San Rafael, CaliforniaSpace for a large family
Left on 06/13/2011 for a stay in April 2011
Eleven of us of various ages (4-65) stayed at this villa, located in gated Playacar I, for a week in april 2011. The place is quite large; accommodating all us easily. There are five bedrooms on three floors with a total of five and one half bathrooms. We rented this villa through Latido de Mexico, who were responsive and helpful to all our needs. If you want to be in a quiet area not too far to PDC, Playacar I is an excellent option.
Layout of House:
Lowest Level
Two bedrooms; one with king bed with small attached bath (shower only) and a second with a queen bed & pull out sofa and small bath just outside room. There is also the laundry area, pool, pool table & bar area with swings
Entrance Level
Three bedrooms all with king beds and attached baths. One bedroom has a small bathroom with shower only, the other two are very large with bathtubs
Main Level
Kitchen, dining, television, half bath
Rooftop
Pool, lounge chairs, BBQ
Pros:
The bedrooms and beds are very comfortable. All of the bedrooms except for one on lowest level are large with attached bathrooms. The one w/o bath is the smallest, but a good size for kids and has a bathroom just outside the room. The downstairs pool is nice and there is a lot of shade, which is great if you need to watch the kids swim. The air conditioning worked really well. You are literally around the block from the beach and in a quiet area too. The beach is beautiful! House-keeping was included for three days and they did an excellent job.
Cons:
The place is a bit outdated in a modern way. There are a lot of stairs, so this is something to note especially for older/bad knee folks. The stove is hard to use. The BBQ needs to be replaced or thoroughly cleaned. There is only one television on the main floor; its small and a bit complicated to setup with all the remotes. While the rooftop area is nice, we could not get the heat to work in the hot tub. They need better beach amenities. The beach chairs were old and there was no cooler or umbrella. The lounge chairs around the lower level pool were broken.
General comments:
We had Latido buy us items to stock the fridge for our arrival and they did a good job. However, you can easily take a 5 minute ride to Walmart when you settled to buy everything you need.
We were told upon booking we could pay a discounted rate to use the Reef Playacar facilities for the day. The Reef is about a half mile walk from the villa. However, the Reef said we needed residency cards proving we were staying in Playacar. There were none located in the house. I admit we made a fuss, but Monica at Latido was eventually able to loan us some. Make sure you check on this issue if you want to use the Reef.
Town is about a mile walk. At first it seemed a trek, but about two days in, we really enjoyed walking (good exercise). Its also nice to walk home on the beach at night. Taxis are easy to come by otherwise. If you want a taxi to go into town, just call the gate to order you one.
Pdc is as much kid friendly as it is adult. It offers a wealth of excellent restaurants (see my review for La Mission) and bars, but there is also a lot of entertainment on pedestrian only 5th avenue for the kids to enjoy. Every night we got ice cream and people watched. There are of course lots of americans, but people from all over too. The Mexicans are warm and friendly and hold up surprisingly well to the mass of tourists. Yes, you will find hawkers galore, but you just learn to walk by and/or say no gracias.
I would recommend this place for a large family and I would certainly used Latido de Mexico again to reserve.
