Description from the owner

Amazing and comfortable house, close to the beach in Balestrate. Here at Casa Tuzzo we offer you a unique chance to experience the beautiful Gulf of Sicily. Balestrate is located less than an hour's drive from some of Sicily's premier tourist attractions. Some of the 'must-sees' of the island include Palermo, Monreale and Cefalù with their impressive artistic heritage, Agrigento for its temples, Segesta for its Greek theatre and temple, the beautifully preserved medieval stone city of Erice, the archaeological park of Selinunte, and the reservoir of Zingaro.

Fantastic Villa close to the beaches, in a very quite Traditional Sicilian V...Read more

      Nice apartment in quiet location

Left on 04/13/2013 for a stay in April 2013

Before reviewing the property itself its important to mention the excellent customer service provided by Piero from Case Del Golfo and also from the owner himself. Piero was great to deal with and always made himself available regardless of the time of day. We had a couple of small issues with the wifi, gas and electricity which were resolved very quickly.

The property was Zabbara in alcamo Marina. It was a clean and very pleasant apartment with a lovely roof terrace and barbecue. There was plenty of room in the kitchen and living room area and it felt quite spacious. The terrace was a little disappointing in the evening though as it lost the sun quite early. This may not be such an issue for more mid-summer visits when a break from the sun is probably welcome.

The location was too quiet for us with only two restaurants and one bar within walking distance. You couldn't really contemplate this town without having access to a car. Although the property is close to the beach, it is quite a convoluted walk to get there unless you want to cross under a muddy, stony tunnel (not recommended).

We literally had the entire town to ourselves as it was deserted. I presume it would be much busier in the summer but the lack of easily reachable facilities would still be a problem.

We don't want to be too harsh with the location though as it did provide an excellent base for trips around the local and extended areas.

All in all an excellent holiday in a comfortable apartment that offered excellent value for money. Even if we didn't stay in this particular location again, we would certainly use Piero to book our future apartments.

      "Fantastic and wonderful Holiday"

Left on 02/28/2013 for a stay in January 2013

"This is an ideal house for people who enjoy the peace and quiet of the country and yet wants easy access to a town, to beaches or the mountains - all of which are a short drive away. We found some spectacular places to swim such as Zingaro and Scopello. The house is situated in a quiet area, about 10 minutes outside Balestrate where we were able to buy delicious fish and vegetables to barbeque in the evenings. The house was basic but most of our time was spent in the garden where you can sit in the sun or shade, take a dip and enjoy the barbecue in the evenings. The garden, was inconspicuously tended by the owner, who also let us eat the delicious basilico, lettuce and cucumber that he grew! Piero and anna were very helpful and friendly, as were the owners - everyone went out of their way to be welcoming and offer advice if needed, which was appreciated. We really enjoyed our stay and would certainly return."

      Una perla di affidabilità

Left on 02/28/2013 for a stay in October 2012

      Living like the Siciians!

Left on 02/06/2013 for a stay in December 2012

How very very cool is this to be able to stay right in town and near the beach in a quiet area outside of Palermo. We were able to go to the local market daily and cooked our own meals inside the apartment. "Mama" was there to greet us and made us feel just like we were at home. My kids loved our little taste of living like the locals and truely enjoyed this. We cant wait to return!

      The best of Sicily!!

Left on 11/28/2012 for a stay in June 2012

Piero had to find us to get to the place. Not because it is hard to find, just because we got lost. So the service was, excellent!

The apt was clean, the bed was very comfortable, the linens where clean.
The house is wonderful furnished we cooked some great meals. We walked everywhere. Parking was easy.
Great food right across the street as well as right behind it the apt. The hotel behind has a great dinning room view of the ocean .
The train stop is 4 or 5 blocks down the street so if you did not drive you can take the local train.
the best part of the stay was Piero sharing one of the best meals, with us that we had on our whole 4 week stay in Italy.
Let's see least our stay here was to short and the towels could of been a little softer.

Beware of the positive reviews. Don't stay here more than a nig

Left on 11/25/2012 for a stay in November 2012

We booked two weeks at this rental apartment with our two young children to spend time on the beach off-season and in this small village located on the bus/train lines to Palermo. There is a sad and unpleasant air to this little apartment. At first glance it seems OK but it is not at all suitable for an extended stay with our without young children. There had been a very cursory cleaning before our arrival that did little to the thick layer of dust in every corner and through the thin bedding. The beds themselves are cheap cots, there isn't enough bedding for any off-season stays, and we were not given access to even a decent broom. We all broke out in rashes during our stay and ended up leaving early. The owner does not live in the area and he leaves the care of the apartment to his mother who tries to make up for the inadequacy of the rental by bringing over food. Unfortunately, we found ourselves wrapped up in an unpleasant family drama as we were trying to leave. The kitchen itself is tiny and it is difficult to do any proper cooking yourself. The apartment is very dark and smells like mold. This place is fine for a night or two if you have no allergies and you eat out but please save yourself a bad holiday and stay somewhere else if you are there with children or you want to stay longer.

Dear Jelena and John. I am so sad to hear this words.

You booked the hosue for 14 days in October and We figured out everithing for you: from the aiport' transfer to the hosue, to your welcome meal in the night, to your suddenly change of plan to leave the house after 11 days. If the house was so bad for you, why you dint ask the money back the day after?

I usually live close to the house, but i was on holiday and you never requested an Daily Assistance.
My mother try to be kind with you, not because of overcoming what do you think bad about the hosue, just because it is part of our culture (and yoy left the house without saying ther Good Bay, and she pay for the transfer to Palermo as well).

We have 61 positive reviews and you can contact everyone , one by one. The house is wonderful.

The fact is (as many neighour told me that saw you also on the street doing this) that you had argues each other, your very young children was Unhappy. The weather was not so good. And you were without Car, Phone and internet (for your decision, becasuse as you know there was internet in the house and International TV)

For the next time, i would advice to relax each other, dont be strees and
take a Baby Sitter . We could organized it, if we would have knew in advance.

      a great place to stay

Left on 11/14/2012 for a stay in September 2012

We stayed in an apartment managed by Piero. It was situated in Via Roma, Balestrate. It was a large 2nd floor, 2 bedroom apartment, sleeping at least 5 people. It was extremely well located, just two minutes from the town square and 5 mins from the beach. There were many great restaurants within ten minutes walk, our favourite being Oltramarre. The food here was modern Sicilian.
We found Piero to be extremely friendly and generous. There was wine, fruit and water on our arrival and he presented us with a large Sicilian cake on our departure. He arranged our transfer from the airport and he himself brought us back on departure.
All in all, we had a lovely relaxing holiday in Balestrate. We have been to Sicily on several occasions and so we did not wish to do much sightseeing. However, it is well located, with trains and buses within a five minute walk.
We would be happy to recommend Piero to our friends.

Very accommodating hosts in a sleepy village

Left on 07/14/2012 for a stay in June 2012

I was a bit confused at first when booking this, as the details say the villa sleeps 18?? Anyhow, the apartment actually sleeps 6, but I think there are 2 other apartments in the same house with similar sleeping arrangements, being 1 x double bed, 1 x sleeper couch (double - just!), 1 x single bed and 1x single sleeper. There is one bedroom and one living room where people can sleep. It is probably best to ask the owner re sleeping arrangements, as we nearly got unstuck with this!
I have no complaints about the apartment itself (although the rustic decor is not really to my taste). It was clean and comfortable and had pretty much everything we needed for a self catering apartment.
Piero and Natalia were very hospitable, giving us a lift from the shops, advice on where to go, helping translate for us when we happened to be dining at the same restaurant, even giving us a big chunk of sicilian cheese to try! 5 stars just for this! We also got some restaurant discount vouchers for being clients of Piero's. :)
The location is close to the beach, which is sandy (yay!), and the water (when we were there) is very calm. I did find the beach a little bit dirty, though, as there were torn up bits of newspaper floating around in the sea :(
Balestrate itself is a small village (we bumped into Piero a number of times on the first day!), close to Palermo, Segesta, Erice as other people have noted, so very convenient as a 'base'. However, we found it difficult to find a place for lunch, as many restaurants were closed, as well as the supermarket! I suppose it is like Spanish siesta time. Everything comes alive in the evenings though, when it is cooler and more comfortable. Having said that, though, there is little choice of restaurants, being such a small place (especially if you don't eat seafood!)

We stayed in this apartment in Balestrate, a seaside town 50km west of Palermo, in May 2012. It's an old building with very high, domed ceiling and artistic decor. From the balcony, you can see sea in both direction. The high street is just up the road in walking distance. A perfect place for our short stay in Sicily, touring the western part of the island. The apartment is full of character, with a theme of Gustav Klimt. We really enjoyed our stay there. The landlord Piero was

Piero was a very gracious host. He welcomed us into the roomy apartment we had rented and helped us any way we needed. This apartment would be considered quite large compared to any other place we have stayed on out 2 trips to Italy. It was located in a convenient area of town. We could access restaurants and markets easily. The pretty water was a block away. If there was any downside it would only be the hot water heater is small and only 1 out of 3 women got hot water. We did enjoy our stay!

      Our great Italian adventure

Left on 02/04/2012 for a stay in January 2012

My wife and I have just returned (February 1st, 2012) from a 3-month vacation in Italy celebrating her retirement, our long marriage and reaching 65 years of age in good health. During that vacation, we had the good fortune of finding and staying in one of the most charming one-bedroom rental apartments of Piero and Natalia in Balestrate.
Balestrate is a small seaside community about a 45-minute drive west of Palermo. It has the usual piazza, church and one main street of about 20 blocks. It is peaceful, has a great harbour and surrounding beaches--all of which can be be seen in a 2-day overnight visit. However, Balestrate's tremendous upside is its close proximity within an hour's drive to such other communities as Palermo, Cefalu, Castellammare, Erice, Corleone and Segesta each of which needs its own full day to explore.
Our apartment itself was as advertised, with us being the first guests after its recent and bold renovation by Piero and Natalia. It does not have central heating so we had to use several propane heaters strategically placed throughout the day in different rooms to keep ourselves cozy. Piero and Natalia could not have been more accommodating and gracious. They provided an extra heater upon request, provided us with a generous fruit basket from Piero's family farm upon our arrival, guided us in or daily excursions and had us to dinner one evening serving their delectable local favourites.
All in all, one of our best weeks. It must be fantastic in spring, summer or fall!

We rented the apartment in Balestrate during the off season for four nights. The apartment is ideally located, close to many wonderful sites. It is spacious and, although an old building, well maintained. There are a few steps to carry your bags up to the apartment. The town is small, but hosts many delicious restaurants, markets and places to enjoy an expresso. It is wonderful for a night's stroll after a day of touring. Piero is a gracious host. When we arrived he was right there to help us settle in and give us many ideas of where to tour. He invited us to join him for a couple of special "adventures" which we really enjoyed. My husband finally got to a wifi - so his life was complete. We really enjoyed our stay and recommend it. Be sure to
leave your window open early in the morning...there were several vendors selling their wares going by announcing their produce for sale.

      Unexpected Surprises

Left on 10/25/2011 for a stay in September 2011

This apartment would have been a great place to stay had it been clean. There was an awful odor in the kitchen. The bath rug was very dirty and the shower door was broken and off the track. We felt that we had to wash all the dishes before we could use them. Surface areas also needed cleaning. The inside of the refrigerator was filthy. There were some nice antiques but other pieces of furniture were in poor shape. Paint was peeling off the ceiling. If you can ignore dirt, etc., you will do okay here.
The owner's mother was wonderful. She was very kind and brought us all sorts of goodies including her delicious pasta and assortments of pastries. We feel bad making negative comments.
Balestrate is a quiet town. We felt safe here and were happy to find street parking near the apartment. Crowds from the cafe down the street were very noisy in the late evening especially on Friday and Saturday nights. It is an easy-walking distance to the train station (we took the train to Palermo).
As far as the description of the apartment, it has one bedroom with 3 beds, one of them being kingsized. It has one dilapidated sofabed and plenty of floorspace. It has one small bathroom with a toilet, basin, and a small shower in the corner. The kitchen has a small cooktop and a microwave. There is very little space to prepare food and storage for utensils is wanting.
We hope that the owner will make an effort to thoroughly clean and repair the apartment. That would really help to make this a pleasant place to stay.

      Hospitable but not what expected

Left on 05/08/2011 for a stay in April 2011

Arrived at 11pm, and owner was not there to welcome us. He sent his friend, who not his fault, but knew nothing about the property. Discovered this property using Vrbo. Vrbo description was completely wrong. It stated it had more beds than it actually did, and was missing appliances, such as microwave (although brought later), outside grill, etc. Owner's mother was the nicest lady I have ever met, and if she had not been so hospitable, our trip would have been very very disappointing.

Ero molto contento.
Thank you for everything! My apartment felt like home. It was very comfortable and lovely. I sat at the desk and worked with the light of the sun next to me and the soft breeze coming in from the big window. I was very content.

Charming old house in the centre of Ballestrate, close to the seaside. Great hospitality with typical Sicilian welcome meal and breakfast. Excellent base to visit Palermo and west Sicily. Apartment is sun oriented and has two nice terraces, but could use some upgrading/refurbishing. Ideal for people looking for simple local charm, not for people looking for sophistication and luxury.

      1) Located of this house for me was brilliant- very close to the city center, main street with shops, bars and so on.. In front of the house there are 2 Restaurants where you can have breakfast, lunch even when its siesta, nice dinner with vine from private farm.
      2) Flat located on the second floor. There are two balcony with wonderful view on the see. The flat was was always clean and with all necessary conditions for tourists to stay there.Flat was very big and comfortable. A lot of sun through the big windows make it very light and pretty.
      3) Owner made a party for guest- it was good. Some times mother of owner brought a special sicilian breakfast- very tasty. It was very kindly owners. It was little bit far from the see by walk, approximately 15 min slowly.. but I prefer to stay closer to city center, thats way for me it was much convenient variant.

      Best trip of my life

Left on 01/06/2011 for a stay in June 2010

We stayed in a 2rooms villa in alcamo-CaseDelGolfo. This villa has an amazing view. A big balcony which we were almost living there from the sunrise to sunset! The balcony was enough for up to 10 people to sunbath and relax. We were mostly sitting there, having breakfast, lunch & dinner and of course drinking!
The villa was clean, and more than enough of kitchen stuff were available. A bottle of Sicilian white wine was in the fridge and we even had Cuban coffeemaker which was just perfect for brewing coffee (the coffee itself was also available).
The only problem we had was warm water for showering which was sometimes unavailable.
Sitting in the balcony and looking at the sea while listening to the God Father's song is what I recommend to everyone.

The ultimate in unique, sicilian hospitality

Left on 12/30/2010 for a stay in April 2010

I have travelled to Sicily many times and have fallen in love with the island and it's people so much, I find it hard to contemplate holidaying elsewhere now.
I have stayed at this house on several occasions and love it. It is simply the epitamy of the unique, traditional Siciian way of life, and the Tuzzo family optimise Sicilian hospitality at it's best. The welcoming I have received has been far from tantermount on every occasion I have visited. The warm and very friendly welcoming I have received and the way the Tuzzo's encapsulated me in their family is remarkable.
Experiencing traditional Sicily is a heartwarming, yet exciting experience. The people and all the island has to offer with it's climate, devastating scenery, history, the food and wine is most surely unsurpassable. I would recommend any one to sample Sicily at least once in their lifetime.

      Travelling alone in beautiful Sicily

Left on 12/21/2010 for a stay in May 2010

I love to travel and have been lucky enough to visit Sicily many times (a wonderful island that I never get enough of). But this was my first trip to the western side. I was very nervous before departure, I would stay there for a month, I was travelling all alone and had no friends in the area.

But I was worrying for no reason. When I arrived Balestrate located right by the sea, I became acquainted with Piero and several of his friends. They took care of me like I was family. They showed me all the sights (I had no car), took me on many local activities, out at restaurants and at home they served me homemade food and I even got a night of dancing in Palermo.

Two days before I would go home to Norway my credit card was destroyed. The banks were all closed in Balestrate and I had to get to Trapani where I had to stay one night and then to the airport. But there was a guardian angel ... of course, Piero. Not only did he lent me money, but he drove me all the way to Trapani including a trip to visit all the sights and cities along the road. In Trapani, he found through walks around the streets an apartment for me and helped me with everything that was to be arranged with the bus ticket to the airport, etc.

Of course Sicily is an incredibly beautiful island, with scenery so beautiful that one might sit on the bus for hours, surrounded by crystal clear water. So much good wine and great food that changes for each area.

But the best part of Sicily is the people!

      I
