You can throw a coconut from the front yard into Punaluu Bay!

Setting on the water's edge of Punalu'u Beach Park, you can literally see the visitors arriving and departing, buying souvenirs and snacks at the concession stands just across the way -- and have an exclusive view of the back side of the lifeguard's station!

Punalu'u Beach Park is THE famous Black Sand Beach (for the Big Island) known for "where the Hawaiian green sea turtles come a shore"!

There are two Lindall cedar homes, Gambrel designed, built eight feet off the ground to take advantage of the gentle ocean breezes and the stunning views.

The large hom...e has 3 bedrooms, 2 baths, a loft, (sleeping up to 6 adults comfortably) and a large living room with sweeping views of the beach and bay. A lanai (porch) spans the front of the house with staircases leading down to two acres of manicured lawn shaded by a bounty of coconut trees marching majestically to the very shore of the Bay.

The smaller cottage is a one bedroom with full bath, living room and a complete a mini kitchen. A cozy retreat for a romantic, secluded honeymoon or vacation!

The Beach Cottage and Beach Home are both fully furnished, including dishes, cookware, linens and all the accessories needed to make your stay comfortable and worry-free!

The property sits on 2 acres of land, which includes private parking under the 8 foot lifted homes. Roadways around the area are paved, house has full public electricity and "local piped water", fully plumbed.

These homes are beach homes -- they are not luxurious nor are they intended to be. They couldn't really blend into the area or be near as authentic or enjoyable were they made fancy! When in the "big house" the outside as seen thru your large picture windows almost seems like you are "there" and, pinch yourself -- indeed you are.

Nothing else comes close to a retreat spent here.

Turtles bask in the sun on the black sand beach, you might fully expect to see a half a dozen turtles within 15 minutes. Be sure to be camera ready!

The snorkling is awesome and there is plenty of space to lay a beach towel down and relax -- either in or out of the sun.

The Green Sand Beach is 40 minutes away and the Volcano National Park 30 minutes away.

There are numerous restaurants, a famous sweetbread bakery, bank, grocery store, laundry, thrift store, hardware store and post office within a short 15 minute drive!

Sitting on the ridge above Punaluʻu is the Hōkūloa Church, a Memorial Chapel and graveyard built near the birthplace of Henry ʻŌpūkahaʻia (1792–1818) who inspired the missionary movement that forever changed Hawaii.

Kiʻi pohaku (petroglyphs) can be found near the County Park Pavilions within a protected area surrounded by a rock wall just past the parking area. It is easy to miss these “unmarked” ancient carvings.

To get to Punalu'u Beach Park, go south out of Kona on Highway ll. After going through the little town of Na'alehu and travelling for about 20 minutes or so, you will reach a four-way junction with a sign on the right that says "Sea Mountain Resort". Take the right turn, and go past the golf course and rest rooms, driving on the black sand to park by the hut that sells t-shirts.

  Do not rent the beach cottage! Called owner and left within 2 hours! Screens not secure from mosquitos, rodent droppings on floor, dirty shower with used soap, used towels and wash cloths hanging. Ewww...
