PRESENTATION OF THE MONTPARNASSE QUARTER
Centrally located and easily accessible, the Montparnasse district promises a day of relaxation and a fun evening.
Shopping and evenings in Paris
Stroll through the streets; enjoy cultural visits or even some shopping at the foot of the tower where you will find the great shopping center Galeries Lafayette. Theatres and museums as well as bars, brasseries (La Coupole, La Closerie des Lilas...) and night clubs or cabarets (Bobin'o) are all within walking distance.
Montparnasse: a historic and lively quarter in Paris
Montparnasse is still as lively as ever and attracts an international crowd.
A popular, active neighbourhood, its train station was once the gateway to Paris for Bretons from Brittany who came to seek their fortune in the capital.
Montparnasse: an artistic quarter
Until the 1940s, painters, writers and poets belonging to the "Ecole de Paris movement" found here inexpensive lodging and workshops, the most famous being "La Ruche".
The artists formed a community, near the publishing houses of the Boulevard Saint Germain and the art dealers of the Luxembourg district.
Several museums are dedicated to the district's artist communities: the Zadkine, Bourdelle and Montparnasse museums.
If you wish to follow in the footsteps of Gauguin, Picasso, Modigliani, Max Jacob, Henry Miller and many more, you can also step into their lives by discovering their favourite neighbourhood.
Stroll down the rue Grande-Chaumière and Campagne-Première or the boulevard Raspail, home to many artists' workshops. Stop in at the "La Coupole" brasserie (102 bd du Montparnasse) where the décor has remained unchanged. And be sure to visit the Montparnasse cemetery, a veritable museum of open-air sculpture, where Baudelaire is buried.
If you prefer contemporary architecture, don't miss the Place de Catalogne by Ricardo Bofill, the Jardin de l'Atlantique set up on a platform above the railway tracks, not to mention the Fondation Cartier for contemporary art designed by Jean Nouvel.
