A great cabin in a wonderful location. Everything it was advertised to be and more. I hadn't fished for years but gave it a try and caught (and released) a number nice trout. We got lots of good pictures of the birds and the river. We wanted to get away fromn the world and the Pecos River Cabin allowed us to do exactly that. (I usually don't write reviews but had to make an exception in this case)

Las Cruces, NMEnchanting Pecos River Cabin
Left on 06/01/2013 for a stay in May 2013
Delighted that all the representations about this charming cabin on the Pecos River were accurate. Yet the experience of being there exceeded our expectations. When we arrived, the birds were everywhere enjoying the bounty offered by the bird feeders...what a nice touch! The little wagon was there to help us move our stuff from the car into our cabin retreat. The cabin was spotless and had all of the amenities of home The heat was so efficient that we were always comfortable, even when the temperature dropped to the low 40's. The bridge across the stream invited us to explore the trail over to the Pecos River whose rushing waters we heard as soon as we stepped out of the car. All this and only 45 minutes to my favorite Santa Fe Whole Foods store or a walk around the plaza. We had lunch at Frankie in Pecos the first day and they had been closed for three days while there was filming of a Longmire episode going on. We had brought our Longmire books to read so we knew we were in the right place. The bed was comfortable and it was amazing to lay there and look up at the night stars. We had a wonderful time and plan to make our next visit for a longer period of time..soon we hope. The Barnetts, Las Cruces,NM (The cabin was only a five hour drive from our door to the cabin !)

My husband and I spent a week at the cabin and had an amazing time. The cabin has everything you could need, so no need to over pack (like we did). Sante Fe is just a short (50 min) drive away and has fabulous shopping. The cabin is so peaceful and relaxing. Listening to the river at night was soothing, and the hiking in the area is fantastic. We spent most of our time down by the river. We hiked Hyde Park in Sante Fe, it was grueling, but well worth it, and visited "10,000 Waves" spa. We can't wait to return! We have found our new vacation spot!

DallasPecos River Cabin, A Wonderful Experience
Left on 01/17/2013 for a stay in January 2013
We were warned in advance that the cabin was small--ideally suited for two to four people. We are a family of seven: my wife and I and five kids (aged 2 to 11). So, we thought we knew what we were committing ourselves to. But, to our great surprise, the cabin felt very spacious. All of us fit very comfortably in the cabin. Plenty of room for sleeping, watching movies (BTW, the cabin is very well stocked with movies for kids and adults, books on nature, etc.), or just lounging in front of the fire.
There was always plenty of hot water for baths--in the delightful bathroom and tub--which was a great experience given the snow and low temperatures outside!
The cabin was also very warm and cozy: the heat worked superbly; the wood burning stove was also very easy to light and keep going. Very atmospheric! My wife repeatedly made comments about how well decorated and furnished the cabin was: the artwork is wonderful, the kitchen in very well stocked for any kind of cooking one would want to do in a cabin. And the furniture and beds were very comfortable.
Our kids loved exploring outside: just steps away from the cabin is the Pecos River--very, very peaceful and beautiful.
Overall our family could not have had a better experience. Thank you, Pecos River Cabin! We look forward to returning as quickly as we can! -

Midland, TXAn awesome cabin in an awesome setting.
Left on 12/15/2012 for a stay in October 2012
Words & pictures on the website can't describe how unbelievably great Margo's place is. The cabin was spotless and well stocked. We spent the early week in Santa Fe near the Plaza for the annual Nmoga convention. Having spent my summers along the Pecos River in my youth, we decided to reserve this cabin for the remainder of that week-and we weren't disappointed. Once we unpacked, I hit the river with my flyrod and caught a nice Rainbow on the very 1st presentation. Shelia also caught a few trout at Monestary Lake (there is nothing better than a meal of fresh caught trout). We had a great time hiking along the river, sitting outside the cabin, and re-exploring the area. I brought back many wonderful memories of the times I spent with my Dad on the Pecos. He passed earlier this year of lung cancer at 83, but I felt as if he was there on the river with me.
Thank you, Margo-we hope to come back in the late spring or early summer of 2013. -

Left on 12/13/2012 for a stay in October 2012
Fully stocked and very clean. I enjoyed fishing the river right out the cabin & even caught a nice rainbow on my first presentation with my fly rod. Shelia enjoyed fishing nearby Monastery Lake & we both had a great time hiking and just relaxing on the patio. I spent many summers along the Pecos and in the Pecos Wilderness (Lakes Katherine, Spirit & Stewart) with my family when I was a teen. Brought back many fond memories of time spent here with my Dad who passed with lung cancer earlier this year. Margo was very helpful. We hope to come back late spring or early summer 2013.

These ladies know how to make a place comfortable. We were so amazed at how every little detail was taken care of. Everything was easy, beautiful, extremely clean, and cozy. If you are looking for the perfect get away spot...look no further than the Pecos River Cabin. If you enjoy fly fishing it has perfect access to the Pecos River and easy wading right out the back door. Thank you so much for such a wonderful place. We will be back for sure.

The service was incredible, you literally only need bring your jammies and slippers. And, of course some food to eat. This little cabin is a perfect getaway from the business of life. Tucked away in the forest with the sound of a gurgling, bubbling river, blue jays fighting over pears and apples and the beautiful scene of changing leaves in the early autumn. What is there not to like about this beautiful cabin. We would heartily recommend it to everyone.

Santa FeBeware of double booking & last minute cancellation of reservati
Left on 08/10/2012 for a stay in August 2012
I made a reservation on June 13th with Margo for a stay at the Pecos River Cabin during the week of august 13th. She promptly secured over $1,000 on my credit card for a full weeks lodging.
Margo contacted me on July 27th and cancelled my reservation two weeks prior to our stay, due to her double-booking error. This left me scrambling to make last minute arrangements for another alternative. There were few choices available with only a two week notice during the peak Summer season. As it turned out, I got lucky and found a much better place (Dragonfly Canyon Retreat),,, a bigger house, better amenities and less expensive, just up the road a few miles.
This was a major inconvenience and caused much unnecessary stress! Even though she gets your money, don't believe your reservation is firm until you're sleeping in the bed.
Response from Margo Barnes - 08/11/2012
Owner
I fully understand Michael's anger. This was the worst mistake I've made in the seven years we've owned Pecos River Cabin. I notified him the second I realized my error and spent the next three days on the phone and internet trying to find him another place, which I told him I would pay for in addition to refunding his money. None of the places I offered was acceptable, but he found a place that he found suitable, and I'm very glad he did. I also offered him time at my cabin at a later date, at no charge.
I knew that these efforts were not enough to make up for the inconvenience and disappointment my mistake caused. I did everything I could think of to make this right, but in the end all I could do was apologize and promptly return his money. I have restructured my reservations process to make sure this never happens again.
I am deeply sorry for my error. There is nothing more I can offer, and I hope potential guests will consider ALL of my reviews and give Pecos River Cabin, and me, a fair chance.

I can't say enough about the wonderful vacation we had at the Pecos river cabin! The cabin was perfect. It was clean, comfortable and stocked with everything we needed and very well maintained. The grounds were beautiful and fun to explore. We loved relaxing in the hammock as well as the various seating areas right along the river. The location is great; we spent one rainy afternoon shopping in Santa Fe. The owners were great to answer any questions and left very detailed information about the cabin and the area. We look forward to returning for another relaxing vacation on the river!

Left on 06/07/2012 for a stay in July 2011
My husband and I stayed at the Pecos River Cabin July 23-30, 2011. It was the most wonderful vacation we've ever had. The cabin is well furnished, and the owners provide those "little extras" that make you feel like you're at home. We made day trips to Santa Fe and Taos, but mostly we just hung out at the cabin. It is so beautiful; you don't want to leave. We fished the Pecos every day, and caught lots of trout. On the final day of our stay, they re-opened the park (closed for fire danger), and we were able to do some hiking. We saw lots of deer and even had the privilege of seeing a bear when we were returning from the Terrero General Store one evening. When you go, be sure to eat at Frankie's Casanova. Their breakfast is awesome. The next time we travel to Pecos, we will definitely stay there again.

What a beautiful and peaceful piece of property the cabin sits on. This wonderful cabin has been restored both inside and out and the attention to detail is visible throughout. We were lucky to arrive after a heavy snow storm so we spent our days building snowmen, sliding down hills in the park across the street or taking walks around the wooded area around the cabin. The evenings were spent cooking in the kitchen (well stocked with all your kitchen tools) and playing Clue. (lots of games to choose from). We had a wonderful Christmas at the cabin and plan on returning this summer to throw a line in the river that sits in front of the cabin.

My wife, Melissa and I planned this trip in June, 2011, to stay the first weekend of October, 2011. Margo was very helpful in answering my questions as well as advising that particular weekend to see the fall colors. She also gave very precise directions
We have stayed in similar cabins, which is our preference. In our opinion, this cabin rates at the top of the list. The owners Margo and Vicki, have thought of every detail in making any guest feel at home at the cabin. All one needs is a quick trip to the local store for food.
I have been all over Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, and other parts of New Mexico, and I have never seen the grandeur that the Pecos mountains have. The cabin is at 7800 feet and just steps from the river. This place was well thought out, well maintained, equipped, and clean.
I'm having technical difficulty in the star rating tab above, but on a 5 star criteria, I give a 6 for the cabin, the location, and the owners. This is an escape to paradise that we plan on going to at least twice a year. I've yet to see it's rival.

Austin, TXA quiet and relaxing place to stay!
Left on 08/20/2011 for a stay in June 2011
The cabin was a perfect getaway for our little family of four. Our girls (four and six) loved the cabin, the yard, the creek, and the river. My husband and I really appreciated the extra things that the owners provided and displayed. We had a box of brochures and shelves of books to look at regarding the surrounding area. There was a box of games and shelves of movies to entertain us when we happened to be inside the cabin (which wasn't that often). The yard, creek and river were fabulous. We really liked that you could walk across the street and have a picnic park to enjoy too. Towards the end of our stay the nearby forest fires became an issue as the locals shut down the national forest to help prevent the spread of the fires. The owners and cabin neighbors were on top of letting us know what to expect and how they could help. We were never in danger, but it was super great to know what was going on and how we should react. The only things that were bumps in our vacation were: We had to go into Santa Fe in order to get a full service grocery store, but the trip to and from was fairly quick thanks to the highway speed limit. The stairs in cabin were very steep and my husband and I have bad knees, but we survied (the only bedroom and bathroom were upstairs). We were looking forward to swinging in the hammock and it broke the 1st day we were there (due to weathered ropes), but the manager offered to buy a new one. However, they didn't get one installed in time for our stay. In general, we had a great and peaceful vacation. We would have loved to stay for two weeks. Hint: Make sure to bring water shoes if you want to explore the river. Barefeet just aren't an option and no one locally sells water shoes (if you forget, it is another trip to Santa Fe). :-)
Response from Margo Barnes - 08/27/2011
Owner
We're so sorry the hammock broke! We looked high and low for a new one and every store was sold out. We had to order one online -- unfortunately not in time for these guests.
There's a very good grocery store in Eldorado, halfway between Pecos and Santa Fe. Saves a little time -- Pecos is a very small town.
Good call about the water shoes -- the river bottom is extremely slippery. I'll be adding that to my pre-visit info package!
Many of our summer guests were inconvenienced by the threat of fire in the Canyon. Thank you for your patience and understanding! Thankfully, the Santa Fe National Forest remained fire-free due to the precautions and 'round-the-clock vigilance of our Forest Service and Fire Department. They are true heroes. -

IllinoisI want to go back.
Left on 08/20/2011 for a stay in July 2011
I was looking for a place near Santa Fe but not near a lot of people. This cabin fit the bill perfectly. A well maintained 2-story cabin with bedroom and bathroom upstairs. Stairway to upstairs is steep but got used to it quickly. Kitchen very pleasant, stocked with really good pots & pans. Lovely linens and towels provided. Located about 40 minute drive to Santa Fe opera, all driving on paved roads.
When we were there the national forest was closed due to extreme dryness and fire danger which limited our activities somewhat. The cabin property is privately owned in national forest land but being in the national forest gave lots of privacy and we enjoyed the sounds of birds and nature.
Closest town with gas station and restaurants is Pecos, NM, a 10 mile drive. A few miles from town is the Pecos National Historic Monument site, well worth a visit.
We would have preferred to check in earlier but understand the need to allow time for the caretaker to get the cabin ready for the next guests. I gave 4 stars for comfort because of the steep stairs to get to the upstairs. If you have trouble with stairs, you'll have trouble with these.
As far as service is concerned, it's the best! The owner who handles the correspondence, Margo, is so good about answering questions, keeping in touch, and giving advice about the area. The cabin has books and maps and brochures available for interesting sites and things to do in the area. We weren't all that interested in doing much beyond going to the opera, taking a drive to Taos, and enjoying the quiet surroundings.
This is not a spa or resort setting and it costs more than other cabins we've rented in the past but the price is reflects the care and quality of maintaining this property and its contents. I think it's a real plus that the owners actually use the cabin the course of the year and are well aware of how it's maintained during their absence. -

This lovely cabin isn't far from the main road, but it has a quiet, secluded feel to it. The Pecos river runs through the property, and there is a private island that children will enjoy. Good hiking trails nearby, but plenty to do without leaving the grounds - fly fishing, horseshoes, and a giant hammock. Kitchen is well appointed, and the outdoor patio is a relaxing place for meals. A good selection of puzzles, games and videos. We didn't want to leave, and will definitely be back.

The Pecos River Cabin is near a tributary of the Pecos river and the 100 year old, fully restored and modernized authentic log home is located within broad meadows boasting seasonal wildflowers and tall decidious trees. The cabin amenities, including washer/dryer, dishwasher and other conveiniences insure a comfortable, interesting visit during any month of the year. Both the cabin interior and the surrounding grounds were in excellent, clean condition.
Personally, I particularly enjoyed the skylights thru which I could see brilliant stars in the very dark night sky and listen to the bubbling of the nearby trout filled stream.
Still, it is only a few miles drive to historic Santa Fe with its opera, arts, crafts, museums and fine dining.

We loved our august stay in the Pecos River Cabin. The skylight over the bed upstairs let us see the stars at night as we listened to the river! The cabin was charmingly decorated with trout fishing items and Vicky's photographs of nature scenes are wonderful. We went to see her other work at the Waxlander Gallery on Canyon Road in Santa fe. The kitchen had everything we needed and it was great to eat outside on the stone patio, under the trees. The cute log cabin had a great feeling of being nestled away in the woods from all the cares of the world.
