Description from the owner
Whether you're here for relaxation or exploration--or both! --you'll love your stay at Hale Malolo. Located at the end of a tree-lined lane and nestled right against the eco-rich rainforest, this classic Hawaiian stilt-house is truly a tropical escape. By day you can explore the friendly neighborhood and get a taste of the "real Hawaii", enjoy the sunshine in the large backyard, and delight in the fruit trees that surround the house-- depending on the season we have avocados, bananas, guavas, papayas, pineapple, and mangoes! Then, when the sun sets and stars begin to appear in the sky, listen to the jungle come alive with the music of its man...Read more

DelawareThis home is truely lovely and relaxing
Left on 09/04/2012 for a stay in August 2012
This home was delightful; wonderfully comfortable beds, plenty of room for all our needs (and then some), beautifully decorated and away from the hustle bustle. It sits on piece of property loaded with tropical rain forest vegetation and fruit you can pick from the trees. The owner was very warm and inviting. She provided great suggestions for activities, offered snorkel gear, towels, anything we needed. My husband accidentally left clothes in a drawer and we were just writing them off as gone. But Brenda emailed us when we got home and asked if we wanted them back. She over-nighted them to us without hesitation. It truly was the wet side of the island, though, so expect a little rain. Our only complaint was that we didn't stay longer.

This is what we wrote in the guest book at this home after staying there for 3 nights with my family of 5 (including 3 growing boys, aged 17, 15, and 12).

Thank you very much for sharing your beautiful home with us. We were extremely comfortable during our stay here as the home has everything we need, in working order, and the beds were perfect. We appreciate your hospitality, friendliness, and thoroughness in making our time here enjoyable. -

We were welcomed by the owners and informed about many of things to do in the area. They provided lots of food, facilities for showering, beach towels at the ready and even some snorkelling and surfing gear. We could do our washing and dry our clothes (important when travelling with children). The house had a relaxed air about it and we had every luxury - including sharp knives in the kitchen and a good steroe system. The house is a little out of the way - but that was good, with 'jungle' on one side resplete with croaking frogs. No traffic noises! The owners even provided earplugs if this was a problem, but we were busy every day and the frogs lulled us to sleep. No airconditioning, but this was not a problem as there were ceiling fans and the house is well ventilated. We really enjoyed our 3 days at Hale Malolo and recommend it highly to other travellers.

peaceful and relaxing

This was our first time at a vacation rental and i was very satisfied with the experience. The process of booking the property went very smoothly. Pat and brenda offered the option of renting a bedroom instead of the whole house (for those who are interested). We wanted the home to ourselves for greater privacy and they were happy to rent it out that way.
The house is located in puna/pahoa off kahakai blvd. Very well maintained and clean. Surrounded by lots of greenery. You cannot see the neighbors and they cannot see you either (i think) till you back out of the driveway in your car.
All the amenities we wanted were available including the dishwasher/washer and dryer and a good number of kitchen utensils. Directions were also provided in a little folder to the natural attractions. Clear instructions were provided on how to use various appliances around the house. Breakfast was provided on day 1 from a small menu of options emailed to me prior to my arrival. Thank you for the passion fruit jelly (we just ordered some from amazon)
Hale malolo is located less than 10 minutes from a gas station /grocery store and farmer's market.
distance to the volcano is 50 minutes and it is 45 minutes to hilo downtown. This was convenient for us as we based most of our activities on big island around hilo and the volcano. Most of our "water activities" were on other islands. this does not mean that there is no access to beaches. But you do need to drive a bit to get to a good sandy beach. approx 30-45 minutes. ( it is easier to drive the black sand beach from here than from kona).
cell phone signals were a bit of a problem. our calls kept dropping. but the landline can be used for local calls and we were informed about the phone signals ahead of time.
Overall my husband and i had an excellent time. would highly recommend hale malolo if you are looking for a place to stay in hilo/puna/pahoa.
( the security deposit was returned very soon. the place is easy to find. internet is available and is fast) -

My family (stayed together with my wife & a nearly 5 years old kid). The house is comfortable and clean, weather was really good (sunny day + rainy night), our kid love to swim in the warm pond (just about 20 mins from the house), beautiful volcano landscape, we enjoyed 10 relax summer days in Big island and hope that we can visit again in the future.
