Additional Location Information

''Quality of life, harmony, taste ...'' these are the terms which best define the Périgord.

First of all, as has been shown, the ''Perigord's raison d'être'' is to welcome with open arms those who come here to rediscover forgotten pleasures offered by the natural and simple things in life : pure air, silence, space (especially that), the genuine beauty of the surroundings and the art of living that these pleasures encourage.

Those who value archeology, history, gastronomy, in the country of prehistoric art and troubadors, with its natural beauties, its caves, its old stone buildings and its 1.001 castles, the Périgord and its capital Périgueux, lovingly restored, are all places that MUST be visited.

Come and wander around Perigueux classified ''Town of Art and History'' with :

- Back to the magnificence of the Roman Empire with its many architectural remains and its Gallo-Roman Vesunna Museum,
constructed by the architect Jean Nouvel on an exceptionally well-preserved site.
Its educational development allied to the beauty of its collections, together make a visit with no parallel.

- the St Front Cathedral sits prominently on its hill. It is an example of Byzantine architecture with its Greek cross (unique in France).
Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is an important stage on the St James of Compostella Pilgrims’ Way (the Vézelay route).

This cathedral is quite a surprise. An unusual sight. It rears up, clear and white, from the very middle of the swelling sea of Medieval Périgueux roofs. A flash of brightness but which lasts. It dominates the town with its marvellous mass. What astonishes you is the lavish yet sober aspect of the Romanesque and Byzantine architecture but above all, it is the way in which the bell-tower grows ever taller as you approach just as the Compostella pilgrims in former times must have approached it, dazzled by it, captivated by it.
It is lofty and white, stark and empty with naves and domes, with arches and galleries and clear stained glass to diffuse the azure brilliance onto the stainless white stone.
Inside, a magnificent 17th century reredos in the Baroque style.

- The Medieval and Renaissance district : one of the largest conservation areas in France. Its picturesque atmosphere emanates from its charming narrow streets, little squares, cobbled passages and its architecture in an incomparable state of conservation. Stroll into the ancient city, it is to wander through two thousand years of history.

Taste the richness of this exceptional territory : foie gras, duck, truffles, cep mushrooms, strawberries, walnuts, goat's cheese, Bergerac and Saint-Emilion wines …

River at 300 m. Alongside the river Isle, the17km Green Way, which crosses Greater Perigueux from East to West, accessible on foot, on rollerblades or by bike, offers you space and freedom to explore and to stroll or ride, in a calm country atmosphere, never leaving the banks of the river. Very soon a whole network of rambling ways will be linked. You will also be able to discover the natural and architectural richness of Greater Perigueux.

Nearest Golf : an 18 hole course : 6 km
Fancy a few rounds of golf ? The Golf, located only 5 minutes from the center of Périgueux, will welcome you to its calm and friendly atmosphere. The golf course, flat and technical, with numerous water hazards, is accessible to all levels of golfers, but requires concentration to play your handicap. In addition to the 18 holes, you will find here a high quality attractive Pitch & Putt, as well as a large driving range. The warm welcome and friendliness of the team remains the main asset of this club. After your game, the bar and the restaurant will offer you many enjoyable moments and a breath of fresh air !

Whatever the time of year, from the North to the South, from the East to the West, the countryside around Perigueux reveals the infinite richness of its natural, cultural and architectural heritage.

It is said that the Perigord countryside is among the gentlest in the world and since happiness never comes alone, the villages of the Perigord are overwhelmingly beautiful : a Romanesque church roofed in heavy stone shingles (called lauzes in french), a chateau or a very old majestic residence on which History has left scars that tell many a tale, the curve of an old bridge, houses enclosing the priest's garden where forgotten flowers flower discreetly and just there, beyond the last barn of the village, the meadows softly rise and fall to the undulating mushroom woods where the muffled fox-barks yelp in the night. At the period of the grape picking, the vines are adorned with a gleaming kaleidoscope of colours, a very subtle impression of russet ...

- Brantôme, Les Eyzies-de-Tayac, Monpazier, La Roque-Gageac, Sarlat …

- the terrace at Domme is a miracle of nature refined by man. As you look upward from the valley on certain days, your first sight of Domme is enough to dazzle you for life.

- the Lascaux Cave (dubbed the ''Sistine Chapel of Prehistory''), Grand Roc (the site of Jean Auel’s 6th book in the Earth’s Children series, The Painted Caves), Villars, Gouffre of Proumeyssac …

- the Castles of Beynac, Castelnaud, Hautefort, Jumilhac, Losse, Puyguilhem …
Whether they are perched on the hills overlooking the Vézère and Dordogne rivers, or hidden in the forests …

- the fabulous gardens of the Manoir d'Eyrignac, the suspened Gardens of Marqueyssac ...

- the Vezere Valley, also known as the Valley of Mankind, is one of France's UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Henry Miller on discovering the Perigord wrote :
“This is a magic land jealously guarded by poets ... It is a kind of Paradise granted to the French. I am convinced that that is how it was for Cro-Magnon Man and that he settled here because he was extremely intelligent, with a highly developed sense of beauty. Maybe one day France will cease to exist but the Dordogne will survive just like the dreams that nourish the human soul.”

Numerous cultural, musical and summer festivals and events, of which the famous ''Mimos'' Festival of Perigueux.
This International festival, which will celebrate this year its 32th edition, features mime, dance, object theatre, acrobatics, street entertainment, puppets and juggling.
The streets, squares, gardens, districts and indoor venues of Périgueux come alive with colour, shapes and rythms.
Many tourists come to Perigueux for Mimos and stay during all the festival.
They like attending the show of opening which is always spectacular.
This year, it takes place from end July through early August.
