“Exceeded all expectations!” Can't rate this place highly enough- very tastefully decorated and well outfitted with everything to make for a very comfortable stay. Setting is peaceful and outlook over the vines just beautiful. All the little extras Wendy provides- daily newspaper, gourmet provisions for breakfast, home grown produce just adds to the wonderful experience of staying here. We will be back!

Mapua Heights Cottage - "A gem among gems", Nelson

Mapua cottage

“A Home away From Home!” For our vacation in NZ, we were searching for places to stay that would provide us a good home base where we could be largely self-supported, by cooking our own meals and having more privacy than a hotel. What we got at Mapua Heights was that and much more! The cottage itself was spectacular, with a gorgeous view looking over the Nelson area (amazing sunrises and sunsets!). In fact, it was such a nice, homey place to stay that we occasionally had trouble justifying going out and seeing the sights. Luckily, our wonderful hosts who lived nearby, Ken and Vivien, provided all the information and suggestions for the entire area, and helped us plan our great trip out and about. With Ken and Vivien's hospitality, we felt very much at home, as we would with a pair of good neighbors not too far away! The part that stood out the most was that our hosts allowed us to see what their lives were like as much as we wanted. Ken and Vivien were gracious enough to show us what animals they have on their property and use their kayaks in the nearby inlet. We got to help them sheer their sheep, feed their deer, tour their awesome glowworm colony, and learn about the honey harvested from their bee colonies. I highly recommend Mapua Heights Cottage for those looking to get a more intimate experience with the Nelson area than most hotels and lodges can provide. There were no downsides, and we won't do it any differently when we (hopefully) return one day. Thanks Ken and Vivien!

Karaka Cottage at The Apple Pickers' Cottages, Mapua-Nelson

Bronte cottage

  • 2 bedrooms
  • 1 bathroom
  • sleeps 4

“Beautiful cottage, magic location” We had a fabulous stay at Karaka Cottage. The cottage is lovely - it has everything you could need and is beautifully furnished - a very stylish 'kiwi bach'. The location on the estuary at Mapua is stunning too - totally tranquil, but still close enough to everything (a couple of minutes to the wharf at Mapua, which has some good places to eat) and about a 20 minute drive back to Nelson. It's also on the way to abel Tasman of course - but we were just in the mood to relax, so were quite happy just to enjoy the cottage surrounds. The outside bath was amazing, with just the sound of the many estuary birds for company in the evening. Just perfect! And in the morning, the sun streamed in from across the water - which was gorgeous on a late winter morning. (the cottage is very warm in the winter too - has a great wood burner). Thanks so much - we'll definitely be back!

“Perfect location for an escape from reality” The directions to get to Waiwurrie were perfect, the farmhouse and room we stayed in were wonderful. City-Bush Retreat: Fully Self-catering Private, Serviced Apartment

Waitakere City apartment

  • 1 bedroom
  • 1 bathroom
  • sleeps 2

“A Serene and Magnificent Hideaway” This wonderful apartment, just minutes away from auckland, is our favorite hideaway for settling into New Zealand life following a grueling 14 hour flight from our home country. There is nothing the hosts won't do to ensure a comfortable and warm welcome and ongoing stay (including a fresh supply of "basics" and treats in the refrigerator and cupboard). Situated very privately at the top of an upscale home, this apartment is very tastefully decorated and has all the modern conveniences needed for a "home away from home". When we visit City Bush, we like to eat in and dine out in equal proportions. The small village of Titirangi, within walking distance, or a 5 minute drive from City Bush boasts a few excellent restaurants, or we travel the 20 minutes to the viaduct downtown or to Ponsonsby to take in some of the excellent fare offered by those areas. But we find it truly difficult to leave this accommodation once we arrive. It is the perfect place to unwind. It literally feels as though you are in a "cabin in the woods". Surrounded by the lush, local vegetation (including a commanding view of an ancient kauri tree) and the ongoing sounds of birdsong, it is a perfect retreat.

“What makes a good holiday.” Trying to determine where to stay when planning a holiday is extremely hard when you have never been to a spot. Mary & Peter's was like finding a winning loto ticket in your pants pocket. It is a new place and they have all the added touches such as big screen TV, Movies, Stereo, BBQ and the best of all the most magnificent view you could ever want. We actually felt that we did not have to leave the unit as you could never get a better view and the sun was shining the entire time. They have added a great deal of personal touches to the place that make it a pleasure to stay at. Your hospitality was outstanding and there is nothing negative we could ever add to this experience. Gentlemen this is the place to take your partner for a nice glass of wine and sit on the balcony and watch the view.

About New Zealand

The landscape of New Zealand is similar to movie backdrops. In fact, "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy beautifully showcases this mystical land. With lush rainforests, majestic mountains, golden beaches, and spectacular coastlines, New Zealand provides a wealth of outdoor opportunities to enjoy, such as hiking, mountain climbing, bungee jumping, and whitewater rafting. There is also more wildlife, flora, and fauna than any nature lover could dream of highlighted by the presence of the elusive kiwi, fur seals, and yellow-eyed penguins. There are also several cities here with cosmopolitan flair that showcases excellent arts, culture, dining, entertainment, and shopping. New Zealand is celebrated for being one of the greenest and cleanest countries for eco-tourism, and it has been increasingly making its mark as a wine destination as well.

Here are a few additional suggestions of things to do in New Zealand:

  • Marlborough: This province is world-renowned for its first-class offerings in wine and food. Tours and tastings are available at many of the vineyards, known for producing excellent Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay.
  • The Abel Tasman National Park: This area is an UNESCO-listed site that features some spectacular scenery. The park's highlights include a rocky coastline, beautiful, expansive beaches, and crystal clear waters.

-Mount Cook National Park: Containing over 20 peaks more than 9840-feet-high, this UNESCO World Heritage site showcases breathtaking natural features. Visitors can participate in a number of activities here including skiing and snowboarding as well as guided walking and climbing excursions.

  • Fiordland: This region showcases amazing natural surroundings consisting of several lakes, forests, mountains, and an untouched coast.
  • Hawke's Bay: This is New Zealand's other renowned wine region. Nearly 70 wineries can be found here. Hawke's Bay is praised worldwide for its red wines, especially Pinot Noir.
  • The Egmont National Park: This UNESCO-listed World Heritage area is celebrated for Mount Taranaki, which lies in the park's center. It is inactive volcano that visitors are permitted to climb, if they are up to the challenge.

New Zealand is known for its lush beauty, and a vacation rental in the countryside is the ideal way to experience it all. Whether you are planning a romantic getaway in New Zealand, or booking a trip with family and friends, you are bound to find a rental that is perfect for your next vacation. Because of the spectacular surroundings, camping in New Zealand is a popular activity that both residents and visitors enjoy. Outdoor enthusiasts come to experience hiking in New Zealand, while nature lovers can't wait to set their sights on majestic whales while out in a boat in New Zealand. In this country, there is something for everyone!

Corru Gate at The Gates Accommodation, Mapua
Well set up, comfortable and quirky.

We had a need to be in the Mapua/Ruby Bay region and looked for something which would accommodate us and friends if needed. What a find. Well set up kitchen, dining and living room which are comfortable and create warm spaces. The slight quirkiness of the featured corrugated iron in the bathroom and living area lends real character. The owners were helpful and friendly without being intrusive -- a fine balance. We'll be back.see more

Springston Oasis
This stay was like coming home

We came to Springston after a 3 month round NZ trip. It was just like coming home and Maria was such a lovely and welcoming host, who made sure that nothing was missing. The garden is beautiful and well kept and it is a short drive to Christchurch, Lincoln and Rolleston. I have never slept so well- the beds are so comfy. The kitchen is extremely well equipped, we even had a juicer! If we did not feel like cooking there is a cafe nearby which serves extremely good food too. Overall we had a memorable stay and will stay there again when we cone back to NZ.see more
