We invite you to examine our effort to help build a sustainable world. Staying at The Wharf Hub is an opportunity to practice MODERATION, build UNITY with others, SAVE our seas through reef building, experience FREEDOM cycling the Motu Trails, and be AWED with nature around us..
The Wharf Hub offers full home like facilities. The villa house itself has four bedrooms. The Masters Room has a queen bed and river views, the Upper Deck sleeps 3 in single beds and there's a spare high loft bed as well, our Sunny Oak room has a comfortable double bed and Below Decks room with its original woodwork sleeps 4 and has HD TV as well. Smaller s...tay numbers make for a friendly homelike atmosphere. Continental breakfast included in the stay price.
Set your own agenda or be guided with our local knowledge and suggestions for activities to help you tune into the nature around us. Included in your accommodation rate is equipment for you to really actively explore the area. We have sea/river kayaks, fishing lines and rods for wharf and river fishing, mountain bikes for the Motu sand dune trails. Inexpensive short local must see guided tours of local interest are available. Do the maths yourself but we believe this works out as very good value.
The Wharf Hub itself is nearly 100 years old and we aim to keep its original character. Currently there is just the one bathroom and another under construction.. Beds are made up ready for you. The kitchen caters to most styles of cooking. Our unique stays offer relaxing spaces with decks for sunrises and sunsets, river and beach walks, cycle rides though sand dunes and bush, kayaking, fishing and more.
Most comment that traveling out East in New Zealand is to be traveling back in time. In a town of heritage buildings, real Maori culture, no traffic lights or parking meters (people riding horses in town still happens.) Our accommodation The Wharf Hub is themed accordingly to enhance this step back to earlier times when things were built to last and repaired when they broke.
Being by the Wharf we have a strong marine theme. We offer complimentary NZ themed videos and love to share our knowledge on our private venture to 'enhance marine life' with reef modules. We are home to New Zealand's only 'community reef'. Growing enough fish for all can become a reality.
The Wharf Hub makes for a great place to come back, refresh, enjoy the evening. There's opportunity to share your experiences with others and learn about the other 'must see or do' things in the area.
Many who stay here at The Wharf Hub use it as a base to go out and explore the isolated and very picturesque East Cape area (first to see a new day), Waioeka Gorge (NZ longest gorge) or take day trips to Whakatane, Rotorua and NZ only active offshore volcanic White Island.
The house has simple yet clean and comfortable furnishings. We are more functional than flashy and like to practice moderation. ( the house was built in 1922.)
If you come by bus to Opotiki give us a call and we will pick you up and drop you off at the end of your stay. There is no public transport, not even a taxi in Opotiki as everything is within walking distance.
Opotiki is a picturesque town by the coast but accounted as a poorer socio economic town. Your stay here and involvement with our fisheries enhancement project will help to reverse this tend and build health and wealth for the people.
Opotiki is also distinguished with having the highest percentage of heritage buildings of any small town in NZ. It is also majority Maori population, a true cultural experience awaits you. Taketakerau is perhaps the oldest living thing you will ever see at over 2000 years of age.
The kitchen/dining area and lounge are spacious areas and equipped with DVD and TV, fireplace and WIFI Internet. Full kitchen cooking facilities. Gas stove, gas hot water, laundry. In 2012 an original Shacklock Orion wood stove installed. In Winter months experience authentic wood stove cooking. The meals (and pizzas) it can cook are superb.
Most of the year The Wharf Hub is very peaceful, and is close enough to hear, glimpse and smell the sea. The front sun downer veranda is ideal for relaxed enjoyment of evening sunsets and watching the night sky.
The home overlooks the historic Opotiki Wharf which is where you can join locals in catching a sea trout (kahawai) fish for dinner or whitebait from Sept to Dec. There is an excellent two lane concrete boating ramp here too if you have your own boat. There's plenty of parking space on the property.
Being so close to the Opotiki CBD allows you to leave your car at home and take a 5 minute walk to bars, great restaurants, Museum, and explore the historic Opotiki Township on foot.
Once you make a booking you will have access to our simple local nature activities displayed on our web site.
