MelbourneGreat stay in the Lake District
Left on 05/13/2013 for a stay in April 2013
After arriving from australia (leaving 35 degree heat), we spent the first few days frozen (zero degrees in the UK), but the Lake District was absolutely beautiful with snow in the fields and the cottage was in the middle of all that. Great base to explore from. We were also appreciative that the owners had let us stay for less than one week over the Easter/school holiday period and enjoyed the complimentary chocolate! The cottage was well equipped and especially for children, with a games cupboard. We did not spend a great deal of time indoors as we were out exploring most of the time but when we did, we had everything we needed. We found the cottage a little cold as the heating was locked down, but Malcolm gladly changed this for us to make our stay more comfortable. I also appreciated his continued advice on the weather before we left australia. I thought that was a special touch and the advice to bring thermal underwear was very much appreciated. I had forgotten how cold it could be in the UK! Would very much recommend this accommodation, particularly for families.
Response from Nyree Stubbs - 05/19/2013
Owner
Hi Vanessa,
We are so glad you enjoyed your stay with us - even if it was the coldest Easter for 50 years, at least you had the snow you wished for!. We now have a new gas central heating system which will keep guests warm whatever the temperature outside. We fitted it especially for guests arriving in winter from warmer climates as our winters do seem to be getting colder.

leedsA Lovely Place To Stay!
Left on 04/10/2013 for a stay in April 2013
Brackenber cottage was a pleasure to spend our all too short break in.The owner was extremely welcoming and obviously took great pride in the property as it was in pristine shape and spotlessly clean. Alot of thought had gone into the smaller details which made the stay so much easier and made you feel at home. There was more than enough space to spend quality time with the family or to disappear into your own area for a few hours (the cinema room being a particular treat). There is no shortage of visual/audio entertainment but if you prefer to read or just sit and relax the cottage offers a calm and quiet atmosphere. Also a great spot to access from the M6 but equally close to the lakes for a fun day out.

Left on 09/22/2012 for a stay in September 2012
Really nice accommodation and Nyree and Malcolm were very easy and friendly to deal with. Good location if you want to go a couple different places - in between Windemere and Penrith, so nice for two day trips. House was perfect for our family - two kids, two parents and two parents. Good walks without having to drive anywhere as well as 20 minute drives to the lakes.

Left on 09/20/2012 for a stay in August 2012
We recieved a warm welcome from the owner who was on hand, if required, throughout our stay.
The cottage was clean and very comfortable, it had everything we needed, the 2 gardens and entertainment room were a real bonus. The little extras we needed - highchair, stairgates, cot etc. for our grandson were also a real help.
The location with easy access to the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and Pennines meant there was lots to do and explore with stunning scenery nearby. The local village had everything we needed on a daily basis.
The cottage was excellent value for money.
Thankyou for a lovely holiday. -

The accommodation is of the highest standard and the location excellent. It's very well equipped lovely family house; all the bedrooms are a really good size. The garden is fantastic and the access to the lakes was great. We had fantastic time doing BBQ and watching movies in cinema room. There was only one disappointment with the drier stop suddenly however Nyree and Malcolm pops in within minutes and fix it quickly. We found drink, chocolate and cookies when we arrived from landlord. Fabulous fish and chips nearby and great environment. Definitely recommend it for everyone.

thoroughly enjoyed our stay and we would recommend the cottage to others. The cottage was well stocked with comfortable beds. The Greyhound pub is walking distance from the cottage and serves nice traditional meals with a relaxed atmosphere. The location brings the best of both worlds being rural yet also near to many tourist attractions Lowther Castle and Bird Of Prey Centre, also Keswick,Kendal and Windermere.

Left on 06/06/2012 for a stay in April 2012
I stayed at Brackenber whilst working for a week in Cumbria. I'd normally stay at a local hotel, but decided to try self catering instead. It was a huge success, which ended up being cheaper than a hotel and much more convenient. The house itself is tucked away from the main road through Shap and is beautifully appointed. The couple who own the property were very helpful throughout the booking process and I was met on arrival. They live close by and were available if required but respected my privacy. I'd happily go back for a family holiday and would thoroughly recommend it. A gem!

Having found the property advertised on the Shap community website we thought it looked lovely and well equipped, we were not dissapointed.
We found the owners attentive and obliging and cottage to be as described.
All the rooms were found to be of a good size with period high ceilings and in good decorative order. There was plenty of space outside for relaxing.
The location was ideal for us and only a 5 - 10 minute walk to the nearest of four "local watering holes", all serving reasonable food for good value.
Turning right immediately in front of the cottage, away from the village, takes you down a lane leading to walks over farmland, fell roads and the abbey ruins.
A short car journey takes you to Haweswater/Mardale which is a beautiful spot for walking or just taking in the scenery.
The "coast to coast" route crosses the main road at the top of the village and we walked part of the route as one of our circular walks.
Shap is so close to the motorway network it makes the journey really easy and yet the beautiful rugged countryside is only minutes away.
Shap does appear to have everything you would need to stay and live in the village including an open air swimming pool, in season. If you need more, then Penrith is only "up the road".
The only thing we didn't try was the local fish & chip shop, but as we are going back this weekend hopefully we can try it then.
The produce we took home with us from the local butcher was very good.
Overall we were very pleased with our choice and would not hesitate to stay here again or indeed recommend it to others.

Left on 01/05/2012 for a stay in December 2011
We arrived and were greated by Malcolm who showed us around and told us everything we needed to know. A lovely welcome pack of wine, chocolates and other goodies had been left for us Which was a lovely touch. There was also a birthday card for mum, which was very nice of Malcolm and Nyree. The cottage itself was absolutely stunning. Everything we could have possibly needed was provided. The attention to detail and those extra touches made it feel like home from home. The bedrooms were beautifully finished and extremely comfortable. We were all able to relax and enjoy a fantastic break, just what we all needed. I will certainly be recommending this cottage to friends and we are already planning a return trip in the summer as we loved it so much. Roll on the summer as we can't wait to return!

We recently had the pleasure of staying at Brackenber Cottage. The location was perfect for exploring the Lake District and there were scenic walks from the cottage itself. The spacious cottage was very clean and fully equipped with everything a family could need, from the lovely, comfortable beds to the fantastic entertainment room. We were greeted on arrival by the owner and throughout our stay they were on hand to help us with any questions we had about the cottage or the Lake District, nothing was too much trouble. It was a delight to wake up every morning to the beautiful coutryside views. We throughly enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back!

Were delighted to arrive and find milk, tea, sugar and biscuits and cake to welcome us! Plus a bottle of wine! The cottage was fab, the atention to detail amazing. The kitchen was well outfitted with a nice big table we could all sit around and eat. The bedrooms were beautifully done. All had their own hairdryers which was a blessing. Bedlinen lovely and big fluffy pillows. Bathroom had a good powerful shower with plenty of hot water.
The gardens were lovely. Sat in the back and for bbq's and sat in the front at dusk to watch loads of bats swooping about. Brilliant!
Nyree was there to greet and us and nothing was too much trouble. It was like meeting an old friend! Great hosts who obviously realy want you to enjoy your stay.
Lovely sitting room with TV to relax with in the evening.
The location was excellent. Five minutes along the lane was a stream - there were buckets and nets which we all used to catch minnows. Great fun. Beyond the stream were the fells providing great walks. Loads of wildlife about the area, even red squirrels!
Would say our favourite lake had to be Derwent. Had a wonderful day there, and hired a rowing boat whch was great fun.
Have to say, the cottage was the best holiday accommodation we have ever had and as far as value for money - amazing!!
We will def return!! Thank you so much Nyree and Malcolm!! -

We are a family with 2 children and wanted to explore the lakes. The cottage was in a perfect location with wonderful scenery, with plenty to do for the kids. Left on 07/09/2011 for a stay in July 2011
Great sized house with all mod cons. Scrupulously clean throughout. Spacious bedrooms with plenty of storage. Good outdoor space with grass on one side and patio on other. Kids loved the outdoor/indoor cinema in the garden and the chance to play the Wii in evenings. Welcoming, friendly and unintrusive attention from Nyree and Malcolm. If we had to find one negative it would only be that there was no freezer or freezer compartment in the fridge (although this is something we've increasingly found in self-catering accomodation in recent years)which would have been handy as the weather was divine and it would have been good to have ice cubes for drinks & ice-cream for kids.Otherwise a great house in a beautiful setting which we would love to return to. Thanks Nyree and Malcolm for a lovely stay.

Great to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us. I note your comment about the freezer - there is a full size freezer in the house. It was in the utility room which is why you may not have found it - we have now moved it into the kitchen so its a little more obvious.

Three generations of our family stayed at Brackenber Cottage, and we all had a great time.
The cottage has everything you need and more. All the rooms are beautifully decorated and furnished and the needs of the visitors has been really well thought through. The Owners were their to meet us on our arrival and showed us around the cottage and answered any queries we had, which was great.
All the bedrooms are really well laid out and very comfortable and the whole house was spotless.
If its a wet and miserable day and you dont wont to go far there are plenty of books to read, games to play and Dvd's to watch, which was a really nice touch.
We all want to go back as it felt like a real home from home and the area is great for exploring the lakes and all the fantastic scenery around. You can walk out of the cottage drive turn right and within a few minutes you reach a beautiful beck great for the kids to go fishing and to have a paddle.
We have stopped in lots of cottages over the years all over the country but Brackenber has to be on of the best. -
