We had a fantastic 2 night stay at Sunrise Retreat. Uli and Rob made us feel completely at home. The location in the rainforest is beautiful and the night noises from the wildlife amazing. Beautifully appointed, everything we could need. We will definitely come back.

What a wonderful place to stay. So much more than pictures can describe. A guest house that actually exceeds your expectations. We felt right at home and very welcome for the duration of our stay.
Everything was clean and comfortable and private
We have 2 large dogs who were also most welcome to stay outside and even had a flat grassed area.
Would definitely return -

Williamston, MichiganThe perfect place to stay in Port Douglas
Left on 11/25/2012 for a stay in November 2012
My wife and I stayed here for about a week and a half around the solar eclipse in Nov 2012. We stayed in Cabin 1, which is isolated from the main house and therefore feels quite private (unless you happen to be naked in the spa as someone is going down the driveway during the day!).
There is a kitchen for making food, including some cooking stuff and appliances, so you can cook some nights if you don't want to go out every night on a long stay. There's no oven per se, but the microwave does something convection oven-y that works OK.
An outdoor porch has a spa that overlooks the forest and a little table for eating. The bathroom has a giant shower great for multiple people; it's also often home to little geckos. There is a pool up at the main house that you can use.
As everyone else reviewing has said, the location is perfect for Port Douglas---it's close enough that you can easily get into town when you want to (about 10 min to the town center, closer to a supermarket) but far enough away that you feel secluded in the rainforest. Most of the Port Douglas resorts are packed together and you certainly don't feel like you are in nature or secluded. You'll need a car, but in my opinion you'd be crazy to visit far north Queensland without a car anyway---there's too much stuff to see otherwise.
Other notes: while the cabin has wireless internet access, it's from the main house which is not close. I found I needed line of sight to get it, which meant only from upstairs in bed or sometimes from one part of the kitchen. There is a washer available but no dryer (Uli will let you use hers, I think); you're meant to use the line, which is fine except at the start of rainy season! Our clothes occasionally got wetter rather than drier as showers came. From april to October you'd be fine. There's a french press for coffee, but almost all australian coffee is ground too fine for a french press---I'm not sure they know that they are all basically drinking Turkish coffee. Finally, it's the tropics and there are *lots* of little ants around all the time, you can't leave food out for more than a few seconds. -
Honeymoon in Port Douglas
Burnie, TasmaniaFreedom, privacy and priceless local knowledge
Left on 07/06/2012 for a stay in June 2012
Our fantastic experience at Sunrise Retreat is attributed to owners Rob and Uli. Adventurers themselves, Rob and Uli gave us heaps of insight into the best local delights and tours. Don't book anything before you go! These guys are awesome and will help you decide on what to do, when and with who (companies) :) Make sure you take Rob's advice and head up the coast with his locally informed map to Cape Tribulation...heaps of cool spots to stop! We're well travelled and as far as hosts and properties go, Sunrise Retreat was on top.
We stayed for 6 nights in Unit 1...our very own treehouse! Whilst we were close enough to the main house to grab some advice when needed and a dip in the pool, the treehouse is absolutely private.
Because the property is few minutes out of town having your own transport to get to and from town is beneficial. In saying that, we loved staying a bit out of town...the property is secluded with great views right across the coast. It's well worth the 6 minute drive!
Even with 6 days under our belt we still had more we wanted to do. We'll definitely be back and don't hesitate in recommending Sunrise Retreat to you all! -

BrisbaneRelaxing in tropical Queensland
Left on 05/25/2012 for a stay in March 2012
We recently stayed at the Sunrise Retreat and had a relaxing stay, with all the comfort of a self-contained apartment. The location was fantastic, being only a few minutes from the centre of Port Douglas, but far enough away that we could only hear the birds and a nearby waterfall.
Our hosts Uli and Rob were lovely, and thought of all the extras. They gave us great advice about activities that we could do. They also helped us with our bookings, organising snorkelling and sailing, as well as with our restaurant recommendations and reservations.
We highly recommend the Sunrise Retreat to anyone who is wanting a home away from home to explore one of the most spectacular locations in tropical Queensland. -

Sunrise Retreat was great; clean, tidy, fruit platter waiting in the fridge, nice soap in the bathroom, great location and views. The owners, Uli and Rob, were very friendly; they invited us to use their pool and were happy to sit down and advise us on site seeing. Just note, as their website suggests, it is handy to have a car to get around as it is a few minutes drive from the centre of Port Douglas.

BrisbaneCabin amongst the trees
Left on 04/21/2012 for a stay in March 2012
We stayed in March 2012 for our honeymoon and whilst the weather was not kind to us (a later wet season than usual) our accommodation was very comfortable.
Nicely decorated and a good layout the cabin is set among the trees on a slope with the back deck having a view through the canopy over the tree tops below to the ocean in the distance... although as the trees grow I suspect this view is gradually shrinking.
With the rainfall that we had whilst there, when on the deck we could always hear the running of a nearby creek (maybe a small waterfall too) rushing down the slope among the trees to the south. One problem with this place if you come in the wet season is the possibility of getting cut off temporarily by flood waters. This happened to us one evening trying to get home. So after then going in to Port Douglas for dinner we returned to a level below the bridge (apparently it's tidal).
On the eve of departure the roads were closed to get to our plane in Cairns. Uri kindly offered an extension of our stay at no extra cost.
Uri and Rob were ideal hosts, with one of them always being available when needed but never imposing on our privacy. Once they gave us some freshly caught fish to cook for dinner.
The spa on the deck is a touch of luxury but needs caps of some sort put over the jets as when we turned them on, out shot ants and debris that had collected in there since the previous use. I believed them when they said that they flush it out after each stay, but without caps the ants will always crawl back in.
Up at the main house you can enjoy their pool with an amazing panoramic view of the coastline. It's just unfortunate that because of the position of the pool, it feels like you're somewhat in their space.
Overall very highly recommended. -

BrisbaneConvenient and Quiet Mountain Retreat
Left on 04/11/2012 for a stay in April 2012
10min from the centre of Port Douglas, Sunrise Retreat is very convenient. Excellent value when compared to resorts in the township. Walking distance to a fresh water swimming hole but 10min drive to the beach. The view of the moutains and ocean from the infinity swimming pool is breathtaking.
We brought our greyhound and were made to feel very welcome. It is our first stay in a pet-friendly accomm and were delighted with how impeccably clean and fresh the cabin was. The quality of the cabin is of a very high standard, right down to the kitchen supplies.
Highly recommended! -

We stayed in Guest House 1 for a week, and wished it could have been longer. The house was beautifully prepared, and the building itself was simply lovely, and in a wonderful setting. Everything was to hand, and elegantly simple. We had a marvellously restful and happy visit. Our hosts were everything would want: helpful and kind.

Uli and Rob are fantastic hosts and couldn't be any more helpful, they helped with choosing the best day for our reef trip and places to see. The fresh fruit platter was great the views fantastic and the accommodation very very nice. I could easily wake up to those views everyday! We would recommend to anyone going to Port Douglas to stay there. Thanks for everything hope to see you again.

We loved it so much we stayed on 2 extra nights in another unit connected to the main building on the property. It was modern and private and every need was met.We loved the infinity pool and spent quite a lot of time in it.The view from the house is amazing. It is quite elevated and you can see right out to the ocean.Uli and Rob were great hosts. They helped organise our diving and fishing trips and gave us maps and local knowledge that took us to places others wouldn't see.I would stay there again and definately recommend their beautiful property. -

We stayed at Sunrise Retreat for a week (taking our dog with us) and we had a wonderful time. The retreat is located in a beautiful Hinterland location. Our cottage was comfortable, very clean and fitted with everything we needed. It has been built and fitted with a lot of thought and love for the detail. We spent a wonderful week there enjoying stunning views from the pool area, exploring the beautiful Hinterland and relaxing on the sun deck. Uli and Rob were wonderful hosts, sharing their vast knowledge about all kinds of attractions and activities of the area. We always felt welcome and they made our stay very special. We recently had a wonderful stay in cottage #1 at Uli and Rob's beautiful property. The cottage was exactly like we imagined, a true treehouse hidden away from anything apart from singing birds and wildlife skipping about. It was a true luxury to stay in this beautiful, peaceful place, a perfect location. The drive to Port Douglas is only 10 min and did not bother us at all.
Uli and Rob are terrific hosts, and their warm hospitality definitely added to the experience. They were able us to advise on local attractions which of course we enjoyed immensely. Far North Queensland is very special.

My partner and I stayed at Sunrise Retreat for one week (to escape the bleak Melbourne winter) and it was a first rate experience all round. We stayed in a wonderfully designed guesthouse, both sleek and comfortable, perched in lush green treetops and overlooking fields and ocean. Uli and Rob are friendly and professional hosts and we felt relaxed and well looked after from the moment we arrived. Uli and Rob are expert in terms of recommending things to do and places to visit. Port Douglas and its surrounds have so much to offer - great beaches, gourmet food and stunning nature walks to name a few - and Sunrise Retreat is a great base from which to explore: a luxurious hideaway in the hills, yet just a few minutes from Four Mile Beach and the attractions of the town. We look forward to visiting again!

Thankyou to Uli and Rob for having such a lovely place to stay away from the busy everyday places that comes with Holidays.
Our flight had been cancelled the night before we were due to arrive. I emailed Uli and Rob to let them know. They were so easy to deal with and understood our problem.
When we did finally got there late at night . Rob greeted us with a smile and pleasant nature which was great after our long day lost through travel.
It was just what we needed a quiet place to chill and relax away from noise and crowds.
The next morning we managed to properly introduce ourselves and found Uli and Rob very knowledgeable of the area which was great.
We even organised a Catamaran Cruise with Uli and it was fantastic . Nothing seemed to be too much trouble from both of them.
Sunset Retreat is the place to chill and relax in the spa and listen to the birds .
We had the most relaxing time together without interrupts from other guests or traffic. Just what we both needed.
I would definitely stay here again if we ever get back to Queensland.

A fantastic welcome in a lovely setting! We came with our new puppy who wouldn't settle in to his new surroundings. Rob & Uli were extremely helpful and accommodating in assisting us to ensure that even he was well looked after, by moving us to another one of their lovely guest houses, which suited us much better. Rob and Uli have great local knowledge and are more than happy to impart that knowledge to ensure you get the most out of your stay. Hand built by Rob and decorated by Uli, the accommodation is of a high standard and has everything you need both inside and out. Even if there is something specific you require, they are more than happy to assist. The location is outstanding and even though its a short drive to Port Douglas itself, this is negated by the peace and tranquility of the retreat surroundings. We would thoroughly recommend the Sunrise Retreat to anyone and everyone looking to stay in the area and we will be back again in the near future. Many thanks again to Rob and Uli for making our stay enjoyable and relaxing and we will endeavour to take Rob up on some of the extreme adventure activities he offers next time!!! Best wishes alex, Alex & Ollie

Sunrise Retreat was absolutely stunning. The house that we stayed in was beautiful - every little detail had been considered. It had a gorgeous loft bedroom, spacious lounge and kitchen and the deck with a spa was perfect! A very romantic, relaxing spot - we only wished we could have stayed longer. Uli and Rob were also very understanding that we had our dog with us as we were on our way up to Cooktown to live. They invited us to swim in their pool with a breathtaking view in the morning and made us coffee before we had to continue on our journey. It was lovely to stay in a place that was secluded and private and yet still close enough to Port Douglas to grab some takeaway Thai and wine for dinner. The time we had at Sunrise Retreat was fabulous. We were greeted on arrival and shown around our accommodation which I thought was one of the best places I have ever stayed. The cabin was gorgeous and clean and is set in rain forest with a glimpse of the ocean. It was nice and airy and was in a lovely quiet area.
We were able to sit and relax, have a drink on the high chairs and also have a secluded spa on the deck.
Rob and Uli were friendly and helpful hosts. The inviting fruit platter was delicious and the added extras in the kitchen like herbs, teas etc were a lovely touch.
We were able to swim in the edgeless pool and sit on the deck and enjoy the wonderful view towards the ocean and Port Douglas. Only a short drive to the Port and we were able to enjoy the attractions there and dine out at the great restaurants.
I highly recommend Sunrise Retreat. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay there and would certainly stay again when we travel to the area. -

Uli and Rob have built a delightful little house using native timbers, finished to a high standard. We found it very easy to live in, spacious, with comfortable beds, plenty of wardrobe space, a kitchen equipped to a high standard and with sharp knives; also a lovely large shower in a great bathroom. I used the balcony a lot for breakfast, cups of tea and the large spa bath!!
Set amongst trees, you have an eye level view of birds. The view from the terrace by the main house and other two units is extensive, showing beautiful Mowbray Valley with the sea beyond.
Sunrise Retreat is an easy drive from Port Douglas and other attractions but is quiet and secluded. Uli and Rob are non intrusive, but have a wealth of local knowledge to help you. I totally recommend Sunrise as a place to stay.
Thank you Uli and Rob for providing a lovely spot. -

Beautiful, tranquil property in the heart of the rainforest. We woke up to the sound of water rushing through a nearby creek and the trills of rainforest birds.
There is a brilliant little walk down the road to another creek, which seemed like a nice place to go for a dip with the dog.
And Port was only a 10 minute drive away, not too far away from all the delights of tropical North Queensland's most luxurious location.
The cabin itself was small yet beautifully constructed, with full amenities, even catering to pets!
The only thing we would have liked to have seen - a seriously minor thing - was a door to the patio to keep our mischievous puppy from running away while we ventured into Port, so she could sleep on the provided dog bed. -

Our holiday in the sunshine could not have been any better. We were made to feel so welcome by Uli and Rob who gave us plenty of local advice about where to go and what to see and do. Even their gorgeous dog "Lusheous" welcomed us and befriended our 3 year old daughter. The guesthouse has beautiful timber throughout,it was immaculately clean, modern and private. The tranquilty and the beautiful views from our deck and from the stunning pool can not be beaten. We would most definity recommend the Sunrise Retreat to anyone wanting a real "holiday", we cant wait to return!!
