WesterlyA wonderful retreat!
Left on 05/07/2013 for a stay in April 2013
I am just completing a 6-week stay in this beautiful apartment. I have enjoyed walks down the western promenade, walks down into Old Port for shopping and fantastic restaurants and walks uptown to visit our daughter and brand new grandbaby. I needed a place to be close to them to help with the new baby transition leading into college graduation!
Everything I needed, and more, was supplied by my gracious host. Housekeeping (wonderful Sarah) came every other week leaving me a freshened apartment. Use of the washer/dryer is free! The queen bed is super comfy and every room is spacious and comfortable. Each room is bright and cheery. I especially enjoyed the room in the front of the house with the bay window and pocket doors, which actually gives a second bedroom. The apartment is located in a safe, family friendly area with free unlimited street parking. There is also a reserved parking spot a block away.
I definitely will use 19 Lewis Street again!
Thank you Robin and Sarah! -

Valdosta, GeorgiaAll that I expected and then some!!
Left on 11/02/2012 for a stay in October 2012
This apartment on the West Side was everything I expected plus more. First of all, it was more spacious than it appeared in the photos on Trip advisor. I had plenty of room to spread out and the sunroom with a trundle bed/sofa doubled beautifully as a second bedroom. The den can be separated from the sunroom via pocket doors and the bathroom was accessible via the main hallway. This layout allowed the condo to easily function as a two bedroom/one bath unit…which was perfect for my needs.
Additionally the condo was well furnished….it was extremely clean, uncluttered, plenty of storage and a well stocked kitchen in regard to service pieces, dishes, etc. There were plenty of cleaning supplies should I have needed them in the hall closet. Also in this closet, the owner provided band aides, soaps, first aid, tissues, etc… neatly organized and laid out should I have needed them. The mattresses, comforters, pillows, linens and towels were all very clean…possibly brand new.
The condo is located in a safe and beautiful neighborhood….I enjoyed long morning walks admiring the architecture on the West End. This unit is situated in walking distance from the Portland Museum, Longfellow’s house, numerous churches, Commercial Street, the wharfs and the wonderful eateries on Congress Street. I always found great restaurants close by…I would google “yelp” for a list of nearby eateries specifying “breakfast &brunch;” or whatever and I had the most delicious surprises. Bottom line….great location.
The owner, Robin, could not have been more accommodating during the whole process of reserving the unit, answering question and then meeting me when I arrived.
I would highly recommend this apartment to my friends and family. -

Portland, OregonPerfect location for relaxing, affordable honeymoon.
Left on 09/09/2012 for a stay in August 2012
My newly minted husband and I live in Portland, or and decided to give the other Portland a try for our honeymoon. I found this place here on tripadvisor, and the price was right so we booked it.
Upon arriving at the apartment, we were immediately impressed with how clean and home-like the place felt. We had to arrange key pick-up over email due to a late arrival, which the owner was very flexible and friendly about. In fact, all interactions with the owner prior to/during/after the trip were extremely pleasant, friendly, and straight-forward.
The apartment could not be more perfectly located; it is in a pretty neighborhood, around the corner from a laundromat, gas station and store/deli (which is delicious, Aurora Provisions it was called). Everything else we wanted to do was either a 1-2 mile walk or a $5 cab ride.
All in all, this place is cheaper than staying in a hotel for a week and a thousand times nicer. We loved it! -

Leawood, KansasGreat alternative to a hotel for a Maine vacation

This was our first trip to Portland, and we wanted a place in town from which we could do day trips. This is a quiet neighborhood, and the place was great with two exceptions. It could really use a bigger bed, and it could also really use a chest of drawers for clothes. The one chest - in the hall closet - was full of supplies and bedding, and other than the closet there was no place to put away clothes. Would have felt more like home if not living out of a suitcase. We loved being in a neighborhood, with a laundromat and pizza place just around the corner, and within walking distance to the bay, the ferries, the nightlife, the Sea Dogs game.
Response from Robin Whitten - 08/18/2012
Owner
Appreciate the feedback about the drawers--it was a mistake that the housekeepers left the supplies & linens in all the drawers as they are supposed to be for tenants--but having another chest available is a good idea. We'll work on it. Thanks.

Belfast, METhe perfect home base for a Portland eating tour!
Left on 06/13/2012 for a stay in June 2012
We thoroughly enjoyed our week in this lovely apartment. The West End is a beautiful residential area, and it was nice to wander around after a great meal, admiring the architecture. The Old Port is a mere mile away (and you will need the walk after eating your fill at Portland's many restaurants!). In the West End in particular, I can't say enough about Local 188, Pai Men Miyake & Bonobo pizza. Delicious! (and close to home!)
The parking spot was much appreciated on those days we ventured out by car. The only downside was that the stall shower was on the small side and the shower head rather high, but it in no way detracted from our stay.
It was fun to be a tourist in our own state. Now we need to convince Gorgeous Gelato to open a store in Belfast! -

My husband and I traveled to Portland, me for a long weekend in October. The apartment was wonderful. It was very clean and comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked and we had everything we needed for our stay. The checkin / out process was very easy. We will definitely rent this unit again when we return to Portland.

portland, orComfortable, clean condo with a local vibe-worth it!

I used to live in Portland so was happy to find a condo rental vs. overpaying for a hotel. The condo is clean, in a nice up and coming neighborhood, has off-street parking (very important as parking is tough at times) and a good value. 15 minute walk to the heart of the old port, plus easy access to freeways. Make sure you find the Fisherman's Grill (849 Forest ave) for the best lobster roll of your life! The condo is totally worth it, nice owners and caretakers and very easy to access.

We've stayed at 19 Lewis St. on two separate occasions. High points for decoration, cleanliness, location near restaurants + walks to Longfellow Sq., on treelined streets, Western Promenade; well-stocked kitchen and linens.

Brooklyn, NYFelt like a local in the charming neighborhood
Left on 08/09/2011 for a stay in August 2011
I loved the location of the apartment in the West End. It is full of beautiful old homes with a lot of character but at the same time very quiet. If I were to move to Portland, it is a neighborhood that I would want to reside in, so I got a feel for what it would be like to live there rather than staying in a touristy hotel in the Old Port. The apartment has a lot of charm with original details and well appointed furnishings. The space was very clean and both Robin and Hilda were very pleasant. Aurora Provisions right down the street has the most amazing scones and pastries in the morning! There were a lot of tasty restaurants within walking distance and we found the walking to be quite enjoyable as the city lends itself well to pedestrians. We also had a car so the parking spot was very convenient. We had a great stay and it was much more home-like and affordable than a hotel. I highly recommend the apartment.

Newington, ConnecticutLive Like a Local in the West End
Left on 07/11/2011 for a stay in July 2011
My husband and I rented this property for one week.
The location: The property is in the "West End" of Portland, about a twenty-minute walk to downtown. It is in a neighborhood that had a mix of people - young professionals, retired people, some interesting characters (I did cross to the other side of the street once or twice), families, etc. It was a very diverse and accepting area. The condo is near a cute market, a pizza restaurant, and a great sandwich shop is only about a five-minute walk. We generally drove downtown but often walked in the neighborhood for dinner or snacks. We liked the location because we felt like Portland residents, not tourists. We got to see charming areas and aspects of the city we might not have seen. If you want to stay in the Old Port, this is not the place for you. However, we found it convenient and quaint.
Food/activities: We walked to many activities and restaurants. We ate at "Bonobo," a wood-fired pizza restaurant and had its gelato from the window facing the street - both were good. There are other restaurants within walking distance. We went to both of the "Miyake" sushi restaurants - delicious and completely overpriced. In downtown Portland, we loved the Fore Street restaurant and had a great prix-fixe meal at Cinque Terre. Be sure to eat the chocolate/caramal/sea salt cake at the Bar of Chocolate Cafe. I also walked about half-mile to the heart of a major artery, Congress Street, for yoga at Portland Yoga studio. I enjoyed the class I took there as well as the one at Greener Postures in South Portland, about a five-minute drive over the bridge on 77.
The service: We found Robin, the property owner/manager and Hilda, the woman who checked us in and out, to be very professional, courteous, and helpful. Robin responded to our emails and calls within 24-hours. Hilda was helpful and took my suggestions to enhance future stays (I will mention those below).
The condo: The condo was very spacious. The bedroom was small with a medium-sized closet, the kitchen was a nice size and fully stocked with dishes and cooking utensils, the bathroom was small but had some storage (shelves, medicine cabinet, basket), and the living room was comfortable as was the office. Both the living room and office had many free book shelves, which were great for placing items. There was also free wifi (we used this our entire stay), brochures and information about Portland and surrounding towns, and some books available to read. Everything was spotless when we arrived. I was pleased there were recycle bins in the condo. Upon our checkout, I talked with Hilda about some things that could improve our already good stay ; first, there was only one window-air conditioning unit in the living room. Hilda and the owner had anticipated the lack of air conditioning and when she checked us out, was about to install another air conditioning in the bedroom. There were not enough places to store clothes - besides the closet and desk, there were no free drawers. I recommended empyting some of the drawers in the closet storage unit (filled with extra linens) for guests. There was also no full-length mirror, something I really missed. The building is old and with thick walls; except for footsteps, we did not hear any of the neighbors. There is also something funny about the shower - the installer must have switched the hot and cold lines; it took my husband and me about ten minutes to figure out that the shower is hot when it is on the "cold" part of the dial. Like in many old and large houses, it took a few minutes for the water to get hot.
Overall, we had a great stay and would recommend this property to friends and family.
