      Book this condo !!

Left on 07/16/2012 for a stay in July 2012

We researched and researched where to stay on Kauai. I think this island beats to a somewhat different drum than the larger hawaiian islands, quite peaceful, laid back. It would seem that the south shore, poipu area, enjoys the most sun, is only about 25 - 30 minutes max from LIH airport, has some of the best beaches, and and and. Frommers put us on to the king of condos - Parrish Collection has an excellent reputation for property management, for maintaining a high level of standards and they have a very comprehensive website of their properties with images and "classifications" of interior. Something along the lines of "island casual" to.. well basically they let you know how the interior design / state of the condo is, obviously the ones more in need of a renno or with a basic setup are more conservatively priced. We liked the look of the unit, the ocean front location (but is not on a sandy beach but rather overlooking a small lava rock bay where the waves crash in, access at your own risk by a small trail down the street), and is a bit set back from the poipu area. Upon arrival in lihue our keys and welcome package were waiting at the car rental office, including directions on how to get there. We drove down, there is a private parking lot to park, and went in. The entrance is a metal screen door which can be latched from the inside and a house door that has no deadbolt but rather "turn the little lock in the centre of the door handle" which of course would not be effective against a swift boot kick. I think this is more an attribute to the area being a safe one - but was a funny feeling to whimsically lock up each time we left. There is a large safe in the master bedroom similar to ones in hotels where we put passport and co in. So back to the unit - it was like someone had just set up everything for us - the lights were on, bed made, we felt at home right away. The owners of the property must be quite trusting folks - the interior equip is really out of the ordinary for a summer rental (at least the ones that ive seen) full set of german kitchen knives, good silverware, really well equipped kitchen / flat in short, little stereo, router with password for free Wifi (there were also several "non protected" internet hotspots nearby) flatscreen tv, comfy couch, ceiling fans, floor fans, dining area we never used (eat outside!) washer/dryer with a package of laundry soap for the first load, tables and chairs and a couch on the lanai, candles, matches, binoculars, tupperware, vacuum, ... comfy beds (there are two bedrooms, one with two single beds that housed our suitcases and then a master bedroom that is separated with louvered sliding panels and each bedroom has its own bathroom with tub/shower - so perfect for a small family or two couples who get along with one another). The interior design i would describe as being "tasteful hawaiian" - so definitely with hula this and flower that, but tastefully done. There is also a selection of higher-quality "island made" toiletries included - so shampoo, conditioner, hand soap, body cream in big quantities (dont take them along or you will be charged - i didnt do this, im just saying :-) ). A few otherwise heavy-weight-airlines-charge-for-everything-now items that one doesnt have to bring along. The real treat came the next day, waking up in daylight to see the sights and sounds - the unit is on the top floor of a total of three so of course the view is mesmerizing, the ocean crashes in and out all day with the most calm time being late in the eve, and sea turtles swim and brunch most days right in front of the property. At one point we counted more than 15. The sea breeze is pretty much all you need for a/C (it can get windy here and there is no a/C in the unit) along with the ceiling fans to keep the air moving. And down below there is a pool area which is protected from the wind for relaxing and a quick dip. The only problem we had here were the limited number of deck chairs. The deck is on two levels and quite large yet there were only 6 deck chairs, 2 of them broken as they were missing one screw each. The place wasnt too full when we were there, we figure the place has round-about 12 units, maybe half of them were occupied, so we only had to plan our pool visits around a family who sent mom down quite early to claim each chair with towels, sunscreen, flip flops and magazines. But if the poipu palms was fully occupied this could probably be a bit annoying. There definitely is room for more deck chairs. I emailed parrish (my phone is german one $$ call) if they could bring a few more over but they never answered. all of my reservation requests / questions were otherwise answered, this one not and we just didnt push the issue. They dont manage all the properties in poipu palms, I would imagine they would have to work out this issue in a somewhat different fashion. The good thing is - the nearby beaches are only 1 minute drive away but sometimes is just easier to head down the stairs and flop on a chair, and make return trips to the flat for a cold ice tea, bathroom break, rather than pack the car with beach gear and head out each time. Having mentioned beach gear - there is a closet on the lanai that is full of chairs, umbrella, boogie boards, kids stuff for sand castles, so all that stuff that you would otherwise have to lend or your kids would annoy you to buy $$. The grounds are well maintained with lush gardens and grassy areas. There is a barbecue pit you can use complete with coals, lighter fluid all neatly arranged. The area itself is quiet yet very close to poipu beach. There isnt too much (grocery) shopping nearby but the best bet for selection and price for "basics" so butter, jam, juice, water, beer, coke, ice tea, sunscreen .. is the Kukuiula store on poipu road, just look for the yellow submarine. Otherwise you will find yourself at the big save in koloa town about 5 minutes further - they were a bit more inviting for baked bread, veg and meat (selection, quality, price.. ok but it is hawaii) and had a quite large wine selection where the good bottles were frequently on sale. beside this is the koloa fish market - so your typical (very good) plate lunch deli featuring good quality poke, lau lau and co. It was a real pleasure to do a mix of cooking or fetching take-out to enjoy on the lanai in the evenings. Other good take-out nearby: savage shrimp, da crack mexican food, koloa fish market i mentioned, bubbas burgers (expect a line but it goes fast) , and get addicted go there every day chicken in a barrel bbq in kappa (also opening in lihue soon, kappa is over 30 minutes away). Otherwise i read in travel guides that most families fill up on groceries in lihue after landing. All the known big stores are here. Safeway, wallmart, longs drugs, costco ... So all in all it was a perfect vacation. A well managed flat, with good amenities, good location - when you are done you just have to put the keys in their drop box on poipu road, which is only a small "takes 5 minutes" longer side step to the airport than the direct route. I believe other parrish customers also used them as a concierge, so travel info, bookings etc. but we didnt take advantage of this. we hope to return to kauai next year and will definitely contact them for a booking.

      too many rainbows.

Left on 10/19/2011 for a stay in August 2011

this was the first place I've rented where the pictures made the condo look smaller than it is - our first thought when we opened the door was, "did they give us the key to the correct rental? this is huge!" Poipu Palms 303 is a lovely, spacious unit - it was very, very pleasant - the tradewinds kept the unit cool and the lanai is very cozy - it was very, very hard to leave the lanai. no bug problems as reported in another review - a few teeny ants on the kitchen counter, which a little soapy water took care of - all in all, I intend to go back and don't need to vacation anywhere else ever again:)

Outstanding balcony view of the surf hitting the cliffs, excellent southern beach exposure, turtles in view, really relaxing. Nice to have outdoor BBQ right there, ready to go.
I hope to go again, to that exact property

      turtle fantastic

Left on 05/24/2011 for a stay in April 2011

In the arrival pack was directions to our condo and info on farmer's markets. We hit a farmer's market on the way to the condo and ran into a former colleague who had the sense to retire to Kauai. What fun! The condo was wonderful. Peaceful -- the other building tenants were very considerate. It had everything a person could want for a day at the beach such as mats, boogie boards, thermos, cooler. We enjoyed the pool, the walk to Brennecke beach, the turtles in front every day, the pound of the surf.

A home from home in sunny paradise

Left on 09/04/2009 for a stay in August 2009

Wonderful, clean, well spec'd property with a fabulous ocean view in a quiet location but within walking distance of the beach. Beds were very comfortable but ensure you aren't a light sleeper as the ocean waves crashing can be noisy! The benefit of this is that you can watch turtles in the sea right from the balcony or laze by the pool (small pool but clean). Not touristy at all. Simply a home-from home (and don't be put off by the description of the standard of furnishing as island casual - it's great).

      Great location and property

Left on 04/27/2009 for a stay in April 2009

Nice unit, well furnished. Loved the view, the pool was fine. Location was great, quiet and yet walking to a couple of beaches. Internet was a plus. Comfortable, teenagers recommended a topper on the twin beds. Kitchen well furnished. No sign of insects like previous visitors reported. The nearby point was a lighthouse and a LORAN station until 1954. Plan on time to read and watch marine life.

      beautiful views and convenient

Left on 03/30/2009 for a stay in February 2009

This home was perfect and a great value. The keys to the unit were made available to pick up where we rented our car, which was very convenient. The unit was in immaculate condition upon arrival, with all the conveniences of home(i.e. washer/dryer, blow dryer, iron/ironing board, etc). You can watch sea turtles play right below the pool deck and whales breach in the distance as you relax on your lanai. Both the sunrise and sunset are visible from the lanai. You can sunbathe on the deck around the pool or you can take a short ride to Poipu Beach and perhaps see a monk seal as we did. Great restaurants are nearby or you can stay in and cook your own meals in the well equipped kitchen. I would definitely recommend this property to anyone looking for an excellent value when staying in Kauai. We thoroughly enjoyed celebrating our 25th anniversary while staying at Poipu Palms #303.

      Aloha,
      Brian and Suzanne

      Great vacation rental!

Left on 01/20/2009 for a stay in December 2008

This vacation rental has pretty good bang for its buck... the third floor accomodation had a spectacular view of the ocean with turtle soup right below in the reef! We watched the turtles at breakfast every morning. The set up and design of the condo is great with the main bedroom facing the lanai, so you can hear the ocean at night. It is clean, very nicely kept, and has all the amenities you might want. We felt right at home. The grounds are quiet, the pool was hardly used, and the deck area was great for suntanning and having a quiet drink... but you don't even need the pool deck as the third floor lanai has a much better view.

Also, the condo is only a short walk to Brenneke beach, and Poipu Beach (a fantastic place). I would say this is a very underpriced condo for what you get... and one of the best deals you will find in Poipu!

Feel free to email us if you have any questions... we go to Kauai every December for pre-xmas vacation.

      Rainy, but great.

Left on 01/14/2009 for a stay in November 2008

This was a great place to rent, a nice view, kitchen and everything. The only thing was the weather, it rained, but I guess the owner cannot help that. Nice birds outside, a perfect view to a sea turtle having its beakfast on the reef below.
