Description from the owner
Our cottage sits on a small bluff directly overlooking Penobscot Bay. About 15 feet from the cottage deck is our private stairs, leading to the water's edge. Maine coastline is more rocky than sandy -- our "beach" is perfect for rock scrambling. And there is a little dock at the foot of the stairs where some guests take their morning coffee or store a kayak or just sit and think. The water is cold -- at least for those of us used to swimming in the Gulf of Mexico -- but is ideal for rowing and canoeing and kayaking if one isn't hardy enough to take a swim. There are little islands nearby to explore, but my favorite thing to do is to paddl...Read more

Additional Location Information
The mailing address of the cottage is “Penobscot, Maine” but the closest village is Castine. Castine is the home of the Maine Maritime Academy. It’s a lovely little town, with a museum, fine restaurants, shops, and churches. The cottage is not in the town -- it’s about a 10-minute drive from it, on a finger of land that reaches out into Northern Bay.
About 15 minutes from the cottage is Blue Hill, which is another charming town with wonderful galleries and restaurants and shops, not to mention a place to rent canoes and kayaks very reasonably! And an hour away is Acadia National Park, with magnificent hiking, biking, and boating as well as a wealth of shops and restaurants.

Everything you could want in a vacation cottage except a beach. Great for a poet or a painter. Not a lot of action in the immediate neighborhood, but not far away.Quiet, well maintained and comfortable.

Philadelphia, PAWe discovered our most peaceful selves in this cottage on Penobs
Left on 09/02/2012 for a stay in August 2012
My husband and I rented this absolutely perfect cottage on the Penobscot Bay during our visit to the Downeast region of Maine in august, 2012. We wanted a comfortable home-base with a great view from which to set out each day for trips to acadia National Park, Blue Hill, and other shore town destinations. The cottage not only met, but exceeded our expectations. Photos just can't do justice to the gorgeous panoramic views of the bay that you can take in from the living room area and from the yard. Each morning we drank our tea along the edge of the property and watched the grey gulls and herons fly across the bay. We njoyed the ever-changing landscape of the bay at high and low tides. In the evenings, we cooked elaborate lobster dinners (finding everything we could need within the superbly appointed kitchen) and then enjoyed dining on various nights either in the cottage's indoor dining room or on the outdoor deck. When not feasting on lobster, we grilled a chicken one night on the charcoal grill. After dinners, we'd curl up on the cozy living room furniture and read in front of the fireplace. While we only used it once, the satellite TV was large and well-placed. Each morning we loved waking up to the view of the bay outside our window. The storage shed was perfect for our bicycles, keeping them safe and dry when not in use. The bathroom is a squeeze, both in terms of the location of the toilet and the size of the shower, but in-all, a very functional space. If I was pressed to find anything at all to be improved upon at this cottage it would only be to have more electrical outlets in the bathroom, and for the fridge door to open the opposite way in the kitchen. Otherwise, everything about our stay was perfect. There was even a sweet, playful, neighborhood dog that would visit us for games of catch. We hope you too will have the opportunity to stay in this beautiful, quiet, comfortable, and well-appointed cottage!

To sit outside and watch the tides roll in and out with lobster nets bobbing on the water's surface is nothing short of perfect. Add a modest, but wonderful "great room" with a picture window and fireplace, comfortable beds, and what you have is this lovely cottage. In addition, it is really convenient for exploration, including a 10 minute drive to the lovely Castine which has everything from great sunsets to terrific lobster rolls.

My experience here has always been the kind of summer in Maine you want to have. The location of the little Maine cottage is sublime. If I want a lazy day, there is nothing better than watching the vista of water with the dramatic change in tides, and sky and light. The Maine cottage house has a very relaxed and cozy feel. Very cheery when the sun is bright and warm with the fireplace on the foggy, chilly days.
This little house is great for a couple or for families whose kids who love hours and hours exploring outdoors. -

Left on 05/29/2011 for a stay in July 2010
We have spent a week in this adorable cottage for the past several years. It is quiet, clean and very comfortable. The stars are amazing at night and to get up in the morning and sit on the deck or dock and watch harbor seals right in front of us is one of our favorite things. It is close enough to Bar Harbour and acadia to do day trips. I look forward to a peaceful week in this safe little haven every year.

This is a small but wonderful cottage, with fireplace and great porch right on the Penobscot bay. No nonsense comfort, very private, quiet.

Tv, lights, hot water, etc., all functioned just fine. Neighbors were helpful with suggestons for sightseeing in the region. We were fortunate enough to get a free afternoon cruise on a 100-year-old sailing ship owned by the Maritime academy in nearby Castine. What fun!
