Phoenix, AZA Taste of Paradise
Left on 05/15/2013 for a stay in April 2013
If your ideal Hawaiian vacation includes miles of beaches, endless activities, an abundance of restaurants, this rental would not appeal to you. However, if you would enjoy an isolated retreat in a tropical rain forest, the sounds of frogs and crickets at night instead of television and ice machines, and you don’t mind making your own meals, hauling and/or composting your trash and being respectfully conservative with use of water and electricity, then keep reading. We spent a week at Chad and Sue’s rental in april 2013. We truly felt that we had been transported to another world, one that we were sad to leave.
We flew into Kona, rented a car and drove to our rental house, stopping in Hilo for groceries and arriving late at night. Two women travelling alone, we felt slightly uneasy driving into the dark rain forest at night, dead tired and not sure what to expect. After a good night sleep, we woke to discover that we had found our way into a tropical paradise.
The house and grounds were impressively clean and manicured. Everything we needed was there, even an ice chest with ice packs in the freezer. We appreciated the binder containing detailed instructions, local information, suggestions for site-seeing, etc. Chad and Sue made a point to meet us on the first morning and were available to answer questions throughout the week. The only issue we had during our stay was dealing with the lack of signage; we learned to drive slowly and read maps carefully, since most of the places we visited were unmarked.
Here is how we spent the week:
Day 1, Get acquainted with the area. Walk across the road to the ocean front. South on 137 to black sand beach (clothing optional), end of road vendors, restaurant and new black sand beach (walk from parking lot across lava field.)
Day 2, north on 137 to mango forest, then west to Pahoa, lunch at Ning’s Thai, then east on 132 to lava tree forest, late afternoon dip in ahalanui warm pond.
Day 3, Hilo. Hawaii Live show at Palace Theatre, Tsunami Museum, farmer’s market for great local produce.
Day 4, Volcanoes National Park, a must see.
Day 5, Hilo. Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens (highly recommended), Lymon Museum, night lava viewing (south end of 130).
Day 6, new black sand beach, Kapoho tide pools (north of warm pond on 137).
Day 7, painted church (hwy 130), then to Kona. Lunch, walk, shop on the waterfront, Mokuaikaua Church
There was no shortage of things to do in the area where we stayed, but there was a noticeable absence of tourists. We were busy for the entire week, saw every attraction on our list. It was a fabulous trip, one that we will never forget and will highly recommend to other like-minded travelers. -

Chelsea, MIWonderful big island vacation home off the beaten path
Left on 05/06/2013 for a stay in March 2013
This was a wonderful place to stay on the east side of the island. The home is spacious and comfortable, the property beautifully landscaped. Chad and Sue live nearby on the property and were wonderful hosts. We stayed a week, and spent most of our time out and about seeing the sites all over the island, which was a shame we didn't have more time to just relax and enjoy the home and property. There are many beautiful views close by as well. The property is definitely off the beaten path so to speak, down a wonderfully twisty ocean side road, Kapoho Kalapana road which most probably miss, but no one should in my opinion. This is a remote location with lots of nature, lots of mongoose, birds, geckos, etc! Wonderful views from the black volcanic cliffs, black sand beaches nearby, volcanic heated tidal pools, etc.
The washer/dryer and clothes lines came in handy, as did the cooler for our trips out. Full kitchen and a BBQ grill also, though we didn't have time to cook for ourselves this trip. :)
Also, Boogie Woogie Pizza in Pahoa is not to be missed, as well as the Thai restaurant in Volcano, outstanding! -

Left on 12/02/2012 for a stay in November 2012
This rental was absolutely perfect for our stay in the Puna district. It is secluded yet close to all the "good stuff" and is family friendly. The house is well maintained and the yard is amazing.Chad and Sue live close by and are very easy going and helpful, I wish we could have spent more time getting to know them. This area is not very touristy but that makes it all the better in our opinion. The coast line, a short walk from the house is very rugged and beautiful. Don't miss the nearby swing where you can sit and be mesmerized by the relentless wave action exploding against the cliffs. I hope we can someday return to this rental.

This is a great condo/sfh! Very well kept and on beautiful grounds. Prepare to feel what it's like to live in the Hawaii of long ago! While it's a secluded location, it's not that far from Hilo, a great place to shop and take in the local culture.
Chad and Sue are very freindly people and will make sure your stay is relaxing. We're coming back as soon as we can. -

Left on 10/29/2012 for a stay in October 2012
My brother and I spent 10 nights here in October and loved it.
We had never been to Hawaii or the us before and chose the house based upon the pictures and reviews.
We couldn't have been happier with the choice, the house is wonderful. Quiet, well appointed, spotlessly clean and situated in an amazing tropical garden. There are all sorts of little details in the house that made our stay easier and Chad and Sue have clearly put a lot of thought into making guests feel comfortable and happy.
It served as a good base to see the sights along the red road and Puna coast and is near enough to make day trips to the Volcano National Park or Hilo easy.
Chad and Sue are great hosts and we would definitely stay there again.
I would recommend that you print out and bring Chad and Sue's directions with you as we would have found it very difficult to find if we did not have them. -

Left on 09/23/2012 for a stay in August 2012
My husband and I stayed at Chad and Sue's house for 5 days in august and it was fantastic. This was our first trip to Hawaii (25th anniversary) and it surpassed all of our expectations. The house was a major reason why. It's in an incredible location, secluded and unspoiled, and it has everything you need. Spotlessly clean, spacious, well-equipped kitchen, laundry, and incredibly beautiful gardens.
The only minor thing I would say is that the upstairs mattress was a bit soft and we ended up sleeping in the downstairs bedroom, and we had a little bit of a challenge finding the house (make sure you bring the street address with you!) But other than that you cannot beat this place. I hope someday we can return. Thank you Chad and Sue!

We try to do every thing we can so our guest have a comfortable
stay. We have found that bed firmness is a very personal thing so we upgrade our mattress toppers and try for mid way between a
hard and soft feel. Each bed room is a little different so there is a choice.
We email very complete directions to our guest and recommend that
they make a copy to bring with them. We also recommend that they.use our directions and not rely on GPS. directions. Aloha to all our past
and future guest Chad and Sue. -

Left on 08/18/2012 for a stay in April 2012
We have stayed with Chad and Sue 4 times, twice we stayed for a month each. Every time we had a wonderful experience. Walking and biking along the red road is incredible, finding a new path or trail to the ocean all the time. We loved walking after dinner to the swing by the ocean and watching the waves in the moonlight. The whole area is beautiful.
Chad and Sue are wonderful hosts, they are friendly and very accomodating, providing us with fresh flowers, sometimes fruits from the property when available, and plenty of household supplies. The house is well maintained and clean, the kitchen utensils are very nice.
I love to fall asleep to rhe sound of the swaying palms and ocean breezes. It's so wonderful. Can't wait to go back again. -

Left on 06/11/2012 for a stay in May 2012
This property is by far the loveliest place I have ever stayed. The home is beautiful, well kept, and very tidy. Everything one could need is there~ even cold drinking water in the fridge! Plenty of supplies: towels, linens, dishes, spices, local travel books bug spray ,paper towels. The list goes on and on.
The hosts are kind, gave us an easy check in and out and even shared fruit from their garden upon our arrival.
The real story however is the grounds. The yard is spectacular. No words or photos could possibly describe the awesomeness adequately. Absolutely stunning. The air smells like gardenias. This location is but a few miles from what scientists believe to be some of the cleanest air in the world. And you can tell! I will without question make a return trip to this truly tropical paradise.

Chad and Sue are amazing hosts -- so gracious, hospitable, and nice! This home, on 3 acres of stunning tropical forest beauty, is remarkable! We loved staying here each day, while we visited various parts of the island. And although it is quite a drive to other parts, I must say this retreat is just that -- a beautiful retreat that matches (and oftens exceeds) the beauty of the rest of the island. The home is spacious and comfortable, with all the amenities we needed to have a great time! We purchased groceries in Hilo and took full advantage of the kitchen -- it was just like living there :-) The beds were very comfortable, and the tropical breezes were lovely through all the many windows throughout the home.
The ocean is just down the driveway, and it was very nice to walk down in the morning with a cup of coffee and enjoy the amazing views of the sunrise, the waves, the whole amazing package. It is breathtaking down at the water!
I highly recommend this vacation rental to anyone who desires to enjoy Hawaii like the locals do, away from commercialized resorts. It was so refreshing!
Mahalo, Chad and Sue -- it was a true pleasure to meet you! I wish you all success and happiness!

We cannot overstate just how much we enjoyed our time at aloha Lani. We were on the Big Island for 3 weeks and spent the second week on the East side of the island. It was such a nice break from the touristy west side of the island for us and we couldn't think of a better place to stay than aloha Lani. The garden and the house are breathtakingly beautiful. We enjoyed it so much more than many of the 'fancy' hotels that we have stayed in before on the West side. We had a group of 4 staying at the house (early 30's) and the accommodations at the house were great - we had everything we needed for the four of us and had plenty of space and solitude to enjoy the beautiful oasis that surrounds the house. We all absolutely loved it and can't wait to come back soon.

This is a great place to stay if you like the lush landscape of Hawaii. Our daily walks along the ocean and nearby snorkel places were wonderful. We were close to many farmer's markets and Pahoa town. The grounds are like living in a garden of tropical plants. It is open so there is plenty of sun and the house has lots of light coming in the windows. Everything we needed was there for our extended stay. This was our 2nd stay here and we plan on returning. The fresh flowers and fruit was really a treat.

We flew into Kona and slowly made our way to Hilo for the first leg of our Hawaii vacation. The house is awesome! Very spacious, comfortable, private and beautiful! It had all the comforts we needed, and lots of space. My 5-yr old son was thrilled to have his own King sized bed too! We ate dinners outside on the porch with views of the ocean. It was such a peaceful environment and the grounds are very lush and beautiful. We snorkeled in the tidepools, which were just a short drive away. Initially, I thought it would be good to stay at the tidepools, but now I know better. I'd rather have a peaceful place to stay and drive to the more touristy spots. We drove into Hilo for dinner one night and found that it was not worth the drive. Be sure to stock up on food before going out to the house. I would definitely stay here again.

This house far exceeded our expectations. It was immaculate, spacious, welcoming, private, convenient...
This was an amazing retreat for us when we visited this side of the Island for the first time. Within minutes of amazing private beaches, lava tide pools, hot spring ponds and unparalleled beauty. The owners are lovely people who generously shared all the knowledge of the local spots with us, and made sure our accomodations were comfortable. The 3 acres of lush landscaping and ocean views afforded privacy and beauty that is definitely calling us back. We highly recommend aloha Lani!

We very much enjoyed staying in a such a lovely, private location run by very welcoming hosts. The flora, fauna and wildlife on the land and in the area were beautiful and fascinating, especially for us who live in a desert area on the mainland. Visiting Pahoa, Hilo area, farmer's markets and Volcano National Park were within driving distance. The retreat center next door offered lots of activities. We left feeling relaxed and refreshed. The house (yes, it is a house!) was immaculate. It is located in a very private area, yet is right next to a retreat if that tickles your fancy. Other than some construction that was going on at the retreat (a temporary situation, I am sure), you would not know that they were there. I can not think of a better value. Yes, there are fancier places for a lot more money. And there are "dumps" for the same money. Chad and Sue are both very friendly but not intrusive. My only hesitation in writing a positive review is that the next time I want to stay here, it will be unavailable due to all the people who flock here!!!

This is a clean and comfortable home. We stayed for four days but wish that we had four more days. The snorkeling was the greatest about eight miles up the shore line... all kinds of fish, warm waters heated by the lava beneath the pools and protected from the surf with coral reefs and large lava formations. Other ocean activites are nearby. Oh yes, the orange tree near the driveway has the sweetest oranges. Chad and Sue are gracious hosts. We were very fortunate to find a large clean home with a large country acerage for our use. Thanks Chad and Sue!

My husband, sister, and I so enjoyed our stay in Kalapana. Your home was so clean...the beds were wonderfully comfortable, the cross breezes kept the home cool, and we loved the rainwater showers. You have done exceptional work in your gardens; we loved walking down your lane, crossing the road, and watching the waves crash onto the rocks below. We wondered for a brief moment if the coqui frogs would keep us awake, but that was never a problem. Thanks so much for the wonderful tips about local eateries and the best place to watch the lava flow. We sincerely appreciated it.

My wife, 2.5 year old daughter and I spent 4 nights here in early January this year. We had looked at the photos and kept thinking that I hope the place lives up to our expectations. We certainly found that the pictures while they certainly give a great impression do not do it justice. Everything was absolutely wonderful from the moment we entered the gate and slowly made our way up the long driveway. The grounds have the feeling of botanical gardens with fruit trees and well cared for ornamental plants and shrubs. The house itself was in perfect condition, very neat and tidy and tastefully decorated unlike much of what we had seen elsewhere. Everything we could possibly need was available to us including the privacy and comfort of as much or little interactions as we wanted.
Chad and Sue were wonderful, respectful hosts that offered us fresh fruit from the trees as well as flowers upon greeting. The location is stunning but a vehicle is a must. The is an endless amount of cool things to do in the area for both adult and young children such as visits to the warm pools or trips to watch the lava flows at night.
I highly recommend stopping at the superstore to load up on groceries as you pass through Hilo, the house has everything you need including a charcoal grill to make a perfect meal but selection at any of the other local stores can be lean and costly.
As a person that has been in the hospitality industry for several years now, I can really say that you will seldom find a place as well thought out, organized and set up for maximum relaxation as you will at aloha Lani. We would love to return and hope we get the chance. -

We stayed at Chad and Sue's in the deep of winter 2010 as an escape vacation from Vermont. This house is fully equipped including a kitchen and laundry, perfect for the short of long stay. We enjoyed the peacefulness every morning when we got up and every evening when we went to bed. Access to local stores in Pahoa and to the local farmer's markets made getting our daily meals of fresh fruit, vegetables and fish easy to get. Frequent trips to the tide pools for snorkeling and finding hiking trails filled our days with wonderful things to see. Chad and Sue seem to know where everything is, so just ask. We will be back.

Entering the property and driving up the driveway is a trip in itself! Once you reach the home, you know you are some place special. The home is spotless and has everything you need to enjoy your stay. Without a doubt this was the most quiet, peaceful place we ever stayed at! You hear nothing but nature. The views from the front lawn are just beautiful. The grounds around the home are like a mini botanical garden, lots of beautiful flowers and fruit trees. The home was our base to explore the area. We went on the lava tour at Kanapala and it was amazing! It is a long walk but worth the $40. It is close to Mauna Loa, Hilo and not far from Waipio Valley. The town of Pahoa nearby is very quaint and has a nice grocery and natural food store for supplies. Down by Green Lake on Fridays, the folks there make a wonderful drink of fresh squeezed sugar cane juice, fresh ginger and a bit of lime juice, yum! All and all I would recomend this property to anyone seeking peace and quiet and all the comforts of home. I guess I said that a lot during our stay, it just felt like home. Thanks to our hosts Chad and Sue, you are lovely people and all the best to you both!

Driving up to the property at night, my buddy and I were hypnotized by the abundance of stars polluting the sky...we knew that we were in for a magical time at this property.
First and foremost, the hosts are very hospitable and warm (we were even given a delicious papaya from the yard). There are absolutely no worries when it comes to staying here, as all of the necessary living comforts are provided (e.g. washer/dryer, kitchen gadgets, and linens). Driving up and down the tropical driveway laced with giant rain forest plants on our way to visit small towns, beaches, and the local volcano national park reminded us that the owners found a little piece of heaven (actually, they found a large piece) and have enabled visitors from afar to taste it during a stay at the rental house.
It is easy to have an enjoyable time in the Puna area (we recommend the Thai or Mexican restaurants in local Pahoa), and then to relax at the house while enjoying the BBQ grill and gardens. We even played volleyball (some 15 Puna locals gather to play on Tuesday and Thursday nights at the property next door).
If we return to the Big Island, I am sure that we will stay at this property again. -

If you want to experience the real Hawaii instead of a glammed up resort, and you would enjoy privacy in a well appointed, cared for, spotless home with 3 gorgeous acres of park-like landscaping and the ocean just a short walk down the tropical driveway - this is it !!
