Great location. Quiet (except for sound of waves rolling in and the palm trees swaying in the breeze). Walking distance from the Market. Nice pool. Great view from our patio. Condo was clean and comfortable.
We visited Kauai with our infant daughter (7 mos old). She stayed in our room (the master). The second bed room was therefore not used at all; but it would have been perfectly comfortable for two children (with the two single beds). We will definitely return some day.
Thank you for the lovely experience. -

Whaler's Cove 212 is the perfect spot to enjoy the beauty and magic of Kauai! This was our 5th year in a row staying in WC 212 and we will return next year and the next year and the next, for as long as the unit is available. We have been coming to Kauai since 1982 and this is by far the most enjoyable accommodations we have found. The location of the complex is perfect; quiet and tucked away from any distractions other than the sight and sounds of ocean, which is right outside your doorstep! We have watched whales and dolphins, amazing sunrises and beautiful sunsets without ever leaving the property. The oceanfront pool and jacuzzi is a wonderful place to enjoy the sun or unwind in the evening while watching the endless number of stars in the night sky. The unit is modern, comfortable, clean, well stocked; all the comforts and necessities of home. There are beaches, shops and restaurants within walking distance of the complex; as well as a variety of activities such as golfing, hiking and diving within a ten minute drive. Amy and her staff at Great Vacation Retreats are the best! They go above and beyond to make sure your stay in paradise is one you will never forget! I can't enough about their service and attention to detail. I would highly recommend Great Vacation Retreats and Whaler's Cove #212.

Left on 10/17/2012 for a stay in October 2012
If you want ocean front, this place is perfect. The property is up to date and just like home. The only disadvantage would be the air flow through the property, it can get a bit stuffy especially at night even with all the windows and doors open. I would recommend this property for a couple with young children or an older couple, if you have kids who want on-site activities, this is not the place but if you want a spacious, up to date condo with fabulous ocean views, Whalers Cove 212 is perfect.

We recently stayed at Whaler's Cove in 212 and had a wonderful experience. Everything was just as we had hoped!
The condo was large, clean, and beautifully furnished but best of all, it was right on the ocean and had wonderful views of the crashing waves and beautifully landscaped pool area. Most of our time was spent away exploring the island of Kauai but at the end of a busy day we really looked forward to returning to WC to enjoy a swim in the pool, dinner on the lanai and then the hot tub!
The kitchen was really well equipped with quality pots and pans and every utensil you could want for cooking. We only ate dinner out once - we loved our evenings sitting on the lanai. Dishwasher, washing machine and dryer, fridge with filtered water and ice maker, hair blower, iron, there was nothing missing! The condo was quiet, hardly saw anyone else the first week.
I have read that a few other people have suggested the condo needed a bit of TLC and that is agreed. It could use a few touch ups here and there but definitely nothing that would interfere with anyone's stay. We felt very lucky to have found this condo and would look to staying here again on another trip. Location was great in terms of being able to walk around parts of Poipu and pretty central to get to other parts of the island. Definitely would recommend Wc212 as a place to stay... -

We just returned from our 4th or 5th year in a row at Whaler's Cove #212 and everything was just as perfect as the previous trips. The condo is absolutely beautiful and the location is convenient, yet peaceful, allowing for a restful, relaxing vacation. The view from the lanai is breathtaking!! We enjoyed most of our meals from that spot. The grounds and pool area are beautiful and immaculately maintained. Amy and the staff at Great Vacation Retreats are wonderful to work with and we highly recommend their services and accommodations!

Gilbert, South CarolinaGreat location but no aC and much deferred maintenance
Left on 06/07/2011 for a stay in June 2011
It was disappointing to walk in and see rolled carpet in the living room, sliding screen doors that were bent and did not close properly, serious water damage on the shower wall near the laundry facilities, and walls that needed paint throughout the unit. The hallway wallpaper had been stripped, but the walls were never repainted -- they just rehung the pictures. The lack of air conditioning made it difficult to sleep at night. A Tripadvisor review dated 1/30/2010 said there were beach chairs, mats, coolers and boggie boards, but we didn't find any of those things during our stay. It was quite trecherous to scramble over the rocks to access the cove where other reviewers apparently snorkled with the sea turtles. We weren't lucky enough to see any, although we checked everytime we went out to the parking lot. (From previous reviews on Tripadvisor, I assumed I would see the turtles from the lanai, but that is not so.)
However, the location was fantastic. The ocean view from the lani was beautiful, and we loved eating all of our meals outside watching the crashing waves. It was only a few steps to the pool and spa. It is a short drive to Poipu Beach for snorkeling and sunning on a sandy, lifeguarded beach.
It was very convenient being picked up at the airport and taken to our rental car; however, I suspect everything wasn't "on the up and up" because they told us they were not legally permitted to park at the airport and we had to meet them at an off-site parking lot at the end of our stay to drop off the car.
All in all -- it's a million dollar view, but the condo definitely needs the maintenance issues addressed before I can recommend it to a friend. Also, I wouldn't rent another condo on Kauai until I'm sure there is air-conditioning.Response from Great Vacation Retreats - 06/24/2011

Hi Victoria,
Thanks for posting a review!
We really appreciate feedback - good and bad.
This will all be brought to the owners attention and some of it already has - just working around vendors and guests schedules is difficult. After your departure the screen doors were replaced. The water damage was also repaired and as soon as we can the carpet is to be repaired - it needs to be stretched.
As for the beach rental items, I am sorry that you were expecting them and they were not there. We actually removed them about a year ago because they were causing a mildewy smell in the closets and guests were complaining about that.
The car rental company that we work with is fantastic and with great service. They are definitely on the up and up or we wouldn't work with them. They are able to keep their cars updated and prices low by not having and airport location. The locations with an airport location require guests to pay a daily 'airport' tax which can sometimes double the cost of your car rental.
I do hope that those little things didn't prevent you from enjoying your stay and from the sound of it you had a great trip and we hope to hear back from you again.
(AC is a rarity on the oceanfront properties because of the salt air - however, we are hopefully in the process of installing it soon at one of our premier oceanfront condos:) -

(good recommendations too - thank you celeste). lou was terrific, bringing the car to the door, being super flexible and friendly and amy made the whole booking procedure a pleasure...even though i complicated it a bit. loved swimming with the turtles right there besides the condo and watching them on the rocks was a treat. handy to walk to t he new shopping village too. missed an electric kettle - but no big deal.

MNOur Best Hawaiian Vacation!
Left on 11/17/2010 for a stay in August 2010
The Great Vacations Retreat condo #212 was great. The view, well, I can't really say enough here, so I won't try, the amenities, the location, the peacefulness, all combined to make this the most wonderful vacation retreat we've ever had. Believe it or not, we fell in love with the sea turtles, and it was our fault for naming them. The turtles seemed to have personalities of their own, and over time we grew to recognize them by their markings. Each night we'd watch the sea turtles come into Whaler's Cove to find a place to sleep for the evening. There appeared to be a social bond between these magnificent and rather large amphibians. You'll know what I'm talking about if you watch them for a few hours. It was a new experience for us and by the time we left, we realized that we had developed an emotional bond with them. Since we developed this bond, we made the decision that we would likely see our turtle friends again. The snorkeling in the area was the best on the island in our humble opinion, since there were plenty of sea turtles to observe. The year before, we had fallen in love with "Tunnels Beach" on the north shore, and not to take away from the magnificence of the unique nature of "Tunnels Beach", but we really had a more pleasant experience on the south shore. The sea turtles played a large role here, and having personally been within 1 foot of a large sea turtle, I can tell you that it is quite an experience. The turtle and I had an "excuse me!" moment, when we did our best to avoid a collision with each other!
Sleeping with the sliding door open, listening to the crashing of the waves, and awakening to the magnificence of the ocean in the morning was too much for mere words to express. You've just got to experience this in person to appreciate it. We had read the reviews, and were impressed. Here I am, doing my best to put our experience into words, but I'm not going to be able to do it justice.Response from Great Vacation Retreats - 11/19/2010

We stayed here for 2 nights at the end of May, 2010. The condo exceeded our expectations. It was spacious, clean and well stocked. The view is fabulous--just yards from the waves rolling in. The pool and hot tub were steps away. The complex was very quiet and peaceful during our stay. Shopping and dining options were close by --we particularly liked Keoke's Paradise. I would say this condo is just about perfect although I would hesitate to rent during hot summer months without a/C. I'd give this unit an a+. Amy was great to work with and the staff was very helpful.

We loved our time At Whaler's Cove- the unit was spotless, very well appointed and extremely comfortable. We had everything we needed and more. The view from the lanai is like a picture postcard- swaying palms, surf breaking in the cove, beautiful plants and flowers, and visiting tropical birds... Sigh... wish I was back there right now!! The location is great- only a few minutes from Poipu Beach and great snorkeling, Spouting Horn, Botanical Gardens and terrific restaurants. We were unable to snorkel in the cove itself, as the surf was choppy and the water murky after a good rain (a stream feeds into the cove, which carried a bunch of silt into it after the rain) however we loved watching the sea turtles swim there. That was really the only down-side. Breakfasts on the lanai were a real treat, and the sound of the surf lulled us to sleep at night. We will definitely return!!

Whaler's Cove is an extremely beautiful facility with great amenities and an
outstanding location. It was perfect for exploring Kauai. We had a wonderful
stay. The unit was fully stocked with everything you would need for a
comfortable family vacation. The information we received prior to our arrival
provided very useful information. The only downside was heavy footed
neighbors upstairs in a unit that obviously had no carpeting. The location of
Whaler's Cove more than made up for the noise. -

Very luxorius condo. Nicely decorated. Very well stocked with kitchen supplies. Nice little special touches / attention to detail; for example the two pairs of reading glasses, binoculars, games, boogie boards and noodles for the pool. Loved the Malie bath products. We've stayed at several different rentals on Kauai and Whaler's Cove is #1. Nothing beats it! From the amenities (everything you could possibly need/want) to the gorgeous views and pool area and sunny bright condo, to the crashing surf it is truly a Kauai gem and our favorite place to stay. In fact, if we don't plan ahead, we fit our vacation schedule around when Whaler's Cove is available. Don't miss the sea turtles in the cove right out the door or the snorkeling/scuba--just stay far off the rocks in front of the condo. We've also seen whales close by.
It's convenient to most everything on the island, especially Poipu and Lawai beach, where you can find great, easy snorkeling. And if it's the right time of year, this is a good location to leave from to spend the day at Polihale--amazing! We've never had any problems finding parking when we head up to K'ee beach leaving from here, either (highly recommend).
It's not too far to stock up at Costco or any of the other stores in Kapaa, but there are also some great local stores right in Koloa for stocking up. Koloa Market is also fantastic to grab lunch and go!
The service I receive from Amy Grant at Great Vacation Retreats is above and beyond and I highly recommend her. She is extremely helpful in planning your trip. Thanks, Amy!!
Also, if in Kapaa, be sure to stop at the Big Save to visit Aaron at Hawaiian Bizzard shave ice--it's the best on the island and not to be missed!(1-5pm weekdays). -

Whaler's Cove was an ideal location. We saw beautiful sunrises in the morning and beautiful sunsets in the evenings. We were just steps away from snorkeling, a short walk to Baby's Beach, a short drive to other popular Poipu beaches as well as shopping and dining. The complex was tucked away, very quiet and serene. The condo was very well equipped with everything we needed for the beach (beach chairs, towels, mats, coolers, boogie boards, etc.) We absolutely loved it and will DEFINITELY come back to Whaler's Cove to stay!

The island of Kauai would be our first choice of islands to visit when planning a trip to Hawaii. We hope to be back soon.

We enjoyed the property. It was well prepared for our arrival. Clean, and not run down except for a damaged door. Nice to have the electronics package. The patio and pool were great for our party of 4 and the living room was so roomy! The ensuites for both bedrooms were a real plus as well. The only thing more we could have asked for was air conditioning. Other rentals in the complex were way more expensive and not as well equipped or decorated as this one.

Wow, we loved it all. From the easy reservations with Great Vacation Retreats, to the humpback whales breaching and dolphins leaping offshore. Whaler's Cove #212 is spacious, clean, well maintained and beautifully furnished. We immediately felt at home and yet the stunning view was a constant reminder to us that we were in paradise. We expected Thanksgiving week to feel busy with holiday travelers but W.C. seemed quiet and private and we were often the only ones in the pool area. And where else can you walk down a short flight of stairs and see 7 sea turtles sunning on the rocks a few feet away or slip on mask and fins and snorkel with them out through the bay! We just can't think of anything that wasn't top notch. Well the pool water temperature could have been a few degrees warmer but the hot tub was glorious (there it is again). No problem, the ocean water felt fabulous! You'll love Whaler's Cove, we certainly did.

We spent a wonderful week at Whalers Cove.It is so restful and relaxing watching and listening to the waves rolling in just below the condo. In the cove you can watch the turtles. The condo has everything that you need. We would have liked to have AC but they have many fans and the ocean breeze helps. We watched the sunset from The Beach House which is only a short distance away. The spouting horn was great to see. Whaler's Cove #212 was a beautiful and spacious condo. Located on the southwest side of Kauai it had a nice tropical breeze that kept all mosquitos away. Though there isn't a swimming beach directly adjacent to the property, the Sheraton Beach is just a short drive away, as are many of the other famous Poipu beaches. The interior decor was very nice with comfortable beds and couches. My only struggle was trying to figure out why there were always feathers around the living room floor. I finally figured out they were coming out of the couch pillows! Besides that, our stay was wonderful and we would highly recommend this location to others.

This Whaler's Cove property was everything we could have hoped for in a vacation property and more. The Lanai was outstanding! A breath of fresh air each morning, romantic or casual dinner spot, and peaceful wave crashing nights. The birds singing was quite an added treat too. The Master bedroom was excellent, and the 2nd bedroom worked well also. The living room was very comfortable, and everything kitchen wise was provided. The location was close to many nice spots, yet it is hidden in it's own area with large turtles in the cove (very cool!) If I were to recommend to a friend who was going to Kauai a place to stay, there is no question that I would strongly recommend to stay at Whaler's Cove #212. You will glad you did. I hope we can get back there sometime, because the memories still bring us so much joy.
