Bed & Breakfast Casa Valeria
Pigna, Liguria, Italy
Additional Location Information
Casa Valeria is situated about 3 kms from the mediaval village of Pigna (meaning pinecone). In fact, the village clings onto the slopes like a pinecone. The mediaval houses are built on top of one another, forming a closely knit fortress. The main streets are cobbled and criss-crossed with narrow alleys and steep paths. It is dominated by the 12th Century Church of San Michele with its Romanesque bell tower. There is much evidence of the long distant past with business, trade and taxes, such as the old square, and the units of measurement carved into the stone.
Artistic Pigna boasts some of Giovanni Canavesio's famous works. He
was active 1450 - 1500.
There are 3 local general stores, a bank, post office, several bars and 3 small restaurants, There is a Drs surgery open in the mornings.
There is a bus service into Ventimiglia, the nearest coastal town which is about 18 kms away. Here is the train station with trains to all parts of Italy, as well as locally to places such as Monte Carlo, Menton, Nice and San Remo. All within an hours distance.
Ventimiglia has a very large open air market every Friday, as well as an impressive fish, fruit, vegetable and flower market every day.
Within easy reach, by car, there are lots of little mediaval villages, all with different characters. At different times of the year there are many festivals covering things such as lavender, brown bread, mushrooms, snails, as well as music, dance, poetry and plays (sometimes in the local dialect). Most of these little villages have nice restaurants serving local specialities.
The area is ideal for walking, climbing, cycling, wildlife, as well as wild mushroom foraying. In one of the local villages caving can be arranged.
There are several natural pools for swimming.
The nearest airport is Nice, which is 75 kms away. We strongly recommend you hire a car.

What Past Guests Are Saying

Cannot recommend it too much!
'Hospitality second to none' says another review. We can't think af a better way to put it. Never have we been welcomed with such warmth anywhere. Thinking back on Valeria and Vilmo and our summer holidays in lovely Pigna makes us long for future stays at Casa Valeria Bed & (very English) Breakfast! We cannot recommend it too much. Go by car and you'll have cultural, historic and (from none to five stars) culinary experiences in reach within a day trip. Look out for wild boar - on the road as well as the menu! A starry night on the balcony is memorable - ven better with a bottle of the local wine Rossese!

What peace and tranquillity!
The views are spectacular, with medieval villages seemingly stuck to mountainsides or strategically placed on high peaks. Each one has a different character, some with narrow winding streets, others with cobbled covered passages and stepped corridors with shops appearing out of nowhere. There are riverside and mountain walks, tales of witches from the past, and numerous places of local refreshment to be found with a totally friendly atmosphere.
All this, and the Italian Riviera only 30 minutes drive away if you fancy a change of tempo.
Val and Vilmo will make you thoroughly welcome, nothing is too much trouble for them, with both Italian and English spoken. Vilmo's outdoor Pizza oven and covered eating area is a must and we recall having breakfast on one occasion whilst looking down on a pair of eagles lazily making their way down the valley just below us.
Due to ill health we have not visited Casa Valeria for some time, but cannot wait to return to this wonderful place in the near future.

A beautiful and peaceful mountain retreat
A very pretty approach to the property which is set in very spacious and lovely gardens. The ensuite accommodation had everything one would expectfrom a very good quality B & B - comfortable bed, plenty of hanging and drawer space for clothes, and modern shower room. There was a superb balcony off the bedroom with patio furniture, and superb mountain views.
The location is stunning - easy to get higher up the mountain for those peaceful treks, not too far from Ventimiglia and the sea, and of course quite close to the little town of Pigna for bars and restaurants.
Valerie and Vilmo are the perfect hosts and their friendliness and hospitality made our stay so enjoyable. We would recommend Casa Valeria to anyone.
A wonderful place to forget all your problems
A delightful villa set above the village with a beautiful garden and breathtaking views of the mountains. A wonderful welcome awaits from Valerie and Vilmo, they are natural and unassuming hosts, nothing seems too much trouble to make your stay as memorable as possible. The surrounding area is great for exploration, a real picture of Italy as it was many years ago, little seems to have changed. The beauty, peace and quiet is the perfect escape route from the bustle of town and city life. San Remo and the Italian coast is not too far away should you feel a need for a change of scenery. What did I love most, hard to say the whole experience gave me the chance to reflect on my life and consider when can I return - thank you Val and Vilmo you helped create this wonderful memory.
Picturesque and peaceful location overlooking Pigna, Casa Valeria has panoramic views across the mountains from the windows of the light and airy bedroom and balcony. Happy memories include breakfast in the garden on a warm morning, sitting under a canopy of ripening grapes, walking round the terraces of olive trees, watching Vilmo making his delicious pizzas at the outdoor oven, Vilmo turning up with large bowls of figs, mushrooms or blackberries that he had picked. Valerie and Vilmo made us very welcome, and their helpfulness and good humour at all times was very much appreciated. We explored several quaint villages with their interesting churches and fascinating alleyways, and enjoyed good meals at various cafe/restaurants. Ventigmilia's market was fun to visit on the bus, and we caught a train just over the border to Menton which is rather 'French Riviera'. We experienced lots of different aspects and I enjoyed all of them!

Delightful B&B; with incredible views and hosts who make you feel like family. Breakfast on the patio looking out over Mt Toraggio, lunch in San Remo, afternoon tea in Menton and dinner in Castel Vittorio across the valley. Great location for exploring the medieval towns that abound or the Italian and French riviera. The Friday market in Ventamiglia is not to be missed. We will definitely be back.

Hospitality second to none. You will not find a friendlier place to stay. Views over the valley are super. I think you need a car but you can get a bus to town of Ventimiglia (forgive spelling)if you don't mind the walk down to the bus stop. Will definitely go back again sooner rather than later. Can thoroughly recommend Casa Valeria, we absolutely love it there. Nothing is too much trouble for Valerie and Vilmo if they can help with anything they will go out of their way to do so. Lovely people, lovely place, lovely rest can't wait to go again.

Peaceful mountain b & b with extremely friendly hosts and incred
We have stayed here 3 times now. We hired at car at Nice airport and drove to Pigna (about an hour and a half) very easy drive through wonderful scenery. Very easy to find. Unbelievable surrounding Italian villages perched on hillsides. Park and wander through narrow streets. Monte Carlo a train ride away along the coast. Val and Vilmo very knowledgable about surrounding area and mountain walks on the doorstep. Plenty of places to visit. A car is needed to go furtherafield. There is a beach about 20 minutes drive away. Rooms very comfortable with superb views and your own balcony to relax on and watch the birds swoop by down to the valley and river below. Breakfasts are plentiful and you might even be treated to a home made pizza in the outside pizza oven. The garlic bread is to die for! I love the 3 cats too. A milion miles from a package holiday. Do your own thing at your own pace and enjoy the quiet and peace. Thoroughly recommended.

First Class stay in a wonderful part of Italy.
Val and Vilmo provided a great service on several stays in Casa Valeria. It was comfortable, quiet, and we were treated to a smashing time. Both hosts ensured our comfort, and we felt their friendly manner, and humour, created a relaxed atmosphere. Vilmo is a great cook too, and the outdoor pizza oven provided many a great meal. The location is very much to our taste - I enjoyed walking on the mountain roads, and making visits to the local towns and villages.
Very friendly poeple, Exelent English braekfast. Very clean location. The best pizza in the World. Thanks for this nice holliday at your place, we come back for shure.

Warm and welcoming B & B with stunning views
From the moment we arrived at Casa Valeria, Val and Vilmo made us most welcome. The room was very comfortable and we couldn't believe the view we had from our balcony. The breakfasts in the morning were very generous. In fact the whole experience was excellent value for money. Casa Valeria is so well situated to explore the area and even to pop over into France! I would highly reccommend Casa Valeria and we hope to return again soon
what a wonderful well come and view
I have stayed twice and each time was a wonderful break. Val and vilmo are such great hosts, nothing was too much trouble. The room and views are just breathtaking and the breakfast in the kitchen or outdoors if warm enough was fantastic. It was such a great spot to be in, in the morning to wake to such a view and the beautiful peace and quiet. It was a fairly easy drive from nice airport and if you miss the turning, you end up in beautiful pigna and just turn around. It is great for walking and visits the local area. When we came in march we went off up into the mountians where the snow still lay, it was a real experience, we had coffee in a place val recommneded, after we had been for a walk in the snow. There is nothing not too like about this place, each time you visit it just grows and grows on you, you do not want to leave. Its just one of those magical places, that you must visit. Val and Vilmo are just so warm and welcoming. if your lloking for that something special then you must visit here.
rest & relaxation at its best!
great hosts - home from home - stunning views.
Vilmo is a typical "mountain man" with superb knowledge of the mountains and special knowledge of mushrooms.
Val is so friendly and nothing is a bother.
If you're lucky enough to encounter one of their pizza nights - you won't forget it.
See you both again in the autumn.
