We stayed at Hil Haven for 10 days in april I now consider this place my home away from home. The location and the décor was amazing. Steps away from the shopping, 5th avenue, restaurants,and beaches.
Lizardo and family were very friendly and kept the place spotless.
Isis the diva dog which someone mention is a delight and so sweet .I missed her after we left We always anticipated her daily visits.
Hilary is by far a very special person and we would like to thank her for making sure we were taken care of.,

I am of two minds about what to say about HilHaven - it is just such a wonderful place - I really don't want it to get too popular. The location is ideal. The ambiance there is magical - you are located in an oasis of trees and flowers and on the other side of the gate is Playa del Carmen and everything you could possibly need. Close by is Mega and WalMart which are both wonderful places to stock up on everything you could ever need for your stay. There is a great market on 30th just around the corner going north from El Fogon and they have a very nice restaurant - you might have a bit of a wait for a table but worth it. Great spot for breakfast.
We have found our absolute favorite restaurants there - and amazingly enough, none of them are on 5th avenue. We love Util Pasta Factory (located on 25th avenue between 30 and 32). Another favorite is Mom's on 30th. It is a funny bar-like atmosphere upstairs on a corner. The owner is always there to greet you. The ribs are out of this world. The steaks are also the very best you will find in Mexico. Then there is Manny's on 4th between 10th and 15th they have wonderful roast prime rib!!! And the schnitzel is out of this world. We tried El Fogon - great (across the street from Mega). Another place we loved was Pesca on 30th (again across from Mega). They have the freshest fish (caught that day) and save room for the pineapple ice cream!! There is also a super breakfast or lunch place called Cueva del Chango (Monkey Cave) and it is located on Calle 38 going towards the beach. Also La Tarraya Restaurant on Calle 2 serves the best shrimp cocktail.
The units at HilHaven are perfect - beds very comfortable, the place is spotless and everything works well. Lizardo and his family are there to make your stay the very best. And then there is Isis - the resident diva dog. She is absolutely the sweetest dog ever and will visit with you every day.Response from Hilary - 05/01/2013

I stayed one of Hilhaven's studio apartment 2a. Upon first entering, I was very much surprised how beautiful the room was. Beautiful artwork, gorgeous tile work, artful details, lamps, books, a full assortment of appliances, very nice pots and pans, and gorgeous glasses - all there for my use. Great hot water, chlorinated and safe. I was very happy.
Hilhaven is located on 1st avenue and is one of the nicest streets in Playa. Just around the corner from 5th avenue and just around the corner from the beach. And centrally located right in the middle of Playa.
I stayed 1½ months and enjoyed what almost felt like my own private house. This room had a great balcony overlooking the avenue.
Hilhaven had great security...a huge always locked gate. And I swear, I could have left my room door unlocked, as I felt so safe and secure there. Lizardo and his family who lived there were very friendly and always there to help...and they kept my room sparkling clean. The entire city of Playa felt extremely safe and secure. I didn't hesitate to take long walks everywhere throughout the city.
The TV had many channels...maybe 80...and I watched English movies (subtitled in Spanish) all through the night many times. There were about 8 English channels, with great movies showing 24/7.
Thank you Hillary for creating such a great First Class hotel in Playa. I miss Hilhaven every day since I returned to 6 inches of snow. My house is very nice, but Playa and Hilhaven is so very special.
I can't recommend Hilhaven enough, and hope to come back next year.

I lived in Playa del Carmen for 5 years, and this was the first time I stayed in a place other than my home. I was pleasantly surprised.
The studio has an amazing location, close to good restaurants, The Gym for daily yoga and the beach one block away.
The studio is beautifully decorated and filled with books :D and the inn-keeper and his family couldn't be nicer or more helpful, and the owner was in touch with me throughout my stay, making sure that everything was ok and that I was having a great vacation.
I am a very light sleeper, and the studio is two blocks away from the night clubs, so... to any other light sleepers out there, bring the ear plugs to quiet down the light noise that can be heard on some nights. I wouldn't think of staying any place else when I come back again.

We had an excellent time here, 150 steps to the beach (I counted) 1 block from 5th ave and the beach. Just steps from nightlife restaurants etc. The unit was just far enough away from the nightclubs to be comfortably quiet, we could only hear a faint thumping occationally but no problems. Cleaning was done every second day by the onsite husband and wife team. Airconditioning worked perfectly and the beds and pillows were as comfortable as home, we will definately consider stayng next year. With the extra high wall at the front and steel locking gate there were no worries about safety.

Me and my friends stayed there during the new year eve, we enjoyed a lot, the apartments are very cozy, very funny and friendly family and very funny dog.
The location is great - 2 minutes walk to street of the parties (12th) and 2 minutes walk to the beach.
All the guests who stayed there with us were very nice and friendly.
I hope to stay there in my next visit in Playa!

Very quaint, well outfitted and comfortable apartment. The personalized artwork and accessories situated about the apartment were wonderful. I also appreciated the care of the couple who were caretakers. Rooms were thoroughly cleaned every day and fresh fruit upon arrival was a nice touch. Great location with beach one block away.

I just returned from my stay at Hilhaven for 5 weeks, having to leave early due to a sick mother. But, I couldn't wait to write this review...the place is fantastic. Let me start with the location. Hilhaven is right up the street from the beach on 1st avenue, and a very close walk to 5th for shopping, eating,drinking, and fun. If you have been to playa before, this part of the beach is very close to the second boat pier which goes to Cozumel. Taking the ferry to Cozumel is also a great way to spend the day. Also, next to Hilhaven is a dive shop, and next to that, a restauraunt called Chabela's for great deals on a quick, cheap lunch or dinner. On the other side, is one of the best retauraunts in Playa, called Imprevist, for a fancier dining experience. Then, of course, if u just walk a few steps, 5th avenue opens up a whole new world of opportunity! Hilhaven is gated and private. Beautiful, colored flooring, plenty of light at night, and a gorgeous jungle type feel. As a women staying alone, I never felt unsafe one minute. The other renters were pleasant, and there were many nights when we would get together on the front patio and chat over a couple cervaza's. The only time I felt unsafe was when I stopped at the 7-11 in Baltimore on my arrival home. My apartment, 2C, was well appointed with everything I needed.The air conditioning was cold, and the water hot if needed. The groundskeeper Lizardo was always available, and his wife Corrina did my laundry for a tip, folding and perfectly wrapping my clothes in a bag. One of the best parts of my stay was a daily visit from Isis, the house dog who is adorable and sweet. I noticed that she got along very well with other visiting dogs staying at Hilhaven, and made friends easily. Hilary, the owner, is wonderful, and easy to work with, actually e-mailing me concerned about how I was doing on my own. I highly recommend Hilary and Hilhaven.

My husband,adult daughter, and I spent 3 very comfortable weeks at Hilhaven. The location couldn't be better for a variety of reasons: 5th ave is around the corner, the beach is a block away, a great dive shop is two doors away, the bus station and colectivo vans to all attractions are within walking distance as are Walmart and Mega, at least two language schools are within walking distance. There are also numerous restaurants and entertainment options conveniently located. We stayed in two different apartments during our stay and both were clean, well equipted, cheerfully decorated, and were supplied with an interesting/eclectic supply of books. If you have to leave your favorite pet at home, no problem, Isis the resident dog will become a regular visitor in no time. Note, doggie treats will speed up the process.
Lazardo and his family were charming and helpful and the other quests were friendly and engaging. A stay at Hilhaven really leaves one feeling that they have had more than a hotel experience in a Mexican resort community. Hilhaven allows one to sense the feeling of being a part of the Playa community. Hilary has created a very special place.Response from Hilary - 01/11/2013

I had an escort to the apartment (it was my first time in Playa & I was lost, literally...)...upon arrival, they helped me with my bags (very top floor w/ multiple staircases). The apt is on the roof & has it's own outdoor furniture, complete w/ swinging chair...upon entering the apt, my jaw dropped from the amazing colorful tile work throughout, the stainless steel spiral staircase & the glass block windows...fully air conditioned and succinctly furnished. Tile shower (no door on bathroom), fully equipped kitchen, big screen tv & comfortable bed. It is centrally located to my some fave bars/restaurants: The Dirty Martini, Babe's Noodle Bar & Mandala. The beach is a block or two away. It was a fine ending to an amazing mexican adventure. This place is perfect for 1, 2, possibly 3 individuals...Thanks Hilhaven!

Tragically, my dog passed away while en route to Mexico and I was quite devastated. I arrived a day late. My hostess Hilary was so supportive and generous. The family that maintains the property was also very sweet. The place was very clean and tranquil. It is close to the loud night clubs but I don't recall being disturbed by noise at night. This place is a perfect location. I was a short distance from Indigo Beach Club (my favorite beach club...not the best beach for swimming but the best staff ever and comfy loungers for reading all day). I am grateful to Hilary for her kindness during this hard time for me. I would definitely stay here again!

I stayed at Hilhaven with my little dog for 3 months.
It was a wonderful place to call home. A welcome treat from the hustle and bustle outside.
Set among a lush tropical garden, the bright coloured walls, Mexican tiles and artifacts set for a peaceful happy ambiance.
Then you have the most helpful, kind and friendly Lizardo and family who go out of their way to make sure you have all your needs met.
Last but not least Isis, the adorable Hilhaven dog, you will fall in love with her.

We stayed and Hilary's place in February 2012 for 8 days. We booked everything online.
I was worried how it would be, as sometimes when you rent places over the internet you don't really know what will yo get until you get to the place.
Apartment was great! Clean, big, 2 bedrooms, 2 baths, 3 beds. WiFi. Lizardo and his wife (housekeepers) cleaned our apartment every day.
And every day we had a timid guest during our breakfast! Her name is Isis and she is the cutest dog in the world!
