We stayed 7 nights in Penneshaw at Western's Rest. The house has been updated with a modern kitchen, lovely bathroom and large windows to take in fabulous views over Hog Bay. The house is perfectly positioned, close enough to walk to the beach but not on display to every car that drives along the foreshore. We visited Stokes Bay for a swim and lunch at The Rockpool Cafe, this is a must do when on the Island. Cliffords Honey, Dudley Winery, Chapman River winery, American River are all worth a visit. If you feel energetic climb Prospect Hill for stunning views of the Island. We hired a tinnie from Wallaby Bob at Baudin Beach for $100, all day hire including fuel. Best investment we made, 5 Snapper, 11 whiting, a huge Flathead and numerous Tommies all caught about 600m from shore. Can't wait to book our next holiday on KI and go back to Western's Rest.

When we arrived into the house we found that the accommodation was more than what we had expected. The Views from the bedroom & living areas were spectacular and the layout of the house was extremely comfortable. We witnessed a lot of wildlife from just looking out the window such as all sorts of birdlife, ducks, a pengiun, dolphins and even a seal.
Everyone that we met was very friendly and were also interested in where we had come from and how we were liking our stay on KI.
All the local amenities were in walking distance from the house.
We will definately recommend this stay to all our friends and relatives.

This is a first class property in a fantastic location. We have just spent 10 weeks staying in hotels and self catering units whilst on holiday in Oz and this was the best of the best.
Sit on the veranda and watch the Dolphins, walk along the beach, chill out at the local hotel and get a really good nights sleep. Every facility in this property was first class and there was plenty of everything that you needed to make for a great stay apart from a shortage of towels. Peter & Jan made the booking process easy and provided enough information to make our arrival easy. Would stay again and recommend to couples and families. -

This was our second stay at Western's Rest and it was better than before. The house had just finished undergoing significant renovation and it has become a more beautiful place to stay and take in the view rather than simply a base from which to go out and explore...having said that, Kangaroo Island in general has to be seen from all angles. The new kitchen is brilliant and the bathroom is 5 star. Be prepared for a night or two of restless sleep as you get used to the noises from the Little Penguins that nest on and around the property, but this will be forgotten when you see the little noise makers making there way home after a hard day fishing and also see the wallabies grazing on the front lawn.
While Penneshaw might not suit everyone due to the time it takes to get to other places on the island, the meals from "Fish" and the other services the town provides make it a must see on the island.
It would be hard to stay anywhere else if we get back to Kangaroo Island. -

Had wonderful holiday experience in Penneshaw. House was clean, comfortable and overlooking most gorgeous beach. Spent most evenings on terrace looking out at bay, and watching wallabies in the front garden! A definite home from home, we didn't want to leave & will definintely be back again.

I have stayed at Western's Rest many times: each time as wonderful as the last. The location allows extensive views out to sea and the bay. Simply stunning and incredibly relaxing! It felt private but is only a few minutes from the centre of town. Very convenient.
The house is fully equipped with everything we may need for a comfortable stay, including many kitchen amenities. Everything is clean, comfortable and allows us to feel 'at home'
Having 2 lounge areas allows us to relax in front of the TV if we wish, while others can read at the other end of the living space, in front of the pot belly stove on cool nights, or days! Then.... there's the amazing decking out the front, where we spent many meal times and relaxing times socialising.
Wallabies grazing on the front lawn was a unique experience as was spotting the dolphins frolicking out in the bay.
Western's Rest has to be one of my very favourite places: I think it's not just one thing. The photo displayed gives some indication of its location, but can't really do it justice. It's the view, proximity of the water, the relaxing comfortable environment in the house, that the Westerns have created, including the decking, the ease of getting there and the Kangaroo Island experience, which makes it a really special place to stay.

Melbourne, AustraliaWhat's not to love?
Left on 05/08/2010 for a stay in March 2010
It is with some trepidation that we rated Western's Rest so highly. We are a family of four who love staying in cottages - until this trip - all over Victoria. We kept hearing about how great Kangaroo Island was, and planned this trip back before Christmas 2009. Even back then, there were a number of cottages to choose from, but the photos showing the view from Western's Rest hooked us. In reality, Western's Rest was even better than the photos... the nightly visits from the wallabies, the noise of the little penguins nesting somewhere on the property and across the road in the bushes, the walks along the beach (and the quality of the shells), and watching the Sealink Ferry coming and going. Western's Rest and Penneshaw in general, although at one end of the island, was still our preferred place to stay. We rarely return to places we have visited, but we all agreed that Kangaroo Island, Penneshaw and especially Western's Rest has to be seen again. That's why it is with trepidation that we recommended Western's Rest so highly, we still want to be able to book and come again.

What an AMAZING place to experience! When you get off the boat you are on the deck within 3
minutes. The views are spectacular. I could easily sit on that deck for a week and relax. Besides
beautiful views of Hog Bay you can see across to the mainland. I spent many days measuring time by
watching the ferries come and go and dolphin and whale spotting keeps the kids amused. At night
wallabies come right up to the house to graze and the night trek to see the Fairy penguins is a
must. The beach house is immaculately clean - even the windows are clean so that you can fully
enjoy the views from the living areas and main bedroom. The owners have put a lot of thought into
what is required to make your stay comfortable. They provide excellent home comforts to maximise
your enjoyment of the place. The kitchen is well set up to enable you to cook whatever you want, the
beds are all comfortable and there are even CD's and DVD's provided for when you want to blob out.
The place has good air conditioning and the wood heater keeps the entire house cosy warm in
winter. We were there for a week in winter and I consider it the best time to be there. We cranked up
the combustion heater, cooked up some soup and read, slept, watched DVD's and felt the blood
pressure come right down. Although there are many options of things to do on the island we found
that Western's Rest is the sort of beach house that you don't want to leave. My family have rented
many beach houses and whenever I ask the kids where they'd like to go in the holidays they always
reply "Western's Rest". I fully recommend this beach house to you. It is absolute value for your money
and you will come away saying, "I am coming back here!" Enjoy! -

Our experience at Westerns Rest was truly wonderful. Jan Western was fantastic! The home is situated on the hill overlooking Penneshaw Bay, walking distance to everywhere in Penneshaw. A short stroll down to the pristine beach is ideal. The property is well set up and very homely and comfortable. The beds in particular are better than home! Even though the bathroom is not 5 star, this did not affect our stay in the least. Overall, I would recommend this holiday home to families or to couples.
