Additional Location Information
We are located in a nice little neighborhood, a mix of working families, seniors, farmers... so you'll get a feel for what it's like to really live in Hawaii, not just the tourist version. There are many empty forested lots around us, too, and of course, the Forest Reserve behind us adds to the rural feel.
So much to see and do! Our field guides and information binder will help you plan your days of exploration and discovery on the Big Island.
Pahoa Town is less than a 5 minute drive, with grocery and health food stores, many good restaurants, shops, Post Office, free community pool, and more. There are several Farmer's Markets nearby for fresh produce, live music, souvenirs, and mingling with the locals.
We're only 30 minutes from Hilo, with all its museums, shops, beach parks, the bigger grocery stores... and the world-famous Hilo Farmer's Market twice a week!
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is only 40 minutes away.
Whale-watching in season (November-March) all along the coastline.

We chose to stay at Hale Pomaikai on our 2 week "Shall we move to Hawaii?" trip as we hoped to gain experience of what it is like to live in Hawaii in the Puna area. Our stay exceeded our expectations in all respects in particular we found our hosts, Liz & Mike, were an absolute delight and a literal wealth of information on the area including what it is like to live there. They were always willing to answer our numerous questions. The accommodations were clean, comfortable and exceptionally well equipped. While our main purpose was to decide if we wanted to live in that area it is also well situated to visit the many attractions in the area. In addition to the numerous and comprehensive guide books, the guide book folder but together by Liz was outstanding and very helpful. Hale Pomaikai is a very Eco-friendly place and some of the small scale farming activities that Liz & Mike are pursuing on their adjacent farm are nothing short of amazing. They helped us decide that that is where we want to be.
If you want to get to know what the "real" Hawaii is like then this is the place to stay.

We stayed 4 different places during the 2 weeks were were on the big island and this is the only one we will return to. It has a full kitchen, full living room, and large bedroom. And loads of vacation toys and information to borrow. It was far and away the best of the 4 we stayed at.

Staying at Hale Pomaika'i always makes my husband and me start looking for jobs in Hawaii and figuring out how soon we can sell our house. It's that life-changing of an experience!
First, the location is simply paradise. The Hilo side of the Big Island is a lush jungle of fragrant, beautiful tropical plants, and the cute little town of Pahoa is the perfect distance from town; far enough to avoid city noise, light, and traffic, but close enough to go to the beaches for the day or out to a nice dinner. The gorgeous, relaxing natural Warm Ponds are also just a quick drive away; it's tempting to start every morning with a nice soak!
Second, Hale Pomaika'i itself is the most comfortable place I can imagine staying. It's like a taste of home, only better! Situated on a small, secluded, natural farm, the house is cozy enough to feel intimate while roomy and open enough to be a cool oasis from the day, allowing us to spread out and "move in." Everything you need is provided, from linens and towels to condiments and Dvds! There's a lanai with comfy furniture and a grill for our almost nightly Bbqs, laundry facilities, all the dishes and cooking utensils you need, and fun touches like a "traveling library" and a toy shelf for the kids.
Finally, Hale Pomaika'i just wouldn't be complete without its wonderful, friendly, gracious hosts, Mike and Liz. These are two of the nicest people you will ever meet! Always welcoming and full of information, they're great to just sit and chat with as well as a fantastic resource on what to do and where to go. They are also an inspiration themselves, running a natural farm with chickens, pigs, and tons of fresh fruit and veggies--which, as an added bonus, they're always willing to share with guests! Be sure to ask them for a farm tour while you're there; they love sharing their passion for the land with anyone interested. They are truly the inspiration for us to think to ourselves, "Drop everything and move to Hawaii? Sure, why not??'Response from Mike & Liz - 07/02/2012
