Additional Location Information
Pollenca and Puerto Pollenca (the name originates from the Roman - Pollentia) have very different ambiences and atmospheres.
Puerto Pollenca is very much the beach resort town with it's two beaches - the pine fringed Albercutx or Voramar Beach and south of the Marina the wide sandy Pollenca Beach, wide pedestrian promenade, range of resort hotels, apartments and British/Mediterranean influenced bars and cafes. Unlike other areas in the island the British tourist seems to prevail rather than the German. That said it's not a pumping disco town and, particularly with the holiday villas that litter the surrounding countryside between the old town and the port, seems to attract more families than young clubbers.
Pollenca, the old town, is a very relaxing historical market town with many hidden treasures. Make a start with the local tourist office which is situated on Carrer Guillem Cifre de Colonya, just below the Placa Major next to the Museo de Pollenca in the Convento Santo Domingo. You can get a free street map and info on what's going on in the local area. The Museo de Pollenca has an interesting collection of archeological finds, paintings and Gothic sacred art and a pretty garden courtyard. It's free entry after 7.20pm and 1.50e the rest of the opening hours. The visual stamp of it's Roman heritage is the Roman stone bridge over the Torrent de San Jordi, built around AD120, at the northern edge of the town.
The Placa Major , in Pollenca is great place at any time of the day to sit and people watch. It tends in summer months to be much busier during the day and then as early evening approaches, the crowds recede to wherever on the island they've daytripped from or back to beach resort of Puerto Pollenca. The locals perambulate and sit talking over the days events while the children play. Hotel Juma's cafe umbrella topped tables on the square is an ideal place for a coffee or a cold drink although the best tapas is to be found at the adjacent Club Pollenca, Placa Major 10 which is a municipal and cultural social club for the locals.
Every year in July and August Pollenca runs a music festival with a wide range of classical concerts, it's one of the most popular festivals in Mallorca and advanced booking is recommended . There's also the typical range of fiestas throughout the year most popular being the Mares de Deu dels Angels at the beginning of August. This commemorates the battle between the Christians of Pollenca and 15,000 Moors led by the pirate Dragut in 1550 and over 1000 towns people dress up and renact the battle in the streets of Pollenca, bands and performances take place in the town and it ends with a wonderful fireworks display. For out of season visitors, on the 17th of January Pollenca celebrates St Antoni Abat's Day with the La Davallada d'U Pi where the towns people walk to the Ternelles valley and, after a hearty lunch of fresh bread, oil, salt herring and wine, fell a pine tree and carry it back, all the while fortifying themselves with the island's digestif Hierbas, to the town centre. They then erect the now well-greased pine in the Placa Major and the local young bucks attempt to climb it. It's fun and recommended, observing that is.
The work of renowned Pollenca painter Dionis Bennassar is displayed in the Casa Museo Dionis Bennassar - admission 2 euros, Carrer Roca 14, there's now a contemporary art gallery on the Placa Major, Galeria Maior - admission free; and the Museo Marti Vicenc on Carrer Calvari 10, also free admission, contains a permanent collection of Marti Vicenc's paintings scultures and textiles.
If you're around Pollenca at the weekend the Sunday market is a must . Even if you're not self catering and therefore unable to take full advantage of the wealth of local produce on offer, you can buy colourful strings of chillis to take home, the indigenous straw basket work (the prices tend to be better at the market than in tourist shops at the Port) or put together an alfresco lunch to eat at the top of the Calvari steps or on Puig Maria. The market has spread to the neighbouring side streets in the last few years to include alsorts of street traders selling textiles, jewellery, furniture and art of different styles and quality.
There are a lot of teenagers in the area, if you're staying in Pollenca you'll hear their mopeds haring through the streets late at night, and there are a few hip bars and clubs hidden away in the tiny winding streets if you know where to look.
From Puerto Pollensa you can catch a boat ride to the, blink and you'd swear it was the Carribean, unspoilt Formentor Beach where you can pay a small supplement to rent loungers on the private 5 star Formentor Hotel part of the beach. The hotel has a lovely cafe/restaurant on the beach front where you can get lunch.
With its island status, of course you can bet on plenty of activities in the water in Puerto Pollenca and some good walks from Pollenca.
Scuba divers can find everything they need and novices can get lessons at Scuba Mallorca. The clear waters and natural underwater caves make diving a tourist favorite.
Golfers may enjoy the beautiful landscape and the challenging 18-hole course at Son Vida Golf which can be easily reached from Pollenca.
Island wide, rather than specific to Pollenca and Puerto Pollenca, cycling has always been very popular and www.procyclehire.com is a great pick for rentals and tours. Walking tours are also a superb way to check out the scenery and get some exercise. All fitness-levels are welcome for a range of tours at mallorcanwalkingtours.com. To add a little incline to your walk, try Mallorca Hiking Adventures and take advantage of the island's 4,000 feet cliffs and ocean views. This tour will get you to see some of the indigenous birds of the islands and even 3,000 year old burial caves. Club Pollentia, at La Placa Major 10, can offer advice on walks and bird watching in the area (you can see Black Vultures, Bee-eaters, Audouin's Gulls, Ospreys, Night Herons, Eleonara's Falcons, Scops Owls, Hoopoes and many more species).
