Had a wonderful time at Kuhio Shores. The condo was well designed and decorated and had wonderful views of the ocean. Watched the whales every evening while cooking dinner and the spectacular sunset views were amazing. Highly recommended for anyone who doesn't want the highly populated tourist areas to stay at.

As a business owner I appreciated Great Vactions branding; from the soap and shampoo pump bottles to the shopping bag of goodies that was left us. The folder of current local information was very useful. It was set in my mind that Great Vactions was taking care of us. Great job. Every interaction was sunshine; phone, email and in person.
Kuhio Shores is the prfect location for these empty nesters. I don't believe this location would be suiting for young families. It took 4 minutes from the time we shut the condo door until we were snorkeling. It was a great relief to not have to figure out what to do with the key; loved the keyless entry. Whale, turtle, surfer and sunset watching from our lani was a true pleasure. Especially since it snowed 20 inches at home while we were in paradise.
The unit had almost everything we needed. Had to buy a blender; don't know how to have fruity tropical drinks without one. The unit is clean and well supplied. Newer furniture and ammenities. Did not notice any street noice. Never heard noice from the Beach House either. Stayed at few condos where using the BBQ grills put your life in danger. Not here, they were clean and well maintained. The only complaint I can come up with was; not enough towels. Having to do laundry and pay $4 a load was somewhat frustrating and probably petty.
We will be back and Kuhio Shores #416 and Great Vactions will be the first place we look. -

We have rented condos all over the world. This condo: The location can't be beat. If we were any closer to the ocean we would be in it. Easy to get anywhere on the island from here. Best snorkeling on the island is right next door. Same for a great restaurant. Great Vacation Retreats provided very good supplies and did everything right. The owners of condo 416 - not so much. The condo didn't have much in the way of amenities and wasn't supplied well with things used in the kitchen. The TV is too small and hasn't enough sound to be heard over the waves. Living room needs more funiture and better seating. The master bedroom needs a window treatment that will let the air flow through at night but still provide privacy from the walkway outside the window. Just seemed like the owners were cheaping it. We would stay at Kahio Shores Condos again, just not in unit 416.

Great view of ocean, surfers and turtles. Accomodations were of average cleanliness. Ants in kitchen. Next time I would rent a place with a bit more of a resort feel, maybe some place with a pool... Had an elevator but no a/c. We rented a car separately at the airport. Would have liked some chairs to sit at out on the lawn.

Our stay with you at Kuhio Shore was fabulous. The condo was just like the pictures showed. Watching the surfers and turtles from the lanai was wonderful. The beach next door was great for snorkeling. Having a car pick us up at the airport was a treat. The Beach House restaurant next door is a must but there are so many great choices to eat. We are already planning our next trip.

We stayed at Kuhio Shores #416 in June. Condo was perfect for a couple. It was clean and comfortable and you can't get any closer to the ocean. We spent a lot of time on the lanai listing to the surf and watching the turtles, surfers and occasional pod of spinner dolphins. Kuhio Shores is a quite location. We never heard the traffic or clatter coming from the "Beach House". Condo was well stocked with the essentials and even had beach chairs, swim noodles and bamboo beach matt. Booked a Jeep rental with Lou at the same time as booking condo. Thanks to Lou for the personal service. The only negative is the electronic lock. It was nice not worrying about keys to the door but the electronic lock normally required several tries before it unlocked. We definately recommend this unit for two persons

Northern CaliforniaCondo was overpriced and under maintained compared to ks condos.
Left on 04/03/2011 for a stay in March 2011
Condo 416 was full of knats and misquitos at arrival due to windows and slider screens not properly installed. Kitchen had no hot pads. Bedroom ceiling fan speed was on high with no way to change the speed. Tv is to small for such a large living room and the remote would not allow you to turn on the Closed Caption. Light above dining area window was to low and we kept hitting our head. Window in dining area leaked water when it rained. Bathroom sink faucet leaks when turned on. Lanai was unusable due to the knats and misquitos but a ceiling fan would help. Furniture was missing that showed on the website photo's and it gave the living room a very stark appearance.

Aloha
I hesitated to respond to this review and hope that others will look at the positive reviews on this property. It is not a totally remodeled condo and not advertised as such, but it is well kept and we listen and provide all of the items that guests ask for. I am unable to control the mosquitos on the lanai but we do have the interior of the property sprayed quarterly for pests. Sometimes when it rains a lot there are and abundance of knats and mosquitoes in Kauai due to the tropical environment. At Kuhio Shores it is not normally an issue because you are so close to the ocean.
We did go and review all of the items to see what needed to be fixed and have replaced the bathroom faucet. The reason that the furnishings are different was due to reviews from other guests that did not like the trundle daybed couch that was previously in the living room. They had said that they would prefer a regular couch and so we put one one in.
Most properties do not have hot pads in them as they get burnt and very dirty easily but because it is requested we will put them in.
I believe that the leak was due to an open slatted window by the dining room table as we were unable to find any other leaks.
Hopefully this will not overshadow all of the other good reviews of this property and we welcome and other comments and suggestions.

Left on 04/03/2011 for a stay in March 2011
This was a wonderful place to take our honeymoon. The condo was quiet and private and we loved sitting on the lanai watching the turtles, whales, fisherman and surfers. The condo was well furnished, except it desperately needs a non stick frying pan. We got a condo so we could eat in a lot and it was a challenge with just one small pan that everything stuck to. We did have some small bugs in the kitchen too. Not a lot, but still... Also, the front door keypad lock usually took 3 tries to open the door. But everything else more than made up for these little problems, it just would have been perfect perfect without them. The car was a fun treat too. We drove around most of the time with the top down. The condo location is ideal for couples who want privacy. I do wish the lanai was the full width of the condo. That west wall cuts the view quite a bit from the lanai and from the eating area inside. But it was private and there were not a lot of people walking around outside. We went to O'ahu after this. It just doesn't compare! We'll definitely try to make it back to Kaua'i. So peaceful and beautiful. Thanks for a wonderful trip!

Great Vacations Retreat had excellent customer service, made good recommendations and rental car provisions.
The condo we had did not have a/C, but in November, it was fine. May be a bit uncomfortable in the summer.
Kuhio Shore's location is great for a "home base". Can go to Waimea Canyon easily as well as over to the East coast. The Beach House restaurant next door was a wonderful place for a special sunset dinner.

St. Louis, MOCondo needs work - updating unit as well as furnishings.
Left on 03/24/2010 for a stay in March 2010
The unit's kitchen is very outdated - -very small range - - burners don't even sit level so cooking something evenly is not possible. Cabinets are very old - - most of them don't close evenly - - a piece of plastic covers 80% of a space between the counter & stove to help prevent food from falling into the space. Living Room - - screen door to lanai does not work - all screens are warped and let bugs fly in. No couch - only a day bed which is not comfortable to sit in due to fact there is no back. Only chair was old and worn. TV outdated - small and located by sliding room to ocean so impossible to hear the TV when trying to sit on the daybed to watch. We have stayed in probably 6 or 7 other units at Kuhio Shores that were in much better shape - - furnishings as well as being updated. I don't think this unit has been updated for quite some time.
Regarding Amy @ Great Vacation Retreats - she was great - very accommodating and even called us @ 5:45AM to let us know we had to evacuate for the
possible tsunami resulting from Chile's earthquake. I asked Amy if she didn't have a nicer unit we could reserve for next year, but unfortunately she did not.Response from Great Vacation Retreats - 03/25/2010

Hi Bonnie,
Thanks for your review. We are in the process of making some updates to the property. I will also pass this onto the owners for review as it helps to hear things from a guests point of view.
All the screens are being fixed right now and we are waiting on new window covering, paint and some kitchen updates.
Again - appreciate your response as that is the only way we can improve.
I know I didn't have anything open for your dates next year but please keep me in mind for future visits!

Actually, you can't beat the view. It's a great location, and I would recommend it. However, as I'm sure you know, the kitchen is in great need of updating--both appliances, pots & pans, and dishes. A new refrigerator was being delivered as we left, so maybe this is in the works. We would definitely stay again The amenities were great.

Los Angeles, CalifornaGreat situation.
Left on 01/28/2010 for a stay in December 2009
The view is marvelous: Turtles, surfers, and sunsets. You literally sit on the water's edge. Also, provided you have a car, Kuhio Shores is well located for other activities. The situation made it a very enjoyable week.
The unit itself is spacious for a 1 bedroom. It had sufficient bedding, towels, etc.. The internet connection was good.
At this time, the kitchen definitely needs a redo. The stove and refrigerator are dated, and the stove top is almost unusable, because the burners don't fit properly. The kitchen was not very well cleaned either, especially the refrigerator. The exterior was covered with a great deal of brown goo that I spent time cleaning scrubbing off. Hard to believe the cleaning crew was really trying.
I'd also encourage the owners to upgrade the television and consider rearranging the living room. This could be an absolutely 5 star unit with some upgrades in the kitchen and living area.

Hi Linda,
Thanks for taking the time to review the condo! We really appreciate it as it helps us improve. We do have a new fridge ordered...it takes awhile to get here but should be in soon. The current one is starting to rust from the ocean air. I will see about getting a new TV and any other ideas you have are appreciated. We want it to be a place you want to come back to:)

Fairbanks, AlaskaThe waves lull one to sleep..
Left on 03/17/2009 for a stay in March 2009
What I enjoyed was the sounds of the waves lulling one to sleep.
That in itself is a reason to stay here on the 4th floor. Though there
is an elevator, I used the stairs close to my condo and felt it was
great exercise for me!
From the condo's balconey I saw two migrating whales, a pod of
dolphins and numerous turtles. Daily one could see surfers and
several teams of Hawaiian canoe rowers and kayakers.
Twice a day we went snorkeling on each side of the Kuhio Shores
building. Daily there was a Hawaiian monk seal resting on the
beach and even one day there were two seals! On that day, two of
the SEAL VOLUNTERS were there and explained how the seals were
tagged and how the smaller seal was only 6 months old and was
one of their favorites.
I was pleased the condo had wireless internet as afterwards, I
googled "Hawaiian monk seals" and learned all about this
endangered species.
This condo is an especially well maintained and cleaned one. As a
primary teacher, I was tickled to see numerous labels on the
shelving, the lights, and the remotes for the tv, dvd, and the vcr.
There was no guessing with those helpful stickers.
I appreciated the "smart key" set up with a number code, as I didn't
have to pack a room key when we went snorkeling. The numbers
were easy to remember!
Through the past 30 years we have stayed at many condos in
Hawaii and I give this condo a "top 10" rating or an "A+" grade. -

The condo did not have a sofa,it had a day bed in the living room. The lanai had a plastic aderondeck chair and a discarded kitchen table, that was too big for the space.

Aloha Kevin,
Thank you for the honest review. Many travelers and managers need to hear these types of things in order to improve the condos! We have approval to replace the lanai furniture after the current guests leave and are working on some additional seating in the living area.

Left on 02/04/2009 for a stay in January 2009
We had a wonderful time at this property. The views from this unit
were spectacular. We were able to watch whales from our lanai!
We found the accommodations not only private and clean, but very
comfortable and useable. The beach chairs and cooler with ice
packs were handy for our snorkel/beach outings. And it was nice
to find a good set of cooking knives since we did have several
meals at the condo.
It was great having wireless internet so we could bring our laptop
and keep in touch if need be, or search the internet for reservations
for restaurants. The decor was very nice and we loved the sound of
the pounding surf right outside our window. If you must have it
absolutely quiet, it will probably not meet your expectations. But
coming from subzero cold weather, we did not mind the surf sound
at all and actually found it very soothing. There were no other
intrusive noises at all, however, and we found that wonderful.
There are fun, interesting and useful shops nearby and the Beach
House restaurant was right next door and had wonderful food. We
even enjoyed the shrimp truck parked just outside the property.
We would absolutely stay here again. We hope to return someday
soon.

Victoria BCGreatlocatiion and decor but needed maintenance
Left on 01/08/2009 for a stay in December 2008
The location was perfect, right on the ocean. An older building but condo #416 was updated with lovely Asian/ tropical decor. The walls and ceilings need to be repainted so that took away from the decor. The dishwasher was so old and poorly maintained that one of the door hinges broke off. You could smell the food build up inside. We could not understand how the cleaners or agency were not aware the dishwasher was on its last legs. If they did know they certainly should not have continued to rent it without replacing the dishwasher. We complained and fortunately and responded to the situation the next day replaced it with another used dishwasher. They also gave us a a gift certificate for $100 at the Beach House restaurant next door. This was really appreciated and made up for the problem dishwasher and other problems. There were guys sanding and prepping the building for painting and one day we came home to discover the door had been left ajar - perfect for anyone to help themselves to our belongings. Another issue was that work was being done on the small lawn in front of the building. It had all been torn up for replanting. This must have been very irritating for the people in the ground floor units.

I appreciate your openness in letting us know your frustrations about the condo!
We have since replaced the dishwasher and spoke with the repair crew and Homeowners Association regarding them opening the door and they were very sorry and assured us it won't happen again. Although, now the work is complete so it shouldn't be a problem:) I hope you enjoyed your dinner at the Beach House and again, apologize for any problems you had during your stay!

My wife and I just spent Thanksgiving week at #416 Kuhio Shores and we loved it. This is a one bedroom condo ideal for a couple. It's on the top floor and has a lanai with a beatiful ocean view. The kitchen is fully equipped and there is a barbecue on the property. A big plus for me is that Kuhio Shores sits between two of the best snorkeling beaches on the island, Lawai Beach and P.K.'s. The property is also walking distance from Kukuiula Harbor where you can catch a boat for a snorkeling or scuba diving cruise. The Beach House, one of the best restaurants on the South Shore, is right next door. We had a great Thanksgiving week at Kuhio Shores.
