In 1957 when architect William Krisel and Alexander Construction Company were developing the mid-century neighborhood of Sunmor, they selected this 1/3 acre lot for the estate showhome to attract buyers. With no neighbors on three sides of the house and panoramic 180 degree views of the San Jacinto Mountains unobstructed by buildings or power lines, you will agree they could not have chosen a more singular, stunning piece of land.
This house is a classic Krisel 3-bedroom, 2 bathroom butterfly design, which has the benefit of an added sitting room off the master to take full advantage of the mountain view when you wake up or use the desk... as an office should you have to bring your laptop with you!
The home has been restored with hand laid slate throughout, including custom slate showers in both bathrooms. The updated kitchen includes new granite counters, a gas range and a large stainless-steel refrigerator perfect for chilling 5 o'clock cocktails and Kitchen Aid dishwasher. There is also a Espresso machine, coffee maker and French Pressall to better enjoy your morning coffee!
Many of the furnishings are period or period reproduction like an Euro Saarinen marble topped dining table with blue Eames dining chairs, iconic Bertoia chairs and a Saarinen side table. A large, 9 foot sectional couch allows you and your family to pile on together to cozy up and watch TV. The living room has a new Sony 46 inch HD LCD TV and the master and second bedrooms both have wall mounted 40 inch high definition LCD TVs. The house features Wi FI, unlimited long distance in North America and a front loading high efficiency washer and dryer all for your added convenience.
An outdoor dining set, conversation table with armchairs and loungers add to the period vibe. A heated saltwater swimming pool and bocce court offer kids and adults year round outdoor entertaining. There is also a new Char Broil commercial BBQ.
This tucked away private neighborhood is very low key with no traffic since there are no through roads: all the better for casually wandering and admiring the restored mid century classic homes. For 11 days each year during Palm Springs Modernism Week, the coveted neighborhood of Sunmor a key stop on the city's mid-century tour bustles with eager architectural pilgrims. This is one of the best preserved mid century neighborhoods in Palm Springs. History buffs will also note that just outside the private fence facing south on Easmor Circle, the historic Tie Down monument from World War II, maintained by the City, provides a little slice of Palm Springs history right on the property. Meanwhile, the off-leash dog park is right down the street by City Hall for those who have brought their four legged friends with them.
On Saturdays from September to June, simply walk a couple blocks away to the Farmers Market, behind the Camelot Theaters, for freshly squeezed orange juice and bread. Add the historic City Hall, designed in part by famed mid century architect Albert Frey, to your list do not forget to read the Frey art book at the house before you go. The U.Ks delightful Fresh and Easy Neighborhood Market, think a small, low priced version of Whole Foods is just down the street and downtown is a four minute drive. Palm Springs is small, but in this location you have the best of both worlds: you are close to the airport although you wont hear planes due to strict flight paths, downtown and all its restaurants grab coffee in the courtyard at Koffi on North Palm Canyon and museums park in the parking lot at the Modern Art Museum and hike up the back of the mountain with a picnic lunch. Don't forget the downtown street festival, Village fest, every Thursday night perfect for families or couples.
This house is the second home for our family of four and we hope it feels like that for you. We both work at magazines and so have chosen its contents meaningfully from the art on our walls like the 9 foot original painting by artist Ian MacLeod to Designers Guild pillows. It is all based on what we like, not based on what you should do for a rental. Sunmor Estates is truly one of the friendliest, quietest and most architecturally preserved neighborhoods in Palm Springs and a great place to soak up the Palm Springs vibe.
