The perfect getaway and perfect hosts!

Left on 06/10/2013 for a stay in February 2013

This place is a true gem! Our original intent was just to have a place to sleep in between adventures. We found this place the best for just spending most of our time just hanging out. A true pleasure. Jeff and Seneca were the perfect hosts. They are both accomplished stained glass artists and we came home with one of Seneca's pieces which hangs in our window as a reminder of our adventure to the Kalapana Coast. We will be back next year!

      Delightful cottage and hosts

Left on 04/10/2013 for a stay in March 2013

We loved this place. It was toward the end of our three week stay on the island and the relaxed approach to the area and the cottage made our stay peaceful and delightful. This place is beautiful, definitely quaint and cozy but romantic too. The area had lots to do and see, the people were friendly, the shoreline was beautiful. I would stay here again for more than the three days we gave ourselves this year. It is a simple cottage in an exquisite setting. It is the best bargain on the island.

      Peaceful, Wonderful, Perfect

Left on 03/30/2013 for a stay in November 2012

My wife and I stayed at Dolphin Song for 4 nights in early November 2012. Our hosts were fantastic--knowledgeable about the local area, friendly, calm and open. The cabin is small but perfect for 2 (or 1). Everything you need is right there--fridge, 2 burner stove, sink and dishes, and plenty of extras--beach towels, cooler, beach mats, snorkeling gear, maps, radio/cd player, music (mostly local stuff), books. The outside shower was wonderful. The area was quiet and isolated. Even though the road was close to the cabin, so few cars go down it, we did not notice it. Well decorated. Plenty of stars at night! Dark, dark, dark--no annoying street lights or lights of a city! The ocean and a beach is only a 10 minute walk. A bargain! We cannot recommend it enough! If you are going to the Puna area, you cannot find a better place!!

Definately great place and great host!

Left on 03/21/2013 for a stay in March 2013

Oh, I hope I could stay there for at least another week! The cottage is not big but it has everything I need, just like home. You are close to nature, hear the frogs, birds, sound of wind. The milky way in the night is brilliant! This cottage, and the other cottage share the same land with the host, so you can get always get help from the host, while the cottages are properly seperated and you are not disturbed. Seneca showed us around the tropical garden and I realy love the small pond and fruit trees! And I tasted egg fruit and avocado the first time. The cottage is not far away from the tide pool, a great place to do snorkling, and warm pond. We really enjoyed the place, and we only go out in afternoon. Oh, what a great place, I just can't express how I love it!

we found this cottage on craigslist and it way exceeded our expectations. It was very Hawaii and comfortable. Jeff & Seneca are great hosts, they give you space but are there when you need any assistance. It's off the beaten path and quiet and feels so "untouristy" and so relaxing. We like to do and see a lot on our vacation days and relax in the evenings and this was perfect. We could make our meals here - everything provided along with wifi. Would definitely go back if we make it back to the Big Island one day.

      A cottage of nature!

Left on 03/03/2013 for a stay in February 2013

My boyfriend and I were taking vacation in big island and we stayed at Jeff and Seneca's little cottage "Banyan Nook" for about one week. This was truly an interesting experience. The cottage was covered with beautiful flowers and other tropical plants, which makes you feel like so close to the nature. You can hear frogs in the night and bird in the morning. We often see little cute geckos around too. The outdoor shower was quite an experience. It was a bit chilly in the first couple of days during our stay when it was constantly having rain shower, but I started to appreciate it more and more during the sunny days. The bed is so comfortable that I think this is the most comfortable bed I had very slept on other than my own. The cottage is just off the shore and you can just walk to the beach to see sun rise. The owner, Jeff and Seneca, are both very friendly and have good taste of decoration and art. However, to be fair, Banyan Nook is too tiny for two persons, after laying our baggage, there is barely any room left. But for that price, I think it is still a good deal. Also, the cottage is located south of Pohoa, so it is very convenient to visit those tide pools and warm ponds on route 137. But it does require quite a lot of driving if you want to go other part of the island. So plan well before you go. If you want a relaxing trip just on the south side of the island, this cottage is definitely where you want to be!

Left on 02/25/2013 for a stay in April 2012

This place is like a rare earthen gem. My boyfriend and I stayed several times since our first time in 2012. The cottage is cute and decorated sweet with anything you may need. We layed outside in the grassy garden area after dark and literally watched the stars move above us. I felt free and clear and at peace. Jeff and Seneca were kind and generous, leaving us the BBQ grill and any beach supplies we needed. I even invited the kitty inside our cabin for a nap. Infact, we will be returning with our honeymooning friends from ms in June 2013!!! You must, must, must consider this place if you're looking for something in the area or just want to go on a mini vacation and you already live here like us. No lie, I cried when we left.

Truely a relaxing and beautiful experience

Left on 12/18/2012 for a stay in December 2012

Jeff and Seneca are great hosts and very accomodating. I spent 8 nights at Dolphin Song and truely relaxed. I really love the area, you can swin at pohiki or the warm ponds down the beautiful winding jungle road. It's great especially if you upgrade to a jeep. You can also snorkle at Kapoho tide pools. The people are friendly and warm, you really get the sense of "aloha". It is a very quiet place where you can listen to the coqui frogs and see a million stars at night. It's a great spot to get away from all the drama and frustration of life on the mainland. I definitely will return again. The kalapahana cafe down the road has a market where you can get great food, relaxing massage, music and crafts. The Kehena beach has a wonderful, hippie clothing optional culture with a drum circle every sunday afternoon. Come by but leave your mainland attitude behind :)
      Until next time.

very happy we chose this cottage!

Left on 11/24/2012 for a stay in November 2012

My 11 year old and I stayed at Dolphinsong for four nights, and were very happy we chose this cottage! Seneca and Jeff, the hosts, are wonderfully friendly and great sources of local information.

The location is great - close to Kapoho tidepools and other awesome coastal destinations, not too far from Hilo, and close enough to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park to do in a day trip.

A well-stocked kitchen (pots/pans/dishes/fridge, not food!) and a dining table were a wonderful way to save money and feel more settled during our stay - there was no rush to find dinner at a restaurant before they closed. There's a TV and a library of books and Dvds, and there were even band-aids, bog dope, and peroxide in the bathroom! Love it. This cottage has everything you could need! Traveling with children is often stressful and can leave me feeling underprepared, but that was not the case thanks to this well-stocked cottage.

After four nights at Dolphinsong, we were deeply relaxed and sorry to leave! My daughter would say her favorite parts were the hammock and the cats, and my favorite parts were the kitchen, the drinking water, and our wonderful hosts!

      Lovely hideaway!

Left on 10/03/2012 for a stay in September 2012

My wife and I arrived at night, and Jeff and Seneca met us with a flashlight to make sure we got settled okay. We loved the little cottage from first sight! The fresh flowers and complimentary bottle of champagne they left for us to celebrate our honeymoon made it feel so welcoming and personal. It became our "home away from home" for the next few days. I loved the geckos that came to visit and the coquis at night. Stargazing was excellent. Only downside was distance from things, but I think that may just be a feature of the island. Most restaurants etc were at least a 20 minute drive away, so hit the grocery store and be prepared to do some meals at the cottage. 2 burner stove, small fridge, and cooking implements available. Bring your own napkins/paper towels. Bath and beach towels as well as snorkel gear are there for you to use. Ants invaded the toilet paper in the bathroom, I have no idea why they were so attracted to that, but we just stuck a roll in a big ziploc bag to keep them out and it was not an issue after that. One other downside was that we never could pick up the wi-fi signal, and there is no cell phone service there. This didn't bother us at all because it just added to the feeling of escape from the rest of the world, but it could be an issue for others. We checked out two days earlier than we had planned, which was a bittersweet decision- we hated to leave Dolphinsong but wanted to spend a couple days over on the Kona side of the Island. I compare the cottage to a large camper inside- comfy but rustic. It may not be for everyone, but we truly loved it.

My husband and I stayed at Dolphinsong cottage for three nights. At first we were hesitant to stay there because it's not your typical condo with all the "amenities." However, after arriving there a bit early, Jeff & Seneca made us feel so at home. They are the nicest, friendliest hosts we've ever met in all out travels. And, we've traveled all over the world. The cottage is small but more than adequate for two people. There is a stove for cooking and all the kitchen stuff one would need, but we did not cook as we just wanted to relax. The shower outside took a little getting used to for me, but came to love it quickly. The place is very private and very safe - no locks needed! Honestly! We did not have a map and we forgot our Hawaii Revealed book at home, but Jeff was quick to provide us with one, so, we got to the volcanoes park and Pahoa very well. This area has the most beautiful sceneries we've ever seen and it's not crowded with tourists. It's a perfect and relaxing "getaway." We loved PJ (the house dog) and Curly (the house cat). We can't say enough good things about this cottage and our hosts. The cottage was great and our hosts simply the best!

I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed my stay at a cabin at Doldhin Song. Seneca and Jeff are very freindly and helpful. The cabins are well designed, clean, pleasant and have a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere, with lots of windows and beautiful stained glass art work. The bed is super comfortable. The gardens are beautiful and the setting is serene and peaceful.

It was wonderful to be able to walk a few minutes and be at Kehena Beach. Likewise, it is a short drive to many other wonderful locations. This is a really nice part of the island, with beautiful vistas and perfect weather, not to mention only about half as much rain as Hilo. If you are looking to relax on a beautiful beach, or go snorkeling in tidepools, or even take a hike out to see the lava, this is a perfect place to stay. The town of Pahoa, with several nice restaurants, is an easy 20 minute drive. Also, there is a popular evening market just a few mintues drive away, on Wednesdays and weekends, that has food, craft vendors and live, local music. I stayed in several guest houses during my vacation, and Dophin Song was far and away the best!

Charming cottage rental by the ocean

Left on 05/20/2012 for a stay in May 2012

My spouse and I enjoyed our time at Dolphin Song. Our hosts, Jeff and Seneca, were friendly, approachable, and unintrusive. Their house is set towards the back of the property, out of sight, while the cottage is located near the front. Dolphin Song is a cozy cottage with an indoor bathroom but outdoor shower (there's hot water, don't worry!). The kitchen is small but very usable, so if you like being able to eat in at least some of the time, it's a great arrangement. We used the cottage as a base to explore the island and often came back in the afternoons to nap and read. It was a relaxing and low-key way to spend time on the Big Island. At night, the symphony of coqui frogs, insects, rain, and birdsong comes clearly through the windows (some of which are only screened). The many windows and airiness of the cottage made us feel like we were living closer to nature.

My favorite part was probably our bonus rental cat. Curly, Jeff and Seneca's super friendly tabby, likes to visit the cottage when there are cat-friendly people in residence. Since I always miss my cat when I'm away from home, her company made it feel like home away from home. If we make it back to the Big Island, we'd be happy to stay here again.

      Charming, rustic, relaxing

Left on 04/28/2012 for a stay in August 2011

My partner and I stayed here for four days and had our itinerary allowed we would have happily extended to a week. We based ourselves here to explore the lava flows and Volcano National Park, a 45 minute drive up the road. There was plenty around to keep us entertained, on this sleepier side of Big Island. It's back from the coastal road, so no traffic noise, in a quiet residential village. The cottage is rustic (saggy and squeaky floorboards add to the charm) and gives you the sense of being outdoors - often because you are, in effect, with only insect mesh for windows and an outdoor shower. The bathroom didn't have a full door, so you could hear the intimacies of your partner, but that's a minor quibble. The frogs were in full throat in the evening, so if you watch a DVD you'll need to crank the volume right up in order to hear it. Despite them being so loud, I never needed to bother with earplugs. Jeff and Seneca were wonderfully friendly hosts who were helpful without being intrusive, and kindly lent us snorkelling gear for some enjoyable afternoons down the coast. Can't agree with previous posters who claim the takeaway joint at the end of the road is good - found it cheap and greasy. A fully equipped kitchen meant we could save some money by eating in, which we did a lot, though this requires planning as the nearest store is a good drive away.

Dolphinsong is a peaceful cozy cabin with all one could ever want for a comfortable stay. You couldn't ask for better hosts than Jeff & Seneca--their warm welcome is matched with their suggestions about what to do and where to see amazing places in their special part of the island. The coqui chant at night and the birds provide the wonderful natural sounds through the day. Lovely gardens, delightful stained glass creations by Seneca, books, music are added touches that add to the warmth of the place. You are within a minute of fantastic lava rock shores, spectacular views, a great eatery at the "End of the Road'. It's a short drive to ahalunui natural swimming pool and great tidal pools. It's also a great base to have while exploring the everchanging Volcano area. This year was our second time staying there and it's on our list for a return visit for sure!

      We were charmed

Left on 03/23/2012 for a stay in December 2011

This is a small cottage which we wanted. It's nestled in a lovely garden of scented flowers. I loved that we had no windows and just screens, so we had fresh air flowing into our room all the time.
The cooking facilities were good and we could make most meals. We left behind a rice cooker to add to the collection of utensils.

Our hosts Jeff and Seneca and Jeff were warm and attentive. Check out Seneca's glass windows and stained glass. She sold us a few pieces before we left.

When we return to the Big Island we will be staying here.

Left on 02/27/2012 for a stay in January 2012

We stayed three nights in Banyan Nook, which is DolphinSong's little sister. The pictures and description that our hosts sent us gave us a clear idea of what to expect: a clean, well-kept, compact, attractive, open-air cabin with a kitchenette-type cooking area, with a pleasant outdoor hot-water shower. The bed was very comfortable. Very eco-friendly. Great location for visiting Pahoa and the east side of the Big Island.

Imagine going back in time to the sixty's, when everyone wanted peace, love and freedom. Getting back to the land and living from organic fruits & vegetables. With two close farmers markets, off the red road; you got exactly that feel along with the 5 minute walk to the beach daily.

We drove all around the island and just hurried back to the best part, our little cottage in the midst of paradise. I hate to tell anyone about it, for fear it will not be available when others discover the serenity of it all.
I can only pray that we are able to go back some day soon.

Thanks for sharing your piece of heaven on earth. Sincerely appreciate meeting you both for our 1st Hawain experience.

      A peaceful paradise!

Left on 01/15/2012 for a stay in January 2012

We thoroughly enjoyed our week at Dolphinsong. The pictures on the site are all accurate so I won't add more. The cottage is like a stand-alone screened porch (with a small bathroom tacked on) and fits perfectly into its environment. We appreciated Jeff and Seneca's version of hospitality - they were very friendly and helpful if we had questions or just wanted to chat but otherwise they respected our privacy and were not ever intrusive.

To me, Dolphinsong was like a luxurious camping experience. A nice bed, electricity, WiFi, fridge, a 2-burner gas stove - but no cell service, TV reception or microwave. Some "real" windows but some just screened. Enough windows had coverings to afford privacy. The tap water is not drinkable but unlimited purified water is provided. If you are looking for a hotel experience, night life, shopping, then you wouldn't like it here.

We enjoyed the country atmosphere, the quiet (except for the night time coqui serenade), the beautiful landscaping - fragrant belladonna, hibiscus and jasmine. I loved the special touches that show our hosts' thoughtfulness - like the flashlight, the small sewing kit and selection of Dvd's provided. The cottage also came with snorkel equipment, a cooler, umbrellas (that we did not need since it only rained overnight) and plenty of towels.

We travelled widely - from Volcano National Park to Waipi'o Valley; we enjoyed the gardens and waterfalls of Hilo. Closer to home were the Kapoho Tide Pools (15-20 minutes drive) and Kehena Beach (walking distance).

If you have any concerns or questions about whether this rental is right for you, don't hesitate to email Jeff and Seneca. They want their tenants to enjoy themselves and they will answer you honestly about what to expect! It was perfect for us and we hope to return in the future!

Live the dream in this home from home paradise cottage

Left on 01/04/2012 for a stay in December 2011

For those in need a quick review, two words - stay here!! We have just spent two weeks here on our honeymoon and it's been simply magic. The cottage is clean, with all necessary amenities and beautiful hand made decorations and a lush private garden that was relaxing to sit in daytimes and exhilarating whilst stargazing at night. With the best Big Island guidebooks, bird spotting books, fruit posters and snorkelling gear Seneca and Jeff have gone to every length to equip you with information to have the best stay. Their attention to detail and care is amazing as we experienced on arriving with a bottle of champagne and a card congratulating us on our honeymoon! They are also a phone call away and always helpful with good local knowledge and suggestions. Our favourite part was lovely outside hot shower, feels amazing! DolphinSong is in a quiet setting where you can feel nature all around you. Seneca and Jeff are two very special people. As hosts, they are barely visible and always reachable with any needs or queries. We made great friends with them and their pets.
The location is a 5 minute walk to Kehena beach and a 10 min drive to warm pools, snorkelling tidal pools or beach for surfing/lounging. The Kalapana village cafe is a 5 min drive away with a wonderful crafts market, great food and live hawaiian & folk music & great people. Pahoa is 15min drive and is the local small town, full of character and with a fantastic farmers market on a Sunday with lots of good fruit and veg. The lush coastal jungle roads are full of life and this south Eastern corner of Hawaii has it`s own unique character. It`s also a good place to base if you want explore the rest of the island. We went all over the island.
You can spend $1000`s to stay in a hotel resort with no personality or you can stay in the real Hawaii, with genuine people with local knowledge for a great price. As we say in London, it`s a no brainer! Go and enjoy!

      Magical, Enchanting, Unforgettable!

Left on 12/15/2011 for a stay in December 2011

I was a little worried about arriving so late and in the dark. But when we arrived I was instantly captivated. The tree frogs were singing (no need for a noisemaker to lure you to sleep here!), there was an alluring grassy pathway lit with solar lights leading up to this irresistibly cute hobbit house. Soft lights and quiet music enticed us in through a most unique screen door. I was in love! The bed was about the coziest and most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. In spite of being mostly screened (which was why I wanted to stay here) there was total privacy. For a casual vacationer who wants a unique experience that will linger in their memory, Dolphinsong is a great pick. Seneca & Jeff are fantastic hosts and this part of the island is so beautiful and a great place to explore.

We stayed here the first week of June 2011 and found the place to be just perfect for the two of us. Jeff and Seneca were wonderful. Their description of the place is 100%accurate. The cottage was clean, comfortable, and fully equiped. Plenty of hot water (outside private shower)and lovely garden, flowers, and tropical sounds at night. The Big Island is b-i-g, and no place can be centrally located to everything, but this place came as close as you could want. 5 minute walk to Kenena Beach. 9 minute drive to thermal ponds to soak in, 2 more minute drive to wonderful tidal pools to snorkle in. (Cottage comes with snorkle gear.) Easy drive to volcano. With the cottage as home base, we had something different to do every day. Yes, the cottage is cozy, but at this price it is the best value in Hawaii. Shop at the farmers marker in Pahoa, cook your food at the cottage and you can eat well for $10 a day. (Papayas were 15 cents each!) Economical, private, beautiful, comfortable, romantic... we can't say enough good things.

The perfect place in a perfectly true and non touristy location on "Big Island".
This was an amazing experience with a different tone of Life: very nice people all around this area, no need for a car since anyone will just give you a lift to distant places (Pahoa/Kalapana/Red Road), proximity to grand Kilauea (volcano), Pahoa village, etc ...
But mainly : "Kehena" the black sand beach (a true gem), the most beautiful pristine beach we have ever seen ... within 5mn walk.

What a wonderful place to call home on the Big Island! The coastal area southeast of Pahoa town is truly magical. The coastal road is a fun drive with great overlooks, tidal pools and steam vents to explore! Dolphinsong was perfect for my 4 night solo vacation on the Big Island. From this basecamp, I explored Volcano National Park, Hilo, Mauna Kea and also drove as far north as Waimea! The bed was comfortable, the outdoor shower was hot on demand and as clean as an outdoor shower can be! The kitchen had everything that I needed for simple meal preparation and the indoor bathroom was perfect. Definitely explore all of the beaches and overlooks along the coastal road, but beware of the rough seas! The Kapoho Tide Pools north of Dolphinsong on the coastal road were the highlight of my stay. Great snorkeling site with calm water and awesome sea life! I also visited the nearby Steam Vent Inn & Health Retreat - really cool steam vents - stay as long as you want for a $15 donation! I definitely recommend Dolphinsong for a solo traveler or couple. Jeff and Seneca were fantastic hosts - when I needed them, they were there - but, otherwise, they were off in their own Big Island paradise! Enjoy!

If you want to stay at a place that is quiet, peaceful, simple, and is away from people, DolphinSong might be the place for you. It is located on the south eastern part of the Big Island Rain Forest close to the delightful town of Pahoa, Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park, and Kehena Black Sand Beach. The food in Pahoa (Ning's Thai food and the Pahoa Fish House) were very good. We slept with the sound of the rain, wind and chirping of the croqui. Life was good.

Seneca greeted us when we got in and it was late. She and Jeff made many nice recommendations to us for things to do and places to visit and eat. We enjoyed Waimea, Volcano and a few other small, quaint towns on the eastern side of the island and of course Kilauea Crater area. Ask Seneca about these.

We enjoyed our privacy. The road out the back was great for running and walking. Mahola.

Left on 01/21/2011 for a stay in December 2010

I loved my stay at Dolphin song and look forward to going back there. The little cottage was ideal for me. It has electricity, mini kitchen with big sink and fridge, bathroom, outdoor shower, a comfy arm chair and a small tv to watch dvds on.
The place was clean and comfy. I stayed for two weeks and lived fairly independently cooking my meals on the stoves, staying or going out whenever I wanted and being as lazy or active as I wanted. I'm not a big fan of luxury hotels, with hoards of tourists, cleaners going into your personal space and you have to pay for every little thing. I like taking care of myself, being able to cook for myself and setting my own schedule, whether I choose to follow it or not. Dolphinsong was an ideal place for my kind of holiday.

The hosts Seneca and Jeff are lovely and welcoming but they also respect your privacy and space. Their directions are clear and precise and they provide you with everything you need. They struck the balance of being welcoming yet unobtrusive perfectly and when I locked the keys of my rental car in the boot on the last day (typical!) their help was kindly offered and invaluable. I enjoyed very much talking to them and felt perfectly safe in their cottage.

The neighbourhood is small and friendly, everyone says aloha and seem to know each other. The surroundings are beautiful. Walking around and down to Kehena beach or down the red road is breathtaking. On Sundays there's a big community get-together on Kehena beach with lots of drumming, dancing and laughing. It's a nice tradition.

The cottage is nicely situated so that you can easily drive to Pahoa, to Volcano Park, Hilo, Kapoho tide pools (vacation land) and Kalapana. You definitely need a car for the big island and during the high season you should book this in advance. If you want to see the Green sand beach or drive to south point you need a 4x4 or you just will not make it there. That being said there are free buses on the big island and hitch-hiking is the most common means of transport.

People on the Big Island are friendly, polite and helpful. I had the good fortune of making lots of new friends just simply by having a coffee in a cafe, picking up a hitch-hiker or just sitting on a beach with a book. There is a bit of petty crime, when you're not looking your flip-flops may be stolen or worst case scenario your car, but if you take a few precautions (not brain-science, just don't leave anything visible in your car) and maybe carry extra sandals in your bag that need not spoil your holiday. Apart from that the big island is pretty safe. I travelled it alone and as a solo female traveller I never felt uneasy or scared.

I hope to come back to the big island soon as I spent three weeks on it, one week on the West side and two weeks in Dolphin song on the East side and I have yet to see everything...next time I come I do plan to return to Dolphin song. This time with a 4x4!

      What a wonderful place!

Hosts: Jeff and Seneca are lovely people who are eager to share their knowledge and experiences with guests. They even offer some local tours (not free, but comparatively cheap!), and make you feel right at home.

Cottage: Perfect size. It's not a palace, and it doesn't need to be. Comfortably fit us (a couple) and all our stuff. The open breeze is great. Ocean crashing can be heard at night. A wonderful selection of books is provided. A large collection of DVD movies is available, too. The two burner gas stove is excellent, as were the cooking and eating utensils provided (cast iron! french press! teapots!). The outdoor shower is a fantastic experience. Geckos were our friendly visitors at night, cute and hungry for bugs! Bed is comfy, pillows fluffy. Overall, excellent accommodations, especially considering the price!! Very clean and quaint.

Area: The best area on the Big Island. We took a trip over to Kailua-Kona for one night and found ourselves only wanting to be back in Puna at the cottage. There is a beautiful black sand beach a short walk away, and gorgeous sea cliffs right across the street. The locals at the Kava bar at the end of the street were incredibly friendly and chatty, and the area is quiet, a respite from the tourist-invaded areas of Kailua. The red road stretches along the coast and is full of canopy tunnels, old lava flows, beach views, and good jogging/biking. Nearby Pahoa has some tasty food (especially Mexican @ Luquin's!) In the sun belt area of Puna, we saw not one cloudy day, and had wonderful little rain spouts at night.

Overall: Hard to imagine this gem is offered for such an amazingly reasonable price. If you aren't the resort type, this is the place for you! If you're looking for quiet, sunny mornings and good access to Volcanoes/Lava/Beach/Hilo, I would highly recommend this place. We'll be staying here any time we return to Hawai'i!

If you would like to know what it might be like to live in this area of Hawaii, then this could be the place for you.

It was very easy to meet and converse with the local residents by going to the weekend farmers markets, stopping at the fruit stands at the side of the road, swimming at the warm ponds and tidal pools or consuming fish in Pahoa. We also had a local guide take us to within 10 feet of moving, hot lava. Wow! And we also saw dolphins.

Dolphinsong is in a quiet rural setting where you can actually just relax on your vacation! Though not large, it is very comfortable and is stocked with everything we needed but food. Seneca and Jeff, our hosts, were accommodating when we needed them to be and are good neighbors.

      Beautiful Experience

Left on 06/02/2010 for a stay in May 2010

We arrived after dark to this beautiful cottage and were blown away by how adorable it was! No problem finding the place, because Seneca gave us good directions. Very clean and equiped with linens and kitchen stuff. My only regret is that I could not stay longer. The next time I go to The Big Island, I'm staying in Dolphin Song again!

      Quaint oasis!

My husband and I loved our stay at Dolphin Song! The cottage was a perfect little nook in the middle of paradise. It was an excellent combination of necessities like fridge and stove, plumbing etc... and natural beauty. Seneca and Jeff's garden created privacy and was gorgeous. The intoxicating smell of the night blooming jasmine and belladonna flowers were always an amazing end to our days.
The hosts were respectful of our privacy but were readily available to help us out whenever we asked. We would return at a moments notice and do it all again!

The title sums it up. Basic, charming, rustic with all necessary amenities. The hosts are warm and helpful. They give the place a local perspective without being overbearing.

      Great Getaway Bungalow!

Left on 05/12/2010 for a stay in May 2010

Best deal in the Puna Region. Comfortable open-air accommodations with
everything you need for a comfortable nights stay. Cook your own meals and
relax in the front yard. Great location for exploring the volcanos and coastal
attractions. We traveled easily to see the lava flows, Kilauea, and both Mauna
Loa and Mauna Kea. Kapoho tide pools just down the road. We miss the frogs
that sang us to sleep each night. Seneca and Jeff are great hosts. Friendly and
      unintrusive. Highly recommended.

Just what we were looking for! :)

I have to say that this is a gem. We wanted to find a nice place to stay that was close to everything on the volcano side and we're glad we stayed here. It was right across from the black sand beach, close to tide pools, lava tree state park, and best of all, the flowing lava. Probably the closest you'll stay to the lava flowing into the ocean. Its not the hilton - but you have to make some sacrifices if you want to be close to the action. Definitely recommended! Jeff and Seneca were great! :) Have fun..
