Additional Location Information
We're about midway between Carcassonne and Narbonne, in the Minervois, a small “terroir” in Languedoc-Roussillon, a large area of central southern France, prized for its full-bodied red wine.
Our region offers most of the advantages of better-known Provence, but is quieter and less crowded; the climate & vegetation are Mediterranean.
We're close to the Mediterranean, the Pyrénées and the Montagne Noire and our area excels year-round in walking, on and off-road cycling and bird-watching; we can suggest the best places for these activities, and others.
L'Ancien Pressoir is at the edge of the quiet, friendly village of Oupia, 28 km. (17 mi.) west of Narbonne, 34 km. (21 mi.) east of the old cité of Carcassonne, less than an hour to the Mediterranean and 10 minutes by car from Minerve or the Canal du Midi. Oupia is surrounded by vineyards, has a small but well-supplied grocery store, post office, restaurant and the 12th century Château d'Oupia, winner of many gold medals in Paris over the years for its wine.
Day excursions include the Pyrénées, Cathar castles, the National Park of the Upper Languedoc, the Montagne Noire, north-eastern Spain as well as the cities of Carcassonne (Europe's biggest, best-preserved medieval walled city), Narbonne (once the Roman capital of southern France), Béziers, Montpellier and Toulouse and the medieval abbeys of Fontfroide and Lagrasse.
Also worth seeing: Collioure, a lovely seaside town on the Mediterranean, just north of Spain, once home to Picasso, Matisse, Derain, Dufy and Chagall.
More: nearby villages, like Roquebrun, with its annual Mimosa festival, Molière’s town of Pézenas, the Oppidum d’Ensérune, a Roman hilltop settlement. Almost all villages and towns are worth exploring by car, by bicycle or on foot.
Good village shop with fresh bread & croissants daily. Full shopping 5 minutes by car, in Olonzac.
Wine-tasting, markets, fêtes, heritage/history (castles, the Canal du Midi, Megalithic remains), beaches, museums, eating (lots of very good restaurants in our area). Ideal for cycling, walking & birding.
Several airports nearby as well as train, but almost no public transportation in immediate vicinity; guests need a car or, at the least, bicycles. Parking is on the quiet road opposite the Pressoir.
We provide a binder full of information on what to see and do, where to eat, the best bike and walking routes, where to shop, tips on travelling in France, etc. etc. and we're available for help if needed.
