We have just spent a week at The artist Cottage, what a perfect place to stay. Exceptionally comfortable, everything you could want from beach chairs to games. Unique, clean, fun and relaxing. Close to all the action, walking distance from everything in PD. Stay in and cook or BBQ or frequent the many eating places. Would recommend the cottage to anyone looking for that little extra something, great price, great location and great ambience. We will be back for more.

Richland, MichiganFantastic experience!
Left on 05/06/2013 for a stay in March 2013
From the time we arrived at the artists Cottage and saw the beautifully decorated rooms until we left 5 days later, staying at the Cottage was a first class experience. Tina had really thought out the needs of anyone who might stay there….going to the beach? Tina had a beach bag, towels, etc…enjoying a picnic? Tina had a basket and cooler ready to use…have kids? Tina has toys….staying inside on a rainy day? Tina had games and puzzles to go along with the large screen TV. I could go on, but Tina really has her tenant’s needs in mind. In short, our stay at the artists Cottage was wonderful and we will stay there again and encourage you to do the same!

The good:
Very cool mixture of furniture, artwork, plant life. Everywhere you look you see an intriguing treat for the senses, even in the bathroom!
Kitchen had everything we needed to prepare fun meals. A quick trip up to the Coles grocery store supplied us with culinary delights. We loved the grill (barbecue) on the front veranda. We used it several times!
The air conditioning worked very well. Although our hosts suggest open air living, our delicate sensibilities found us wanting an escape from the heat and humidity of Northern Tropical Queensland in February. A flip of the switch cooled down either the bedroom, or the entire cottage, in minutes. When we wanted the open air, it was great to throw open every window and door and live like a local.
The laundry machine, in the large bathroom, was much appreciated. It allowed us to wash our dirties from the first half of our trip.
Neighborhood was very quiet. We could occasionally hear a neighbor, but likely we were the loudest ones on the block! The cottage is set back off the main drag, so you feel like you are away from all the hustle and bustle.
The less good:
The cottage was not really a "cottage". We envisioned a little standalone building on its own bit of land. This property resides in a, albeit prime, location surrounded by about 8 other vacation rentals/private residences. This seems to be par for the course in Port Douglas, as it is packed with "Holiday Rental" places. Compared to those Holiday Rental mega-plexes, the artists Cottage is remote and isolated.
We would call this location more of a town home, as it sets atop about six garages used by the other residences. If there were downstairs neighbors, it would probably be best called an apartment, or a flat. Our hosts have done an excellent job styling the location to look like a cottage.
The cottage is a bit of a walk to the beach. In fact, we drove. The cottage does not advertise itself as being beachfront, so this was not a surprise.
Though the cottage has a bunch of children's toys, we think it would be somewhat cozy for a couple with more than one child. The child would have to sleep in the play pen in the bedroom, or out on the couch.
The final word:
We would stay again! We would recommend it to friends! It was a great romantic getaway! -

We had a lovely nine nights here and loved it all. The cottage is so photogenic and quirky, loved the open doors, shutters and blue tiles. Went out and explored Port, snorkeling and restaurants and also stayed in and cooked BBQ and relaxed on the verandah. Lovely, peaceful spot - hope to visit again in the future."

Left on 07/27/2012 for a stay in July 2012
We stayed here at beginning of July for 3 nights, but would happily never have left. The apartment is in a quiet residential estate- 3 min walk from beach and 10 min walk to town.
Its quite possibly the nicest place I've ever stayed. The decor is thoughtfully done and the apartment is well equipped with everything you could possibly need for your holiday- even down to rugs and chairs if you choose to go off for a picnic. We instantly felt at home the moment we walked in the door.
The apartment is owned by Tina and her husband. Tina was the perfect host. Quick to respond on booking and for any query.
We loved our time in Port Douglas which is a beautiful town, but the artist Cottage truly made the whole trip magical. Would go back tomorrow! -

-friendly and informative welcome and attention to our needs
-the home was comfortable and interestingly furnished and the ability to open up to the outside was most relaxing
-situated in a central location for getting around Port Douglas on foot but at the same time quietly tucked away from the traffic and crowds
-had all the amenities a household could want for an extended stay and everything was in good condition
-only negative was the smell of mould in the kitchen cupboards but understandable in the climate -

If you are reading this review then this place is probably for you. If you are after somewhere unique, without the standard hotel furniture and insipid decor then stop reading and book this place now.
We stayed at the cottage for a week and loved every second, it's packed full of character and great for a relaxing stay at the same time. The cottage is appointed with everything you could need and Tina the owner was amazingly helpful with her local knowledge and recommendations.
I would recommend it for a romantic getaway or for couples with a baby. It's only one bedroom so you have to be down with sleeping in the same room as your bub. The stairs to get into cottage wouldn't be suitable for the disabled or elderly.
The only tidbit I would offer to manage your expectations would be to let you know that the cottage is actually part of a set of town houses, not on it's own block. It is free-standing however and the surrounding residents give it a relaxed, safe, villagey vibe. -

Paradise ! We had a wonderful stay - it was our first holiday with our nine month old! We thought the cottage was fantastic - we loved waking up here each morning! It was peaceful, relaxed and characterful, and close to everything.
A tip for travellers who are self-catering - do visit Port's Sunday market - the fresh food is excellent. -

A family reunion holiday (sydney meets UK meets Turkey) brought us to the cottage and "strangely" the entire family preferred to congregate here rather than at the swanky Mirage rental :)! We all loved the "feel" of the home, the lush surrounds and the peaceful tranquility of the cottage! Port Douglas wowed us, the kind of place we would come to every year if it wasn't an 18 hour journey from home! Our highlights: coral trout at Nautilus, the comedy routine of the keepers at Hartley's Creek, the cable car down from Kuranda, and just being here! Thanks for everything , we hope to be back one day!

We celebrated nine years as a couple at the artists' Cottage - it was sublime! After our adventurous days on beach walks, rainforest walks at Cape Tribulation and our days of snorkeling at Low Isles and outer reefs, coming back to the cottage was a homely oasis! The cottage is an eclectic and fun mix of vintage and modern decor. Comfy couches, a verandah to have a BBQ and read, a leisurely swim in the pool - and beautiful and interesting, inspiring art to admire.
Thank you Tina and Matt for sharing this place!

What an absolute find in the heart of Port Douglas!
This is a real holiday house!
Dont expect the usual boring decor...this gorgeous little hideaway has without doubt been created with love and passion.
Tina and Matt have an eye for taking the ordinary and making it exraordinary!
'The artists Cottage' is filled with a fabulous mix of new and vintage furniture and furnishings along with the most amazingly well put together collection of artwork and aritfacts that one rarely sees!
The Cottage is just a walk away from both town and beach and yet a world away from the hustle and bustle.
This charming little haven is far from pretentious yet has a sophistication all of its own. The cottage envelops you as soon as you enter. I cant imagine staying anywhere else in Port Douglas...except perhaps 'The artists Treehouse'...
Tina and Matts other litte haven of course!

First may I say that I have contacted the owner of this "cottage", and she has responded to my comments. There was not enough light to read, there was no internet connection and no telephone. Although she said the lack of internet and telephone was stated on the website, I could not find mention of this.We did purchase a connection as we were there for one week and we needed to be able to contact home. The lack of light was supposed to be "romantic", the lack of internet and telephone was supposed to be relaxing. As I was traveling from the us and had elderly relatives, the lack of communication was not "relaxing". Although I tried to address the lack of lighting with the real estate manager nearby, she failed to follow through. The price , especially during off season, is not as completive as I thought after I arrived.

Oh, its so sad to lose our excellent rating, but thanks so much for letting us know. As I mentioned in our emails - I am sorry the manager didn't respond to your requests as soon as she should have, but I can only use the excuse that her first baby was due any moment, so she wasn't as responsive as she usually is - she is usually fantastic. As I mentioned, we are now back in Australia after extensive travels and taking over management. We are in the process of relooking at the lights to get the perfect balance, and installing internet so people have do the choice to be connected or not. Again, I am sorry your stay wasn't as wonderful as it should have been, and be sure that we are responding to all of your concerns so we can hopefully regain our excellent rating with tripadvisor, and make beautiful holidays for people who are looking for comfort, creativity and relaxation in the wonderful little town of Port Douglas.

Port Douglas is a beautiful location for a short or a longer stay, to relax, to make sightseeing, to snorkel or dive. The artists' Cottage is a lovely home, filled with owner-made art and flair surrounded by flowers and greenery. All rooms have an own character designed by the art. A fresh breeze ventilate the house which makes it comfortable in this climate. Included services: BBQ, fishing pole, chairs for the beach, books, TV and DVD if you want.
Spacious living room with full kitchen, bright bathroom with washing maschine and dryer, cozy bedroom and 3 terraces. Lots of storage. You feel comfortable!
The apartment is located in the north of Port Douglas, just a few minutes to walk to the Four Mile Beach. It is situated in a small housing/ apartment estate, located in a site street. The city (shopping, harbour and restaurants) is easily accessible by car - or a good walkaway.
Very very lovely, pleasant and uncomplicated owners and management on site.
So if you want to relax in a comfortable and amazing sourrounding and want to feel at home on your trip - choose the Port Douglas artists' Cottage! -

An absolute secluded haven...there is no place quite like The artist's Cottage anywhere else that we have ever visited around the world.
The cottage definitely became the focal point of our trip to Port Douglas and that the surroundings are as beautiful as tropical Queensland almost became a bonus as we would have enjoyed our stay in this retreat regardless of the location.
The amazing artwork and many points of interest around the Cottage made for a really unique experience and inspired my girlfriend to begin painting again.
For people looking for an amazing holiday experience especially suited to people seeking something out of the ordinary, I couldn't recommend this place highly enough...don't be surprised if you decide to begin that novel, painting, song or other artistic venture after visiting...it is just that kind of special place.
