Sydney, AustraliaPerfect place to relax & unwind in Paradise
Left on 01/13/2013 for a stay in December 2012
Kooyu Villas were just what we hoped for. We had the best time even with the tail end of a cyclone trying its best to give us a Bondi Beach view (the waves were surf-able for a few days). After spending 10 nights there it was hard to drag us away to the airport. Please don't let the road in and out put you off. It was bumpy but only added to the fun. Thanks to Olivia, getting a bus was no problem at all and getting one back from town never presented a problem (although little tiny taxis should not venture onto bumpy, dirt roads).
There were seven adults in our group and we had the two villas, so between the two we sorted out the kitchen. No air conditioning was never a problem as there was always a breeze and the lack of television was a godsend. Although the free wi-fi (and access to Facebook) was greatly appreciated by the grown children.
Overall a good time was had by all and many thanks to Olivia who made us feel welcome and was always obliging. We shall return! -

Wellington, New ZealandGreat spot, out of the way but right on the water.

Kooyu Villas is a small independently owned resort on the Pango peninsula, outside of Port Vila. Consists of a small number of private self contained villas, including kitchen, bedroom, living area, and a private pool. The section is right on the water, and excellent snorkeling right on the beach at high tide. Went snorkeling every day of our stay at least once.
The location is a bit off the beaten track, expect to pay a bit more than the standard 'bus' fare from Vila to get out as its down a rather worn dirt road. Our host organised a driver to take us straight from the airport with a stop-off at a local supermarket too.
On the first day of our stay, workers were building a new gazebo. Unfortunately the circular saws & nail guns detracted somewhat from the natural tranquility, our hosts more than made for this by arranging for a private dinner, prepared in our kitchen by a local cook from fresh ingredients we selected from the market in town during the day.
Take a walk/drive over to Honeymoon Bay for even better snorkeling, or use the tandem sea kayak (free!) to find a private cove to swim out from.
Very relaxing, private & enjoyed our stay a great deal. -

We stayed at Kooyu Villas for 7 nights, it’s a great place to sit back and watch the world go by. The villas themselves are beautiful, wood throughout and enough of the mod cons to keep anyone happy. Although if you are looking for a place with air-conditioning you best look elsewhere as the villas open up and are ventilated by the ocean breeze and ceiling fans.
The location of the villas on the Pango peninsular is beautiful, although it can become tricky late at night getting a bus to take you back to the villas after dinner, generally at a cost of 1,000 vatu for a bus if there is a group of you or 300 vatu per person, so if staying for a while and going in and out of Port Vila it can add up. You can however buy food and cook in the villas, they are well stocked with cooking equipment, gas burners, dishwasher, coffee machine, fridge/freezer, pots and pans etc….
If you are after a relaxing place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city, then Kooyu Villas is a great place, I would suggest getting the lady who can cook for you one night, she takes you to the markets and shops with you and then cooks a feast of local dishes. For me the cherry on top at Kooyu was the outdoor shower, it tops off the feeling of a nice relaxed holiday in the tropics.
The only down side to the villas is the lack of steps to be able to get in and out of the pool. The pool is deep and require you to be able pull yourself out of the water and onto the side, an act that provided much laughter during our stay, having said that, the villas are right on the beach. -

Thank you to all the team I have been in contact with adam, Olivia, bule, Timothy you all made our mini honeymoon really special. On arrival after our wedding in ratua private island we were greeted by bule at the airport after I could not reach the team after my phone went for a swim in the blue hole. Then as we entered our room we were greeted with champagne, beautiful flowers and a love heart on our bed, so romantic.
Thank you everyone what a magical place!
Also loved having the nespresso... -

Kooyu one great place to stay. We had a relaxing time with our stay being made all the more enjoyable through the effort and thoughtfulness of Brad and his team. Brad always seemed to be around when we needed assistance but very much left us along. The place is well maintained but you do need to understand the Vanuatu way of doing things at times.
Charlotte the complementary cook for 1 night was a great idea and we really enjoyed the local feast she cooked up.
While the place is a long way out of town over one seriously pot holed road the services of the friendly Bule the local mini bus operator were always available and on time. Being on the sheltered side of the peninsular was a plus.
While no fault of the establishment our privacy was compromised at times as we had a very noisy child next door that did spool our stay somewhat. It also lacked basic supplies re it’s self-catering capabilities. But just down the road was Paradise Cove restaurant with good food.Response from Kooyu Villas - 10/21/2012
Owner
Thanks for your feedback. While the accommodation is self-catering the team does assist if possible to make the stay enjoyable and we are glad that this has made a difference in this instance.
For readers further information on Distance:
'Nambatu' where the largest supermarket and the main roundabout (considered the start of 'town') is approximately 5.5km from Kooyu Villas. The coral road component of that distance that transects Pango Peninsula is approximately 2.5km and can be of variable condition depending on time of year and when council has last graded it. Regardless of whether there are any pot-holes the recommended speed on the coral road is 15km / hr as the local village kids often play and socialise on the road. Also being on this part of Pango Peninsula and its modest coral road network means that you are close to the beautiful honeymoon beach - arguably the nicest beach close to Port Vila town.
For water enthusiasts - taking the direct 'over water' route to downtown waterfront Port Vila is 3.5km and has been traveled by Paddle Board - 50 minutes, kayak - 35 minutes, speed boat - 5 minutes. The kayak is a 2 x person kayak and is available for use by guests.
We trust that this response was helpful. -

Melbourne, AustraliaA peaceful, private place to stay
Left on 08/26/2012 for a stay in July 2012
We enjoyed almost two weeks at Kooyu Villas and found it a peaceful, private place to stay - perfect for our party of mum, dad, 3 yo, 1 yo and grandma.
We enjoyed both a pool and non-pool villa during our stay. They villas were spacious, clean and comfortable. The detached guest pavillion at the rear of the villa was a perfect location for adult guests such as grandparents or older (independent) children - it was too far removed (and the foot path too dark at night time) to put the baby and young child in there unattended. The villa's only bedroom was large enough to accomodate an extra single bed for a child as well as a full size cot for a baby.
The kitchens were mostly well-equipped, but we found some items were missing, as they had been transferred between villas. It was very handy to have some initial breakfast provisions provided together with a lovely bowl of tropical fruits. The private chef was great - we really enjoyed the market shopping with her earlier in the day as well. The ni-Vanuatu cook was also terrific and would highly recommend this option.
With no TV or radio, the wifi was useful for staying in touch with the world as well as planning and booking touristy things. Byo iPad/laptop/etc.
Mobile phone reception was fine.
Big Blue scuba diving company picked us up from the beach in their boat - we had to wade out to the deeper water, but it saved a longish trip to and from town. We pre-arranged hire gear via email and SMS.
It is private - there is no through traffic. You can get the mobile number of a minibus driver in the village of Pango (10 mins away by car) and SMS text him to pre-arrange your transport. We had the lease car for a couple of days and this was adequate for seeing the sites such as Mele Cascades and a trip around Efate. We got car seats from Hertz, but no one uses them to be honest. Airport transfers were easy to pre-arrange, even for a 5am departure. The road is bumpy towards the end (after the village of Pango) but its passable by a 2WD and really not that bad if the vehicle suspension is decent. The trip into Port Vila is 20-30 minutes. Stock up on supplies from the market and au Bon Marche and you won't need to make daily trips into town. With no dairy industry on the island, milk is imported and is UHT. The fresh bread only lasted a day. The beef was the best we've ever eaten. The au Bon Marche was open 5.30am to 7.30pm daily and was equivalent to a smaller, independent supermarket in australia in its range. I could buy baby supplies easily enough (not all of the same brands).
The beach is a mix of sand, stones, lots of shells and coral bits. Great for toddler play. The water is rocky - you'll need shoes/sandles - not great for toddler swimming. There is a sandy water section a short walk up the beach. The foreshore is shady with large trees - excellent for sitting under whilst watching the kids play or eating outdoors. The pool, being ambient temperature, was too cold for the kids to swim in - besides it was very deep and with no ladder or in-built steps, they couldn't get themselves in or out very easily. There were no pool safety fences either.
The owners (who also reside there) were very friendly and helpful in providing tourism advice, arranging transports, loaning kids toys, etc. The cleaning ladies doubled as baby sitters if need be. The property manager was helpful and available by SMS if anything needed attention.
A word or two of advice - it is rather dark at night with minimal lighting around the property. We needed a torch. My mum fell over on the dark, wet decking steps. The nearby Paradise Cove (10 minutes by foot along the bumpy coral road) has a decent restaurant and a good back up option if you don't want to cook (so long as its not raining!). -

SydneyA real boutique experience in a special location
Left on 08/20/2012 for a stay in August 2012
We just loved our stay here. I recommend Kooyu Villas for those who want a quality Vanuatu experience that is 'off the beaten track'. The Villas are self-catered which is great if you like to have the independence of choosing to cook your own meals or going out to a restaurant. I liked that this side of the Pango peninsula was sheltered from the Winter winds yet still close to Honeymoon beach, the surf, Erakor Island etc. To get the most of your stay you'll need to hire a car (don't forget to wave to the local villagers on your way past!). One of our highlights was when we booked a local masseuse and a local cook to come to our door- pure bliss! The Kooyu staff are all very friendly too.

Very relaxing and friendly, luxary resort. Owners and Manager very helpful and anxious to please. On site rent-a-car a big benefit, but loved the inter-action with the local village people of Pango.

Left on 07/12/2012 for a stay in June 2012
we spent 2 weeks here, the first week we had 2 friends join us who stayed in the guest pavilion. They loved it had actually had a better view from their bed straight out to the ocean then what we had.
the snorkelling off the beach is great, so many fish, but do remember to take reef shoes.
we had a car for the 2 weeks so we could get about. Mainly used it to go into town each day to stock up on food from the markets, but Brad said that they would be willing to do personal shopping for guests as well. we did do a few drives over to the blue hole and out for lunch a few days, but really you could spend 2 weeks in the Villas and never have to leave.
We had a local lady come in for 5 hrs one day and do a cooking class with us. It was very relaxed and great to learn how the locals cook. We made about 9 dishes, then sat down and ate it all.
The staff are friendly and willing to do anything asked of them. Rooms are cleaned and serviced every day, but we actually gave them a few days off as we had not made any mess and the villas as so easy to keep clean with great dishwasher and cooking facilities. -

We had a fantastic holiday at Kooyu Villas - it's a wonderful place, very peaceful with the beach at your doorstep. We thought the villa itself was gorgeous and can't wait to visit again soon.
A special thanks to Brad and Timothy for looking after us so well.
We had some excellent meals at nearby Paradise Cove Resort. You can also arrange to utilise the Paradise Cove Resort transportation for a small fee if you need to venture into Port Vila, but you probably won't want to leave the villa once you've settled in!!
