We had a very warm welcome from Judi & James in fact due to the inclement weather Judi phoned me prior to departure to inform us that they had no snow the Barn itself was comfortable and the larder was well stocked plus having breakfast supplied for 2 days we found that we were able to cook a full dinner using all the cooking facilities with ease also you are able to tell Judi about any special food requirements and she will get them if available. The dogs were made very welcome and had the use of the garden plus a 8 acre field if required we only wish that the weather had been somewhat warmer but did not stop us going to Whitby for Fish & Chips sat on pier to eat them also got my Kippers we would recommend a stay here as it is good value for money and you are made really welcome will go back again during warmer weather.

We had a weekend break in this cottage in January. The owners live in the cottage next door and were extremely welcoming and helpful. The food cupboards were packed with everything visitors might need to prepare meals in the cottage. Lockton is a small village on the edge of the North Yorkshire Moors and provides the starting point for some lovely walks in the area. The photos show a fireplace with fire tongs etc so we were expecting an open fire or stove but were disappointed to find it is just a "feature" and holds an electric fire. A downside for us was that we prefer a double bed but are not agile enough to get up and down the steepish stairs to the gallery where it is housed. Overall though, a lovely little cottage in a beautiful area. We especially enjoyed walking down the back lanes to the pub for dinner (bring torches to light your way).

The Little Barn is great value for money in a brilliant location.
The rain (flooding in much of the UK at the beginning of the week) didn't stop us getting out and about and exploring the area. I walked miles each day on the moors with the dog, while my husband mountain biked in Dalby Forest, (there is a cycle path from Lockton to the forest so he didn't even have to ride on the main road - for someone with no road sense this was a bonus!) and also he expored the many bridleways on the moors.
Then in the evenings we were able to catch up after our escapades, in the cosy lounge / dining area and plan our next days adventures, while the dog slept soundly at our feet dreaming of all the deer he had spotted during the day.
We were there for 8 days and only used the car a couple of times. Once for a rest day in Whitby (essential trip to get some fresh kippers!), and then for a wander round Pickering (where there is a decent sized Co-op).
We were able to cook some delicious meals in the well laid out kitchen, including some very substantial breakfasts from the ingredients provided. The food cupboard containing basics was an added bonus.
James and Judi were very helpful and accommodating enabling a couple of friends to come and stay with us for the weekend, and ensured that everything was OK without being intrusive.
We have definately got more to do in the area and will be booking a return visit in the future - hopefully when the steam trains are running as I want to get the train further afield and then walk back across the moors.
We have already been recommending The Little Barn to all our dog walking and mountain biking friends. -

This fabulous little haven of peace and calm at the edge of the North York Moors is not to be missed. The generous and capable hosts provide as much provisioning as we have seen in all our travels, including yummy local produce for breakfast and a cupboard full of food to use! The little cottage is set off a courtyard behind their own 17th Century Cottage but our own privacy was total. The kitchen is a challenge but worth conquering as all equipment is present and in great working order. Central heating works really well and the lounge is a delight, with a real cottagey feel. Waking up in the birdfeeders bedroom the window opens onto a mass of birdlife on the lawn and trees. Surrounding moorland gives spectacular views from lookouts and access to the lovely old town of Whitby to the North, with its busy harbour and 8th Century abbey; and to the majestic City of York with its ancient streets and towering Minster. Castle Howard, where the original 'Brideshead Revisited' was filmed, is a short drive through the old market towns of Pickering and Malton and well worth the journey. But most of all the little village of Lockton itself is a real step-back in time and a stroll to its village store across the village cross or to the old Church of St Giles transports one back to a World I thought was gone forever; as does the steam train that runs through the neighbouring village of Levisham. Add a fantastic local pub - the Fox & Rabbit - where wonderful food is served, and you could not ask for more!

Although we only stayed at the Little Barn for 3 nights, it was three nights of pure joy. The weather was kind to us and the company (ie New friends who we had met on a previous holiday)was superb. We found Judy and James Fisk to be most accommodating hosts who were there to greet us on arrival, and gave us a thorough introduction to all
aspects of the Little Barn.
We were delighted with the amazingly well stocked fridge which contained 2 days worth of breakfast food, and cupboards which were also well stocked. We have never experienced anything like that before at any other B & B.
The Little Barn is very quaint and although small, has everything you could possibly need to make your stay unforgettably splendid. There is a comfortable sitting room with a well stocked bookcase, and a TV/DVD player and a selection of Dvd's.
There are 2 bedrooms. The main one is downstairs and has a beautiful view of the garden and the birds on the feeders. The second bedroom is up a very step staircase, so you have to be fairly mobile to negotiate the stairs! The beds are very comfortable.
Downstairs there is a fairly large bathroom with a modern shower.
Because we were lucky with the weather, we were able to sit out in the beautiful, spacious, cottage type garden which was a mass of colour from the many varieties of plants and shrubs. The other delight was the sheer number and variety of birds ever present on the feeders... which were topped up each day by James.
The Little Barn is in the pretty village of Lockton which is about 5 miles from Pickering in North Yorkshire. It is ideally situated for visiting the North Yorkshire moors, including Heartbeat country, and Places on the coast like Whitby and Scarborough which are only a few miles away. York is also fairly close.
All four of us thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and will not hesitate to return in the near future.
Thank you James and Judy. -

My partner and I spent a wonderful 3 nights at The Little Barn at the end of May. Upon arrival we discovered our hosts had filled our fridge with delicious goodies - bacon, sausages, eggs, milk, butter, jams and a whole lot more. There was a well stocked pantry, too. This was not part of the arrangement, just a huge and very generous welcome gift. The Little Barn was clean and everything that we needed was provided. The beds were comfortable - we stayed in the birdwatchers room and it was such a delight to wake up and watch the birds feeding each morning. It was decorated in a very "homey" kind of way, but that just added to its charm. Our hosts Judi and James were friendly and helpful. They loaned us books on the area and walking guides, maps etc. Lockton was a tiny little hamlet but was quite central - lots of good walks close by and only a short drive to Pickering. I would certainly stay there again if I was in the area and would have no hesitation in recommending it to others.

We haven't stayed anywhere as cosy as this in a long time. The property is furnished to a very high specification and spotlessly clean. The beds are ultra comfortable and we had the best night's sleep ever. The kitchen is jampacked full of appliances, pots and crockery. The breakfast materials (very generous) ensure that you don't have to drive around late at night when you arrive looking for milk and eggs- a unique touch. There is a plentiful supply of pasta, canned food etc for quick meals in.
There is a goldmine of information in the property about attractions in the surrounding area. We recommend the drive to Whitby and fish and chips at the Magpie cafe there- not cheap but certainly memorable. Also, there are stunning views whilst driving to Levisham to take the North York Moors railway.
Judi and James were gracious hosts, very welcoming and always accessible. They went out of their way to ensure our comfort, providing a separate bin for our baby's nappies and also finding a travel cot from elsewhere for us.
Mobile reception is practically non-existent but in the end this was a bonus as we had a really peaceful time.
The only downside- we should have booked longer! Next time it will be a week. Hopefully the weather will oblige and we'll be able to enjoy the beautifully tended garden as well. -

We were very comfortable in The Little Barn-very warm and cozy. The beds were comfortable which is number 1 in importance to us. Judi and James were very helpful in giving us info about the area. We were there to walk the moors and Judi loaned us several books and maps of the nearby trails and footpaths. Lockton is an interesting little village and not far from Pickering with lots of history and charm. There were food supplies in the fridge for several breakfasts and for coffee or tea. We look forward to visiting again.

The welcome that we received was truly the best we've ever experienced. The cottage is equiped with everything that you could need. Set in a beautiful village which is peaceful and relaxing but close enough to facilites. The cottage is as close as could be to the Lower Dalby forest mountain biking centre, with a cycle way running along the back of the cottage to connect you to it, secure storage for bikes and a hosepipe to clean them with. There are two great pubs nearby and a very nice coffee shop in the village with a gallery. We're planning to return asap.

We had a great stay in The Little Barn! Beautifully renovated and very comfortable. The cottage has two bedrooms, one downstairs and one upstairs reached by a steep staircase. Children would love the upstairs bedroom!! Kitchen is modern with all you need to self-cater. Judi and James are great hosts and a welcome pack of breakfast items is ready for your arrival, really thoughtful touch, as the nearest shop is quite a way. The cottage is set in a lovely garden and Lockton is a really pretty little village. Location is great too, just off the Whitby to Pickering road. This is the nicest accommodation we've ever stayed in; we were able to take our 2 Birman kittens and our dog as well!!

James and Judi were the perfect hosts. Little Barn was warm, lovely and comfortable. The homely touches of eggs, butter, bacon, sausages, juice and milk in the fridge, bread on the bench, and loads of canned and dried goods in the cupboard were very welcome and a great surprise. We enjoyed a fabulous week staying in The Little Barn. Spotlessly clean, comfortable and well-equipped, it had lots of olde worlde charm and was a great place to come back to after a day's walking. Loved looking out at the birds and the delightful garden from the 'Bird-watchers' bedroom! Also a big thank you to Judi and James - really friendly owners who gave us a great 'breakfast welcome pack' and tips on where to go.
Lockton is a beautiful village with a quaint shop/cafe and some great pubs close by. There was also no shortage of things to do in the area... we recommend Whitby/Sandsend and a trip on the North York Moors Steam Train.

Lovely little barn full of old world charm. The owners, James and Judi, who live nearby, make you feel very welcome, in fact their 'welcome pack' is so generous it lasted us all week! It is very comfortable and spotlessly clean. The only reason I haven't given 5 stars for comfort is because the stairs to the loft bedroom are very steep and would be difficult for some people to negotiate. It is also worth noting that all the beds are single beds so no good for a romantic weekend unless you want to get very cosy!
The situation in the pretty village of Lockton is perfect for exploring the moors and coast. -
