We enjoyed staying here and would recommend it as a great deal for a stay in the city. Know that it is a busy city though, and expect noise from the market.
Booking was easy and Gabriele answered all questions promptly. We were met by his brother and then met his parents who reside in the building... all very friendly and helpful. I would only suggest that there be a dish cloth and tea towel in the kitchen for cleaning up because we made good use of the facilities and these were the only noticeable things missing! -

For young people who don't mind some evening noise this may be ok but it was a bit too "in the thick of it"!for us! We certainly saw a side of Palermo we had not seen before and became lost in the car behind all the markets a couple of times!
It was clean and beds comfortable if a somewhat unworkable layout-as stated in the write up- only one real bedroom- didn't use the kitchen to cook as it was more pleasant to eat out! -

We just spent a week here and I must say it was fabulous! The location in the Capo Market makes it a great place to start exploring this amazing city. Everything you need is literally at your doorstep. The apartment is well appointed and very comfortable and clean. The owners are a pleasure to deal with and very helpful. If I was going to Palermo again I would 100% stay here. We walked the entire city, taking in the all the markets, the many cafes, alleys, sights etc. We walked at night with no fears and we got up each morning to coffee, pastries and paninis 1 minute from our door...Loved here! It was easy to find after getting off the airport to Palermo bus, it was a 5 minute walk from the bus stop...easy!

A lovely clean and comfortable apartment in the middle of the market and no we didn't find it too noisy. We had the most beautiful produce, wine etc on our doorstep for a very reasonable price. My husband cooked us some lovely meals so adequate facilities. We also had some nice meals out particularly one just over the road (On the Wall, can't remember the Italian). We had a friendly welcome and lots of information from Gabriele and his father. We travelled to lots of places on buses and trains. We even went to agricento (Valley of the Temples) by train. The trains were air conditioned which helped a lot as the last few days it got very hot.We were glad of the air con in the bedroom which kept us cool at night. We particularly loved a little bar about 5 mins away in Piazza Beati Pauli. Always a good welcome and service and lovely chilled wine for a good price. We would recommend this apartment to friends and family and would like to go back again. There is so much to see in Palermo and I look forward to the reopening of the refurbished Museum of archaeology.
It was a lovely old area to stay in. Beautiful crumbling old churches and other buildings. At times we felt we were in a more exotic destination like North africa. There were fruits and vegetables in the market that I had never seen before. So much better than a package trip in a hotel that is the same as all over the world and serving the same kind of fare. Try and learn a bit of Italian!

This is a great little flat with endless entertainment provided by the market. We spent ages on the balcony watching the activity below and also enjoyed buying fruit, veg, cheese, salami and bread. Cooking facilities limited but there is also a great trattoria over the road by the ancient gate. It actually wasn't particularly noisy though don't expect to sleep before the market is cleaned at around 11pm. It was great to be in such a lively but historic place and so near all the sights. Good instructions provided, there was a lift to help with luggage and we were welcomed very efficiantly and warmly by Gabriele's brother.

Left on 05/23/2012 for a stay in May 2012
Can you boil water? Can you work a fry pan? Then you too can have free rent at Il Capo. The most wonderful and fresh food you have ever tasted , at prices so low, and literally under your window. If you will spend an hour of your day, boiling water and heating a fry pan, you can easily save 50 euros a day and enjoy fresh squeezed orange juice, pancetta, eggs & toast, pepper crusted fresh tuna,, giant fresh shrimp, pasta of all sorts, chicken, beef, every fruit you can name, veggies, wine & beer, as we have done these 7 days in Palermo. We've loved the entertainment of watching the culture of the market and had fabulous food at the same time. The location is great, the facilities, condition; we'll always stay at Il Capo when in Palermo..

CUMBRIAA good base for a short visit to Palermo
Left on 04/02/2012 for a stay in March 2012
"Il Capo" is situated in the middle of the market and for four days we found it a fascinating and very convenient base for a visit to Palermo. The apartment is small (two at the most) but spotlessly clean. The sleeping accommodation is excellent. A small balcony overlooks the market which is very interesting, though be ready for all the associated noises from about 6am onwards.
The kitchen area was small but adequate though another easy chair would have been appreciated. Our apartment was on the second floor to which there was a lift.
The contact with the owner before the visit was prompt and informative.
For a short stay - three/four nights we would certainly recommend this property in Palermo. -

I stayed with my partner in November 2011 for a week and found this apartment to be perfect for our needs. Compact and well positioned, the kitchen had all we needed for some in house cooking and being right next to the market meant we could buy fresh food daily. The approachable owner provided a number and was on site if we had any problems (which we didn't). He gave us with a map and some pointers of things to see on day one. We can also say we have never stayed anywhere so clean! Many thanks

London, UKExcellent apartment
Left on 12/27/2011 for a stay in December 2011
I recently stayed in Gabriele Freni's apartment in Palermo and I would say it was an excellent experience from several points of view. First, it is located in a unique place - within the 'safety' of the Palace of Justice grounds, but also right next to the Capo market. This is a famous market, where all your food can be bought, particularly fish, which is in abundance and fresh daily. The apartment block is within walking distance of all 'central' Palermo points, notably the Teatro Maximo, the Teatro Politeamo, the Via Della Liberta etc. The apartment block is recently renovated and each apartment (as well as the general ambience) is very pleasant - as are the family you deal with. The Freni family go out of their way to make you welcome, and the brothers speak fluent English. I would recommend anyone to go there - but I had better not say too much as all their apartments will be booked up and there will be no room for me to go back myself! Phillip Riley

Left on 11/15/2011 for a stay in October 2011
My son and I stayed at the Il Capo for ten days from October 16th- 26th. We were visiting because my elder son had just begun his placement at the University in Palermo.
The apartment was neat and compact. The power shower was a welcome relief after a day's walking as being centrally located we had walked everywhere.
The bustling market downstairs was very exciting and we cooked Sicilian local produce on several occasions. My only negative feedback would be that ...as we had all the modern gadgets like ipod, iphone, nintendo DS etc there were not enough 'working sockets' . The sockets in the kitchen wall were not functional.
The owners have an office downstairs and I was able to obtain fresh towels easily. On the last day as our flight was late in the evening the owners let us stay till it was time for us to depart. Such kindness is much appreciated. I would certainly stay again if I returned to Palermo. -

We stayed at Residence Porta Carini for a total of 5 nights in June. The apartment was extremely clean and well-equipped and the Capo market was literally on our doorstep. Our tiny balcony looked over the bustling market place, it was fascinating, and fun to be able to shop like a local. The owner's son Gabriele lives on the premises and speaks perfect English. He went out of his way to look after us, even getting up early on 2 occasions to make sure that taxis he had booked for us had turned up! We were able to use the laundry room and even the office computer. The apartments are very secure and within easy walking distance of several main attractions, including the cathedral, the opera house. The train station and port area are a short taxi ride away.

Oslo, NorwayA great location for exploring an exciting city!
Left on 04/19/2011 for a stay in April 2011
The Porta Carini is spacey, clean and located in Via Carina, the home of the bustling Capo market.
The family that runs the residence is friendly and eager to help you. Gabriele and his father family were very accommodating and let us stay until the late afternoon on the day of our departure.
If you want to be a part of a neighborhood that springs to life early in the morning, this place is definitely a good choice. But if you want to spend your mornings in bed in total calm isolated from the rest of the world, I suggest you go somewhere else. And perhaps to a different city.
Thank you for a great stay! -

NorwayVery comfortable stay
Left on 09/03/2010 for a stay in August 2010
We stayed in Residence Porta Carini for one month during the summer and we found the apartment to be very comfortable for such a long stay. The kitchen was large enough and in good shape so that we could do most of our cooking at home. We also had a generously sized bedroom with drawers, wardrobe and aircondition. The aircondition was off course a must in the hot month of august. The airconditon was in perfect condition so we did not have any problems with the temperature. Our bathroom was also nice and had all the amenitites of a good bathroom. Our apartment was on the third floor and so the escalator of the property came in very handy.
We also had the service of cleaning and change of sheets and towels once every week as promised in the ad. The owner was very accomodating and helped us with any questions we had. We also had a very good price for our long stay and so it is great value for money.
The location right next to the Capo market was also a great advantage as we could just step outside our front door to do our shopping. The capo market had a very good selection of fruit, vegetables, fish and meat and coming from the northern part of the world we loved having the sweet fruits of the south every day.
All in all I can recommend the Residence Porta Carini very warmly to anyone who needs a place to st ay in Palermo. -

wonderful apartment. Gabriele met us at the bus stop despite our late arrival and showed us a bit of the local area to help us get our bearings. Right at the heart of Palermo and on top of the market where you can find anything! Short walking distance to more or less everything and from the bus stops to Mondello, Monte Pellegrino and Monreale. Clean and comfortable and service above and beyond, only downside is no pool but approx. 25mins from the best beach I've ever come across. Gabriele's girlfriend is also very nice and they both made us feel like family visiting - highly recommended.

The apartment is very clean with a good bathroom. It is situated in central Palermo in walking distance of most things and a few minutes walk to the bus if not. It is directly above the fresh food markets, with all provisions at the door. The buidling has good secruity. The apartment owners are living in the same building and are very helpful and accomadating. The location is in the central city so expect to hear the usual city noise and the bells of the local churches which did not worry us at all. We thouroughly enjoyed our stay.

Catskills, NY, USANice stay in Palermo
Left on 02/27/2010 for a stay in September 2009
We enjoyed our stay at Residence Porta Carini. We can't say enough good things about Gabriele; we had trouble finding the apartment the first night, and Gabriele actually came out at 10:00 PM to meet us and guide us to the apartment. One thing that could be important to you: if you don't have a cell phone that works in Sicily (as we did not), you will probably have trouble trying to call someone's cell phone from one of the public pay phones (didn't work for us). We were able to contact Gabriele via email from one of the internet cafes. It would be wise to try to get the land line phone number of your contact (which we got from Gabriele during our email exchanges). As to the apartment, it was a good location (wonderful open air market right below our window). The kitchen could have used a few more utensils, but we did cook and were really happy with our stay there. Gabriele also helped us find a good metered parking area nearby, which is important because parking in Palermo can be a nightmare (not to mention the driving! Don't expect people to always pay attention to traffic lights. You have to be aggressive or you will confuse the seasoned Palermo drivers.).

Londonexperience the sights and sounds of Palermo!
Left on 02/26/2010 for a stay in February 2010
We approached the address we had been given with some trepidation, as it turned out to be in the midst of a very lively street market! However, round a corner, the owner's brother was waiting for us; we found the entrance to the apartment block which is only two years old - a stark contrast to the surrounding buildings and Porta Carini itself, which dates from the 12th century.
The apartment was spotlessly clean, comfortable and well-equipped (although it would have been nice to have a second armchair and to have the TV in the kitchen/diner instead of in the bedroom!)
It was situated conveniently for us to explore all the major sights of Palermo on foot (e.g. only 10 minutes to the Norman castle and Cappella Palatina). Frequent buses pass the end of the road.
In spite of the noise generated by the market early in the mornings, not to mention the bells of the church right opposite, we really loved our stay in Palermo and miss the wonderful market produce as well as the sunshine. -

The apartment is in an ancient building and it is newly furbished. You can find
all the essential for living, cooking etc. The location is great! You are INSIDE
the city centre at walking distance from the main monuments of the city. The
commercial area is nearby and one of the four ancient markets of Palermo is
just in front of your balcony. There you can find vegetables, meat, fish, etc. so
you can even decide to cook in the apartment and then go around for a walk.
Busses and taxies are nearby in order to reach the Mondello or the railway

Warsaw, PolandA good apartment in the centre of Palermo
Left on 02/17/2010 for a stay in December 2009
The apartment is in the very city centre. You can reach churches and
monuments walking. Just in front of the apartment, you can visit a beautiful
baroque church. The apartment is pretty and newly furbished with all the
essentials for living (dishes, cutlery, etc.). There is an old traditional market
downstairs where you can find vegetables, meat, fish, etc. The prices are
good and you can think to visit some monuments in the morning, go home
for lunch roasting some fresh fish and continue your visits in the afternoon.
The apartment is nearby the court of justice and it is guarded all the day.
Walking around between these buildings during the morning, you have the
feeling of how important antimafia war is in that city.
The apartment owner is very helpful and he speaks a quite fluent English. If
you have a problem, you can phone him and he will try to help you. He
suggested us restaurants, cheap ways to travel around the city and many
other things I do not remember.
I would recommend this apartment to those willing to live Palermo centre
and not simply visit it.
