Tropical Round House on Big Island of Hawaii
Pahoa, Hawaii
What's Nearby:
Additional Location Information
Ours is a rural location close to major attractions. The town of Pahoa, 2 miles away, is a charming sleepy, historic "Sugar Cane Railroad Village" that is still most like "Old Hawaii," not touristed as many such places are in the Islands. But nonetheless, Pahoa has arguably the greatest concentration of excellent small restaurants on the Big Island.
Our house is only 15 minutes from a large natural, lava rock, warm thermal pool and several other such small pools for delicious swimming, next to the Pacific Ocean. Ocean swimming and surfing is located only 20 minutes away by car. Also, great coral reef snorkeling. Located only one hour from Volcanoes National Park and not far from the mostly continuous active eruption of lava (which can also be viewed by helicopter or boat tour.) Two hours from Mauna Kea (year round snow) and home to many of the world's greatest observatories where you find a Star Gazing Visitors' Center for nocturnal adventures, and for amazing sunsets.
Our home is gated, and is special also for what you will not see. You will probably see no one at all during your stay, unless you want to.
The sun rises on one side of the property and sets on the other, with Hawaiian birdsongs at dawn and dusk. We have beautiful, territorial views and inestimable peace for our visitors. You will need a rental car, but a four wheel drive vehicle is not necessary, and there are no parking problems anywhere here.

We have just returned to the UK from a fabulous 2 week stay at this superb property. It really is as beautiful as it looks in the photographs - and perfectly tucked away and secluded, yet close enough to the small town of Pahoa to enable easy access for shopping and restaurants, fuel etc.
This property is located on the eastern side of Big Island - which is less touristy and much more picturesque (in our opinion). There are plenty of things to see and do within a 30 minute drive of the property - but we also travelled all across the Island with ease.
Sharon and Loly are fantastic hosts - and provide plenty of support and information via email prior to your stay in their property.
Our highlights included Humpback Whale Watching, Boat trips out to see lava flowing into the sea (amazing), snorkelling with turtles and lazing around in the thermal pools.
We chose this property from the information and comments posted on Trip advisor - and it was exactly what we were looking for!
Just a point to note about car hire - concern is sometimes raised about the Saddle Road, we hired an SUV via avis, and had no restrictions or concerns. -

The roadmap provided to the round house is very good and mandatory at night (we succeed even if had some doubts ) .
A very useful and accurate booklet is provided.
The advises we tested from the booklet are OK : Thai restaurant and Fresh Fish are very good .
Very good support from Sharon (by email and SMS )
The House is very clean and well equiped . The only surprise is the lack of window shutter , it is not a problem but not indicated in the description (but it is obvious on pictures on the web site !).
We feel alone in a forest but less than 10 minutes drive from a very nice small town (no problem with supplies) or from the ocean . Very pleasant to enjoy breakfast on the 2nd floor deck .
It is the first time I used a "green spirit" house : It works . Quite strange to have every modern appliances without beeing connected to electricity network .
And happy to live shoe free in the house .
About Mauna Kea :
It seems that Harper is the only car rental compagny to allows to use saddle road and the road to the summit .
It is a great moment to climb to see sunset and then enjoys star lights all over you (very very warm clothes are mandatory)
Please , enjoy the warm pond :
Only 10 mn drive from the house
People in the pond are very cool and friendly
But be prepared to be bite by very small fishs (surprizing the first time)
Enjoy fresh fruits : for example pineapples and small bananas are a delight .
Take care that many thinks are forbiden when you go back to Continental us ( vegetables, fruits, ...) . We had to say goodby to our avocados !
I keep a very warm souvenir of this stay and hope to come back even if it is 17 hours flight from home .

A wonderful and very comfortable place to stay! All of the cooking supplies I could ever dream of needing, basic living amenities were supplied, a comfortable bedroom and gigantic downstairs shower all there to enjoy. The porch upstairs is great and has a perfect view of the beautiful yard. The stars are 100% visible everynight and there is an amazing view of the sunrise every morning.
Being from the Big Island I loved how out of the way we were from everyone, but getting to town only takes a few minutes. We couldn't be happier with our stay, I would suggest this rental to any one of my friends or family and look forward to coming back. -

I've been to Hawaii a few times in recent years and always find myself going back to the Big Island. It's much less touristy and what I would consider to be the "real Hawaii". Before, I have stayed on the "Kona side" near Wiakaloa, which was nice, but to me, is no comparison for the lush, tropical side of the island where I stayed in this amazing house. I can't stress it enough... Amazing! This house is situated on a ton of private land and is secluded, yet is still a short drive to the quaint town of Pahoa, and an even shorter drive to seriously relaxing hot ponds (thermally heated!) Last time I was there at the ponds, a bit of rain showed up, and being in the ponds with warm rain falling on you is simply awesome. The house is a short drive from lots of great beaches too. Tan sand? Awesome. Black sand? More awesome! Green sand? Unique and so dang cool!
The house itself is totally off grid... Solar power, water containment system, etc... For an engineering nerd like me, it's so cool. Knowing you have the necessities while having it be off grid! If you don't care how that stuff works, no big deal, you don't need to... It just works on its own anyhow!
So if you want a true, real Hawaiian experience, some alone time, the most insane foliage, stars, and animal life, this is the place for you. -

Miami, FLBest experience ever!!!

My family and I look forward to vacationing every year at exotic, special places. We had previously visited the big island and stayed at a Marriott on the Kona side and even though we enjoyed ourselves, we felt that we had not experienced the real Hawaii.
We decided to go back this year , and to try the "Garden side" of the Big Island so we started the search which led us to this fabulous home close to everything but far far from it all. It's so beautiful and comfortable, all and more than we hoped for. Both my husband and I have demanding corporate hotel jobs, real high stress , And this restful place the quiet "Round House" fit the bill for us, totally.
We loved the stars, sunrises and sunsets on the deck, the views, hanging in big hammock. Hardly ever left except for an occasional trip to dine out and of course went down the road to a wonderful thermal pond at the edge of the ocean.
Highly recommended host, too . House was filled with tropical flowers in all rooms, tropical treats and local grown Kona coffee awaited us arrival. True Island hospitality. We enjoyed it so much my sister booked it for her family when we got home. Excellent!

We love Hawaii and we actually had our first Big Island experience with this amazing home rental" round house"as our base. I can hardly express to you how nice it is there. The solitude and sounds of nature were so very therautic. It was an unbeatable location to hang out in or to come home from our beach, volcano and Mauna Kea hiking and star gazing but we were still so close to everything. The house is roomy and equipped with all the comforts but in the center of a large wild orchid forest, full of birds among stately trees. Loved it hated to leave there and are definitely coming back.

My boyfriend and I were looking for a non-"touristy" kind of experience on our trip to the Big Island, and so we chose the Hilo side for lodging, specifically the area of Puna. About 30 minutes away from the Hilo airport, we discovered an absolutely marvelous, wild and lush jungle filled with adventures. It was a great place from which to launch our all-over island exploring.
I started researching vacation rentals and found this one, reasonably priced for the amount of space provided, and it looked great: secluded, unique, and elegant. Sharon, the owner was easy to work with, and very diligent about responding to my emails.
We rented a jeep and found the place with little trouble, after turning down an almost hidden little dirt road. As we headed further into the jungle and further away from the main road, suddenly the branches receded and revealed an open clearing with this stately gem of a house perched at the top. It really is a sight!
We are pretty eco-conscious people, and so it was a bonus to us that the house is "off the grid" style, being totally solar powered and uses a reservoir of collected rain water. Tell the truth, though, it was barely an afterthought, since everything ran as smoothly as if we were back home in the city...
...except better! The jungle is also home to a symphony of tropical birds that serenade you every morning! And the fresh tropical rain that comes and goes (in a matter of minutes) with ease leaves the air feeling crisp and refreshing. After deep comfortable sleep following our day hikes and meanders, we would wake up and enjoy coffee on the huge covered wrap around deck, just listening to the jungle sounds...
At night we cooked dinners in the open Kitchen, found it stocked with all the necessities, opened up the french doors and kicked back, listening to music. We didn't have to worry about bothering our neighbors, because we didn't have any!
A lovely experience, can't wait to come back! We recommended for a unique adventure!
