Long Beach, CaliforniaAlmost Perfect
Left on 05/02/2013 for a stay in April 2013
Apparently I am one of the few first time visitors to aruba who didn't know that almost all residences on the island have no hot water. The pipes are just below or above ground and the water is heated by the sun so what one ends up with is water that is around the same temperature as the ocean water. Only the hotels have the ability to cool down water heated by actual water heaters so if you are a hot water lover stick to the big hotels.
That being said, The aruba Cunucu Residence is a wonderful place to stay if you are looking for a peaceful and fairly inexpensive place to stay and don't need hot water. I only stayed 2 nights ( I need hot water) but had booked and payed cash for an entire week. I Spoke with the owner John and the manager Henke and they had no problems only charging me for the nights I stayed until I found a hotel to go to and gave me a refund for the nights I didn't stay.
The area is really quiet and calm unlike where all the hotels are. The infinity pool was beautiful and immaculate and there were plenty of seats and palapas for shade. There were a ton of beach towels for guest use and a laundry basket to return the dirty ones to. Each room has its own little separation with a table and chairs on the pool side of the building. The kitchens were stocked with everything one needs for vacation cooking and had apartment sized refrigerators with room for all necessities like beer. There was even a barbecue out by pool. The mattress was one of the most comfortable I have ever slept on during vacation. I really wish there was a way to get hot water there because in my book it would make this place perfect. -

We have just returned from our third six week vacation at Cunucu,(and we have booked again for next year) this was our eleventh trip to aruba over the last twenty years, all but the last three in the hotels, but once we found John and Eleanors perfect oasis that was it, no more fighting the crowds or getting up at the crack of dawn to get a chair at the beach or the pool, we still love going to the beach then coming home to the tranquility of Cunucu where you open your door onto the pool and there your chair awaits. John and Eleanor have provided everything you need for a wonderful relaxing vacation and do all they can to make you comfortable, an added bonus is meeting with friends made on previous stays, cant wait to return.

Left on 03/19/2013 for a stay in March 2013
We have just returned from a week's stay in this hotel and the service we received was second to none. John and Eleanor the owners were there as well as Henk the Manager and his wife Gloria to fulfil our every need. John and Eleanor were always on hand to give you any info about the island and are most welcoming and friendly. It's like a "home from home" with the added bonus of beautiful weather and location. Henk and Gloria provided clean maintained apartments and pool area, towels, easy hire car rental and were also very friendly and always on hand to answer questions. We were in the studio accomodation which had a living area, bedroom area and kitchen area which was very very spacious and had all the necessary equipment for you to cook should you so wish. The pool being a few steps from your front door was brilliant and the surrounding seating area and the huge bean bag made for a very relaxing peaceful day through to evening when the pretty pool lights came on. The BBQ was always available for al fresco cooking. The location is great as it is in a quiet neighbourhood with no one overlooking you at the back and ample car parking space for your car. It is near to the beaches which were so clean and beautiful and just as you imagine the Caribbean to be and downtown was just a short ride away. There are little local shops for groceries and the bigger supermarkets are not that much further away. The unheated water was not an issue for us no matter what time of the day we showered. In fact it was quite refreshing as the temperature made you quite hot and it was nice to just have luke warm water to cool you down. We enjoyed our stay here so much that we wished we had stayed for longer we will definitely return to aruba sooner rather than later and this hotel is the place we will stay as it made for a very relaxing break, in a great location, with Jonh and Eleanor making sure our stay was very comfortable and enjoyable and most of all memorable. One Happy Island!!

Left on 02/28/2013 for a stay in February 2013
We stayed in the one bedroom room in Feb. 2013 and loved every minute of our stay. We were greeted by Henk and he showed us to our room. He offerred us chairs and a cooler to rent for the week, which we did! The room was spacious and clean. The kitchen had everything we needed: microwave, stovetop, toaster, coffee pot, plenty of cooking items and even storage containers for leftover food. The bathroom was nice and had a large shower. Some other guest complained while we were there about not having hot water. Most places do not have hot water per se, but it's not cold either. The water is warmed by the sun, so as long as you take a shower when the sun is out you will be fine. Only expensive hotel supply hot water, but I wouldn't waste my time staying there! The bedroom was huge and had lots of space for us to store suitcases and plenty of drawers and hangers for our clothes. The bed was firm, but I slept great the entire time. The outside living area was great and we took advantage of the pool daily which was just outside our door. The water was clean and refreshing and they provided pool towels free of charge. The owner, John and Eleanor were at the hotel while we stayed and introducted themselves on the first full day. We even ran into them at the Caribbean Store Bar (it's a must, super cold and cheap beers) and we hung out with them and other guests from the hotel. The location is perfect, technically one block back from, in my opinion, the best beaches in aruba, Malmok and Catalina Bay. It's near the goft course as well. If you rent a car, they have assinged parking spaces, which was nice as well. I would highly suggest booking this hotel for any stay in aruba. You can't beat the price or the hospitality. Feel free to email me with other questions.

Very proud of myself for finding this gem. Great location b/w palm beach and arashi beach- but not on beach road. With a car, everything is very close. Room was very comfortable and spacious. Only complaint is that the sheets were worst quality and not enough linens provided for pull out sofa bed.
Full fridge was great for breakfast and lunch supplies - for a beach picnic- and to keep our Chill beer cold.
Best infinity pool is literally 7 steps from your door- all rooms share . Each room has little private area , in front of pool, for nightcap or coffee time .
Brilliant area , at pool, to talk with neighbors and if you're lucky- the owners. Alexandra will be there for anything you need- she's so friendly and helpful.
Wifi only works in front of property and parking is provided . Grocery store few blocks away.
Writing this review makes me miss this place- I will def be back!!! -

Four ladies left the cold weather behind and couldn't have asked for better weather in aruba. This was our first visit to Cunacu Residence. We loved it. Peaceful relaxing and clean. I'm very happy the owners were there. John and Eleanor are so helpful and made our vacation. Introducing us to the best places to visit. If you take a cab around, I suggest asking for Roy and his lovely wife. I recommend a car to go to the beach or see the sights. The people in aruba are very friendly. One Happy Island.
I'm planning another girls week next year at Cunucu Residence.

Just returned from a week away with girlfriends. The property is very well maintained. John and Eleanor (owners) went above and beyond to make sure we were confortable and had everything we needed. Henk (property manager) and Gloria were also very attentive. If we desired they would have arranged car rental, excursions etc. We prearranged to have some drinks/groceries to be in unit upon our arrival. No problems with Wifi. A cell phone was provided for local calls (excellent idea)! We all enjoyed the tranquility of the location. The infinity pool was just steps outside our back door. Taxi to high rise area (hotels and beach) is only $6us. No need for us to rent a car. We made a deal with our regular taxi driver for a tour. We had a great time and would return to the Cunucu Residence again.

Cunucu Residence - March 9 - April 6, 2012
Firstly, Thank you John & Eleanor for creating such a beautiful vacation spot and allowing others to enjoy it too!
We spent 4 weeks here in unit 7 and would definitely return without any hesitation what so ever. We would also highly recommend Cunucu Residence to anyone who wants to do things at their own pace without having to make a reservation, line up for this or that or worry about getting a chair by the pool.
We rented a car for our stay, which we do recommend, so alexandra picked us up at the airport and she was right there waiting for us when we came through the doors, no hassles at all and we were quickly on our way. The little car we did rent (KIa Picanto) met our needs, in my opinion it was in need of a few minor mechanical repairs but the aC worked good and it never let us down.
The accommodations were excellent, except for the safe, it was not working and was not repaired while we were there but other then that we really have no complaints. The kitchen has everything you need, there is aC in every room and it does work great so you can turn it off when you leave and back on when you come back. The unit itself was very clean and kept that way by Jalayla, the house keeper for the property, she is awesome. Fresh towels every 2 days, bedding changed once a week and the unit was mopped everyday. Thanks for all your hard work, you do a great job.
Although one thing that was a surprise to us that we quickly got used to was the lack of heated water. You see, Aruba's water pipes are all above ground so there is no "cold" water like we have in Canada but with no water heater there is no "hot" water either, it's a happy medium. As long as the sun is out the water is OK but we had a few days of cloud and some rain so the water was a little on the cool side sometimes, it was like pool temperature. If you went from the pool right into the shower you were OK but if you got right in the shower after a day at the beach it seemed a little cold. You do get used to it and it's really not as bad as you might be thinking but it is a surprise if you don't know about it before hand. In my opinion it is no reason to avoid staying here.
Every unit has its own little patio by the pool with privacy fencing between them. The pool is large and there are lots of chairs and shady areas around the deck if you want one. Beach towels are readily available by the pool and there was never a shortage of them, just grab them on the way by and throw them in the laundry basket when you are finished with them. Having access to a BBQ is awesome, relax, have a Balashi or 4 and grill up your dinner in your swim suit. It doesn't get much better! At night when the lights are on around the pool area it is very "resort" like but without all the "resort" people. There were not too many biting bugs, and they do love me for some reason but there are some at times so I did get a few bites but my wife didn't get any.
Cable TV is included and we had a nice 42" LCD TV in our unit. Free Wi-Fi is available on the property, it did go down once in awhile, not sure if it was the Cunucu System or the Island System, my guess is the Island System, it was never really a big deal for us as we just tried later and it worked.
There are loads of grocery stores so it's just like home and the prices are some what comparable to home, you just have to know your prices and try to pay attention when things get rung in. All the grocery stores took credit cards, which we preferred because sometimes you get your change back in Florens. The store prices were displayed in Florens but some of the stores also show it in dollars if you look at the smaller print on the tags. There is a store by the airport called Price Smart, (it's like a Costco or Sam's Club) we were told near the end of our four weeks that if you take your passport in and show them they will give tourists a special pass for shopping. We never tried it but had we known at the beginning of our stay we would have, you might want to check this out if you are going for an extended period of time, we will next time.
We spent a lot of time at the different beaches, Arashi and Boca Catalina are both very close, like 5 mins at the most. Palm beach is about 10 minutes and Eagle beach is just a little further still. Baby beach is at the other end of the Island so it is about 30 minutes, if you don't get lost that is. We did walk from Cunucu Residence to the Palm Beach Plaza one day and it took us about 45 minutes to get there. Lots of great restaurants to choose from and John's list has that all covered pretty well.
Once again, thanks for sharing your little Oasis with the rest of us and thanks to Henk & Alexandra for all the little things.

Very relaxing, quiet with no surprises. Everything was as we expected. The outdoor pool was a perfect size for doing laps or just lounging. The onsite management, Henk and alexandra were great. They gave us directions for whatever we needed along with great information about the island. A car is a must with map. We can't wait to come back and this will be the place we will stay.

The place was bigger then we expected. Very nice furnishings, beautiful pool and patio area. Manager and housekeeper very friendly. Only thing I wish they would have told us prior to renting is that the shower and indoor water is solor heated. We had no hot water during our stay there. Cold showers not fun. They also have no telephones in the rooms. It was also not told to us that they required a security deposit upon check-in.
Response from John Paisley - 01/13/2012
Owner
Thank you for your kind works regarding the Cunucu Residence. In regards to the telephones, we have since purchased cell phones that can be used throughout the Island during your stay. As for the security deposit, this is done through a credit card, where we put a $100 hold on the card and when you check out, if there is no damage or items missing we void the transaction. This is typical hotel policy.
Thanks,
Management -

We spent one week of honeymoon at the end august at the beautiful cunucu residence. We initially missed our original flight to aruba and henk and john still accomodated us with no additional costs! Which was great for us after expensive wedding costs. Our room was comfortable spacious and clean, with all the necessary amenities. The infinity pool was well maintained and a great way to relax and chill for the evening. Henk and alexandra were always present to assist us with whatever we needed. The hotel is a short ten minute drive from the gorgeous beaches and downtown shopping. My husband and i would definitely stay at cunucu residence again.

We started oour first visit (2 weeks)to aruba with a short 15 minute drive from the airport and we were relaxing in the Cunucu Residence infinity pool. Our 1 bedroom (Unit #3)was spacious and very clean. Managers alexandra and Henk (+Christopher)were very helpful and attended to all our needs.Car rental was also straightforward. A list of local restuarants provided by the owner was also very helpful. Shopping was also very accessible from our location as was beaches, nightlife and sightseeing. The weather is digital (85-90'F & sunny)with a beautiful trade wind drifting across the island. Our stay was full of island exploring, swimming at several beaches, snorkelling at Baby Beach & the natural pool and four wheeling the entire west coast including arikok Park. After busy days we would return to the solitude of our "Residence" and enjoy a swim/BBQ or got out for dinner.
We would like to thank alexandra & Henk (Managers) and Eleanor & John (Owners) for all their assistance before and during our lovely stay on "One Happy Island", Aruba. -

Left on 12/02/2011 for a stay in November 2011
The apartments are spacious, well-furnished and well kept. Our hosts, Henk and alexandra, were very friendly and helpful. The patio and pool area were very clean and offered a teriffic view of the surrounding area. Don't forget to check out the set of stairs in front that leads to a viewing area on the roof, which gives you an even nicer panoramic view. A car rental is a must, if you want to go anywhere. Arashi Beach is less than a 3 minute ride, as well as a few other beaches and the California Lighthouse. The Palm Beach/Hi-Rise Hotel area is less than 8 minutes away, and Oranjestat is about 15 minutes away, depending on the Downtown traffic. Most of the shops open at 10 am, so you want to get there by then so that you can find a parking space. We met the owner, John, who happened to be at the Canucu Residence, staining new adirondeck Chairs that he had purchased for the patio and pool area. If you want to visit aruba and don't want to stay in a busy tourist area, or just simply want a laid back vacation, or want to try living as a local would live, this is the place to stay. It is a charming setting that offers a lot of peace and solitude. A nice feature is that there are no back yard neighbors. The rear of the property overlooks an area with vegetation and low brush. Remember though, you are in aruba, and as is the case with most islands in the Carribean, if you decide to live "like an aruban", and not like a typical tourist, be prepared to hear roosters in the morning...lol.

Prior to our trip to aruba in July, we were full of anticipation but John was most helpful with our pre-trip arrangements.
During our stay in aruba, Henk, our host, and his family provided us with valuable insights to acclimatize us with the culture and what traps to avoid.
At the Canucu Residence, we found the rooms to be large, bright, clean and very relaxing. The pool was steps away from the room and readily available. Everything from the complex was close especially the beaches, the restaurants and the downtown area.
Our trip was very relaxing and enjoyable thanks to everyone mentioned. What an interesting country and with a car you can see everything. -

Aruba, Cunucu Residence - May 8 to May 15, 2010. The first thing that the Jamaloodin family said was welcome home. When we contacted John before our first trip here, we told him that we were looking for the ultimate vacation. A relaxing and comfotable home away from home, we can honestly say that we have found it. We will definitely be coming to the Cunucu Residence on a yearly basis, next will be the summer of 2011, if not sooner. The ultimate vacation would be to get the whole family there and take over the whole place, that will happen one day. We learned more about the island this time and will continue to learn more with each visit. John & Eleanor have come up with a list of local restaurants to visit which really helped out a lot, we visited a few of them and the food & prices were great. We continue to recommend this vacation to one and all and once again a big Thank You to Henk, Alex & Kris for their hospitality. Can't wait to get back there and drink that great tap water.

When we found out that our timeshare could not accomidate us for the whole time we were spending in aruba we started to look for another place to stay for just under a week. It was easy to contact the owner, the live-in caretakers were wonderful, the setting is fantastic. Great value for my money. It is a little out of the way but after two days its easy to find. Only a few rooms so not a lot of people around at the time and we enjoyed that. Access to a BBQ and sitting area around the pool. A/C works good. My overall experience was wonderful, and I would recommend it at once over some of the hotels on the hotel zone.
