Additional Location Information
Cliff Waters Cottage is located on the sunset side of the island in Pleasant Bay, a small fishing village with a year round population of about 120 residents. The town is bordered by the Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Wilderness Protected areas, and water of the Gulf of St. Lawrence, making it a small hub of activity in a vastly wild landscape.
Much of the attraction of Cape Breton, and particularly the Cabot Trail lies in a section of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park between Cheticamp and Pleasant Bay. This is where many visitors find the best hiking trails, photo opportunities, wildlife and sunsets. Positioning yourself in Pleasant Bay not only allows you immediate access to this popular portion of the Cabot Trail and the National Park and all that it has to offer, but also to the more northerly sections of the trail and the park between Pleasant Bay and Ingonish.
In the park there are over 25 hiking trails, several beaches, waterfalls, historic sites and many scenic look-offs.
Pleasant Bay has a world famous hiking trail, the Pollett's Cove hiking trail, said to be one of the most beautiful places in the world. Pollett's Cove was at one time a small settlement almost a century ago. The trail is 19km return, crosses two rivers and is of moderate difficulty. Today, local farmers set their horses and cattle out to pasture in this former settlement, carving out an idyllic pasture in this otherwise incredibly rugged and scenic landscape.
The waters off of Pleasant Bay have been ranked as the best place in Atlantic Canada to see whales. There is a whale interpretive centre where you may familiarize yourself with the many whales off our coast. Four whale tour operators offer both the traditional Cape Islander style and zodiacs whale tours. Tours depart frequently throughout the day, and prices vary from $30-45 per person.
Pleasant Bay is home to Gampo Abbey Buddhist Monastery and the Stupa of Enlightenment. Built in 1984, Gampo Abbey is a Western Buddhist monastery which operates in the Shambhala tradition. The Abbey hosts between 15 and 30 full time residents who come from all over the world to study for different lengths of time. Some are lifetime monastics, while others take temporary wows while they explore in the study of Western Buddhism. Tours of the Abbey operate daily though the summer where you may gain insight into the life of a monastic, visit the shrine room, or take a moment to meditate in the serenity and lushness of the Abbey grounds.
Cliff Waters Cottage itself is located 6 km off of the Cabot Trail along on a quiet dirt road. The cottage sits on 89 acres that span close to one km of oceanfront. The cottage is very private, with no houses, roof lines, neighbours or traffic to interrupt the peace and serenity or the view. With it's location perched on the side of a mountain, overlooking the ocean, mountains and sunsets, the view of the national park, Gulf of St. Lawrence, the coastline and the setting sun are ever changing and spell binding. While there is much to do in the area, you may retreat from the world and do nothing but look at the breath taking scenery from dawn until dusk. There is a quiet beach at the bottom of the hill where you can enjoy both river and ocean swimming as well as evening bonfires.
Cliff Waters Cottage is:
6 km off the Cabot Trail;
7 km from whale tours and Whale Interpretive Centre;
8 km from the Cape Breton Highlands National Park;
3 km from the Gampo Abbey Buddhist Monastery;
4 km from the 19km return Pollett's Cove hiking trail;
45 minute drive to the Acadian village of Cheticamp
30 minute drive to Cape North
Pleasant Bay has three restaurants, one take out, one gift shop, a folk art studio, a whale interpretive centre, four whale tour operators, one general store and post office, two motels and three bed and breakfasts.
The cottage suits a couple or a small family perfectly. We also offer a recently renovated farmhouse on a different property closer in town to the Cabot Trail for larger groups or families (Sleeps 7).

TorontoA cottage with an amazing view and wonderful hosts.
Left on 02/27/2013 for a stay in September 2011
Our vacation to Cliff Waters was a highlight vacation that we will always remember. My husband and I wished we would've stayed longer because 2.5 days was not enough. Niki was a wonderful host who went beyond our expectations. She let us know about a great hiking opportunity just down the road (Pollett's Cove), she personally took us on a wild blueberry picking adventure, and she introduced us to a local gardener where we could buy some vegetables.
We still have the pictures on rotation on our screen saver because they were all such memorable experiences. The Pollett's Cove hiking trail may not be part of the National Park, but the hiking was beautiful and challenging with many rewarding views.
The cottage has a beautiful view of the bay and it's so close to the beach. There's a lovely porch overlooking the ocean and if the weather doesn't permit, you can sit inside and enjoy the same view through the large window. Everything that we needed was available to us, even a lobster pot! We'll have to make some lobster next time. There's so much to do, next time we'll plan a longer stay!

You guys were great to be so open to doing some of the suggestions I put forth. There are so many fantastic things to do around here, and it's sad that many people come all this way, but are in such a rush to 'see' the Cabot Trail that they don't truly get to 'experience' it. That you took the time (and the effort) to go out to Pollett's Cove, and to also go way off the beaten track with me to pick wild blueberries and get some fresh veggies straight off the vine was absolutely terrific in my view. I'm happy to know that we were able to add to your experience, and that you have lasting memories. That means a lot to me - because that is exactly why we do what we do - we want to share this part of the world with you and others. And in turn we are fortunate enough to have enriched memories too that we can think back on. Thank you.

Our hosts welcomed us with bottle of wine, fresh rhubarb and baked goods.
Day after our arrival we were visited by pod of seals seen from deck: they stayed most of the week. Whales also observed in the bay. Property centrally located for hiking and scenic drives.
This was our second visit to Pleasant Bay area: had outstanding whale watching tours both visits.
Cliff Water Property was clean, relaxing, and equipped to meet all our needs.My husband and I enjoyed our week: would be suitable for small family. I walked alone on road in front of property and felt safe.
The best part of our visit to Pleasant Bay was the new friends we made: our hosts Niki and Jeremy Pike and their lovely children.Response from Niki Pike - 03/16/2013

Thank you for your kind words. The pleasure was all ours in meeting you both. I often think back to the stories you shared with of us your life. My grandmother always tells me - strangers are only friends you haven't met yet. And in my life this has often held true. Thank you for visiting our part of the world and offering us your gift of friendship.

Mechanicsburg, PAAbsolutely loved it!

I stayed at Cliff Waters in the midst of winter and got to experience Cape Breton at its wintery best. Cliff Waters was a warm, cozy home that gave me just the experience I wanted. It is the perfect balance of being convenient to the Cabot Trail, but away from neighboring houses. Niki is a wonderful host and provided the home with all I needed-- wood for the stove, comfortable furnishings, a totally cool stone chess set, and a welcome gift of fresh baked bread and wine. I loved the home with all of its wood paneling. Leaving it at the end of the stay was very hard. I will be back!

You guys were such troopers coming up here during a winter storm! And we were floored that you came all the way from PA to spend New Year's Eve at Cliff Waters. Thanks so much - you are definitely an inspiration to us in getting out and making the most of winter! Hope to see you again!

Cliff Waters Cottage is perched at the foot of the mountains and overlooks a huge expanse of sea. You feel isolated in a gorgeous area of the province. Great sunsets. Hiking trails nearby. The owners let you know there favourite nearby places, which you would never find on your own, and they are truly astounding. The cottage is very comfortable, the wood stove is ready to light, and it even has wireless. Very, very comfortable. My wife and I are artists and where the cottage is centrally located right by the Cape Breton Highlands we were able to travel quickly and easily to all the fabulous trails and locations there. We really enjoyed ourself and without hesitation highly recommend it to anyone looking to relax and recharge. We can't wait to go back!

You guys are not only artists - but Susan, you are a great artist! Little did I know that we have one of your books at our place - "A Fiddle for Angus" - it's one of my children's favorites. I hadn't made the connection until a mutual friend told me about you. Great work! We'd love to have you back.

We stayed at Cliff Waters for a week and had an amazing vacation! The owners, Niki and Jeremy, offered unrivaled hospitality. The cottage was comfortably furnished, bright, open and set up to have everything we could need and more. The location is an outdoor paradise. We were able to step out of the door and hike for hours or hop on a road bike for heart pounding rides with breath taking views. With just a few minutes of driving we were on the Cabot Trail where we visited the park or drove to other destinations on the island. We enjoyed soaking our tired legs in the river just below the cottage and whipping up dinners of fresh seafood you can buy from the docks. We finished our days relaxing on the large deck while absorbing the awesome views, sunsets, and wildlife. Don't hesitate!

Every morning when I woke up, the first thing that came to mind was "Wow! It doesn't get any better than this.†Cliffwaters is a great place to de-stress and rejuvenate. You're embedded in a magnificent panorama of mountains and forests and the bluest of ocean that stretches into endless sky. I enjoyed sitting on the deck eating breakfast and watching gannets dive for fish, whales surf, eagles float by and the occasional curious moose observing me while nibbling tree branches. There are plenty of activities for nature lovers to get involved in. I loved the pine cottage with its unique and comfortable furnishings and well-chosen works of art by local artists. I look forward to returning to Cliffwaters.

Whenever I clean the cottage, I always have to stop for a minute and take in the silence and the view and watch the gannets diving into the endless ocean, hear the birds rustling and chirping in the bushes, feel the warm sun on my skin and absorb the magnitude of the ocean and the sky and the mountains. Thank you, I am so happy to see you put the way we feel into words - it just simply doesn't get any better than this.
