My husband & I stayed at Chmt House for a week in april. We're extremely picky and have a difficult time finding places that meet our expectations for style + value but this house did not disappoint. We were thrilled from the moment we pulled into the drive. Primarily looking for something close to Bandon Dunes that would afford privacy and spectacular ocean views. The layout of the house is designed for old-fashioned relaxtion (sunbathing, reading, sketching, bird watching, cooking, cocktailing) as well as high tech cinerama-style entertainment. This is not your typical "home theater" it is a Home/Theater. Location: know that it's a good 30 minute walk down the mountain road to get to the beach and into town. Driving to town you'll find a supermarket, liquor store, cafe and the not-to-be-missed Crazy Norwegian's Fish & Chips. Day hikes and lighthouses in the area are picture perfect too. We drove down from Oregon Wine Country in 5 hours. Do make absolutely sure to arrive before sunset and in good time for mixing martinis. You'll want to pick up some groceries in Port Orford town before you arrive and make a simple pasta your first night (trust me). The owners, Gary and Jennifer, made the entire reservations process a breeze and check-in was quick, simple and much appreciated after the long drive. The house was well stocked with 'daily necessities' and interesting books, movies, music. Our only less-than-100-percent comment is this: because of the hilltop location and the wind the house has its share of 'the natural elements'. Just open the doors & windows and let things come and go freely. You will also find the bathwater to be iron-rich. Add some bubbles. The website photos are fantastic but the real deal is impossible to portray in a snapshot. Sure the house looks fantastic but you will not believe how good it feels. After that first martini kicks in while the sun is setting and Miles Davis plays on the hi-fi you'll already be plotting your return visit. Cheers!

Our second stay at CMH. We love it, it is secluded but not desolate. The modern feel on the coast is what we are looking for. Bring your iPod and favorite DVD's the audio/video gear rocks. They also have a nice selection of DVD's and CD's.
The one improvement I would make for the foodies is a thorough inventory of the cooking tools and equipment. If you have a must have item you might be surprised that it is there and yet there may be that one all important tool that stops the production.
We'll be back, if you'll have us! -

Left on 04/08/2010 for a stay in July 2009
My husband and I were lucky enough to spend our honeymoon at the China Mountain House last July. From serene ocean views to lovely walks along the beach to the town of Port Orford, nothing was missing. The location was secluded and we enjoyed a lot of relaxation on the fantastic deck overlooking the ocean. The only sound you could hear were the crashing waves!
The house is fully equipped with everything you need for an enjoyable stay. We were able to get fresh fish from the docks in town and then enjoyed bbq'ing and cooking to our hearts content. Not to mention the excellent entertainment system to watch movies in the evening!
The house is also centrally located between many small coastal towns and we enjoyed doing trips around the area. Eating lots of fresh seafood of course!
Thank you to Jennifer and Gary for providing a wonderful and relaxing retreat. We couldn't have asked for a better honeymoon. The booking experience was easy and Gary was great at answering any questions we had. We will definitely be staying there again!

Although the photos of China Mountain House are striking, they do not convey how lovely this home truly is. There are views from every window which give one the sense of being part of the natural environment. It's a great house from which to watch the changes of weather, and the panoramic views of the coastline are breath taking. The interior of the house is bright and airy. Every amenity is present. We felt fortunate Jennifer and Gary agreed to share their beautiful home with us.
