It was a pleasure to stay at Rata Lodge because at the same time we felt at home, we could stay relaxed and enjoy the great food, the good company of the owners and appreciate the most beautiful view.

Supurb position and accomodation . John , Ingrid and the team could not have been more attentive and have a wealth of knowledge in managing a boutique lodge and the local and surrounding area. The food and variety was of the best quality and local fresh produce ..

Ingrid and John are fantastic hosts- interested in guests, and individual needs.. we were corresponding easily over email, and I got asked in detail about dietary preferences before we arrived (far beyond dietary requirements- this was 'what's your Mum's favourite foods??') ..and sure enough, the food was amazing, and my Mum was thrllled to get lemon/raspberry desserts 3 ways. We were in the Pavilion suite - and the extra living space with the floor to ceiling glass, views and deck was simply stunning (I found the integrated aV and WiFi pretty good too). Its really an amazing location for a house, with the 180 degree views, all the way out to the Seabird coast, and over to the Coramandel. We went to celebrate my Mum's 80th year while on a bit of road trip, so a couple of days not having to drive, (as every meal can be catered for) was frankly fantastic.. John's got a good wine cellar tucked away, and more than happy to discuss, share and recommend. Once you've got up the drive, everything is on the flat, so my Mum who struggles with a lot of steps had no worries. This is definitely a luxury option as the prices suggest- but it's one that delivers, and worth it for me to hear my Mum say 'Amazing, I've never stayed anywhere like that'...

We managed to escape the dark winter in Denmark and had the privilege of staying at Rata Lodge on 2 occasions during our 7 weeks in New Zealand in February and March this year. You approach the lodge though a forest driveway and having unloaded
your stuff and been shown around the venue you end up in front of the lodge on the lawn with the most breathtaking view over the Firth of Thames with Coromandel in the background framed by a clear blue sky. Rata Lodge offers apart from the surrounding beautiful scenery the possibility to relax in your own suite but also the conservatory and the lounge provide you with ample space to relax and if you choose to be outside you may breathe in the clean air and add some tan to your skin from the sun on the surrounding decks. We appreciated very much the company of our hosts, John and Ingrid, who have really managed to make a top class lodge out of Rata Lodge and when being treated with the marvelous cooking of Ingrid supported by John's wine cellar we could not ask for more. Great hosts with nothing too much trouble. Magnificent views over the Coromandel from our suite. Food out of this world. Sitting in front of the fire sipping a liqueur after dinner, listening to some of the fine selection of CDs was a delight.Had a great bush walk led by John - this is to be recommended.
Most memorable experience was chatting to Ingrid & John, our interesting, widely travelled and gracious host & hostess. -

This elegant lodge is perched on top of a hill and designed to take absolute advantage of the spectacular panoramic views available from several rooms. The comfort and cleanliness of the rooms (we stayed in The Retreat), furnishings, artwork, stone fireplace all contribute to a pampered relaxing atmosphere which are further complemented by John and Ingrid's warm hospitality and eagerness to ensure all our needs were met.
The only issue is the lodge's geographic positioning. Easy to find if travelling south from auckland and it seems to mostly serve aucklanders looking for a luxury weekend away or organising a special occasion. For international visitors, this lodge would be convenient for exploring the less-touristy Thames/Paeroa/Whitianga region but for more than a couple of days, the lack of local restaurants is an issue (e.g. unlike being based in Coromandel Town with its numerous restaurants, shopping and tourist attractions). This is why Rata offers Ingrid's gourmet evening meals as a lodge option; there is also one seafood place reported to sell Nz's best 'fish and chips' (the snapper was excellent) only 12kms along the coast.
Not inexpensive but if you want to splurge out on a little piece of pampering in this part of the North Island, keep Rata definitely in mind for your travel plans.

One of the most incredible views I have ever seen. From the majestic setting to the sweeping views; from the luxury of the furnishings to the exemplary hosting; from the comfort of the exquisite bed to the delightful cuisine ... this was a visit I'd love to repeat very soon and very often. A real getaway - yet it's under an hour from auckland!

Feeling more like home than a lodge, our spacious suite (the Coromandel) provided panormaic views of the Firth of Thames and the Coromandel peninsula. Tastefully furnished and wonderfully appointed, we could not have picked a better spot for our last night in NZ before heading home to California. Ingrid and John are the perfect hosts, and Ingrid treated us to a splendid three-course dinner and wonderful breakfast.

We stayed at Rata Lodge in the New Year - just for one night, but would have loved to have stayed longer. The hosts are welcoming and friendly, but not intrusive, and the meal cooked for us was really lovely. The Lodge is in beautiful surroundings and is the perfect, peaceful, tranquil getaway. The rooms are modern and clean, and the shared areas are comfortable & welcoming. Highly recommended.

Lucy and I had a wonderful stay at Rata Lodge; we were made to feel so welcome by John and Ingrid. The rooms were lovely and the view across the Firth of Thames is spectacular. Ingrid is a fabulous chef and John's wine seller is well worth a rummage. Highly recommended.

My husband and I celebrated our 13th Wedding anniversary at Rata Lodge. It was a lovely private location, and the accommodations were very special. The room we stayed in had it's own private outside bath which allowed us to enjoy the quiet farm surrounds.
The meal (which was our own tailor made menu) and service was fantastic.
Would love to stay there again.
