Description from the manager
If you want the feeling of being on a ship without the movement, this is the place to be! Located in Hawaiian Beaches (about 20 miles south of Hilo), Hale Ehu Kai is a 2-bedroom, 2-bath
handicap accessible and wheelchair accessible vacation rental house on the Big Island of Hawaii in an area with magical views and other beautiful homes.
Relax in the hot tub on the lanai and see whales and spinner dolphins (in season). The lanai is extra wide for outdoor dining, and a lava barbecue is right out in front. The name Hale Ehu Kai (Sea Spray) is very appropriate for this home as you watch
the waves splash against the rock cliffs.

Ehu Hale Kai was our perfect home base for three days while exploring the Hilo side of the Big Island. The parts we liked best were: the well-stocked and -equipped kitchen; the ideal location in a peaceful residential neighborhood away from traffic and crowds yet only a short drive to Hilo, tide pools and beaches and Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park; the completely unobstructed and expansive view of the ocean; the ever present sound of the breaking waves and the nightly chorus of frogs. The owners and the rental staff were very professional and thorough in preparing us and the home for our stay.

Amazing location just yards from the pounding surf. Cozy house cooled by constant on-shore breezes, very well furnished and the hot tub overlooking the sea was an added bonus. Especially appreciate frig and cupboards stocked with condiments and bathrooms with shampoo, etc. East side of Big Island is known for rain, so just go with it. Sun comes out sooner or later.

A charming, well-appointed, Spotlessly Clean, beach house. We loved seeing turtles surf and whales breach from the balcony every day! Great location close to Volcanoes Ntl Park, Kapoho Tide Pools, warm pools, Lava Tree State Park, etc. Groceries, shops and restaurants nearby. A great kitchen with lots of cookware, comfortable loungers and beds. We will miss hearing the ocean waves and coqui frogs each nt. Thanks to the owners for a great local driving guide. Don't miss having lunch at the small Village Cafe at the "end of the road". Delicious grilled fish and mac-nut pie. None of us wanted to leave-we will definitely stay here longer next visit!!!

Our stay at Hale Ehu Kai was fantastic! The cleanliness of the house was so much appreciated. The sound of the ocean waves lulling us to sleep every night was heaven. We explored the island by day and each day on the way back to the property, we stopped at the local stands and bought fresh fruit, then stopped at the market to buy steaks and such. We would go back to Hale Ehu Kai and cook on the grill. So much fun! We will definitely recommend this property to fellow travelers. Thanks for a wonderful time.

This was the perfect house for our trip! Beautiful surroundings, very calming to be so close to the ocean. The whales were apparently there every day according to the neighbors, but we weren't on the same time schedules, as I only saw them one time! I could have spent my entire trip at this house. Definitely will stay there again!

We stayed for 4 nights in Hale Ehu Kai and it was a wonderful experience. The house is immaculate and has all of the necessities needed for a wonderful vacation. The location is right on the ocean... the beds are comfortable, the towels are plush, nice modern kitchen.. could use a new BBQ grill, had DVD library and extra movie channels. Furnished very nice. Would definitely call it an upscale home. And will definitely return with friends.

Had a great time. I would only suggest to follow directions and not use GPS to get there. I know people complained about the hot tub being to cold. To take care of that find the directions and it heats up in just about 1-2 hours. A great place to stay and lots of privacy. Thanks so much

We were given great instructions on how to get there and were very pleased with the cleanliness, the furnishings and most of all the location. It was nice to have some coffee, food, and plenty of toilet paper to start our two weeks off. We read everything we could get our hands on and enjoyed the tide pools and especiall the Hot Pond. We toured Hilo and vicinity, enjoyed the volcano, and spent a lot of time on the Lanai. We loved walking through the neighborhood in the morning, admiring the houses and the flowers and tropical fauna. The weather was great, cloudy, but warm and very little rain. For our 50th anniversary it was wonderful.

Sykesville, MDBeautiful Location!
Left on 09/26/2011 for a stay in September 2011
As expected, Hale Ehu Kai was beautifully situated by the ocean. Of all the vacation houses we have stayed at over the years (in the U.S. and abroad), Hale Ehu Kai has the best ocean side location. It sits on a small black lava cliff, overlooking a rocky "beach". It would not be safe to swim here, although the surf is both very near and very spectacular. We truly enjoyed watching the turtles in the surf every day while eating breakfast and dinner on the deck.
The one minor nit that we had concerned the quality of the furnishings and fittings. In vacation houses like this one, we are used to seeing at least a mid-grade finish. We don't need luxury, but we do appreciate authenticity. Although the house is certainly serviceable, the imitation wood deck, imitation wood floors, and thick foam pads (think Home Depot and on sale) that have inexplicably been placed on all the mattresses are hard to understand... We realize that getting a real wood deck and real wood floors would be a major expense. But, even just removing the odd and uncomfortable foam pads from the mattresses would be a big step in the right direction.
Overall, however, these nits having to do with the quality are out weighed by the house's spectacular location. We recommend this house without reservation to anybody looking for a quiet getaway with a spectacular view of the ocean. It would be even better if the deck and floors were real wood and the beds didn't have the crazy foam pads (these are not fastened down, the temporary fix is left as an exercise for the reader)... -

Left on 08/17/2011 for a stay in July 2011
We have spent there one week and it was definitely too short to visit Hawaii island. The house has an outstanding view and very nice owner (come to fix leaking wather). Interior is spacious, in a good condition and very well equipped (microwave, fridge,
washing machine for dishes and closes, dryer etc.). There are some issues like everywhere: - Jacuzzi was much worse than on the picture (old, dark green) and heating didn’t work - Some equipment was out of order (the house requires repairs) - The house exterior
is rusty (because of the ocean proximity) - Cleaning is acceptable but could be better - Localization is away from any shops so you have to drive min. 15 minutes to buy anything Overall it is good but I’m not sure if worth the price ($1300/week). -

The picture I saw on the website did not appear to be current. House was clean, loved the view. reservation folks were great. locks on sliding glass doors rusted out and doors were "secured' with a piece of PVC piping. I thought that was somewhat below my expectations for the price of the unit. and I would get rid of the "fur" pillow on bed in 2nd bedroom as the cleanliness of such of item would at best be slim. we were happy to be there, and the view and proximity to the ocean made up for anything that wasn't excellent. thanks.

Waking up and realizing you are sitting on the edge of nothing but ocean makes for a very dramatic and stunning way to start the day. The house and location is ideal for anyone just wanting to chill out away from it all even if the kid is with you as there is plenty of room. But if you do venture out, we discovered a bunch of really cool things to see and do in the immediate area thanks to the handwritten notes found in the cottage which was an appreciated touch. BTW, the main bathroom has a fantastic shower - better than most hotels and certainly better than most other houses. In fact, the house is generally outfitted better and is more cozy than any other we have stayed in. We highly recommend Hale Ehu Kai to anyone considering a stay in Puna.

Susan, the property manager, was always available to help us out, talking us to our rental in the dark, when hibiscuses had obscured the street number.
The house was spotless, with up-to-date decor and a charming Hawaiian feel. The bed was comfortable, and the kitchen had everything a cook could ever need.
Of course, the surf crashing on the lava shore beyond the lanai was magical and comforting. -

Left on 01/15/2011 for a stay in January 2011
Pictures are accurate except for hot tub which is smaller and older. Hot tub didn't heat up so we didn't use it. Other than that, this place was perfect for two couples. The highlight of the two weeks we stayed here was morning walks along the street next to the house that ends at a beautiful park right on the ocean. I saw a whale spout one morning and frequently saw sea turtles in the waves right in front of the house. Lava rock all around the house to water. No access to water all rock cliff. The lots on each side of house are not developed so you have lots of privacy. No noises from nearby homes. Waves at night can get loud but great if you like that sound. You will need a car. This house is not close to any towns. It takes about 20 minutes to get to the nearest town for supplies. Hilo is 30 minutes away and has some nice beaches. Read the guest book there were lots of ideas of things to do. I brought my laptop and plugged into the provided Ethernet cord for fast web access. Know that this side of the island gets more rain than the Kona side but we had plenty of sunny days with short rain showers thrown in. We had wonderful dinners on the huge porch overlooking the ocean. Highly recommend this place and would love to return.

Left on 10/11/2010 for a stay in October 2010
Brenda and I stayed in this relaxing setting for a week with another couple. If you are looking for a place pretty much out of the way from the busy city or even town life this is the place to go. We were more on the go so found the long drives tiring by the end of the day. We found the few neighbors we saw very warm and friendly. We loved the warm springs down the road. Also the occassional turtle popping his head up above the surf kept us on the lookout. The home had most of the kitchen accessories necessary for a comfortable stay although the blender had a crack in the base and leaked every time you put liquid in it. We found the beds quite comfortable. If it wasn't for the gorgeous sunrises most mornings I would have been in bed much longer. The overall stay was very relaxing. Until we stayed in this home so very close to the ocean we never understood how damp and how corrosive the air could be. The floors in the morning were always damp to the barefoot. When we arrived the towels all had a musty smell to them probably from the damp air as did the washing mashine when we tried to wash the ordor out. Eventually we got everything smelling fresh. Also the TV Dish remote did not work properly. It was very difficult to get from station to station. Probably due to corrosion on the terminals. Someone might want to update the picture of the hot tub on this website and also on the calling cards which all show it as round. The square tub surprised us a bit. The jets on this hot tub were wimps compared others we have been in. I probably would have rated 5 on everything above had it not been for these few inconveniences. A few fixes and this could easily have been a 5 star. All in all we had very relaxing time on this our first stay on the Hilo side of the Big Island. Thanks so much for sharing this home with us.

My family really enjoyed Hale Ehu Kai. We loved it so much that we extended our stay a couple of days. It was great waking up to the crashing waves and sea turtles. Our only issues were that the hot tub was not the one pictured, the actual hot tub is pretty barely fits 2 comfortably. The other thing is that the screen doors are very rusted and the guest bedroom door fell on my 4 yr, old twice. No serious injury, but it was a bit scary. If it fell on a toddler or baby, it could hurt them. Also, it gets extremely windy here, so if you don't like the wind, this may not be the house for you. All in all it was a wonderful place to stay. The booking staff were extremely helpful and very nice to deal with. I would recommend this house to others and may return next year for another stay. I would definately recommend Big Island Vacation Rentals as your source to finding the perfect house for your Hawaiian get away.

Very relaxing location which is the reason we chose Hale Ehu Kai--just wanted to stay put. House could use a good scrub and replacement of "tired" bed linens & blinds. LR furniture not very comfortable. Need additional chaise for lanai. Some concern re seriously rusting Simpson 4x4 support brackets! Maybe replace the"pipe" locks on the sliders with more substanstial locks. Apppreciated that the kitchen was well-stocked (lots of duplicates)- maybe should tell future renters to check supplies before they shop.

Left on 10/15/2009 for a stay in September 2009
My wife and I had a great time at this home. One of the best parts was actually the notebook of suggestions of things to do left there by the owners. We had a great time snorkeling at the tidepools nearby. The little town of Pahoa was also a real treat, with some reasonably priced restaurants - one of our meals was a delicious spaghetti dinner for only $6/person (Boogie Woogie Pizza). We also had a good Thai meal at Ning's Thai Cuisine.
We heard stories of the rain, but for the four days we were there, I think it only rained once during the day for a short time in the morning. -

Kitchen great, although knives need an upgrade and we had to rearrange the pantry to find a place to store our food. Open Light and airy. Bedrooms could use a new carpet or shift to the wood and the Bed linens need replacing. (maybe thats next..) We were there right before a storm so it was pretty wild with the waves on the rocks. Incredible views of the color in the ocean. good place to start excursions from. The Hot Tub water was a bit murky for our taste (We didn't go in it for that reason)and would have requested new water if we had been there 5 or more days. My son used it though! Very accomadating for our early check in, though they made no promises as it had been occupied the previous day. they still were able to have it ready for us! Yay! -

Our family of five loved our stay at Hale Ehu Kai on the Big Island. The house is really right on an ocean cliff so the views of the beautiful ocean waves were unobstructed. It was great to see the turtles playing in the ocean right out front. We were surprised by the number of amenities at the house from kitchen supplies to snorkeling equipment. The house is a bit of a drive to Hilo and the volcano (40 minutes) but we knew this and to stay on the ocean this was necessary. Parts of the house are rusting from the ocean spray but owners are aware of this and this didn't affect our overall stay. Overall a beautiful location with great amenities. Thanks!

Truly enjoyed our stay. Sunshine abundant in Pahoa even when skies were gray in Hilo. Property located in quiet neighborhood community. Spectacular ocean view visible from most rooms in the house and fresh ocean breezes off the lanai. Beautifully appointed and lovely decor. Only complaints were a cold shower one morning (solar powered, perhaps?) and roaches in the microwave oven light. I realize bugs are prevalent and customary due to the tropical climate but please ask housekeeping to check & clean this part of the microwave in future. Thank you for a wonderful three days. If you want to experience being up close and personal with the ocean this place is for you. During our short stay we heard and felt the waves crashing against the rocky shore all day and all night which is truely a unique experience. Perhaps on calmer days the ocean is more soothing. The location is quiet, except for the ocean, and is just a short drive from Hilo. It is excellent for travel to the Volcano National Park and the active lava flow viewing site at the end of highway 130. The management is very accomodating should any problems arise and I have no hesitation recommending Hale Ehu Kai. Thank you for a wonderful experience that we will cherish.

It would be much more comfortable if the house had an air conditioner and heater to remove the dampness and warm the house during the winter months. The temperature remained mostly in the upper 60's and it rained every day that we were there. Even a window unit in each bedroom would be helpful. The house was cold and damp the entire nine days we were there. One of us ended up getting sick as a result of the cold and dampness. We would not recommend the Hilo side of the island. Kona is much nicer.

The house was wonderful, well taken care of, spectacular view right on the ocean. The owners have done a fantastic job of creating a lovely vacation home. The down side for us was the weather and somewhat the location. Wild wind and rain a good portion of the time. The immediate surrounding neighborhood was nice, but it felt like one didn't have to go far to get to some pretty run-down sketchy areas with some fairly sketchy characters. If one was looking for total privacy and relaxing time with no regard for weather, then this place is ideal. The hot tub on the deck was great, a huge plus. My favorite thing that we did in the area was to go to the Kapoho tide pools and snorkel. WOW! That was the best snorkeling I've ever experienced...unbelievable coral and beautiful fish! Also it was great to have Volcano NP so close. We had a great day there and it didn't rain!

Aloha,
If one enjoys the sounds of the ocean, waves crashing against rocks, this is the place for you!! The sound is just heavenly to my ears. I recorded the sound on my recorder, so that I can listen to it here in the middle of our high desert. The sound just lulled me to sleep each and every night.
The house is very clean, decorated nicely and very well equipped with all our needs met. I was able to cook our Christmas dinner, including a small turkey without any trouble. The owners have thought about making it easy to live here for a while, rather than only thinking of it as a short time place to stay. It is also very nice that there are new and up to date DVDS to watch. Other places that we have stayed only have one or two paperbacks and that is about it. These folks have it set up as a place to call home for your stay. The other nice thing was that there was internet, included. My daughter was able to work on a class while she was there, which was very good.
We have stayed at this house twice now and it is the best house. It is also very nice that the house is so very H/C friendly. Using one of the plastic chairs from the lanai, my husband was able to easily use the shower.
Whenever, we are on the Hilo side of the island, I hope that this house is available. It is the best. It sure makes you want to tear up your return tickets and stay forever.
I found the neighbors to be very friendly and helpful, too. The location of the house is not that far from grocery shopping either.
At Christmas time, the little Christmas tree is nice. What a treat, after a long trip from the mainland to be welcomed into a beautiful little house with lights on, a fresh loaf of banana bread, a bowl of fresh fruit, and beautiful flowers. It sure made us feel welcome!!
Happy New Year to All!!

This house was gorgeous! And very private. The view was spectacular and you couldn't beat all of the amenities that were available.

This vacation rental was exactly as described. It had all the amentities of home and couldn't have been closer to the ocean. We fell asleep each night to the sound of the waves. The owners had thought of everything and provided it, even down to flash lights essential for lava night viewing. Sharene & Sue at Hawaii Vacation Rentals where extremely helpful and made the reservation process easy to conduct via Email. We hope to return again to this property.

Home was beautiful. very relaxing and very well stocked. Location a bit questionable. We would stay again, maybe in the winter to hang out and watch whales.
