Left on 07/20/2011 for a stay in July 2011
I was travelling with two 11 year old girls and my husband, so we needed a place that slept 4. More importantly I really wanted to stay in the Montmartre area. If you are looking at this apartment you might already know that this area is a maze of gorgeous little cobblestone streets, with lovely restaurants on every corner. From this apartment it is an eight minute walk up to the glorious Sacre Coeur, with spectacular views of Paris both day and night. Place du Tertre is not to be missed for its crush of artists and cafes. Go over to Pigalle and see the Moulin Rouge. Catch the subway at anvers and be at the Louvre, Eiffel Tower or arc de Triomphe in minutes or at Berbes-Rochechouart and be at Notre Dame in the same amount of time. Yes, there are alot of tourists and Souvenir shops in the area, but that is because you have come to exactly the right place where they all want to be. Plus the competition makes getting your keep sakes as reasonable as it would be if you bought them from the open cases on the Seine. There are also some shops that sell very nice, authentically handcrafted jewellery and clothing at reasonable prices, so that you do not have to go to the outrageously expensive Gallery Lafayette (except to see the Wedding Cake interior and go to the Gourmet Shop).
The people at Sweetkey and I corresponded mostly by email, including dealing with the signing of the contract entirely electronically. I paid the reasonable downpayment via Paypal. I only had to call long distance once. The person who answered spoke perfect english.
Upon arrival we were met promptly at the apartment by the lovely Brigitte, who answered all our questions in impeccable English. We were pleased that there was a small, but adequate elevator to take our luggage to the third floor.
For a mere 16 euros more than we were going to pay for a two star, postage stamp hotel room we got a full kitchen with a dishwasher, washing machine, stove, oven, microwave, fridge, freezer, toaster and coffeemaker all of which worked perfectly. All that was missing for tea drinkers was a kettle, but boiling water on the gas stove worked just as well.
The kitchen was worth its weight in gold because we could buy exquisite pastries at a nearby Patisserie and have them augmented by scrambled eggs, potato home fries, orange juice etc. in the morning so that we could quickly launch ourselves into our daily itinerary. There is a Carrefour on Rochechouart, and early and late convenience stores with fresh produce the way it only tastes in France, right on the Square.
At night we lingered over glasses of wine and cheese and talked about what we had seen in this fabulous city and planned for tomorrow. Mostly we dined at one of the four restaurants right on the square or at our favourite Le Durer on Yvonne le Tac.
The girls sometimes wanted to breakfast at the perfect little kitchen table, but on the nights when we had dinner in or sat and relaxed at the end of the day there is a large dining room area that you can make as formal as you would like.
The windows in the kitchen and bedroom open to a pretty view of the courtyard which was always quiet. Those in the dining room/living room opened to the lovely Place Charles Dullin with its double row of trees. The through breeze ensured that we slept comfortably. If you sleep in the Murphy bed, with the windows closed the street noise disappears - if you leave them open, simply bring earplugs for the same effect.
The living room was comfortable and with a little rearrangement of the chairs and stools there was a place for everyone to sit and relax. I particularly enjoyed getting up before everyone else and having my tea while sitting in one of the tub chairs in the front window. I could watch the poor tourist souls below, searching for a place to have breakfast, while the smell of mine already cooking wafted from the kitchen.
The WiFi computer on the premises worked after a few false starts - you merely have to have enough french to override the warnings that it does not want to go to your Gmail and you are off to the races. The girls used the WiFi to access the internet on their iPods. The television would not receive a signal, and despite Brigitte's best efforts that did not get fixed. All we wanted was the News at the end of the day anyway; we figured out how to watch it on the computer so really no loss.
The shower however was another issue. It had to be cajoled in to spraying with enough pressure and during the time of one shower it would gradually lose pressure until you had to tweak the handle a little more. That is the sole reason that this lovely, large, perfectly located apartment does not get an Excellent rating for Comfort.
