique. We had a wonderful stay, with views of the alentejo countryside that must be unrivalled. Extremely comfortable, clean and well appointed. Lots of info on where to eat, swim, shop etc, but after a busy week in Lisbon we were more than happy to just spend our week relaxing at the mill. We caught quite a breezy week, but then I suppose you don't build a windmill where there's no wind !! That did not affect our enjoyment one bit. Excellent information and assistance from the considerate owners. Definitely to be recommended.

      Perfect

Left on 06/27/2012 for a stay in May 2012

In a nutshell...Eden, the property, location and whole vibe of the Mill was amazing.
As I work offshore as a diver it took a great deal of planning, flights, hire car etc but all the planning was well well worth it.
I had gotten in Contact with Mark [the owner] and arranged a real surprise for my partner there, he provided the flowers, bubbly and rose petals on the bed in the amazing attic bedroom, I was to propose to my partner on arrival.
Nothing was too much trouble for him and the house keeper Louise, they helped in everyway, the perfect hosts.
The Mill was amazing, the drive up the hill to be greeted by that white tower was a view that will stay with myself and Leighannes memory for ever.
The amenities and surroundings were breathtaking, clean, all mod cons, everything you would ever need, your own little kingdom.
We sampled many resturants nearby, all were fantastic value for money and great fun, on occations we cooked in, barbies etc washed down with plenty of fantastc wine, half hour away are the most clean, gorgeous beaches you will ever want, most you have to yoursef.
It was an amzing experience, memorable, gorgeous and so so special. Mark and Laura can be so proud of that little Eden they have created.
We are proud to be a part of the Mills history now and it will always be a part of us forever.
We are already planning our return.
Oh...and by the way she said yes ...

Peace and quiet with spectacular views

Left on 05/11/2012 for a stay in February 2012

Despite having looked at lots of photographs before going, I was not prepared for the reality. I could spend days just sitting and looking and listening to the birds, just occasionally moving around to get a different perspective. But it was also great to go out - walking and sightseeing - eating out or buying food to cook in - a delightful untouristy area. And the mill itself was glorious and comfortable, with the owner having thought so carefully about what we might want or need.

Left on 04/29/2012 for a stay in February 2012

The Herons on the Telegraph Poles tell you both that you are nearly there, and that it is going to be glorious... and there it is on its own Hill with a 360 degee view of this lovely quiet farming basin. On top of the world. Inside, exactly what was needed, everything there for comfort, and for eating in... saucepans..frying pans... caffetier. Great roomy bathroom, stoves for the evenings in the sitting room and kitchen-dinning area- no need the day, even in February. Fabulous "loft" major bedroom, lovely guest room and smashing sitting room on the first floor, all there, and all very much reflecting itself, a mill. Delightful. We eat out twice in the local restaurants, great food in good traditional local style, low key,no frills, and all the better for it.Took one trip out, to Evora, absolutely fascinating, and the only bit of "tourism " for the whole stay. I was very contented with the immediate vicinity of the mill for gentle strolls and exploring, and the mill and it's walled garden for peace, quiet and lunches in its various sitting areas. Fabulous.I shall be there again, and possibly just a little later to catch the glory of the Spring flowers.

Left on 04/06/2012 for a stay in August 2009

I stayed at the mill for a few days with a friend and I must say it was one of the best places and experiences I've ever had.
Quiet, lovely and sunny during the day and amazing skies at night, never seen so many stars!
I recommend eating in the outdoor table any of the great cheeses and wines from the area and then relax enjoying the sunset.
Highly recommended for those looking for a different experience in Portugal and who value staying in a unique place.

You won't ever find a place the same as the Mill on the Hill. It has immense character and it's location is breathtaking. In particular it will suit the adventurous and those seeking out a bit of fun. Eating out in this area is simple but very acceptable - and offers extremely good value for money. The comfort of the bed exceeded that experienced in the Pousada we last stayed in. A really excellent region for walking and star gazing if those activities interest you. You will be rewarded for being up to observe the sunrise and sunset but that will depend on the time of year that you visit!

Left on 12/23/2011 for a stay in April 2011

Sadly did not live up to expectations, despite the undisputed fabulaous views, arrived to encounter building work and instead of the pool as promised ; a paddling pool surrounded by building rubble. Interior very basic, damp and lacking in comfort. Have travvelled the world over and happy to go rustic but encountered cheap Ikea furniture that had seen better days. Owner slow to respond to complaints.

Perfect getaway for rest and relaxation

Left on 10/11/2011 for a stay in September 2011

We recently spent 12 nights at the mill, and were completely satisfied with everything. The location was the main attraction, as it offers total peace and tranquility, whilst providing all the home comforts you will need. However, there was plenty to explore and see during our stay, mainly the coast, but also some great lakes if you don't like swimming in the sea. The local cuisine is fairly basic, consisting mainly of pork and fish, but every meal was well cooked and full of flavor. The perfect break if you want to unwind and soak up some sun. Highly recommended.

      Magical Stay at Tranquil Windmill

Left on 08/31/2011 for a stay in August 2011

Just spent 2 amazing weeks at the windmill in the alentejo with husband and two 15-year-old twins. We all loved the place, The mill is equipped with everything needed for a fabulous holiday: kitchen equipment; beach stuff for the kids; sun loungers; pool; loads of seating areas to follow the sun; books; Dvds. Everything necessary for an excellent holiday. Great beaches are 40 minutes away. The views from the mill are unspoiled in all directions. The place is so quiet, which for us was a welcome break away from the rush of life at home. We would definitely go back one day for another chill-out break. Great restaurants too within 5-10 minutes' drive. Everything you could want in a holiday home.

Left on 07/08/2011 for a stay in June 2011

This is the best place we've been to for complete seclusion and quiet, without feeling isolated.Plenty of facilities nearby, but we loved being there so much we spent most of our time at the mill.Inside and outside everything is just right, and the views are amazing. It was perfect for us as a couple (and places for couples are not often that great, with limited space and privacy) and would also be superb for a family holiday or friends sharing,as there's so much space. A lot of thought has gone into making the mill a great place to be,and it is our number one for that reason.

      Breathtaking location

Left on 05/29/2011 for a stay in March 2011

We were guests at the Mill for 2 weeks and loved it, although we had intractable problems with the photo voltaic electricity supply which forced us to rely entirely on the generator and to finally cut short our anticipated 3 week stay by one week.

We are world travelers and the Mill is one of the most engaging places we have ever stayed in. The amenities are simple but quite adequate. This area of the alentejo (Ourique - Odemira) is exceptionally unspoiled and lovely and green in the springtime, with the hills and fields carpeted with wild flowers.

We recommend the Mill to those looking for isolation, peace and quiet, and don't mind fueling wood stoves in cooler weather. A special place, but not for everybody!

The photos do not do this place justice. We arrived and the rest of the world fell away. The location is heavenly. The children (6, 8, 11) vanished with a whoop to splash in the pool and we sank into the tranquillity. There was a good information pack with everything we needed to know about the area, from beaches and places to explore and to eat to atms and petrol stations. There was a pack of essentials with food and wine too. Writing this makes me relax. We were nervous about being off the beaten tourist track but this turned out to be perfect. No wonder tripadvisor voted it number 3 in the world.

Good info provided on local area, shops etc and lovely welcome pack which we greatly appreciated. We enjoyed trip to local swimming lakes - saw turtles! The food was very good at the restaurant on the Odemira road - O Barreirinho Restaurante - unfussy eaterie but very friendly, popular and excellent value. Relaxing holiday in untouristy 'real' Portugal.

This place was amazing, a few things to catch onto like how to keep the hot water on. All in all great place to hang with your family. Lots of day trips. While we were there it was 120 F, I think that was exceptionally hot, but we just simply went to the coast a bunch and the beaches are like California 50-75 years ago so pristine... The people in Portugal are very sweet. This is a win/ win for all

The epitome of rural tranquility in a unique setting!

Left on 12/04/2009 for a stay in May 2008

For those of you who are looking for urban noise, gaudy tourist shops,
flashing arcades, music bars, nightclubs and loud drunks in the street - this
is not the place for you!

Just an hour and fifteen minutes drive from Faro airport (enjoy the beautiful
and unspoilt Portuguese countryside on the way) the Mill on the hill is
rustic, homely, cosy and down to earth - just the way it should be! Very
much off the beaten track, yet only a lovely hours drive from the town of
Odemira and then a little further on to the gorgeous beaches and town of
Zambujeira Do Mar. The local village is only a ten minute walk down the hill,
and for a major stock up the town of Orique is just a twenty minute drive
away, where there is a great supermaket, shops and petrol.

The Mill on the hill is a great base to adventure from, and there is lots to go
and explore! It is an oasis of calm and the epitome of rural tranquility in an
extremely unique setting. A new rooftop room and spiral staircase has just
been added to what was already a lovely and unique space - the views from
on high are breathtaking! With little more than the tinkle of goat bells for
company, it is a place for BBQ's under the stars and great conversation. There is nothing not to like here! Pack light, relax, explore and enjoy!

A Fantastic Mill 'Retreat' in Portugal.

Left on 11/23/2009 for a stay in November 2008

I went to stay at the Hilltop Windmill in Odemira at the suggestion of a
friend and I can recommend it to anybody who is considering a break to
rest and recoup from the hectic demands of city life.
An hours drive from the airport we took advantage of the Ryan Air offer and
travelled for a ridiculously low price. Hiring a car on arrival we drove
through the real Portugal..a world away from the fun seeking throngs of
tourists that flock to the algarve..(although not far away for those who
need the nocturnal stimulation the nightclubs offer...)
At Odimira we were treated to a glimpse of Portuguese rural life; with its
mix of great food and wine , including(my own particular favourite) gallons
      of wonderful port...
The Mill itself sits on the top of a hill overlooking miles of breathtaking
scenery. We were able to drive all the way up, which was a relief!
With a cosy feel inside the only problem was deciding who got the luxurious
      roof bedroom..
. A terrace outside provided a spectacular backdrop to enjoy our
meals. There's a good supermarket in the nearby village with very
reasonable prices, friendly locals (including a few expats for company if you
      want ) ...
But for me the real enjoyment of Odemira lies in spending time relaxing at
the Mill; .Its such a peaceful, unique and cool location, I can't wait to go
      back...

      Tranquil Retreat

Left on 11/23/2009 for a stay in February 2009

I spent a week here with 2 colleagues, working on ideas for a show. The area is so quite and intimate with views of the landscape spanning out into the distance of cork trees with the little village at the bottom of the hill. Within a 20minute drive there is a larger village for all your shopping needs.

The weather whilst we were there was wonderful sunshine and blue skies throughout the week. On waking seeing a morning mist shrouding the land before us was so beautiful the area is so peaceful with the bleating and bell ring of the hillside goats adding to the atmosphere, only the distant sound of the traffic occasionally intruding in on us.

The windmill itself is nice and tidy with outside seating all around the area, we ate outside everyday.

For somewhere to go and be creative and be a way from the grind of the city I would say this is a good place to stay
