Self-catering accommodation at Papatowai in the heart of the Catlins right at the sea side with views to the sea and easy access to the sandy beach, estuary and native forest walks. Unit one (Kereru cabin) is a studio unit set up as a double or as two singles. Unit two (Tironui) is a two bedroomed flat with one double bed and two singles.

Papatowai is a central location in the Catlins, the only place where the Southern Scenic Route meets the sea. Very scenic estuary, beach, forest and ocean views with a range of great walks through native forest and along the coast. Less than 30 minute drive to Catheral caves, Lake Wilkie, McLean, Matai and Purakaunui Falls; Less than 45 minutes to Catlins River Track, Surat Bay, Nugget Point, Curio Bay petrified forest.
Papatowai is on the Southern Scenic Route half an hour by car south of Owaka and 2 hours from either Invercargill or Dunedin airports. The township has a shop with fuel available. 'Bottom Bus' and 'Catlins Coaster' provide transport links to and from Dunedin and Invercargill.

Stayed for three days at the end of January 2013. The location was excellent (a short walk to the beach) and the view was good, although the roof obstructed much of it from one window when seated. The kitchen and associated kit was as expected in this sort of place, but the fridge lacked an ice box which was a pain. The worst aspect was the queen bed, which was very soft and lacking in support.

We stayed in the 2br upstairs unit at Papatowai for 4 nights in December 2012. The accommodation was comfortable. The dining area is very small (there is a microwave but no oven) and the unit has no lounge/living area. However the unit is in a wonderful spot overlooking the estuary and ocean, with direct access down a track to the beach. Fergus and Mary were great hosts and extremely helpful, providing invaluable local advice. The absolute highlight of our stay was a 1 day guided wildlife walk with Fergus. We cannot recommend the walk highly enough. At the end of it, we enjoyed a lovely dinner with other guests at Mohua Park, their other property.

Easy to find accomodation, in quiet village, with a very small shop. Buy food at a bigger village if you don't like surprises.
Beautiful view, no need for a television. Seperate bedrooms, good kitchen. Very clean, so enjoy.Response from Fergus and Mary Sutherland - 12/07/2012

A cleverly designed house with all mod cons - perfect for a short-term stay. Comfort, quiet, lovely views, games, books and a good bed inside and walks from the front door enough to keep one busy for a couple of days. Then there is the rest of the Catlins to explore in both directions!
Fergus is a delight, unfortunately Mary was away so we didn't meet her.
