Los AngelesWe loved this house
Left on 04/12/2013 for a stay in April 2013
We loved our stay. First---We have stayed at a number of homes and condos in Palm Springs and most we have stayed at are unique and interesting. With this home, our group had a blast...a great party home and great for a single couple or group or a family. There were three separate master bedrooms, each with a king bed, and each offered something different--one had a fireplace and opening onto a deck, one had a great view and a wild bathroom, one had a bigger room and more privacy and opened onto a jacuzzi. We planned to go out more at night, but we found we stayed at the house. We did a number of bbq nights out on the deck, and the house had a number of different "destinations" that were private so that each of us (three couples) had somewhere private to go to when we weren't doing something together (at the very private pool, at the hammock under the deck, on the deck overlooking the city, at the jacuzzi). No, the kitchen wasn't huge---but I don't think they built it as such (to my recollection homes build in PS during that period of time were smaller and a lot of catering was done)---but it was fine for our needs (six of us and we made great meals each day). Each bedroom had a large screen TV with preprogrammed shows you could quickly call up--they have an early feed of East Coast networks--don't ask me how), so all shows could be watched 3 hours earlier) hence NBC Nightly News could be viewed at 3:30PM, or Saturday Night Live could be seen at 8:30PM). There was also a TV in the kitchen and in one of the bedrooms.
The pool (with a diving board) was great and we spent most of our days there...and I saw something about the pool chairs not being great but they obviously must have been redone since then as everything is new.
This is a mid century modern home, and the home was nestled against a great hillside and had a fantastic view from the desk as it was not nestled on the flatlands.
Bottom line, we loved it, and will go back.

186274Just the place to fall in love, and we did
Left on 02/15/2012 for a stay in September 2011
We arrived in the dark having had the most dreadful time getting our rental car (we'd booked a Volvo Convertable) from Hertz at lax having flown in from England. It took them three hours to get it ready!! So you can imagine that we were exhausted, in fact my girlfriend ended up sleeping an hour or so on the way.
We finally picked up the keys from the wonderful Palm Springs Rentals and made our way to the house. We went down one wrong drive to a very spooky property nearby but escaped without harm.
On opening the door and turning on the lights the weight just dropped from our shoulders. We slung our cases in the bedroom, broke open the vodka and tonic, got undressed and sat outside under the stars. All was perfect quiet until a pack of coyotes came past howling at each other, we didn't hear them again during our stay. When the drinks were finished we wandered off to bed where we slept like logs.
Morning came and so did the sheer beauty of this slightly time-worn old building. It has such a wonderful ambience seeming so welcoming to us and our occasional visitors.
Time was spent, seven days, relaxing and chatting punctuated by visits to the pool. Being served my drink by a very beautiful lady swimming across the pool with the drinks on a blow-up ring has to be something I'll never forget.. I would point out here that, because the property is completely private, clothes become an option and we hardly used any of ours while there. In fact my girlfriend accidentally gave the gardeners quite a treat when they arrived one morning.
We used the BBQ and we even got the ancient 50s gas ring going to boil water for cups of tea. When, oh when are americans going to realise that a kettle is needed to boil water for tea??
We ended up using all three bedrooms in an effort to find the coolest because with 44DegC temperatures the aC was having big problems. However we coped and finally discovered that we should ignore the aC instructions about not turning it down too much because of freezing the compressor. We turned it right down to 18DegC at night and the house never went much above 28DegC during the day then.
We never used the TV and sound system, preferring to take the iPod dock outside onto the terrace and just chill.
I also found a little time for business as well and even that turned out better than expected.
This property feels as though it's haunted by a very friendly spirit as everywhere we went in it seemed so warm and welcoming. This is hardly surprising given the amount of fun that this place must have seen over the years. I hope we contributed a bit to the ambiance as well.
I can't recommend this house enough. We stayed for a magical seven days getting to know each other better and generally slobbing out.
There was another plus to our trip. When we got back to Heathrow we said goodbye to each other and went our separate ways. During the few days we were apart before seeing each other again I felt something had passed between us but wasn't sure whether the same applied to my girlfriend.
We met up for drinks and a night out in London and as we were sipping our first drink I blurted out "did something happen between us in Palm Springs?" her reply was "Oh my God yes it did, I love you". The rest as they say is history and we're going back again in the spring. Neither of us can wait. -

I used this house for a work/play week with two friends.
The character, privacy and quirkiness of this house make it unique. In a rather small space you actually have 3 separate levels which provide lots of privacy and multiple options throughout the day. The pool area is away from the house downhill, with a great canvas cabana that I used as an outdoor office several days during our week stay (yes, the WiFi worked down at the pool). The pool area is surrounded by 20 ft high flowering oleander and the view back up the mountainside is stunning. In fact, you can look straight up at the "Bambi and Thumper" house from the James Bond movie Diamonds are Forever. More than a dozen mexican fan palms on the property in groups of two are stunning in the breeze, lit at night.
We ate 6 of 7 nights out on the deck using the BBQ -- the restaurants in the desert are notoriously mediocre (especially for those of us from SF) -- which was absolutely lovely.
The house is "vintage" in so many ways. That's the great and the bad. But we just made the necessary adjustments and loved the experience. -

The house was accurately described by the rental agency. It was clean and well kept and our family really enjoyed our stay there. Palm Springs Rental were great. They even mailed back my daughter's cell phone that she left behind [thanks Ian!]. I would reccomend the property to others.

San DiegoMellow Mid-Century Magic
Left on 07/12/2010 for a stay in April 2010
We've stayed here two years running for Coachella - sure the kitchen is small and gorgeous original, mid-century fixtures and applicances but if your idea of a "swank" place is granite countertops then move on., This place is magical, it can tell some stories and because of that stories are made here - the upstairs balcony is perfect for grilling and watching the sun set over the San Jacinto mountains. The architecture and the landscaping ensure total privacy and quiet - sure it could have outdoor speakers, etc. but we have absolutely no complaints. We love the history of the place, the location and the vibe.

Over all, our review is positive, from check in to check out.
The extra expenses were unexpected, even if they were mentioned, making the over all cost, almost a turn off.
This property did allow the space and comfort needed for a great vacation however. -

South Pasadena, CAWonderful House, great pool!
Left on 02/13/2009 for a stay in January 2008
The house was fantastic. Also, the staff at the rental site was great. I was running late and they were very accomidating. The view from the living room is beautiful and one of the bedrooms has a fireplace...very cozy! This is a great place for a weekend getaway for 2 or for a few couples to spend some time. The light switches are all in the floor which is very unique. (Due to Howard Hughes fear of germs I think) The driveway is steep, which was the only difficult part. If you have an SUV or very large car, you may need to park on the street, but that worked just fine for us.

This truly is a hideaway. If you want privacy it's here. But if you're looking for real luxury, this isn't the place. Furnishings are adequate (except for the pool loungers that were falling apart), but other things aren't the greatest, like sliding doors that won't completely close (or truly lock--security concern), very small dated kitchen, an awkward metal spiral staircase to access the master bedroom, and a bedroom with awesome views that doesn't really have a door. Yes, the views from the house are incredible. Pool is very nice size. So, a mixed bag. Might be best for a weekend, but not an extended stay.

Left on 02/03/2009 for a stay in August 2006
I rented this vacation home for the weekend for my brother's 28th birthday. We invited some friends to stay with us and had a great time. It was the perfect place to bbq, have drinks, lie in the sun and hang out. We really enjoyed our time there and the mid century modern decor was also a plus.

Birmingham, ALCan we move in permanently?
Left on 02/03/2009 for a stay in February 2007
My husband & I were intrigued by the pictures, and the star-studded list of previous owners. We found the house to be surprisingly homey, and absolutely perfect in every way.
The furnishing are wonderful, but the decks, backyard & pool areas make the house! Not to mention all the wildlife, the night-time view of downtown and the mountains. We cannot wait to return! -

Very private with lovely pool area. Nice breezes which made the heat bearable. The TV and DVD's were great with satellite in all rooms. The kitchen was in need of work and we ate out everynight. Washer/tumbler was outside which really freaked me out. I would consider staying again but the kitchen does put me off a little. The downstairs bedroom was private but not for the elderly as there are a lot of steps in this villa.
