Well, its hard to describe, but Merlin's Cottage at angles Rest is an experience we will not forget, a wonderful three day stop in this special place, and not least because of the kindness and hospitality of Hannes. The fresh eggs (literally collected from the hens), the home made jam (we recommend the tomato jam...really), sitting around the fire pit with the lights off and a million stars above, as Hannes story telling brought the local characters and all the animals to life. Feeding carrots to the horses, sitting at the lily pond. If its absolute luxury you crave this probably is not for you, but for us it was a wonderful and unforgettable few days.

      Our Rest with the angels

What a glorius time spent at angels Rest.
The warm welcome, the hospitality and the generous nature of our hosts leaves us with a desire to return as soon as possible.
Agnes lost her fear of the gentlest roaming horses only to discover their beautiful souls. Bert enjoyed his first South african braai under the stars. Anita rediscovered her youth by visiting all over the farm and just loved the chickens.
We all had a refreshing rest and found our souls after only two days.
We will be back for sure.

      Tranquil retreat!

Left on 03/13/2013 for a stay in March 2013

The cabin is set in a lovely farm, and we were surrounded by free-roaming horses throughout our stay. To say it was relaxing is an understatement! The cabin/cottage has everything you need, the addition of a fire in the main room is great and of course the use of the outside braii is an added bonus. Elizabeth and Hannes were extremely welcoming and helpful. Well placed for Plettenburg Bay. Looking forward to returning!

Left on 02/21/2013 for a stay in January 2013

The cottage very close to the main highway on the garden route yet feels away from it all. The cottage is extremely spacious with lots of windows. The hosts were extremely welcoming and hospitable. The horses that roam around make the stay very special. We found the cottage to be excellent value for money.

      A home away from home

Left on 01/24/2013 for a stay in December 2012

After a long drive from Johannesburg, all the tiredness was washed away by the sheer beauty of the farm. We were warmly welcomed by Liz with a basket of fresh free range eggs. The cottage is very spacious and beautifully decorated. I brought some of my favourite kitchen utensils with and they went back unused as the kitchen is very well equiped. Having the horses coming and greeting us in the morning was a real treat. My girls loved the way they would appear at the door looking for carrots or peer in at the window to see where they were. By the time we left we knew all their names and each had our favourite. The Merlin Cottage book was reffered to all the time to identify the horses, flowers and birds.

We were all very sad to leave, my heart was definately left behind. We were barely out the gate and were already planning our next visit. Thank you so much Liz and Hannes for being able to share your dream for a while.

      Where's the carrots? Bliss!

Merlins Cottage is fab. Only 10 minutes drive from Plett and 20mins from Knysna. We stayed for 7 nights and used it as a base. Its great to have the horses come round the veranda looking to be petted and fed carrots. The horses also nudge the window in the morning hoping you'll open it and give them some attention. Look out for Mya, she's the "boss" as my daughter described her :).
Liz and Hanes were very friendly & helpful. We had fresh eggs & herbs on arrival. There are useful essentials in the well equipped kitchen such as spices, jams etc that come in really useful when self catering. Merlins Cottage is fresh, bright, clean, spacious, a perfect rental. Lots of woodland to walk around and explore. super peaceful. It set the standard for the rest of our holiday. We travel frequently and have fairly high expectations, so Merlins Cottage is recommended, we would definitely return if we're back in the area.

Left on 04/18/2012 for a stay in April 2012

From the moment we arrived we were made to feel welcome by Liz, Hannes. They were both very helpful and made us feel at home immediately as did the dogs, horses and chickens! We woke up on our first morning to a fabulous view of the farm, complimented by the horses quietly greeting us to the day. Merlins Cottage was perfect for us and we felt very relaxed and comfortable during our stay there. Liz and Hannes were very knowledgable about what we could do during our stay and we enjoyed many day trips - the highlight for my son Ben(10) was walking and riding the elephants. We left Plettenburg with many, many happy memories. Thank you Liz and Hannes for making our stay so perfect. I truly believe that there are not enough words to describe how angels Rest Farm makes you feel - you have to visit it and then you can feel the magic. I am already looking forward to my next visit - and I will be bringing other family members with me. Liz and Hannes - what you have both done here is truely beautiful and thank you for sharing this with us.

We stayed a few days and would love to be able to spend at least a month there. It would be ideal for writing that novel, preparing for a painting exhibition or simply getting away from it all and re-charge tired batteries.

The cabin is surrounded by trees and the horses come right up, you have to keep the door closed otherwise they will enter the cabin. We had the best nights sleep as it is so quiet and the beds are comfy. There is a watering hole which is well worth keeping an eye on.

We loved the cottage. The horses were all friendly and added a nice touch. Cabin was well appointed with loads of books and guides. The beds and furniture were comfortable and the amenities were good such as kitchen, fridge etc.

We would stay longer next time.

A little bit of extra lighting in the living areas for the evenings would have been good. Internet access was super and we played internet radio through our laptop.

Left on 05/04/2011 for a stay in April 2011

The moment you arrive, the peace and serenity of the place flows deep into your soul. The cottage is very comfortable, cosy and lovely. And yay for no TV! Time is spent reading, playing boardgames or exploring the area. At angel's Rest the horses kept the kids entertained as well as collecting wood for the braai! There is a lot to do in the Plettenberg Bay, Knysna area as well.

I really enjoyed the home-made cherry tomato and cinnamon jam that Liz and Hannes made. It was also a great treat to make a delicious breakfast with the eggs (collected from the chickens on the farm) that Liz brought in a basket when we arrived.

Simplicity is a good word to describe the experience. I can with all honesty say that this was my best family getaway ever. Thank you Liz and Hannes - hope to see you again soon!

Angels Rest truly is one of the most special places our family has stayed at.It's magical waking to the sound of horses grazing, watching the foals play and simply enjoying everything nature has to offer.

Liz and Hannes are wonderful hosts. Liz's attention to detail is extraordinary.

Our family has always mainted the philosophy that we'll never vacation at the same place more than once. Angels Rest is the only exception!

I was doing work at a township nearby (cofounded by the owner of the retreat house), and stayed at the retreat house at night. After intense days in South africa, Angels rest provided a wonderful place to come home to, with our own kitchen, two bedrooms, and fireplace. It was amazing tow ake up in the morning and see horses grazing on the grass, and geeze by the pond. There is also a beautiful creek you can walk to. I loved staying here and highly recommend it!!

A magical and peaceful cottage tucked away by the beautiful forest. Only a few minutes drive from a stunning coastline with the most spectacular views and beaches.
The cottage is spacious and homely. The hosts, Liz and Hanz are friendly and welcoming, and cater for your every need. Their comprehensive local knowledge ensures you get the most out of your stay. As a special treat ask Hanz to cook for you one evening. The porcini mushrooms (grown wild on the farm) or Bbqs are a must!
In short a heavenly and peaceful place to enjoy or use as a base for exploring the beautiful surrounds.

Absolutly amazing place, anything that I write here can not do it full justice. The cottage sits on top of a quiet hill which overlooks Liz and Hans picturesque farm. Liz and Hans were fantastically welcoming, Hans is also a dab hand in the kitchen so ask him for any culinary/Braai advice! The cottage itself is comfortable and very relaxing, the balcony is a great place to chill out during the evenings. I have so many great memories...horses playing around the farm, great bbqs, tomato jam plus so many more! Thankyou Liz and Hans, I will never forget angels Rest Farm.
