Our group was made up of three generations of our family - 2 adults, 2 teenagers and 2 grandparents. The grandparents were in the 2 bedroom apartment upstairs, and the four of us stayed in The Grange. Facilities in the Grange were very good, every imaginable kitchen utensil, plently of crockery, barbeque, wi-fi, iPod dock on TV and plenty of plug sockets. We couldn't have been happier with the holiday. The weather is changeable in France, but we were lucky and only had 2 days of light rain. The property was well stocked, and traditionally decorated. It could maybe have been a little cleaner, but it was definitely homely. We were greeted warmly, and the hosts even booked a meal for us on the first night when we couldn't get to the supermarket. They were lovely people. and always cheerful. The area is remote, but SuperU, the local supermarket, stocks everything you need for a self catering holiday. You need to have a car with you to enjoy the area really, you can walk into Parcay Les Pins but there's not an awful lot there. There's a tennis court at the bottom of the road, which is open to the public. The pool is brill, oxygenated so chlorine doesn't burn your eyes and throat. Our next door neighbours were ponies and chickens! Would be a brilliant safe area for people with young children. The Gites are close enough to feel communal, but private enough to have your own space which is a major bonus. Would definitely reccomend this rental!
Places to Visit.. The tank museum (better than we expected and good for a rainy day), the chateau at gizeux, big lake with a steam train on Sundays (sorry, can't remember what it's called but i'm sure the hosts will know).Response from Alison Jean Brookes - 09/17/2012

Thank you for the lovely review. The steam train is at Lac Rillé and worth the visit, as is the nature reserve and bird hide at the other side of the lake. It's a visiting place for migratory birds too.
We always take cleanliness very seriously and do a lot of 'unseen' work to make sure everything is hygienic for our guests. An old property never looks as pristine as a new build, but we steam clean all the bathrooms,, regularly change the pillows, use a UV cleaner for the furniture throughout the properties and provide freshly laundered pure cotton bedding.
We thought you were such a well organised and active family of 3 generations and enjoyed some interesting reminiscences with your family too. We would love to see you back again here too.

What a wonderful place to stay. All the little extra's are provided for, making for a magical holiday. My three children fell in love with the ponies at the bottom of the garden. We will be back!

We stayed with Mike and Jean at Les Mortiers with a group of 8 adults. We originally had only reserved two of the three units for the 8 of us but Mike and Jean graciously allowed us to have all three units we had the entire complex. Mike and Jean are gracious and fantastic hosts. All of the accomodations are comfortable and clean. Although we were not traveling with children the facilities would be perfect for families looking for a nice getaway. We explored a new area of the Loire daily. The location of Les Mortiers has that country charm. Numerous attractions and more populated towns are within a 45 minute drive in any direction. We spent a lot of time exploring but could see how the place could be relaxing to just "chill out" around the pool if you so choose. If you are looking for lots of activity and nightife this is probably not your first choice...if you are seeking a relaxed atmosphere in the French Countryside with wonderful hosts you wont be dissapointed. Jean is an avid gardener and Mike has an amazing craft making custom silk fly fishing line...you can just imagine the picture!!!

Thank you for such a lovely review.
What a delightful group of friends you all are. We enjoyed sharing Les Mortiers with you and hearing each day about your different adventures in our part of France.
We were delighted that you enjoyed the day at Le Tasting Room to discover Loire wines, but sorry that your time passed too quickly for your Talent Evening to take place. -

Original, rustic, comfortable, wonderful pool and nothing is too much trouble. Mike and Jean have created a superb 'home from home' and we are due for our 5th year in a row in 2012. Not so sure we want to let anyone know about this treasure in case you book our week the following year!

Thank you for a wonderful holiday at Les Mortiers. We have just returned from our second two week holiday having had a fantastic time. The accommodation is lovely, very comfortable with all that you need. We enjoyed Bbq's in the evening, swimming in the amazing pool and just wondering around the grounds feeding the chickens, watching ponies and playing on the swings. Our children (1 and 3 years) think it is the best place for a holiday, as do we. There is so much to do in the area, it really is a ideal base for lots of sight seeing. Our favourites have been Terra Botanica, Zoo Doue and Zoo Fleche, the Bourgueil market trips, Chateau azay le Rideau, Villandry, Chanonceau and Breze. A real highlight of the holiday was celebrating our anniversary at Le Manoir de Restigne. We had an amazing meal and the staff were ever so welcoming to our two children. We are now home and enjoying all our wine purchases which we had a great time choosing visiting small family run caves and tasting their selection. We can not wait to return in the future.

We loved our stay at Les Mortiers. The cottage was clean, comfortable and quiet. The Brookes are wonderful and accomodating--we were even able to pick fresh veggies from Jean's garden for our dinner. Les Mortiers is close to everything you need for a relaxing holiday but far enough away for peace & quiet.

We arrived by train to the beautiful Loire Valley and the tranquility of Les Mortiers. Being the first guests without our own transport has been interesting but 'do-able' as taking in the fantastic scenery on bikes has been a great way to get out and about and highly recommended! The market at Bourgueil (on Tuesday morning) was fantastic and we bought many beautiful, juicy, fanciful fruit and cakes (of course!!). Saumur is also a must for anyone visiting here and the Loire provides a great back drop for creating the perfect photo image — we took many!! As for Jean and mike - the words Fantastic! Wonderful! Delightful! Perfect! Certainly spring to mind. Nothing and we mean nothing has been too much trouble for them. They have made our holiday here at Les Mortiers absolutely, without question, truly idyllic! We thank you both from the bottom of our hearts! With much love and sincere gratitude to you both. We love Fifi! (the 2CV)

We were delighted that the almost car-free holiday worked out so well.
There is a great network of cycle rides around us, plan d'eau and lakes to visit with good picnic areas, quiet roads and safe forest tracks.
The village epicerie is now run by a young couple who have extended the range of foods available and there are two market gardens for fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as some from our own potager, all which help to make it easier to be less reliant on using a car, yet stay in the countryside. -

We were fortunate enough to visit the Loire Valley but the accommodation at Les Mortiers topped off the trip for us. It was lovely, peaceful, very well equipped and clean. I would like to go back for a relaxing week without doing any sight seeing. I would fully recommend this accommodation. Jean and Mike were very helpful and very nice people. Our children were also made to feel very welcome and they were free to wonder the grounds safely.

We had a fantastic holiday and Les Mortiers was exactly what we hoped for. The accommodation had everything we needed and more - all the extras included for babies/children were particularly useful with our 1 year old daughter.
Jean and Mike were always friendly and helpful and made us feel very welcome.
We loved the property and location - a quiet, relaxed enviroment but within easy reach of local towns and attractions. It was nice to cycle to the boulangerie for fresh bread and croissants every morning!
We were sad to leave and look forward to staying again.Response from Alison Jean Brookes - 07/03/2011

Overall a really wonderful stay in a beautiful, idilic, quiet traditional French Country Cottage.
The accomadation is spacious with everything you need and more! A real feel of home from home.
The cottage is set around fields, with horses and donkeys passing the window of the lounge. The lounge has 2 comfy sofas, a wonderful log fire. It opens out onto a lovely back garden area - unfortunately apart from feeding the horses we didnt get to sit out and take in the gorgeous views our stay was over the Xmas period. Brrr. The bedrooms are large and have the softest Egyptian cotton to snuggle beneath on the comfiest beds to sink into after a bottle or 3 of wine by the fire.
The owners of the property live on site and honestly cannot do more for you in terms of making sure every need is catered for. The provide you with any bits of shopping you haven't managed to pick up, they have wine on site that is better than any wine you fine in the supermarket as it is locally sourced. The restaurant suggestions they gave were outstanding. If you want to be left in peace, they do, but if you need to ask for anything its never a bother.
The local vineyards are a must to visit. All the large Loire towns are easily accessable by car. Chinon was a favourite! There is a little local bar to get a pint and a bakers with the best pan au chocolates ever.
If your after a relaxing, comfatable, over indulgent break away from everything then I would highly recommend it.
We will go back ... maybe in the summer to take advantage of the gorgeous 'heated' pool we seen right next to gite and sit outside and take in the freshness of the countryside form the garden.
