Blacksburg, VirginiaHome away From Home
Left on 05/07/2013 for a stay in March 2013
We have been coming to the Big Island for years and, for the last three years, we have stayed at this house. Each of our visits has been for two months or more. There are so many delightful facets to the house. It has the best outdoor shower anywhere (we have a very hard time getting our grandchildren out of it). If you read the reviews, you will see that everyone loves the shower! It is a home that includes just about everything you need living away from your own home. Each year there has been a little something special added to this rental. This year, it was delivery of the daily newspaper. What a treat to read the local news over coffee in the morning. Last year, it was internet connection and new porch furniture! The house is within walking distance to some of the best snorkeling on the Big Island .This year, a monk seal swam in just inches from my husband and hauled out on the lava for a nap! It is, also, within reasonable driving distance to Hilo and Volcano National Park. The owners, David and Nancy, are always available and concerned about the comfort and well being of their guests. We highly recommend this vacation rental.

Penticton B.C.Kapoho getaway
Left on 05/04/2013 for a stay in January 2013
My wife and I spent 5 lovely weeks at David's vacation home in the Kapoho area of Hawaii in January. We spent a total of 13 weeks on the big Island and our first five weeks in Kapoho were definitely our favourite time.
David is a kind and attentive host. It was very charming to find several flower arrangements throughout the house when we arrived. It is a very clean house and it is well equipped and very comfortable. Being able to open two sets of doors onto the lanai creates a wonderful tropical breeze through the rest of the house.
Having said that, it is an older house and as such it does have a few maintenance issues. All of which were looked after by David in a timely manner. I wonder if it may be time for a bit of upgrading here and there.
If you like to snorkel, you could not ask for a better location. It is no more than a 10 minute walk to the amazing Wai Opae tidal pools. These pools are teeming with aquatic life and the locals do a good job of keeping visitors from destroying the coral. It is never super crowded and on sunny days, the clarity of the water is amazing.
There is one group of noisy neighbours about one block away. They aren't terribly obtrusive but you will notice them unless they have moved. The coqui frogs are quite incredible. Sadly, they have invaded pretty much the entire windward side of Hawaii.
David's home is very cosy and a great value. You could not ask for anyone kinder or caring.Response from David W Shaw - 05/05/2013

I'm glad that Richard enjoyed his stay at our home and found it his favorite among the places visited on the Big Island. There were a number of small issues that occurred during his visit that had not surfaced in the past and have not been repeated once they were fixed or corrected.
As far as noise from neighbors a block away - Kapoho Vacationland is a community of many vacationers and a small number of permanent residents. It is hard to predict when some may be noisy visitors, but for the most part the neighborhood is quiet. -

Very good communication, directions, the price was right and absolutely as described (if you can't deal with geekos and tree frogs, you should likely stay in Kona). We used the house as a base to explore north of Hilo to west of Volcano as well as the nearby hot (okay -warm) ponds and coast. Everything was clean and tidy, the kitchen orderly and the flowers welcoming. We loved the outdoor shower and the deck in the morning. Old Pahoa is sweet and everywhere we ate - we never had a bad meal. If you are coming out this way - rent a Jeep as some of the best stuff is off paved roads and food shop in New Pahoa before coming out. Do pay a guide for a twilight volcano field hike - amazing!

ChicagoWinner: Best Home away From Home Vacation Stay on Big Island!!!
Left on 07/16/2012 for a stay in April 2012
I absolutely loved staying here. From the moment of arrival, when I noticed the fresh floral arrangements in absolutely every single room (even the bathrooms!), I felt cared for and comfortable in this lovely ohana just a short stroll down from the famous tidepools in my favorite area of Big Island, Kapoho, the sunny spot on Hilo side away from it all in absolute Paradise. The amenities are all there, no worries, and the warm-hearted proprietor saw to it that all our needs were certain to be taken care of, and then some -- He went so far out of his way just to be so very nice, we feel almost like family by now, or old friends; we are still in touch and will most certainly go back!!! It is just such a very lovely home in such a lovely spot, close to anything you could want --snorkeling, swimming, state parks, amazing drives and sights, town for restaurants and shops etc., yet private enough for a romantic or quiet, relaxing stay. Washer/dryer and indoor and outdoor showers are so nice, too!! Honestly I can't say enough about this place and the folks who offer it. Unless you are looking for a big hotel-type experience in a busy, touristy-type place, which this is not, and if you are looking for really nice people who offer a sweet, lovely home just a stroll from turtles and tidepools on the Hilo side, well, You have found your Paradise!!!

It's a short but breathtaking drive through the rain forest from Hilo to the house which is set on a tree lined lot; there are neighbors but you can't see them through the foilage. After climbing the stairs we were greeted by several large coconut palms facing a full deck with an inviting couch and chairs, and I had to resist just plopping down right there for the rest of the day. We entered through the french doors to a light and airy open floor plan featuring a fully equipped kitchen, fans up above on the vaulted ceiling and crisp white walls. The owner has decorated with all kinds of interesting crafts and art which really made us feel like we were in a home and not just a cookie cutter beach rental. We explored Pahoa, and had a delicious lunch at Kaleo's, and also checked out the farmers market. With dozens of booths with food and crafts it really gave us a flavor of the community. After an hour's drive that took us from sea level to 4000 ft. we spent a day at Volcano National Park which included staying until sunset to see the glow from the lava lake in the sleeping Kilauea. Another recommended visit was to Kapalana, a village covered by the lava flow, where we watched the surf as it creates a new black sand beach (hopefully before our next visit!). When you go swimming in the nearby tide pools it's like having your own giant salt water pool. Though the house is comfortable and has all the amenities we still had a feeling of being close to nature and living in the tropics; the outdoor shower certainly enhanced that as well as the nightly serenade from the singing frogs, something you sure don't hear at the resorts. This is an area rich in the history and geology of Hawaii and it was great to stay with so much nearby and available to experience, while still retaining a peaceful isolation from civilization.

Left on 12/20/2011 for a stay in December 2011
Kahi Ko'Ola Uhane truly is a place for renewing your spirit. After such hectic turmoil in our lives, we were blessed to spend a week in this sanctuary of peace and harmony. It is a wonderful and beautiful home and we are truly grateful for the opportunity to stay here. It is well-stocked with beach gear, cooking materials, and is very spacious. It is also very clean and so close to the Wai 'Opae Marine Sanctuary that we just walked to the tidepools any time we wanted to. David made us feel right at home, but was never obtrusive and was only a phone call away if we ever needed anything (we didn't!). Mahalo to David and Nancy for sharing their lovely home with us!

CAPeaceful Vacation by Tide Pools
Left on 12/13/2011 for a stay in November 2011
Enjoyed our stay at the tide pools - just a two-minute walk away. Short driving distance to Pahoa, black sand beaches and warm pond. The description and photos are completely accurate and the owners thought of everything, including snorkeling equipment, beach shoes and towels. The place was roomy enough for a whole family, comfortable and clean. Owners thoughtful and kind in arrangements, sharing of local information, and supplying all items for tranquil stay. Would recommend.

My wife and I stayed at this property for 10 days. The listing and the photos are accurate. The location to the tide pools was excellent. It was just a short drive to the hot ponds where you can swim in warm ocean water. The accommodations were excellent. The beds were comfortable. The two bathrooms were clean and neat, but the outside shower was perfect! We really enjoyed our stay and David was a great host. I would definitely recommend this property to a friend or relative. We are looking forward to returning very soon.

Enjoyed this vacation rental very much. Spacious and clean with a well equipped kitchen for dining in. Lovely garden and quiet neighborhood except after sunset when the coqui frogs serenade. It was a great place to stay while exploring the sights on the east side of the island.

Best equipped home we have ever rented. Kitchen had everything imaginable...utensils we don't have at home! Stayed a month and were not ready to leave. Felt we were part of the neighborhood and enjoyed meeting many of the people in the area, felt very safe. Loved coming "home" after long days of exploring the island. Snorkeling was just a few steps from the house and excellent!!! Appreciated extra snorkel and fin sets...and beach shoes!... when Sister and Brother-in-law joined us for the last 6 days of our visit. Wanted an outdoor shower when we got home...but temps in the 40's in Sept, it just wouldn't be the same! Big plus was having David so assessable...not that we needed anything from him. Just knowing he was there made our stay all the more enjoyable and worry free. One thing greatly appreciated by me (Donnalea), no B-52 roaches! Most bug free home we have stayed in, in Kapoho! Geckos greatly appreciated!!

We spent a month and a half in this wonderful rental house! The owners, David and Nancy, couldn't have been nicer or more helpful. They went out of their way to welcome us to Hawaii and we so appreciated their warmth. Their vacation rental is a spacious, fully equipped two bedroom home. It is located within walking distance to the Wai 'Opae tide pools (which are a snorkeler's dream)! It is close to the ahalanui Hot Pond, Kalapana, Green Lake and the town of Pahoa. Volcano National Park and Hilo are each less than an hour's drive away. The Kona side of the Island is just a few hours away by car. In short, this is a great location for your Hawaiian vacation rental. The house has a modern kitchen, well stocked bookshelf, CD rack, TV/DVR player, a dishwasher and a washer and dryer. Most delightful of all, the house features a wonderful outside shower! Once we showered outside, we never again used the inside shower! This is the tropics, however, so if you can't handle day geckos behind the pictures on the wall or a loud frog chorus at night, this is not the place for you. My husband and I came to think of this house as our home and we just loved it! It is private and well appointed. We would rent it again in a skinny instant!!! We highly recommend it! We plan to rebook it as soon as we return to Hawaii. Thank you, David and Nancy!

This was our favorite place of the 5 places we stayed on the Big Island and Maui! The house is emaculately kept. David was more than helpful and accomodating when we had questions or needed advise. We loved the outdoor shower! Best of all it is close to the tidal pools-awesome snorkeling -especially if you are snorkeling at high tide towards where the shore breaks. The corals are breath taking and the fish are mesmerizing. We are avid snorkelers and this was pure magic for us! 1 mile from there is an awesome warm pond by the ocean too. Perfect for end of the day swimming there! If you are lucky enough to stay here it will not dissappoint!! Mahalo David for all the aloha!! -Lewis Family
