Many comment that traveling out East in New Zealand is to be traveling back in time. People riding horses in the town is a common sight, heritage buildings, Maori culture, nature, river swims and lots more are literally here at your doorstep. Our accommodation The Wharf Hub is themed accordingly to enhance this step back in time experience.

The villa itself has four themed bedrooms. The Masters Room has a double bed and river views, the Upper Deck sleeps 3 in single beds and there's a spare high loft bed as well, our Sunny Oak room has a double bed and Below Decks room with its original woodwork has three single beds and TV. Our num...bers staying are usually very small, around 5.

The Wharf Hub offers two stay options. For the independent sorts who have transport and just need some directions then there's the Self Directed Stays quoted here at $60 a night per person. For example, this suits those staying to take on the famed Motu Trails cycle tracks and come with their own bikes.

The second option is Guided Stays. This suits those who like more local information so they can get the most out of their short stay time in Opotiki, East Coast. Guided stays also offer full tuition, greater security, transport if required, and includes any gear needed such kayaks, fishing rods, books, videos, mountain bikes,etc. The rate is $100 per person a night.

With 4 bedrooms and many varied sleeping options available our aim to accommodate you in a room to your tastes and individual needs.

The Wharf Hub itself is nearly 100 years old and we aim to keep its original character. Currently there is just the one bathroom, just like in the olden days. Beds made up ready for you. The kitchen caters to most styles of cooking.

Being by the Wharf we have a strong marine theme. We offer complimentary marine and NZ themed videos and love to share our knowledge on our private venture to 'enhance marine life' with reef modules.

The Wharf Hub makes for a great place to come back, refresh, enjoy the evening. There's opportunity to share your experiences with others and learn about the other 'must see or do' things in the area.

Many who stay here at The Wharf Hub use it as a base to go out and explore the isolated and very picturesque East Cape area, (get to be the first in the World to see a new day start) or take day trips to Whakatane, Rotorua and the active offshore volcanic White Island.

The house has simple yet clean and comfortable furnishings. We are more functional than flashy ( the house was built in 1922.) Other sleeping options include a sleep out and tent sites.

If you come by bus to Opotiki give us a call and we will pick you up and drop you off at the end of your stay. There is no public transport, not even a taxi in Opotiki as everything is within walking distance.

Opotiki is a picturesque town by the coast but accounted as a poorer socio economic town. Your stay here and involvement with our fisheries enhancement project will help to reverse this tend and build health and wealth for the people.

Opotiki is also distinguished with having the highest percentage of heritage buildings of any small town in NZ. It is also majority Maori population, a true cultural experience awaits you. Taketakerau is perhaps the oldest living thing you will ever see at over 2000 years of age.

The kitchen/dining area and lounge are spacious areas and equipped with DVD and TV, fireplace and WIFI Internet. Full kitchen cooking facilities. Electric stove, gas hot water, laundry. New in 2012 is an original Shacklock Orion wood stove installed. Experience authentic wood stove cooking. The meals (and pizzas) it can cook are superb.

Most of the year The Wharf Hub is very peaceful, and is close enough to hear, glimpse and smell the sea. The front sun downer veranda is ideal for relaxed enjoyment of evening sunsets and watching the night sky.

The home overlooks the historic Opotiki Wharf which is where you can join locals in catching a sea trout (kahawai) fish for dinner or whitebait from Sept to Dec. There is an excellent two lane concrete boating ramp here too if you have your own boat. There's plenty of parking space on the property.

Being so close to the Opotiki CBD allows you to leave your car at home and take a 5 minute walk to bars, great restaurants, Museum, and explore the historic Opotiki Township on foot.Read more

Additional Location Information

The Wharf Hub is set just 30m from the waters edge. Following the 1964 flood a stop bank system was built to protect the town and you. You can leave your car parked at The Wharf Hub property and walk 5 minutes into Opotiki's main shopping area, where you can read of our history, visit the Museum, get good coffee at cafes, buy sports equipment, visit the Banks, and get meals, etc.
Opotiki is a poorer socio economic town and your stay here helps improve the outlook of locals.
In 2012 the new Motu Trails sand dunes walkway/cycleway opened. This is becoming very popular and you can start your walk or ride from the wharf outside.

  We stayed there with a total of 4 end of november 2012. The 2 friends with us recommend Lloyd and as we were looking for a place to meet them "The Wharf Hub" was the choice. We had a pleasant stay. The house is spacious, "typical" new zealand style with a beautiful wooden floor. The fire place was not in use (it was always summer) but cozy nevertheless. The sleping rooms are tidy and well spaced and you can make use of all the kitchen utilities you need for preparing your meal. There is no ensuite bathroom, but the one is clean. We also made use of the fishing activities he offers out on the sea. The red snappers, king fishes.. were then prepared together with Loyd and we had a great meal (and doggy bag for our next aim). Opotiki is maybe not the most interesting place to visit but still in the very near of towns like Whakatane. The owner provides everything you need and is ready to share his local knowledge about fishing, marine life and Maori culture and this amkes the stay so beatiful and unique.

  Beautiful house in a nice location

  We stayed here in winter time and we enjoyed the spacious house with its beautiful wooden floor. The fire place was cozy and we felt right at home. Even though it was winter, we enjoyed the crisp sunny mornings and quite warm days, with a lot of outdoor activities on the river mouth and the beach. It is really away from the crowd yet still in reach of bigger towns like Whakatane. The owner provides everything you need and is ready to share his local knowledge about fishing, marine life and Maori culture.
