“Great villa and location” We had such a wonderful, relaxing stay at Casa Margarita. The villa is spacious and clean, with a great terraced outside area with beautiful views, and a nice pool for cooling down. Lounging after a day at the beach, looking out at the sunset over the Pacific (with a cocktail in hand) has to be one of life's great experiences! Pete and Maggie were very helpful in terms of advice and tips in advance of our trip out there. We went snorkelling, fishing, diving, went on the zip line tour, and spent lots of time on Samara and Carillo beaches (both quiet and beautiful). The wildlife was also a real highlight - particularly the monkeys and hummingbirds

“Great place to relax” We (2 persons) stayed at La Villa Blanca from Dec. 9th-16th. The house is beautiful, located in the middle or S?mara just 2 minutes walk to the beach. Everything was clean and nicely furnished, with a big american style kitchen and enough space to relax and enjoy the sun. Additionally, Quinn and Monika gave us very helpful information on restaurants, Canopy and surfing (thanks for that). Overall, La Villa Blanca is a wonderful place to stay.

About Playa Samara, Costa Rica
A three-mile-long, uncrowded beach with soft tan sand balancing on a gentle slope and surrounded by palm trees, Samara Beach is one of the best in Guanacaste Province on the northern Pacific coast of Costa Rica.
A tropical paradise, the water is warm and first-class for swimming in. At low tide, it's safe for little ones and at high tide, provides superb surfing waves for those who enjoy a bit of waterboard balancing. There are even lots of rock pools to go searching in for sea life and unusual shells. For those who enjoy snorkeling, the nearby beach of Matapalo is a top spot as it's quieter than Playa Samara.
Originally part of Nicaragua, the province of Guanacaste voted to become part of Costa Rica back in 1825. The original settlers were known as Chorotegas. Famed for their pottery—which can still be found today—they mainly grew corn.
What to do in Playa Samara, Costa Rica
Look for monkeys, porcupines and owls at The Werner-Sauter Biological Reserve. The 140-hectare private reserve offers guided treks and spectacular views of the beach and forest.
A 20-minute drive from Samara will bring you to the Belen Waterfall. Very non-touristy, this spot is unmarked and accessible only via a dirt pathway. Certainly a hidden gem in this area!
Take stand-up paddle boarding (SUP), kayaking and surfing lessons on the beach. Or, try some 'celeb spotting' on deserted Playa Barrigona beach nearby—it's the home of actor Mel Gibson and can be reached via a trek along dirt roads.
Divers and snorkelers can spot white-tip reef sharks, snapper and even hammerhead sharks on a guided tour of Isla Chora.
One of the most spectacular sights here are the wild horses that roam the beach. You can even go horseback riding around the area for just $50.
Try the local dish known as Casado. It's a meat or fish dish with rice, beans, salad, vegetables and fried plantains.
Top travel tips for Playa Samara, Costa Rica
The prime nesting season for turtles is during the rainy season from May right through to November. Guides usually alert locals and tourists when they appear on the beaches.
Driving at night in Costa Rica can be difficult since the roads are bad and there are no street lights. Arrive in the day to avoid this.
Public buses run between Sámara and the city of Nicoya. The express bus line Empresa Alfaro connects Sámara with the capital San Jose. You can also fly to Carrillo Airport which is just five miles from Samara. The drive from Liberia is two hours, from San Jose it’s four hours and five by bus.
Playa Samara is a pretty village with several restaurants, shops and hotels, but it is dwarfed by its beach in terms of the reason people come here. This is a great beach getaway resort, not yet overrun by tourists, so still manages to preserve a bit of a backwater, non-commercial vibe.
