Casa Ultima Review, Playa Grande Costa Rica
What an incredible place to stay. The owners Terry and alan are the most gracious warm people you could ever hope to encounter. For instance, we needed to recharge our batteries, and voila, they provided us with a charger. And more than that, they gave us a whole pack of batteries to use just in case it didn’t work. We had a leaky faucet in our bedroom bathroom and the next day we had a brand new one. They let us borrow their cell phone when we went out and about and they even helped us reserve our day of adventure when we did a canopy tour. (I will write about that separately)
The positives: Pretty much everything. The house has an unusual setup. The downstairs which can act as its own unit had a master bedroom with a queen size bed and a bathroom. The living room had a full size bed and a twin bed as well. There is also an additional full bathroom with a shower in the living room. Since our kids are older this was ideal because they each had their own space. And of course there is a full kitchen, sliders to a patio and a pass through from the kitchen to the outside as well as a hammock. Walk beyond the gate and you are on one of the most impressive beaches ever consisting of fine sand, gorgeous scenery and a sunset to die for every single night at 6pm. Surfers come from all over to surf the waves here and we were extremely happy to just boogie board!
The upstairs unit is exactly the same except the master bedroom has a king size bed and the living room only has a single bed which we used as a couch. The kitchen was in slightly better condition than the downstairs and there was also a patio with a view most people can only dream about. The bed was very comfortable and the air conditioning worked really well.
Roof deck patio: We made a point to go up every night and make smoothies at the bar up there. There is also an outdoor bathroom with no walls. Pretty fun! The sunset is breathtaking from there and there is another hammock to relax some more.
The negatives: The only negative I can think of was the a/C in the downstairs living room didn’t work as well as the other ones.
Advice: No need to hesitate about staying here. It was awesome. We were so sad when our week was over. Bring bug spray with you for the evenings because as soon as the sun goes down the mosquitos come out. There are dragon flies too but they don’t bother you. And it’s warm in Costa Rica and very casual. No need for dressy clothes at all! Bermuda shorts for men with flip flops and sundresses or the same for women! The food in the nearby town was excellent and we tried almost all the restaurants.
Also, it’s not 100 percent necessary to rent a car but I think it makes life incredibly easy especially at night. The roads are dark as they are protecting the turtles there and the mosquitos come out. Also, make sure to walk over to the black sand beach and bring sandals! -

Rented the "casita" but was upgraded to the main house for a few days. Main house is very nice, relaxing, right on the beach, and the owner was very low key and accommodating. Casita in back (across the courtyard) was funkier but still nice. It was a great place to stay for attending a destination wedding.

Terry and alan were wonderful landlords, as they were personable and attentive to our needs and helpful with recommendations for local restaurants and activities. There were many family members in our group for this vacation and we all loved the house, setting and alan and Terry. The house was gorgeous, clean and what a fantastic setting! It was close and within walking distance to Tamarindo for shopping and restaurants. We went on a snorkeling excursion which was a half day fun trip for the family. We would love to go back to Costa Rica for another vacation and we would definitely choose to stay at Casa Ultima in a minute!

SacramentoYour Own Private Paradise
Left on 05/04/2012 for a stay in February 2012
I can't begin to explain how beautiful and relaxing this location was. It is practically your own private beach. Every morning I opened the curtains and laid in bed stairing at the ocean. The hammock and I also became very close friends. The house was clean and had everything we needed. We cooked sometimes when we didn't feel like going to one of the many excellent restaurants in the neighborhood. Finally, the owners Terry and alan were incredible! They were so kind and helpful. They made this a trip of a lifetime. I would not hesitate to go back. If you are looking for your own private paradise, this should be your choice.

Our stay at Playa Grande was absolutely perfect. The setting (beach right out our door) could not have been better, and the general environs were as "low key" as we'd hoped for. We alternated between just hanging there for the day (doing beach things or walking to the near-by town), and exploring other areas of the country (not enough time to do that justice, but we so enjoyed our "home" at Playa Grande, that we didn't want to leave it!). The house was very comfortable and we loved the Oshaughnessys, who were always available to help with any questions or suggestions, but were never "underfoot." This place offered the best beach-walking I've ever experienced and the only very minor complaint I can offer is that (and I am notorious for getting lost anywhere and everywhere) while walking back from a long walk, it can be challenging to identify which house is "yours." Thankfully there are/were friendly neighbors who "retrieved" me and delivered my back to my home!
