Shalimar A
Moreno Valley, California, United StatesBasic rental property, but enjoyable.
Left on 02/06/2013 for a stay in December 2012
The location of this property was ideal for our group. It was located on the beach, was near the main boulevard, restaurants, casinos, and stores. The staff, with only one exception, was very helpful and friendly. Our room was overlooked the beach, but was near the restaurant, so we could hear the staff cleaning and prepping food throughout the day. We also had a problem with water that leaked near the door, but we couldn't determine where it was coming from and the staff never "fixed" the problem. Check property rental fees carefully because there were major differences in the prices paid for the identical room. This matter was not addressed by the booking agent, Jackie.

Wonderful place, nice & clean well kept & updated only problem cable tv goes out at a certain time on some channels. able to walk the property without any trouble with other vacationers or natives, everyone is friendly. the casino in short walking distance did not have to drive there. planning on retruning again in a few months. I hope I will be staying at the same resort such a convience to the store, ATM & the 24 hour restaurant down the hill has friendly beach employees helping with your chairs & umbrellas, of course you give them a little tip for their service which is ok they work hard in that hot sun and of course the sun is so relaxing & it gets hot you will tan even if you are not trying to. Nice place to vacation & enjoy See you soon!!!

Vancouver, CanadaLovely property, but you'll be a captive there or pay dearly to

Pro:
Fabulous "jungle" setting, pleasant staff, well maintained. Fair-good food albeit pricey. Clean, functional rooms. Great maid service. Golf course beautiful, fun to play "executive par 3" and challenging.
Huge pool area, nice chairs, small palapas available for rent w/ kickback toward F&B; I.e. pay $30 to rent, get $30 in credits at the end of the day. Happy hour for drinks from 11a-1p but beware you're getting double-sized drinks, not "2 for 1".
Negative -
The location is far from -anywhere- and there are no local services outside the hotel. $20 for taxi each way to the city of playa del Carmen. There is periodic shuttle service available but for a party of 4 it's about the time to hire a taxi. So, If you want to do anything outside add $40 and an hour+ travel time. Two of us went scuba-diving for two days; had to leave a 7:30a - not a "vacation like" experience.
Tourist buses aren't allowed to enter the complex -only the property's vendors. If you don't book w the hotel, you have to get yourself to the entrance - a $3 taxi ride, or you have to wait for a scheduled shuttle.
The pool, while lovely, is shallow - fine for kids, not so much for adults. Frequent walls make it impractical to swim any distance without bumping into something. Pool F&B; service was cheery, but unacceptably slow. Tips are automatically included in pricing which provides little incentive to good service. Two of our party who'd order a cold sandwich felt I'll sometime afterward; perhaps that mayo sat around just a little too long?
Nice chairs, beachfront, sand, but shoreline is rocky and inaccessible. 15 minute walk to get to area where you can actually get to the water.
The two services we availed ourselves of were completely disorganized - water sports and spa. They were unclear about the services and their costs, what the vouchers we had were actually good for, etc. It's important to be comfortable with staff that is renting you potentially life threatening equipment (say, jet skis or scuba equipment). No way.
One more thing. Internet access is slow, unreliable, and expensive. That's 3 strikes. High latency (probably satellite) with poor wireless signal. Of the staff at the hotel, the support line was the least friendly and least cooperative. I could go on, but if Internet access is important for you, you will be disappointed here - and there are no alternatives anywhere close by.
"Time Share" sales: They offer nice discounts (which seem to vary from guest to guest) in order to get you to visit a "90 minute introduction" to their timeshare operation. We got 10% off our overall bill and I think 1000 pesos and an excellent buffet breakfast for 4. But a) no way will you be done in 90 minutes, and b) prepare to be "heavily persuaded". Not brow-beaten per se, but three of the four of us have sales/marketing backgrounds and we recognized "hard sell" techniques. Its as if their position is that only an idiot would deny the value in their offer [so what don't you sign up?]. We made it abundantly clear we weren't buying, but the salesperson persisted, _then_ sent in a "Closer" who tried to sweeten the deal and, well, close.
Summary
There's no denying this is a *beautiful* property, and if you're the "hang out at the poolside, cost be damned" type of traveler, it's indeed a wonderful spot. If you plan on visiting town often, it's a bit of a hassle and the costs add up. We would probably opt for something closer to the center of Playa if we were to return. Don't expect great service with "automatic" gratuities.
