Description from the owner

High on a cliff overlooking the sea, Essex Cottage commands one of Tobago’s finest views of the Caribbean in one direction and the Rain Forrest Reserve in the other. Overlooking the garden, the porch of the cottage offers a spectacular view of the sea. From the verandas or infinity pool, guests can enjoy the mesmerizing crashing of waves against the rocks, daily migrations of frigate birds as they cruise along the coast, or listen to the cries of the cocricos, chatter of the parrots, and songs of other isla...Read more

      Absolutely wonderful location

Left on 05/10/2012 for a stay in May 2012

I stayed at Essex Cottage with my mother and sister for 6 days. The self-catering accomodation is well kitted out - all you could want/need is provided. It is situated on the top of a hill overlooking stunning gardens with coconut, banana and papaya trees amongst much other foliage, with so many birds visiting (hummingbirds and parrots were a real treat!), and a beautiful waterfall at the end of the garden, leading into the Caribbean sea. There's also a great infinity pool and sunbathing deck, where you literally feel like you are in the midst of tropical jungle. It was pretty idyllic, we just wish we had had longer to stay! We were very well looked after by Reggie, the property manager, and hired a car to explore the island further. Nearby, I would recommend visiting the stunning Englishman's bay (about a 5min drive away) or Parletuvier - a small but very pretty village just down the hill. One afternoon Reggie arranged a fishing trip for us with andre, a local fisherman, who helped up catch kingfish, tuna and redfish before seasoning the catch and grilling it for us back at the cottage. We would definitely recommend booking a trip with andre when you stay. Castara is a another lovely town nearby with a few good restaurants and bars. Avoid the heavily tourist end of the island and head north-west to laid-back, beautiful and peaceful Essex Cottage!

Delightful hosts and a spectacular setting!

Left on 09/28/2011 for a stay in February 2011

We stayed at Gloucester Place for 3 nights after the end of a 9 night birding trip to Trinidad and Tobago. It was the perfect place to unwind and relax and use as a base to explore the island on our own. Win and Bea Sargent made you feel like guests visiting good friends. The rooms and the whole place was clean, airy and beautifully designed. We had our own balcony off our room with spectacular views down to the a cove on the coast - just 100 feet below you. There's even a very cool blowhole! The property itself has birds, beautiful flowers and a wonderful horizon pool. The breakfasts varied each day but were all excellent. Cereal, fruit and toast was always available, but there was always an interesting hot dish as well. We also chose to have two of our dinners there and they were excellent as well. Bea and Win were helpful in answering our questions and giving us ideas of places to go. If you'd like to see our pictures of the place - rooms, interior, pool, flowers, birds, etc, you can look in the Gloucester Place folder on our trip website at "BirdingTrinidadandTobago.Shutterfly.com" We certainly hope to return one of these days and bring some friends with us.

      Paradise in Parlatuvier

Left on 09/16/2011 for a stay in February 2010

We enjoyed Bea and Win's hospitality for ten days and what a treat it was! Our stay felt like we were visiting with friends. Bea is an amazing cook and prepared delicious (and wheat-free) breakfasts and quite a few wonderful dinners for us.
Gloucester Place itself is a beautifully open and airy house with a great porch overlooking the cliffs, a dramatic blow hole and the Caribean Sea.
Our room was beautifully furnished with artifacts from Bea and Win's stay in India. There was a huge and very comfortable bed, fluffy feather pillows and high-quality cotton sheets. There was also an air conditioning unit, so we slept in cool comfort each night.
Bea and Win have lots of local knowledge and gave advice on places to visit and on which driving routes we should take. A highlight was a birding trip they organized for us with Newton George.

Great hospitality on the edge of the carribean sea

Left on 09/16/2011 for a stay in January 2011

Gloucester Place is a terrific place to stay. First, the house is beautiful (and meticulously clean). Largely designed by Bea, one of the proprietors, it is open, light and airy, with beautiful design and architectural touches. The house is situated on a steep plot of land that runs down to the coast (rocky here, though there is a very uncrowded and scenic beach about a third of a mile away (down a nearby hill). The view from the verandah on the property is gorgeous--waves crashing on rocks, and miles of blue sea. For me, who enjoys birds, I also loved the flowers and feeders on the property which were frequented by bananaquits, palm tanagers and hummingbirds. But even more important to the pleasure of our stay than the house itself were the owners, Bea and Win. Bea is an excellent cook, and breakfasts and dinners are delicious (the dinners are at extra cost but the breakfasts are included in the room fare). Moreover, Bea and Win go beyond simply doing the normal; they really worked to make sure that our experience was wonderful. When my partner and I somehow lost our room key at the beach, Win and Bea treated us with wonderful grace, replacing the key and making us feel as if we hadn't troubled them too much. They were extremely helpful in giving us advice about local restaurants, beaches and possible experiences, and they are just wonderful people to talk with. My partner and I had just come from four days in a small guest house in rural Trinidad (deep in the rainforest of the Northern Range), and while we loved both parts of our trip, the stay in Gloucester Place was extremely special, one of our truly special memories in a lifetime of travel. While we tend not to repeat trips (the world has too much that is new to see and explore), Gloucester Place is one place we might choose to revisit for a very decompressed, relaxing trip to Caribbean sun, sand and Bea and Win's hospitality.

Warm and welcoming hosts in paradise

Left on 09/16/2011 for a stay in January 2011

The island of Tobago is a wonderful getaway with Parlatuvier Bay being one of our favorites on the island. The vacation gods must have overseen our choice of accommodations as we fell into the perfect location with a breathtaking view and amazingly hospitable hosts. Bea & Winn not only offered a home cooked dinner on our first night of arrival, but provided excellent hiking, snorkeling and sightseeing suggestions. They lent us snorkel gear, helped us exchange money and Bea personally escorted us to a local trail head, where their Wonderdog led us on a trek up waterfalls and through dense foliage. The modestly priced cottage at Gloucester Place offered a peaceful and breathtaking view of palms, banana trees, vivid flowering plants and the distant sea. We loved the open air kitchen and bedroom that provided just enough privacy. Downstairs was another more private bedroom for our friends, but most of our time "at home” was spent on the deck relaxing, reading and enjoying happy hour. The cottage stay is not for those who expect air conditioning, but then I would recommend staying at the main house. The dipping pool, available to all guests, was quite refreshing! The only pitfall with the open air cottage was the loud bus that rolled past around 7:30 am, but the birds were already singing at that hour. There were plenty of beautiful beaches nearby with excellent snorkeling and tasty local food. You could hike from Gloucester Place down stone steps to Parlatuvier Bay where we bought fresh fish and enjoyed "liming” with the locals to calypso music. Castara offered fun beach dining with steel drums, limbo and a drum circle. Bea and Winn are active in the community tutoring the children; so at the mention of their names, the locals took care of us. We highly recommend The Gloucester Place and cottage as a most lovely place to vacation, but it is so because Bea and Winn have the special gift of welcoming, caring for and enjoying their guests. Relax and take in Tobago!!

      Tropical paradise

My wife, 21 month old daughter and I stayed in Essex Cottage for two weeks during our honeymoon in april and in a nutshell, we had the best possible time!
Essex Cottage is fantastic; it's located in Parlatuvier which is a beautiful fishing village on the north-east part of the island. We traveled around the island for two weeks and this is the real Tobago! If you want resorts and busy beaches then you're better off staying near the airport but if you want a bit of quiet, local walks in the rain forest, friendly locals, wildlife, amazing quiet beaches then this is simply the place to be. It's also located not far from Castara if you want a bit more life but nothing too touristy.
Essex Cottage is great, well kitted out and furnished, clean, incredible views and Bea and Win are great hosts. They are very knowledge about the area and helped us organise car hire and various excursions. We had a meal cooked by Bea on a couple of occasions and the food was wonderful. We also used their grill to cook chicken and fish (purchased very cheaply from the local fisherman). We used the pool a lot which is great and has the best views. The landscaped gardens are amazing and very well looked after.
Thanks so much Bea and Win for making our stay so enjoyable.
